[0]
exciting news in march of 2021 that by
[3]
administration announced that as part of
[5]
their stimulus
[6]
recovery act that they are going to
[10]
allow six months of free cobra
[14]
continuation
[18]
you worked for a large employer with
[20]
over 20 lives
[22]
and you lost your job so you
[25]
involuntarily lost your job
[26]
you did not quit you can get six months
[29]
of free cobra from
[30]
april through september 2021 so
[33]
that's a very generous benefit because
[35]
normally if you lose your job
[37]
and you have you have to have it has to
[38]
be a large employer or 20 lives
[40]
you are eligible to continue on your
[42]
health insurance plan for a certain
[43]
number of months
[45]
but whereas normally you paid a
[47]
percentage of your health insurance
[48]
and your employer paid a percentage if
[50]
you're on cobra you have to pay both
[52]
parts
[52]
and most people can't afford that but
[54]
many of you have
[55]
experience with cobra so they're going
[58]
to say
[59]
hey you get a free cobra you don't pay
[60]
your part and the employer doesn't pay
[62]
his part
[63]
so everybody's like this would really
[66]
help you know because we were laid off
[68]
but i wasn't laid off because of covid
[70]
necessarily
[71]
the law does not specify that you were
[73]
laid off
[75]
because of the coronavirus it doesn't
[76]
have to have anything to do with the
[78]
coronavirus if you lost your job for any
[79]
reason
[80]
they terminated you because they don't
[81]
like you any reason
[83]
you're eligible to apply to get this
[85]
free cobra
[87]
now everybody is calling me and they're
[89]
saying how do i get it this could really
[91]
help
[91]
nobody knows the government said by may
[93]
31st
[95]
we expect employers will be a lot loud
[98]
we'll have the information necessary
[100]
to let people start applying well that's
[102]
already two months into a six months
[104]
program so that's the government for you
[106]
it's currently april so people like i
[108]
could use the money now
[111]
well we know this much from the law
[112]
which is you know
[114]
you know like anything it's this is a
[116]
summary of it
[117]
is that the employer will have to pay
[120]
for all of cobra so the employer has to
[122]
pay his percentage
[124]
and your percentage all of it and then
[126]
seek reimbursement
[127]
through the government so for for the
[130]
small employers out there like us
[132]
we're not exactly excited about that but
[135]
for the employees that lost their job
[137]
they're very excited about the lifeline
[139]
even though we're not really sure when
[140]
the lifeline's going to come
[142]
so it's for those six months and i've
[144]
had people already call me they're like
[145]
i already declined cobra
[147]
can i can i go back and get it and with
[150]
cobra once you decline it
[152]
if you've declined it it's been over 60
[154]
days then you can't
[155]
go back but if you've declined it and
[157]
it's been less than 60 days then yes you
[158]
can go back to your
[159]
old employer go to your hr department
[162]
and you could get back
[163]
on cobra i don't know right now if
[165]
they're going to make you pay it
[167]
until the employers figure out what the
[169]
rules are and then they pay it
[171]
because a lot of people can't afford it
[172]
that's why they didn't take it to begin
[173]
with and
[174]
if you're on medicare which most of our
[177]
viewers are on medicare
[179]
i'll stick this in there that cobra
[182]
is not credible coverage for medicare
[184]
part b
[186]
so if you're eligible for medicare part
[187]
b and you're like oh instead of taking
[189]
medicare i think i'll just take this
[191]
cobra deal
[192]
you could end up with a part d penalty
[195]
and get locked out
[196]
i'm not going to go into that because
[198]
it's it's confusing it's
[200]
frustrating it's something that we in
[202]
our industry have been working
[203]
very hard to change the law and we
[206]
we haven't been able to get a change
[207]
because all these other things keep
[208]
popping up like the election and
[210]
coven um i i feel very confident it will
[213]
get changed but for right now still
[216]
and probably for at least the next year
[218]
cobra is not credible coverage so if
[220]
you're eligible for medicare
[222]
part b you need to take it and don't go
[225]
onto cobra
[226]
because when you come off of cobra you
[228]
might have that penalty for late part b
[230]
which is
[230]
very steep it's 10 a year and you'll
[232]
have it for the rest of your life
[234]
okay so if you make this mistake because
[236]
you didn't work with an agent
[237]
i can't fix it later so call us here at
[240]
the medicare family
[241]
my family would love to help your family
[243]
with these very important
[246]
decisions that are going to impact you
[247]
for the rest of your life
[249]
unfortunately right now you can't call
[251]
us with your cobra questions because the
[253]
government hasn't given us those
[254]
answers yet they have said that we will
[257]
know
