10 LONGEST Single Player Experiences of 2021 - YouTube
Channel: gameranx
[1]
- [Voiceover] Hey, are you
looking for a single-player game
[3]
that will take you a decent
amount of time to complete?
[6]
Well, we've got you covered with this list
[8]
of 2021 single-player
games with decent length,
[11]
in no particular order.
[12]
And it's also worth pointing out that some
[14]
of these games aren't just
like the regular games
[16]
you've heard about all year.
[17]
We wanted to also use this
list as an opportunity
[19]
to talk about some games we
haven't mentioned enough.
[22]
So keep in mind to set expectations.
[24]
A lot of these games
aren't like "Skyrim" level,
[26]
endless open worlds, but here,
[29]
we went with personal
experience, online opinions,
[32]
and HowLongToBeat.com for references
[34]
and these should satisfy you.
[35]
Anyway, let's get started
off with number 10.
[38]
"Sherlock Holmes Chapter
One" is a game you may not
[40]
have heard of, or really
had on your radar,
[42]
but it should take you around 25 hours.
[45]
Now we're gonna mention it
many times in this video,
[47]
a lot of that time depends on
what type of player you are.
[51]
If you're mainlining everything
[52]
or if you're really exploring
and not skipping cut scenes
[55]
and checking out side quests.
[56]
And interestingly enough,
"Sherlock Holmes Chapter One"
[59]
takes what the previous
"Sherlock Holmes" games did
[62]
and really kind of turns it on its head
[63]
and adds an open world,
[65]
which doesn't seem like it makes sense
[67]
for a "Sherlock Holmes" game.
[69]
But here, you do have the
opportunity to really explore,
[72]
find clues, get engaged with this world,
[75]
and find some pretty engaging side quests.
[77]
It's one of those games
where it has side quests
[79]
that you're actually
gonna want to check out.
[81]
This is a younger Sherlock Holmes,
[82]
they're going for like
a different vibe here.
[85]
It's him in his earlier days,
[86]
exploring a Mediterranean
island and city of Cordona.
[90]
And he's a bit more of a bad-ass.
[91]
The combat's a little weird,
[93]
but still, these "Sherlock Holmes" games
[95]
are massively underrated and pretty cool
[97]
and if you're looking for
an interesting new one
[98]
to jump in with, it's
this one, "Chapter One."
[102]
Now next over at number
nine, let's talk "Far Cry 6."
[105]
This one is a little bit more
of one of the obvious ones
[108]
on the list because it's a "Far Cry" game.
[109]
It's a massive open world
riddled with side quests,
[113]
things to collect, things to
do, and your time can vary.
[117]
But, you know, ultimately, when
you're in a "Far Cry" game,
[119]
you're gonna spend a lot of time.
[121]
The average time to beat for
this game is around 35 hours,
[125]
but you can easily squeeze
a lot more out of that,
[128]
just because Yara is a pretty
interesting tropical location
[132]
with a big city, tons of
different little areas.
[135]
Granted it's all a tropical setting,
[136]
but they manage to vary
it up here and there
[138]
and it's worth checking out.
[140]
Personally, we said it in
our Before You Buy video,
[142]
I found "Far Cry 6" to be a
lot more fun than "Far Cry 5"
[146]
or "Far Cry: New Dawn,"
[148]
which a lot of people forgot about.
[149]
This one is possibly worth checking out,
[151]
especially if you've been burnt
out on the "Far Cry" formula
[154]
for a while.
[155]
This one might be fun enough
to get you back into it.
[159]
Now for number eight,
[159]
we have "Pathfinder:
Wrath of the Righteous,"
[161]
a game on consoles, but I
think is best played on PC.
[165]
The average time to beat this
thing is around 120 hours
[169]
if you're doing the main quest
and most of the side quests,
[172]
which you'll probably do,
[174]
and you'll probably grind
through a lot of it,
[176]
because the game can
get pretty challenging.
[178]
And that's where some of the length lies,
[179]
but where the true length
really comes from is the fact
[183]
that it's just one of those
big ass isometric RPGs.
[186]
Think a "Divinity:
Original Sin" type thing.
[188]
If you've played that,
[189]
you know what you're getting into here,
[190]
you're getting massive worlds,
tons of interesting dialogue,
[194]
fun side quests to pursue,
[196]
different ways to build your
character, stuff to find.
[199]
There's just a lot of
cool stuff in this game.
[201]
The gameplay aside, just
design wise and looks wise
[203]
and arts wise,
[204]
if you like big old fantasy RPGs
[206]
and you like them a little
bit more independent,
[208]
"Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous"
[210]
is definitely worth checking out,
[212]
especially for the fact
that it'll keep you busy
[214]
for quite a while.
[215]
Probably the most out of any
of the games on this list.
[218]
Now next over at number seven,
[219]
we have "Shin Megami Tensei V,"
[221]
a game which, admittedly, we
haven't highlighted enough
[223]
on Gameranx throughout 2021.
[226]
But the average time to beat
this one is around 63 hours.
[229]
"Shin Megami Tensei V" really
embraces being on new hardware
[233]
and just kind of makes everything
feel bigger and better.
[236]
And a lot of that length just comes
[237]
from that good old
fashioned JRPG gameplay,
[240]
which to some people is
just truly comfort food.
[242]
And the, you know, obviously
very different Tokyo
[245]
they have here is a really
good setting for exploration.
[248]
These games have a very
unique spin on them,
[250]
especially if you've
played the "Persona" games,
[253]
but you've never played the
"Shin Megami Tensei" games,
[255]
you're probably gonna
find a lot to like here.
[257]
This is a good jumping in
point and the way you explore
[260]
and you bounce between
these different biomes
[262]
and you slowly build out
these specialized teams
[264]
and collect things, of course,
[266]
you're gonna find yourself
sinking a lot of time
[269]
into this one on your Nintendo Switch.
[271]
It was a good year for JRPGs
[272]
and "Shin Megami Tensei V" is definitely
[274]
one of the ones worth highlighting.
[277]
But over at number six, we
also have "Tales of Arise,"
[279]
another JRPG worth highlighting
where the average time
[282]
to beat is around 58 hours.
[285]
And that's just because
this is a dense game.
[286]
You know, in a lot of ways,
[287]
it feels like a very traditional JRPG
[290]
with small little areas with
loading screens in between
[292]
and towns and hubs.
[294]
But it's just so interesting.
[296]
This game gives you tons and tons of lore
[299]
and stuff to read and people to talk to,
[301]
to really learn about this
unique world they built out.
[304]
Now "Tales of Arise" is
its own contained story,
[307]
so if you haven't played any
of the previous "Tales" games,
[309]
that's fine, this is a
good place to jump in.
[311]
And what you're gonna get
is some pretty traditional
[313]
JRPG, kind of active style combat,
[316]
but with really good team comboing stuff,
[320]
all with a really interesting
and over the top style
[322]
and cool characters that you're
building up along the way.
[325]
If it sounds very
straightforward, you know,
[327]
from presentation to gameplay
[328]
and what you're seeing on screen,
[330]
yes it is, but it is still
so incredibly compelling
[333]
and it's one of our
favorite games of the year.
[336]
Now next over at number five,
[338]
let's talk about the
"Monster Hunter" series
[339]
because it had two big releases this year
[341]
and they'll take up a lot of your time.
[343]
The first is "Monster Hunter
Stories 2: Wings of Ruin."
[346]
The average time to beat
this is around 53 hours
[349]
and if you've played the previous
[351]
"Monster Hunter Stories" game,
[353]
you understand what you're getting into.
[354]
They are dense and just really,
[356]
"Monster Hunter" games are in general,
[358]
because also this year we
had "Monster Hunter Rise,"
[360]
which the average time
to beat is 44 hours.
[363]
But with "Monster Hunter" games,
[365]
you can just spend so much time building
[368]
and grinding out your characters.
[369]
And that's where the fun really lies.
[371]
It may not be the longest
or most content rich
[374]
of the "Monster Hunter" games, sure,
[376]
but still the hours spent,
[377]
every single one of those
hours is intense and fun
[380]
and you're always growing
and you're always learning
[382]
and you're always figuring
out a new enemy type
[384]
or you're always gaining some new piece
[386]
to craft a new piece of armor.
[388]
And it's just, mm, it's
just good all the way.
[390]
And if you haven't played
a "Monster Hunter" game,
[392]
"Rise" is a good place to start.
[394]
So good luck, have fun.
[396]
Now next over at number four,
[397]
we have "NEO: The World Ends with You."
[400]
Now this time, things are fully 3D,
[402]
which of course means
there's a lot more to do.
[404]
The average time to beat
"The World Ends with You"
[406]
is 48 hours.
[408]
Now you're battling your
way through this adventure
[410]
and collecting pins to give
your characters new abilities.
[413]
And you're also exploring kind
of modern new representation
[416]
of Shibuya in Tokyo, Japan.
[419]
There are plenty of things to check out,
[420]
characters to interact with, restaurants.
[423]
There's shops, of course.
[424]
There's like an in-game social network.
[426]
There's a lot to check out,
[427]
and really it's just a great follow-up
[428]
to "The World Ends with You."
[430]
This was like one of those
games that just came out
[432]
for the DS and blew people away.
[434]
So to have an actual good
followup that captures
[437]
that feel again, but
blows it out of the water,
[439]
is something totally worth checking out.
[442]
Now down to number three,
we have "Lost Judgment."
[444]
The average time to beat
this game is around 50 hours
[447]
and if you played the original
game this is the sequel to,
[450]
"Judgment," you know that it's dense.
[452]
These are of course
spinoff "Yakuza" games,
[454]
which are also extremely dense.
[456]
And what you get here is a fun world,
[459]
people to beat up, and
lots of mysteries to solve.
[462]
These games, of course,
[463]
walk an incredible tight
rope between fun, action,
[466]
brawler style gameplay,
[468]
Japanese soap opera, melodrama,
[470]
and just complete wacky absurdity.
[472]
You can really get anything
you want out of these style
[475]
of games and "Lost Judgment"
brings a lot of course,
[477]
new, interesting, compelling side quests
[480]
that will take you quite a bit of time,
[482]
a whole interactive high school to explore
[484]
with its own sub-quest
system to check out,
[487]
and just an interesting and compelling
[488]
and more personal story this time around.
[490]
Not to mention a new fighting style.
[492]
There's a lot here. There's
a cool world to explore.
[494]
And a lot of dudes to kick in the face.
[496]
"Lost Judgment" is absolutely awesome
[499]
and if you've never
played any of these games
[501]
from this studio, "Lost Judgment" is still
[503]
a really good place to jump in.
[505]
Now over at number two,
we have "Returnal,"
[508]
a game that just, as much
as people really like it,
[510]
it hasn't gotten enough
mainstream love in 2021.
[513]
And maybe that's for its unique
structure, its unique style,
[516]
its whole run-based game play.
[518]
Maybe it's the challenge.
[519]
So for "Returnal," the
average time to beat
[521]
is around 30 hours, but this
is really gonna depend on,
[525]
I don't know, how good you are
[526]
or how long it takes you to really grasp
[528]
the game's elements.
[529]
If you like to take it slow.
[530]
"Returnal" is pretty challenging.
[532]
The bosses can be pretty intense.
[534]
The die and reset thing
might not be for everybody.
[537]
But what you get is a
pretty addictive experience.
[540]
You know, you'll find yourself being like,
[541]
"Ooh, just one more run,"
[542]
because this third person shooting,
[544]
shoot 'em up, bullet hell
style gameplay is so good,
[548]
but also,
[548]
you're trying to unravel this
cool, space sci-fi mystery
[551]
along the way.
[552]
So while it's not like an
80 hour "Horizon Zero Dawn"
[554]
or a million hour "Skyrim"
or anything like that,
[557]
you can sink a ton of time into "Returnal"
[559]
and all of it will be pretty satisfying.
[562]
Now over at number one,
[563]
another weird one to
mention is "Loop Hero."
[565]
Now the average time to beat
this game is around 35 hours
[569]
and it's a pretty unique indie game.
[571]
You're in this world that's
in a never-ending time loop
[573]
and essentially it's kind
of like an old school style,
[575]
but card based system
where you dole out cards
[579]
to build out dungeons and areas
[580]
for a little hero to get through
[582]
and it can have incredibly
addictive qualities.
[585]
Now a lot of people kind
of chalk this up as one
[587]
of those idle clicker games,
[588]
like a cookie clicker type of thing,
[590]
but we find it a bit more compelling here.
[592]
And while it can be a
fairly passive experience,
[595]
it's also just engaging
[597]
and you could dump a ton of time into it.
[600]
It's really cool. It's
different, it's unique.
[601]
We also just haven't
mentioned it really this year.
[603]
So consider checking that out.
[604]
Now we also got some bonus games
worth mentioning of course,
[607]
"Pokemon: Brilliant Diamond"
and "Shining Pearl" remakes.
[610]
Those, of course, you can
sink plenty of time into.
[613]
It's a "Pokemon" game,
catch 'em all, right?
[615]
"Wildermyth" is another fun
one where like the style
[618]
might deceive you,
[619]
but what it is is just
a really compelling RPG
[621]
with interesting and unique
spins on character building.
[624]
Then "Inscription," another game that we
[626]
just haven't given any love to this year
[628]
and we wanted to highlight it here.
[629]
It's definitely worth checking out.
[631]
And "The Legend of
Zelda: Skyward Sword HD"
[632]
remaster rerelease was also 2021.
[635]
A lot of people forgot about it,
[636]
but you can sink a ton of time
into it for a "Zelda" game.
[639]
So these are some lengthy
single-player games from 2021
[642]
that you should still
consider checking out.
[644]
There are, of course, so
many others out there.
[646]
So we want to hear yours
down in the comments.
[648]
What game did you spend the longest amount
[651]
of time playing in 2021?
[653]
Especially if it was like
a sort of single-player,
[654]
story-driven thing,
with a beginning to end.
[656]
Let us know.
[657]
