Spec Ops: The Line - I: How to Restart a Franchise - Extra Credits - YouTube

Channel: Extra Credits

[10]
holy hell I did not see this game coming
[13]
speck off the line is really something
[15]
you guys I don't even know how to start
[17]
talking about it it is not at all what I
[18]
was expecting I think most of us are a
[20]
bit jaded by now if I see the saturated
[22]
box art with a grim dude and modern
[24]
military gun holding pose I feel like I
[26]
know exactly what I'm going to get when
[27]
I pop that disc in in many cases
[29]
especially with the lower quality games
[31]
in that genre I feel like I could break
[32]
them down in a paint-by-numbers fashion
[34]
but man this time I could not have been
[36]
more wrong and what's incredible about
[38]
it is that the dev team knows exactly
[39]
what expectations you're going to be
[41]
walking into the experience with and
[42]
then they turn those expectations on
[44]
their head to make a point so we're
[45]
going to talk about spec ops the line at
[47]
length and we're going to do it with art
[48]
assistants by our new friend here our
[50]
witness Bresnik is we try to think of a
[52]
way to do so without spoilers but that
[53]
would be more or less impossible and
[55]
severely handicapped the discussion
[56]
we're itching to have so here's the plan
[58]
this week we're going to talk about as
[59]
much as we possibly can without spoiling
[61]
anything next week will be a spoiler
[63]
storm cool ok so first let's talk about
[65]
the frame of mind you have to be in to
[67]
get the most out of spec ops because one
[69]
of the things we found most fascinating
[70]
about it was the fact that it asks you
[71]
to be in a totally different mindset
[72]
than most any other triple-a game you've
[74]
played it is straight up not very fun
[76]
engaging as all hell but not fun alright
[79]
so if you haven't heard of spec ops the
[80]
line a little bit about the game some of
[82]
you might remember spec ops as a
[83]
middle-of-the-road shooter series from
[85]
the PlayStation 1 era there hasn't been
[87]
a new entry in the series since 2002 and
[89]
man what a way to restart the franchise
[91]
so often we see a series die a slow
[94]
death because the teams behind them
[95]
decided to play it safe and compete in
[97]
the same arena as Call of Duty and
[99]
Battlefield as if that were somehow less
[101]
risky well spec ops is many things safe
[103]
is not one of them it's based on Joseph
[106]
Conrad's Heart of Darkness they even
[107]
went so far as to name one of the
[108]
characters Conrad just to make sure you
[110]
know it and it deals with issues ranging
[111]
from post-traumatic stress disorder to
[113]
the use of white phosphorus which was a
[114]
huge ethical question for the US
[116]
military in the Iraq war and most of
[118]
your enemies turned out to be Americans
[119]
specifically US soldiers that detail
[122]
alone had to send some people in
[123]
marketing running for the hills I'm just
[125]
going to say it green lighting this took
[126]
balls I don't know if the team just
[128]
initially convinced people that it was
[130]
going to be you know a Call of Duty
[132]
competitor of some sort or if the folks
[135]
at 2k were just on board with this whole
[136]
crazy experiment from the beginning but
[138]
Wow hats off to you guys in far too many
[140]
boardrooms this game would have been
[142]
chopped down
[142]
apps and then paste it back together as
[144]
a low-budget modern warfare knockoff it
[146]
would have come out no one would have
[147]
bought it and then a week later no one
[148]
would even remember it existed this is
[150]
the way to restart a franchise you know
[152]
you can't compete with Call of Duty or
[153]
battlefield you don't have the massive
[155]
budget you don't have the installed fan
[156]
base or the marketing so you decide to
[158]
go big or go home and you go big in a
[160]
smart way you don't try to out call of
[162]
duty call of duty the only way to make a
[163]
shooter that has any chance of breaking
[165]
into the market today is to not compete
[167]
with those games to do something
[168]
radically different that fills some
[170]
other player need because frankly the
[172]
majority of Call of Duty and Battlefield
[173]
fans are still going to be playing the
[174]
latest entry in their favorite series
[176]
right up until the next one comes out
[177]
there is no competing directly with that
[179]
now I've seen a lot of reviews of this
[181]
game that dock a bunch of points for its
[183]
weak multiplayer mode with all due
[184]
respect to the game reviewers who said
[186]
this many of whom we know personally and
[187]
the great folks but that's insane
[189]
come on don't do that who said every
[191]
shooter has to have a multiplayer mode
[192]
much less one that's equal or superior
[194]
to the campaign we didn't mark down GTA
[196]
4 for its lackluster multiplayer mode we
[198]
don't think any less of half-life just
[200]
because deathmatch exists if Silent Hill
[202]
2 had forgettable multiplayer attacked
[203]
on would you think any less of the game
[205]
today if not if the game isn't worse for
[207]
it being there you can't be taking
[209]
points off here just take the mode from
[211]
what it is attacked on extra like bonus
[213]
materials on a DVD any additional
[215]
resources they might have poured into
[216]
that multiplayer mode would have been
[218]
diverted from the solo campaign and the
[219]
game absolutely would have suffered as a
[221]
result
[221]
just please don't perpetuate the idea
[223]
that every shooter needs multiplayer the
[225]
industry actually does listen to that
[226]
kind of thing multiplayer modes are a
[228]
major investment of development
[230]
resources when someone from corporate
[231]
wanders in and says we need multiplayer
[233]
or the reviewers are going to hate it
[234]
other aspects of the game are guaranteed
[236]
to suffer take this as a personal plea
[238]
from a developer who's seen it happen
[240]
too many times
[241]
reviews like these are the very reason
[242]
you see tacked on unnecessary and
[244]
forgettable multiplayer in so many
[246]
shooters on that note I'm pretty sure
[248]
that spec ops the line will suffer a
[249]
great deal from the fact that it just
[251]
looks so much like a modern military
[252]
shooter on the surface I think a lot of
[254]
reviewers went in prepared to judge spec
[256]
ops as a Call of Duty clone just like I
[257]
did and they came away saying yep that
[259]
sure was a mediocre Call of Duty game
[261]
rather than evaluating it on its own
[262]
merits which is almost ironic because
[264]
spec ops the line is actually the
[266]
harshest indictment of modern military
[267]
shooter games that I've ever seen
[269]
harsher than anything foxnews has ever
[271]
been able to muster what's so very
[272]
strange and in my opinion courageous
[274]
about spec ops is that it uses all of
[276]
the
[276]
oops we expect from a paint-by-numbers
[278]
modern military shooter to point out
[280]
things about the genre and help drive
[281]
the narrative which is why you can't
[283]
evaluate this as a Call of Duty game
[284]
because the reviewers are right it's a
[286]
pretty bad Call of Duty game the gunplay
[288]
isn't as good the enemies come an
[290]
obvious video gaming spawn points rather
[292]
than the chaotic set peace moments we're
[293]
used to seeing and perhaps most
[295]
importantly its principal way of
[296]
engaging the player isn't through fun
[298]
this game is great in a lot of ways and
[300]
it can be very very gripping but it is
[302]
distinctly not fun even the running and
[304]
gunning have been reduced to a banal
[306]
slog but even that helps to reinforce
[308]
the game's point what's really crazy
[310]
about this game though and what
[311]
impresses the hell out of me is that
[312]
they spend the first hour or two of the
[314]
game trying to look like a low-budget
[315]
Call of Duty ripoff just so they can
[317]
pull the rug out from under you later
[319]
and turn all of your expectations on
[320]
their head using modern military shooter
[322]
gameplay to point out just how ludicrous
[324]
modern military shooter gameplay is when
[326]
contrasted with the real thing
[327]
Jaeger I don't know how you folks ever
[329]
convinced people to let you ship this
[331]
but Wow Bravo all right next week we
[334]
rain down spoilers like well you'll see
[336]
if you haven't had a chance to check out
[338]
spec ops yet I'd love to say just go out
[340]
and buy it because I feel like they
[341]
deserve your purchase but admittedly
[342]
this is a game you can easily beat in a
[344]
weekend if you're a little stretched for
[345]
cash borrow it from a friend or see if
[347]
you can track down a blockbuster that
[348]
hasn't closed yet and rent a copy the
[350]
game is full of flaws but we're in the
[352]
doldrums of summer here if any of what
[354]
I'm saying has piqued your interest
[355]
check it out if for no other reason than
[357]
to be able to join the discussion next
[358]
week I guarantee you it may not look it
[361]
but this is something unique and for
[363]
those of you who do play it this weekend
[364]
when you hear a character say the line
[365]
because you wanted to feel like
[367]
something you're not he's not saying
[368]
that to your character that line is
[370]
pointed at you I'm not sure I've ever
[372]
had a game punch me in the gut so hard
[373]
thank you our witness for helping us out
[375]
we'll see you guys next week
[378]
you
[416]
you
