Channel: Top Tennis Training - Pro Tennis Lessons

[8]
Hey everyone, Simon here with Top Tennis Training,聽聽
[10]
and in this video I want to show you how聽 to deal with those low balls in tennis
[20]
now often when we're playing someone who likes聽 to slice a lot or if someone's playing with聽聽
[24]
an eastern forehand grip or聽 even a continental forehand grip聽聽
[27]
and they kind of guide that ball the ball can end聽 up bouncing on your side and then skidding through聽聽
[33]
especially if you're playing on a court聽 like grass on a faster surface like聽聽
[36]
carpet courts or artificial grass now dealing聽 with these type of balls is a nightmare especially聽聽
[42]
if you don't know how to actually handle those聽 type of balls and give yourself the best chance聽聽
[46]
to actually get that back in and put it in an聽 awkward position for the player on the other side
[56]
now often when we play against someone who likes聽 to slice the ball a lot it might not look like the聽聽
[61]
ball has much pace so it's deceiving it's almost聽 as if it's floating but then after the bounce聽聽
[67]
that's when it skids and comes through quite low聽 so the first step in dealing with these type of聽聽
[75]
balls is knowing what to do with that type of聽 shot if you receive one of those low balls and聽聽
[81]
you go for an aggressive flat shot even trying聽 to hit a winner off it you're putting yourself聽聽
[86]
at high risk of making an error so you're playing聽 low percentage tennis when you go aggressive on聽聽
[91]
those low balls so where should we aim this type聽 of shot and what should your tactical intention be聽聽
[96]
when you're dealing with a low ball hey guys alex聽 here and this part of the video has been sponsored聽聽

[170]

[176]
and for that you'll receive 200聽 gems and 500 gold to get you started聽聽
[182]
i'll see you on court now if we think about the聽 tennis court the high percentage tennis from the聽聽
[187]
baseline is normally cross-court now this is聽 because the net is the lowest in the middle
[202]
by going cross-court you're going over the聽 lowest part of the net but also by hitting聽聽
[206]
cross-court you have the most amount聽 of space to miss by so if i hit it down聽聽
[209]
the line and i hit the ball slightly late聽 the ball is going to go into the tram line聽聽
[213]
or even worse if i hit the ball cross-court and i聽 hit the ball slightly late i'm still going to hit聽聽
[218]
it into the middle of the court and that's still聽 an okay tactic when dealing with these low balls
[239]
the second step in dealing with these low balls聽 is knowing which type of shot you should hit聽聽
[243]
to actually get that ball back聽 in the court now you can hit flat聽聽
[247]
you can hit slice or you can hit aggressive聽 topspin so you can use all three options but聽聽
[252]
if you choose to hit the ball quite flat you'll聽 have to guide the ball and almost take a bit聽聽
[257]
of pace off just to get the ball back in the聽 court if the ball's low and i'm hitting it flat聽聽
[262]
and aggressive the ball is going to most likely聽 go into the net or go long because it doesn't聽聽
[266]
have that arc on the ball that we need to get聽 over the net and dipping in before the lines
[276]
now if you choose to drive the ball with topspin聽 this will allow you to be very aggressive with聽聽
[280]
the racket head speed during that contact聽 zone this will allow you to go for more power聽聽
[284]
but still maintain that high percentage聽 and this is because of that arc聽聽
[288]
we want the ball to go up off our strings聽 we want the ball to lift up over the net so聽聽
[293]
we know that we're not going to hit the net and聽 then we want the ball to dip in before the lines
[304]
and the only way to do this successfully time聽 and time again is hitting aggressive topspin聽聽
[310]
now we'll get more into the technical side聽 of hitting those aggressive top spin shots聽聽
[314]
in the next step but for now if聽 you're hitting with that topspin聽聽
[317]
it will give you the chance to be more aggressive聽 it will give you the chance to hit that higher聽聽
[321]
net clearance and if you choose to slice the聽 ball this is also a great way with dealing聽聽
[326]
with those low balls because of the angle of the聽 strings it allows us to then pick the ball up聽聽
[332]
and also impart our own slice that under spin so聽 that when the ball bounces on the opponent's side聽聽
[337]
it stays low and makes it much harder for聽 my opponent to attack me on the next shot
[356]
if they're dealing with a ball that's down by聽 their ankles now for them it's almost like the聽聽
[360]
shot we've just dealt with we're turning聽 that defensive shot that we've just hit聽聽
[364]
into a neutral or even aggressive shot so聽 we're changing the dynamics of that point聽聽
[369]
simply by hitting that slice and the third step聽 in dealing with these low balls is the execution聽聽
[386]
so the first step to executing it well is聽 getting down low and maintaining that wide聽聽
[390]
athletic stance and maintaining that low center of聽 gravity this will help you to get under the ball聽聽
[396]
this will help you to be balanced and this聽 will help you to deal with those low balls聽聽
[408]
now notice in this clip how low alex gets with his聽 body look at the knee bend right here now this is聽聽
[414]
crucial when handling a slice now as we get to聽 the ball we want to maintain that low center of聽聽
[420]
gravity and this could be an open stance so聽 if i'm going to hit an open stance forehand聽聽
[425]
i want to make sure that i'm getting down聽 almost in that lunge position on my right聽聽
[429]
leg if i'm a right-handed player so i want to be聽 in that position here so that when the ball does聽聽
[434]
come through i can easily still get under the聽 ball with my racket face which is crucial if聽聽
[440]
i want to have that aggressive topspin so i'm聽 getting to the ball early i'm getting behind聽聽
[444]
the bounce so that i can deal with a bad bounce i聽 can deal with a fastball if it's skidding through聽聽
[450]
so i'm getting behind the bounce and i'm getting聽 there as quickly as possible what you don't want聽聽
[455]
to be doing is seeing a ball that's coming through聽 and skidding and taking your time and then rushing聽聽
[460]
at the last second you want to get behind the聽 ball flight so that if the ball does bounce badly聽聽
[465]
or it comes through extremely quick you're ready聽 to adapt and you're ready to still hit that shot
[475]
so we're getting there quick we're staying low聽 we're having that wide athletic base when we're聽聽
[480]
in that position and we're making sure that we get聽 the rack ahead if we're going to drive that shot聽聽
[485]
we're making sure that we don't have a massive聽 swing there's no point in having a huge swing if聽聽
[490]
you're dealing with a low ball because for this聽 type of shot the main intention should be that聽聽
[495]
you're getting your rack ahead down below the聽 ball level this might mean that if the ball is聽聽
[500]
down by my knee my racket is down here so that聽 when i'm actually making contact i'm coming up聽聽
[506]
from that low to high position with the聽 rack ahead so it's getting the racket head聽聽
[511]
completely below the ball level so that when聽 i'm actually making contact i'm brushing up
[525]
and if you're hitting the ball cross court聽 a great way for you to think about this聽聽
[529]
is imagine the ball as a clock so we have 12聽 o'clock and we have six o'clock on the bottom聽聽
[535]
if i'm going cross court with my forehand i'll hit聽 the ball from five o'clock to 11 o'clock so across聽聽
[541]
the ball and up the ball this will make sure that聽 i hit the ball cross-court but also give it that聽聽
[545]
nice arc that we need to clear the net and and聽 get the ball dipping into the core so brushing聽聽
[551]
the ball from five to eleven o'clock if you're聽 going cross-court if you're going down the middle聽聽
[556]
or down the line you can then hit from six o'clock聽 to twelve o'clock this is the same thing on your聽聽
[562]
backhand it doesn't matter if you're one-handed or聽 two-handed backhand player you make sure that you聽聽
[567]
get down below that ball so that you can actually聽 drop the rack ahead and then brush up at a point聽聽
[572]
of contact if i'm hitting my backhand court聽 i'll be going from seven to one o'clock and if聽聽
[578]
i'm hitting my backhand into the middle or down聽 the line i'll be going from 6 to 12 once again聽聽
[584]
if i want to slice that ball i have to open my聽 strings much more than on a normal slice so if i聽聽
[590]
have a normal slice around shoulder level i might聽 have my strings quite flat towards the net because聽聽
[595]
i can be aggressive on that slice and still clear聽 the net but on those lower balls i have to really聽聽
[600]
open up the string bed and almost imagine i'm聽 hitting that slice with my strings fully open to聽聽
[605]
the sky because this will allow me to have that聽 under spin so it'll make it much harder for the聽聽
[610]
opponent to deal with but also will help me to聽 clear the net now the swing path will change on聽聽
[616]
those lower slices on a mid height slice i might聽 be going from high to low with my rack ahead this聽聽
[622]
is to cut down on the ball and be aggressive but聽 on those lower slices i'll have to go from either聽聽
[627]
a medium position to a medium position to kind of聽 guide that slice with the strings open or even go聽聽
[633]
from medium to high to lift that ball more if聽 it's extremely low i'll have to go from a low聽聽
[639]
position with my racket head to a medium or low to聽 high so you won't be using that high to low swing聽聽
[646]
path on a low ball because then you'll net the聽 shot now another good way to deal with these low聽聽
[651]
balls is using that open stance and almost doing a聽 lunge to lunge and this is something you see a lot聽聽
[656]
with the wta players when they're dealing with a聽 fast global they'll get into that loaded position聽聽
[661]
on the outside lake so this is your right聽 leg for the forehand and from here instead聽聽
[665]
of doing this and lifting up they'll go from聽 this right leg lunging to left leg lunging
[679]
so it's almost like you're going from a right leg聽 lunge to a left leg lunge so once again they're聽聽
[684]
getting the racket here right leg lunge left聽 leg lunge this will ensure that they stay low聽聽
[690]
all the way through the contact point and聽 don't lift up too early and lose their聽聽
[694]
balance the same can be done on the back end聽 so i can go from that left leg loaded position聽聽
[701]
to a right leg loaded position this will ensure聽 that i stay low and have that balance all the way聽聽
[706]
through the shot so there you have it how to deal聽 with low balls in tennis i hope you've enjoyed聽聽
