Vanguard ETFs and Index Funds - What You Should Know - YouTube
Channel: Jarrad Morrow
[0]
the vanguard group is like a car that
[1]
you can drive across the country it's
[3]
not the flashiest one on the road but it
[6]
still looks good and is the most
[7]
reliable one out there but there are a
[9]
few things that you need to know about
[10]
the vanguard etf and index fund
[12]
investments that not a lot of people are
[14]
aware of that will probably change how
[16]
you view the company in this video i'm
[18]
going to take you behind the scenes to
[19]
look under the hood of what's really
[21]
going on with vanguard to understand why
[24]
vanguard is the way they are i first
[26]
need to introduce you to the man who
[28]
founded the company john bogle also
[30]
sometimes referred to as jack bogle he
[33]
founded vanguard in 1975 and his top
[35]
priority from the very beginning was to
[38]
put the investor first jack had been a
[40]
part of the professional investing
[41]
business for many years so he saw
[44]
firsthand how much these money managers
[46]
were ripping off the average person like
[48]
you and me to set some of this up and to
[50]
put it into perspective a little bit
[51]
when jack passed away in 2019 it was
[54]
reported that his net worth was around
[56]
80 million dollars with half of it going
[58]
to charity i know that's a lot of money
[60]
because it is but if you take into
[61]
account the fact that vanguard's assets
[63]
under management at that time was around
[66]
five trillion dollars with a t his net
[68]
worth should have actually been in the
[70]
billions of dollars but there's an
[71]
interesting reason he wasn't that rich
[74]
which we'll cover in just a minute so
[75]
hang tight to get an idea of why
[77]
vanguard is so unique we have to go all
[79]
the way back to 1972 when the first
[82]
index fund was created but it wasn't
[84]
actually created by vanguard in 1975
[87]
jack bogle launched the first vanguard s
[90]
p 500 index fund and even though he
[92]
didn't come up with the idea of index
[94]
funds in general he made them one of the
[96]
most popular investments that we all
[98]
know today it's obvious how successful
[100]
they've become now but back then index
[102]
funds were a very very unpopular idea
[105]
people laughed at him because who in the
[106]
world would want to accept average stock
[109]
market returns every single year
[111]
professional stock brokers and
[112]
individuals were only interested in
[114]
beating the stock market duh but that's
[116]
kind of like today so i guess nothing
[118]
has really changed to beat the market
[120]
you and your professional advisor need
[121]
to be buying and selling stocks on your
[124]
own because you know big egos now
[126]
vanguard does offer actively managed
[128]
funds today but that's mainly because
[130]
they want to give their investors
[131]
options if that's the way that they
[133]
choose to invest so even though the
[134]
company was built on index funds they
[137]
still offer those actively managed funds
[139]
as well if you're enjoying this video so
[140]
far then help support my dog molly by
[142]
hitting that thumbs up button i'll tell
[144]
you what for every thumbs up that i get
[146]
within the first month of this video
[148]
being released i'll take her on a one
[151]
mile hike by the end of the year so 1
[153]
000 likes equals 1 000 miles i might be
[156]
regretting that commitment but oh well
[158]
let's give it a try remember how i said
[160]
that jack gave up billions of dollars in
[162]
net worth the main reason for that is
[164]
because he has never been the sole owner
[166]
of vanguard you know i'm doing fine but
[169]
i don't own vanguard i've never owned a
[170]
share of vanguard
[172]
and but i've been paid a nice salary and
[174]
what decent salary a nice bonus when i
[176]
was running the place
[178]
so i'm not complaining
[180]
but i just don't have and never will
[181]
have the kind of wealth that
[182]
most people in this business have gotten
[184]
because they charge their investors too
[187]
much for what they're worth usually when
[188]
someone starts a business they own all
[190]
or at least the majority of the company
[192]
since that person is taking most of the
[194]
risk they're usually and rightfully
[196]
rewarded if it succeeds but from the
[198]
very beginning jack set up vanguard to
[200]
be owned by the actual investors meaning
[203]
that when you own any shares of a
[205]
vanguard fund you are considered an
[207]
owner and shareholder of the vanguard
[209]
group now here's your fund it's run by
[212]
vanguard and you own vanguard and
[215]
vanguard also runs a whole bunch of
[216]
other funds and we allocate the cost
[219]
among those funds they're now probably
[220]
165 of them so the costs are allocated
[224]
depending on the fund's own cost
[225]
depending on competition depending on
[227]
fairness things like that if you want to
[229]
know where incentives lie within the
[231]
financial industry then all you have to
[233]
do is follow the money and find out who
[235]
actually owns the company for vanguard
[237]
we are the owners of the company so the
[239]
incentives are aligned with our best
[241]
interest in mind and that's because jack
[243]
thought that that was just the right
[244]
thing to do on the other hand fidelity
[246]
for example is a private company owned
[248]
by the founders families employees and
[251]
ex-employees incentives are aligned with
[253]
those three groups of people and not
[255]
someone who uses their funds charles
[257]
schwab is a publicly traded company so
[259]
the incentives lie with individuals who
[261]
own that stock blackrock who offers the
[263]
popular i share etfs is a publicly
[265]
traded company so their shareholders are
[268]
their top priority and not you state
[270]
street who offers the most popular spy
[272]
etf is a publicly traded company so if
[275]
you own their investment funds then
[276]
sorry they're not looking out for you
[278]
and if you want to know what highway
[279]
robbery really looks like then go check
[282]
out the investments that companies like
[283]
t rowe price edward jones and other
[286]
investment firms like that are pushing
[287]
to their investors stand it's gone
[289]
what's all going the money in your
[290]
account it didn't do too well it's god
[292]
the good news is that with vanguard etfs
[294]
you're able to invest in them on any of
[296]
the investment platforms out there so
[298]
even if you prefer the fidelity charles
[300]
schwab or td ameritrade platforms you
[303]
still have access to those vanguard
[304]
investments which means that you can be
[306]
an owner for me i love vanguard
[308]
investments but i'm not a huge fan of
[310]
the vanguard investing platform i
[312]
personally prefer m1 finance because
[314]
it's a lot more user friendly i'll have
[316]
a link to check them out down in the
[317]
description where you can also get a
[319]
free 30 for signing up jack said my
[321]
ideas are simple in investing you get
[324]
what you don't pay for since vanguard
[326]
investors own the actual company the
[328]
benefits of that ownership comes in the
[330]
form of some of the lowest fees in the
[332]
industry other mutual fund companies are
[334]
trying to turn a profit so that the
[335]
owners can benefit vanguard is taking
[338]
that would-be profit and returning it to
[340]
their shareholders in the form of lower
[342]
fees vanguard has 130 mutual funds and
[345]
76 etfs with an average expense ratio of
[348]
.09 percent while the industry has an
[351]
average expense ratio of 0.54 that's a
[354]
cost of 90 cents versus 5 dollars and 40
[357]
cents per 1 000 invested i'll tell you
[359]
what i'll make you a deal if you like to
[361]
pay six times more for something then i
[363]
just drew a picture of this elephant
[364]
that i'm willing to sell you and to top
[366]
it off i'll even turn it into an nft
[369]
that you can eventually take in the
[370]
metaverse if you like i know it looks
[371]
like a dog but there's proof on the
[373]
blockchain that it's an elephant i swear
[375]
not only are vanguard expenses very low
[377]
today they recently came out and said
[379]
how they plan to cut costs on their
[381]
investment funds by 1 billion over the
[384]
next four years it's a race to the
[386]
bottom and vanguard is able to be at the
[388]
forefront since their main goal is to
[390]
return value back to you as their
[392]
shareholder etfs are my personal
[394]
preferred investment vehicle right now
[396]
but vanguard was late to the party with
[398]
offering their first one it wasn't
[399]
because they were sitting on their
[401]
thumbs waiting around though they held
[403]
off on purpose state street launched the
[405]
first etf spy which tracks the s p 500
[408]
in 1993. this head start is one of the
[411]
big reasons that they currently have the
[413]
largest assets under management of 449
[416]
billion dollars while vanguard's total
[418]
stock market etf is sitting in third at
[421]
296 billion in assets under management
[423]
vanguard launched its first exchange
[425]
traded fund in 2001 eight years after
[428]
the first etf started trading the main
[430]
reason for holding off on this
[431]
investment vehicle is because they were
[433]
looked at as a way to trade for the
[435]
short term with etfs you can buy and
[437]
sell them at any point in time when the
[439]
stock market is open just like you can
[440]
in an individual stock on the surface
[442]
this might not seem like a big deal but
[444]
it is when you realize that so many
[446]
investors are more likely to panic sell
[448]
when stocks are down in the short term
[450]
on the other hand with index funds what
[452]
vanguard is known for trading is
[454]
actually done at the end of each day if
[456]
you place a trade for an index fund in
[458]
the middle of the day then the shares
[460]
won't actually be bought or sold until
[462]
the market has closed that day as time
[464]
went on and vanguard realized their
[465]
investors wanted access to this type of
[467]
investment they started creating ones
[469]
that mirrored their index funds this is
[471]
why they offer something like the total
[473]
stock market index fund vtsax and the
[476]
etf version of the total market index
[479]
fund which is vti to be honest with you
[481]
it's a really good thing they eventually
[482]
got into the etf space when they did
[485]
because money flowing into etfs has been
[487]
off the charts over the past few years
[489]
etfs at vanguard accounted for only 24
[492]
of their total assets in 2021 but in
[494]
that same year 92 of their net flows
[497]
went into etfs i'm gonna make a
[499]
prediction here eventually the etf
[501]
business at vanguard is going to be
[503]
equal to or bigger than their mutual
[505]
fund business etfs are just becoming too
[507]
popular so wait for it vanguard was
[509]
hesitant to add etfs early on because
[512]
the company's values stem from their
[514]
founder jack bogle he's a firm believer
[516]
in buying and holding your investments
[518]
to avoid the short-term turmoil that we
[520]
all see in the stock market on a
[522]
day-to-day basis in john's eyes true
[524]
wealth is better created over the long
[526]
term as opposed to a fly-by-night
[528]
strategy that most people are hoping for
[530]
we've all heard the stories about people
[531]
who win the lottery then eventually go
[533]
broke those people never worked for it
[536]
and didn't learn how to slowly manage
[538]
larger and larger amounts of money over
[540]
time there's a ton of lessons to be
[541]
learned along the way of the wealth
[542]
building journey that get easily
[544]
overlooked it's not something that can
[546]
necessarily be taught it has to actually
[548]
be experienced check out this video to
[550]
your left on my top 5 vanguard etfs to
[553]
buy and hold forever make sure to tap
[554]
that thumbs up button and get access to
[556]
the private financial independence
[558]
community down in the description below
[560]

[562]
of like-minded people on the path to
[564]
financial independence i'll see in the
