How To Write A Cover Letter That Recruiters Will Love - YouTube

Channel: Work It Daily

[0]
hey everyone welcome back it's JT from
[2]
work at daily and today I'm going to be
[4]
talking about cover letters but before I
[6]
begin I want to welcome all new viewers
[8]
and remind you to hit the subscribe
[9]
button down below we provide great
[11]
content on a weekly basis about job
[13]
search and career development and if you
[15]
hit the little belt you'll even get
[16]
reminders when we upload something new
[17]
okay alright let's get started I want to
[19]
talk about these cover letters
[20]
specifically how to write one the
[22]
recruiters absolutely love and how to
[24]
get them at hello before I begin I want
[26]
to ask you a question true or false do
[29]
recruiters read cover letters what do
[31]
you think well the truth is most people
[33]
think they don't especially because they
[35]
never hear from recruiters but I'm here
[37]
to tell you that's false
[38]
our company myself personally we work
[40]
with thousands of recruiters and they
[41]
tell us they read the good ones they
[43]
immediately get rid of the bad ones so
[45]
let's talk about that what we're saying
[47]
is that most cover letters stink that's
[49]
the truth it's painful it's hard to hear
[51]
and why is that well there's too much
[53]
blah blah blah going on in that cover
[55]
letter and a lot of brag brag brag and
[58]
that is what turns recruiters off they
[61]
can open a cover letter and skim it
[63]
quickly and if they see that it reads
[65]
just like every other cover letter they
[67]
get and it's all about you and how great
[69]
you think you are they're not going to
[71]
bother to read it and that is the truth
[73]
you have to have an attention-grabbing
[75]
cover letter today that's the secret to
[78]
getting it read and the truth is this
[80]
isn't a powerful tool it's not something
[82]
that we should gloss over in my personal
[84]
opinion and I've been a career coach for
[86]
over 15 years the cover letter is more
[88]
important more valuable and has more
[90]
power than your resume does and I'm
[93]
going to talk about why that is today
[94]
when you show a personal connection when
[97]
you reveal something about yourself that
[99]
evokes an emotion in the reader that is
[103]
a powerful cover letter that is what's
[105]
going to get a recruiter to take a look
[106]
at your resume and give you a phone call
[108]
you have to really connect with the
[110]
employer on a very personal level so how
[113]
do you do that well there's a couple
[114]
ways you could for example tell them how
[117]
you've come to learn that what they do
[119]
is special so how in your personal
[122]
experience in your life experience did
[123]
you learn that what they do is different
[125]
better faster cheaper smarter more
[128]
quality whatever it is how do you
[130]
emotionally connect with their brand
[132]
tell them that story or even better tell
[135]
them about the first time you ever used
[136]
their product and service I mean what
[138]
better way to explain I get you I feel
[141]
connected to you and I want to work for
[142]
you than telling them a personal story
[144]
about your experience with them and
[147]
lastly you can just tell them about an
[150]
overall life experience that helps you
[152]
feel connected to their tribe something
[154]
that's happened to you that has caused
[155]
you to have a value or a belief that you
[157]
know aligns with their values and
[159]
beliefs and that you can make that
[160]
actual connection the fact is the more
[163]
personal the cover letter the better it
[165]
makes all the difference in the world
[167]
and if you think about it it's really
[169]
not that hard to do so one example I can
[172]
tell you about is a client of ours who
[173]
wanted to work for a fashion company
[174]
specifically was a t-shirt company and
[176]
there's really fun logos and quotes on
[178]
them and what she did is to hell' the
[180]
story about her nephew and how the first
[182]
time he was wearing that t-shirt and
[183]
this whole hilarious story of one
[185]
unfolded and how the meaning of that
[187]
t-shirt took on a whole new level as a
[189]
result of what transpired great cover
[192]
letter really fun and guess what she got
[194]
the call another example of client of
[196]
ours
[197]
wanted to work for a medical equipment
[198]
company and he told the story about the
[201]
time that his grandmother was in the
[202]
hospital and how he noticed their logo
[204]
was on the hospital bed and some of the
[206]
key pieces of equipment in her room and
[207]
how important these key pieces of
[209]
equipment were to the care for her in
[212]
the final stages of her life very very
[214]
powerful and emotional guess what he got
[216]
a call too so in both of these examples
[218]
you can see that when you get them at
[219]
hello when you tell a story that just
[221]
wakes them up you get their heart and
[223]
their mind engaged and that's really the
[225]
key here you're trying to draw them in
[227]
what are we trying to do we're trying to
[229]
create an emotional reaction we want
[231]
them to read something that draws up
[233]
emotion in them and why is that because
[235]
when you do that when you give that
[237]
story and it creates that emotional
[238]
reaction you're creating connection and
[240]
all of a sudden that recruiter a hiring
[243]
manager that employer is feeling
[244]
connected to you the job seeker you're
[247]
not just a piece of paper anymore that's
[249]
really powerful don't you think we call
[251]
this at work a daily the disruptive
[253]
cover letter because you're disrupting
[254]
the brain of the person that's reading
[256]
it and when you focus and you disrupt
[259]
this reader
[259]
you're you're getting them out of
[261]
autopilot you're taking them off that oh
[263]
here's just another cover letter that I
[265]
should throw away
[266]
there all of a sudden seeing you as a
[268]
person again not as a piece of paper but
[270]
as a real human being and I can't tell
[272]
you how many times our members have used
[275]
a disruptive cover letter and they get a
[277]
phone call saying this is the best cover
[278]
letter I've read in months I remember
[281]
the last time I read a cover letter that
[282]
got my attention like this the best part
[284]
is they're now on the phone with the
[285]
hiring manager okay so now that I've got
[288]
you understanding the power of a
[289]
disruptive cover letter I want to walk
[290]
you through how easy it is to create one
[292]
because it really only takes three
[294]
simple steps first is to watch a quick
[296]
video tutorial you're gonna need to
[297]
understand you're gonna want to see
[298]
specifics you're gonna want to see
[299]
examples so that you know how you should
[302]
be writing this cover letter the next
[304]
step is to use a template you can have a
[306]
template that tells you the beginning
[307]
the middle of the end and what kind of
[310]
content should be in each one so that
[311]
you know you're doing it right and then
[312]
the third step is you should run it by
[314]
somebody for review it really always
[315]
helps have a second set of eyes somebody
[317]
who knows and understands cover letters
[319]
and recruiting who can also make sure
[320]
that grammatically you don't have any
[322]
typos anything like that
[323]
right so you want to be able to know hey
[325]
I did this right average time to do
[327]
something like this is about one to two
[328]
hours but think about it once you've
[330]
built one of these a lot of times you
[332]
can reuse it for other job opportunities
[334]
you just tweak a little bit of the
[336]
information usually you're trying to to
[338]
get a job in a certain skill set or
[340]
certain industry so if you choose a
[342]
story that ties to that you're gonna be
[343]
able to reuse it but more importantly
[345]
you do want to spend this quality time
[347]
if you could spend an hour building a
[349]
cover letter but it gets you the phone
[351]
call it's better than you building a
[353]
generic cover letter that never gets
[354]
read and again we see such incredible
[357]
results at work daily with the
[358]
disruptive cover letter we know that it
[360]
works and that it's worth to invest that
[361]
whopping one or two hours to do this
[363]
so what do you think with learning how
[365]
to write your own disruptive cover
[367]
letter be good to your career and if so
[368]
how much would it be worth we personally
[370]
believe it's priceless owning your
[373]
career and being able to manage it and
[374]
taking control of that job search
[375]
process that's a pretty important thing
