New York City Taxi vs. Uber and Lyft - YouTube
Channel: Urban Caffeine
[8]
nowadays people tend to default to聽
uber or lyft or other share rides聽聽
[13]
rather than take a taxi in new york city i was聽
like this when i first moved to new york i was聽聽
[18]
too millennial to ever ride the taxi i felt taxis聽
were antiquated and that share rides were a way of聽聽
[24]
embracing progress and ultimately the future that聽
was a little naive of me to automatically conclude聽聽
[30]
when i had never ridden a new york city taxi but聽
after living in new york for a few years i've come聽聽
[36]
to realize that taxis are not as irrelevant as聽
one might think especially now that there's an聽聽
[42]
app that's very similar to the technology that聽
lyft and uber use there are situations where聽聽
[47]
taxis are better to take over lyft and uber聽
and there are times when it's the opposite聽聽
[52]
things to consider are pricing and convenience聽
for example taxis don't have surge pricing the聽聽
[57]
way uber and lyft does so in this video we are聽
going to talk about the general rules of thumb聽聽
[63]
of when is it better to take a taxi and when is聽
it better to take a share ride like lyft or uber聽聽
[68]
and at the end of this video i'll also talk a聽
little bit about the taxi industry and how it聽聽
[73]
relates to share rides like lyft and uber but聽
first welcome to my channel my name is thea and聽聽
[78]
you're watching urban caffeine where we talk about聽
urban life and culture and basically surviving the聽聽
[84]
urban jungle if you are new to my channel i invite聽
you to subscribe and hit that notification bell聽聽
[89]
hitting that notification bell assures you that聽
you won't miss future videos and also don't forget聽聽
[94]
to like this video and if you want a full guide on聽
how to ride the new york city taxis i've made an聽聽
[100]
entire video on that link is in the description聽
below so when is it better to take a taxi over聽聽
[106]
lyft and uber and the other way around i'm going聽
to list my general rules of thumb here please know聽聽
[112]
that these are not engraved in stone it's always聽
worth checking the prices when you can also every聽聽
[117]
city is different the taxi world is going to be聽
different in new york than it is in las vegas or聽聽
[122]
san francisco and so your taxi experiences will聽
differ from city to city one scenario when it's聽聽
[128]
better to take a taxi over share ride is when you聽
are traveling short distances have you ever tried聽聽
[134]
calling a lyft or uber when you're only traveling聽
10 blocks first of all you might be thinking聽聽
[140]
why not just walk these 10 blocks that's about聽
10 15ish minutes which is not a bad walk in new聽聽
[146]
york and i would say that too if it weren't聽
so cold that your snot's turning to icicles聽聽
[152]
yeah new york gets pretty cold some months so i聽
tried that once calling a lift because it was just聽聽
[158]
way too cold and the subway was just not reachable聽
with your average human effort so first i had to聽聽
[166]
wait five minutes for my lyft ride to just even be聽
in my vicinity and then our stars couldn't align聽聽
[173]
and he couldn't find me so we had to do the whole聽
phone tag thing that was another five minutes and聽聽
[179]
by then there's just ice crystals in my blood聽
what killed me the most is that the amount of聽聽
[184]
time it took me from ordering lift to even getting聽
in the car there were probably like several taxis聽聽
[190]
that drove by and i could have easily hailed one聽
i probably would have gotten to my destination聽聽
[195]
half the time but no i was way too millennial for聽
any of that on the flip side a time that you might聽聽
[203]
want to take a share ride is if you're traveling聽
a longer distance the reason behind this is based聽聽
[208]
on predictability of costs i find that the price聽
that uber gives me at the beginning of my ride聽聽
[213]
stays the same despite unexpected traffic or聽
any delays in my trip there comes a time in聽聽
[220]
every new yorker's life where they will be struck聽
by unexpected oppressive traffic you will never聽聽
[227]
know when this time comes but it is a prophecy聽
destined to happen like a motorcade that appears聽聽
[232]
from nowhere and causes all traffic to stop in聽
all directions for about half an hour and this聽聽
[239]
happened to me a 10 minute ride ended up being 45聽
minutes long and because murphy was having a roll聽聽
[246]
that day on the way back in an uber i hit the聽
same motorcade so a 30 minute errand turned out聽聽
[252]
to be a two-hour extravaganza with traffic delays聽
like that riding a taxi would have charged me the聽聽
[258]
entire time we were idle during that motorcade but聽
since i was riding an uber that wasn't the case聽聽
[263]
so what do i mean by short and long distances聽
short distances are about less than a mile聽聽
[269]
maybe a mile and a half anything for two or聽
more miles i recommend taking a share ride聽聽
[274]
which brings me to the second instance when it's聽
generally better to take a taxi and that's if聽聽
[279]
you're traveling within manhattan even though聽
brooklyn and queens are gentrifying rapidly聽聽
[284]
there's something in the air that makes brooklyn聽
brooklyn and queens queens one of the contributing聽聽
[290]
elements to this is the fact that yellow cabs are聽
not hiding out in the bushes in these boroughs聽聽
[296]
manhattan is the watering hole for these yellow聽
cabs and you won't find many of them in the outer聽聽
[300]
boroughs that's why when you're traveling within聽
the confines of manhattan especially below upper聽聽
[306]
manhattan it's far more convenient to take a聽
taxi that is if you don't want to walk or take聽聽
[311]
public transit but if you want to take public聽
transit like the bus or the subway or the ferry聽聽
[317]
i've made videos on these and links are in the聽
description below also from my understanding and聽聽
[323]
if you're a taxi driver correct me if i'm wrong is聽
that taxi drivers prefer to stay within manhattan聽聽
[328]
maybe an exception to this are the airport rides聽
because when you're picking up and dropping off a聽聽
[333]
passenger in manhattan chances are you're gonna聽
get another passenger right away whereas if you聽聽
[338]
drop off a passenger in the outer boroughs you聽
might not get a passenger on your way back into聽聽
[344]
the city by the way some local lingo for you new聽
yorkers call manhattan the city it's because of聽聽
[350]
this infrequency the inner borough travel would聽
most likely mean you would have to order a ride聽聽
[355]
rather than hail one off the street at that point聽
a taxi is no longer different than a lift or uber聽聽
[361]
except that like i said earlier pricing would be聽
a lot more predictable unless prices are surging聽聽
[368]
one thing that's nice about taxis over share rides聽
like lyft and uber is that they don't have surge聽聽
[373]
pricing well they do but it's very minimal but聽
sometimes these share rides will have promos curb聽聽
[382]
the app you use in conjunction with riding taxis聽
also has promos but not as often as lyft and uber聽聽
[388]
some of the most popular trips that both taxis聽
and share rides take are to and from the airports
[396]
new york is served by three commercial airports聽
jfk laguardia and newark of course there are聽聽
[402]
cheaper ways to get to and from these airports聽
other than taxis and share rides like lyft and聽聽
[408]
uber and that is through public transportation聽
and i plan to make a future video on public聽聽
[413]
transportation to and from all these airports聽
so subscribe and hit that notification bell聽聽
[420]
when it comes to traveling from jfk airport聽
into manhattan a taxi might be a good choice聽聽
[425]
because jfk to anywhere in manhattan has a flat聽
rate of 52 dollars granted you have to add tax聽聽
[431]
fees and tip but even so the total might聽
still be better than taking a lyft or uber聽聽
[437]
as for laguardia taxis there do not offer flat聽
rate but many times when i'm at the airport聽聽
[443]
surge pricing takes into effect because of the odd聽
hours the rush hour and the high demand for lyft聽聽
[449]
and ubers and other share rides in the airport聽
an experience i had not too long ago is when i聽聽
[455]
was at laguardia trying to get an uber home and聽
normally a trip from laguardia airport to where聽聽
[461]
i live is about $30 to $35 and that night uber was聽
charging a whopping $65 and that's when i learned聽聽
[470]
that a taxi ride from the airport to my home was聽
only $20 if you notice that prices are surging聽聽
[476]
when you're in laguardia airport or any airport聽
for that matter you might want to check on taxis聽聽
[481]
also consider where you're going to from laguardia聽
remember that laguardia is a stone's throw away聽聽
[486]
from manhattan and it's already in queens because聽
remember like i said sometimes if the distance is聽聽
[492]
short enough you might want to consider taking a聽
taxi and when it comes to convenience there are聽聽
[497]
official taxi lines at the airport because聽
sometimes when it's very busy it's hard to聽聽
[502]
sync up with your lyft or uber driver as for聽
newark since newark airport is in new jersey聽聽
[508]
there's going to be a guaranteed toll fee since聽
you are crossing state borders into new york聽聽
[513]
it doesn't matter if you take a taxi a lyft an聽
uber the toll gates do not discriminate but when聽聽
[520]
it comes to a cab on top of the base fare toll聽
and tip there's an additional $17.50 surcharge聽聽
[527]
i don't know about you but that $17.50 surcharge聽
is already enough for me to lean towards lyft or聽聽
[533]
uber and lastly i want to call out the state of聽
the taxi industry today for some context there's聽聽
[539]
a set amount of taxis that can operate within new聽
york at any given time to operate a taxi you need聽聽
[546]
a medallion and this is basically a permit so聽
that you can pick up passengers off the streets聽聽
[552]
and this is not exclusive to new york聽
other cities use the medallion system聽聽
[556]
and i can create a whole video on just the taxi聽
medallion and if this is something that interests聽聽
[562]
you let me know in the comments below anyway these聽
medallions are either bought or auctioned off so聽聽
[567]
with that in mind about 15ish years ago there was聽
an inflation in the price of these taxi medallions聽聽
[574]
but not just in new york other cities experienced聽
this we're talking chicago san francisco miami聽聽
[581]
boston etc and to give you an idea of how insane聽
the inflation was in chicago a $50,000 medallion聽聽
[589]
started costing close to $400,000 this was absurd聽
and this had a lot to do with investors trying to聽聽
[596]
take advantage of the system so with these聽
inflated prices these taxi medallion owners聽聽
[602]
found themselves heavy into debt banking on the聽
fact that the taxi industry is going to be a solid聽聽
[608]
one for years to come but as we all know lyft聽
and uber came into play and it just disrupted聽聽
[616]
the way we do semi-private transportation the聽
taxi industry couldn't evolve fast enough to聽聽
[622]
compete with the innovations of share rides like聽
lyft and uber and spoiler alert the taxi industry聽聽
[628]
started to decline with the emergence of share聽
rides like lyft and uber these taxi medallion聽聽
[634]
owners found themselves in a tight spot because聽
the value of a medallion suddenly plummeted聽聽
[639]
we're talking like a million dollar medallion in聽
new york city costing only $75,000 to $100,000聽聽
[647]
this situation was so dire that there was聽
even some taxi owners who took their own lives聽聽
[652]
personally i like to support the local community聽
and small businesses so i try to take a taxi as聽聽
[658]
often as i can when i can and in new york i find聽
a lot of situations where taxis tend to be cheaper聽聽
[664]
than share rides like lyft and uber of course聽
taxis and share rides are only two options of the聽聽
[670]
many options of transportation in new york city聽
my preferred way is still the subway and buses聽聽
[676]
and i've made videos on both of these as well as a聽
whole playlist of all the different transportation聽聽
[682]
options in the big apple i hope you enjoyed聽
