Rep. Dingell On Trump Signing Relief Bill: ‘This Is A Down Payment’ | Stephanie Ruhle | MSNBC - YouTube
Channel: MSNBC
[0]
so as the president debated whether or
[2]
not to sign
[3]
this bill over the holiday this message
[6]
from one democrat
[8]
it is christmas eve but
[13]
it is not a silent night all
[17]
is not calm for too many
[20]
nothing is bright and for too many
[23]
they are not sleeping peacefully i'd beg
[26]
the president
[27]
to know how many people in this country
[30]
are scared
[32]
fearful terror hungry
[36]
and that we must get a bill done
[40]
so that we are helping americans
[46]
that was congresswoman debbie dangle
[48]
from michigan
[49]
and she is um joining me now
[51]
congresswoman thanks so much for joining
[52]
us on this happy holidays to you and
[54]
yours by the way
[55]
um that was an incredibly
[59]
uh impassioned moment there
[62]
in which you pled with the president to
[64]
understand the plight of so many
[66]
americans 14 million americans that were
[68]
on the brink of losing unemployment
[69]
insurance at that moment just a couple
[71]
of days away
[73]
so many food insecure in this country
[75]
many of which i've i've
[77]
interviewed on the air who don't
[79]
necessarily know where their next meal
[80]
is coming from and how they're going to
[81]
pay
[83]
their rent and throughout this time
[85]
period the president held out throughout
[87]
the weekend he was golfing as i was just
[88]
talking to garrett hague
[90]
instead of signing this bill into law do
[92]
you think the president even
[94]
understands or really cares for that
[96]
matter about the plight of americans and
[99]
what they're dealing with
[100]
in this very moment economically so
[104]
what i think is that he has no idea the
[106]
kind of anxiety that he caused
[108]
when we weren't going to get that code
[110]
relief bill out and not
[111]
only for the issues you just mentioned
[113]
but the eviction
[115]
uh moratorium expires at the end of this
[117]
week and i had person after person
[119]
calling me worried that they were going
[120]
to be kicked out on the street
[122]
you showed the restaurant owners i have
[124]
restaurant about 10 restaurant owners
[126]
that i talk
[126]
almost every single day and they're not
[128]
only worried about whether the
[130]
restaurants are going to survive but
[131]
they're employees
[132]
and the anxiety this weekend on
[135]
christmas weekend makes me sad
[137]
i'm just i'm trying to bring us all back
[139]
together
[140]
he signed it today we will pass this
[143]
additional 2 000 and
[145]
if it does not pass on suspension we
[147]
will bring it up under regular order i
[149]
predict it will pass
[150]
out the question is what's the united
[152]
states senate going to do
[155]
so so you did sign it and that's
[157]
fantastic and a lot of americans waking
[159]
up this morning are breathing a sigh of
[160]
relief because hopefully that money is
[161]
going to be in the mail over the next
[162]
couple of weeks
[163]
they're going to have to wait it out and
[165]
that anxiety will build but it will be
[166]
in the mail over the next couple of
[168]
weeks that
[168]
that said congresswoman why did it take
[172]
so darn long right the last time we saw
[174]
a bill passed was was in may
[176]
we anticipated this was going to happen
[178]
this is way three i mean let me just
[179]
talk you through some numbers and you
[180]
mentioned some of them you know the
[182]
plight of so many americans 110 000
[184]
restaurants
[185]
have closed the service and industry is
[187]
suffering suffering tremendously right
[189]
now more than 8 million have fallen into
[190]
poverty since then an estimated 50
[192]
million americans are going to have
[193]
experience food insecurity
[195]
by the end of the year we knew this
[197]
would happen
[198]
why is it always the 11th hour
[202]
especially it seems when we are up
[204]
against a government
[205]
shutdown it shouldn't be that way and we
[209]
have been trying and everybody points
[211]
fingers and says it was
[212]
close it was mitch mcconnell here's what
[214]
my hope is for 2021. it is unforgivable
[217]
quite frankly that people have
[219]
suffered as much as they have we did not
[220]
have a national covet strategy
[223]
as we go into 2021 i hope that all of us
[226]
can look
[226]
and try to find ways that we can work
[229]
together more that we can stop this fear
[231]
and this hatred and remember that united
[234]
we can get a whole lot
[235]
more done so there's this is a down
[238]
payment
[238]
what he signed yesterday over the
[240]
weekend and what if god willing we get
[242]
asked today and tomorrow through the
[244]
senate it's a down payment
[246]
we're going to have a president who
[248]
understands that people are hurting
[250]
he wants to work across the aisle he
[252]
knows what compassion
[253]
empathy kindness caring
[256]
action are and will start to bring us
[259]
together
[260]
and i hope that that that is my wish for
[262]
2021 that it won't take so long
[265]
we compromise isn't a dirty word but
[267]
that we need to remember
[268]
our job in congress is delivered for the
[271]
americans
