Why Are the CPA Exams So Hard? (3 Things) - YouTube
Channel: SuperfastCPA
[0]
so why are the CPA exams so difficult
[4]
I'll wait just a minute for you to turn
[6]
on your sound if you haven't yet the CPA
[8]
exams have a fail rate of 50 to 55
[12]
percent and they are widely considered
[14]
to be the most difficult professional
[17]
exam that there is and that includes the
[19]
bar exams for attorneys and the board
[21]
exams for doctors there are three
[23]
specific reasons why passing the CPA
[25]
exams is so difficult why so many people
[29]
fail multiple times and why many
[31]
candidates eventually just give up and
[33]
never actually become a CPA Who am I
[37]
my name is Nate I'm a newly minted CPA
[39]
and I run the website superfast CPA com
[43]
which is geared towards helping busy
[44]
candidates pass as fast as possible now
[48]
the short version of my own CPA story is
[50]
that I spent three months studying the
[52]
normal way only to fail far on my first
[55]
try then I switched to some of my own
[58]
ideas for studying in a completely
[60]
different way and in the next three
[62]
months I passed all four exams this is
[65]
mine ASBO score she is proof you'll see
[67]
that those dates add up to just over
[69]
three months now let's get back to the
[72]
three reasons why the CPA exams are so
[74]
difficult
[74]
the first one is retention learning all
[77]
the concepts and rules alone is
[79]
staggering there are literally hundreds
[81]
of different topics that the exams cover
[83]
and many of them are difficult and
[86]
calculation heavy but not only that you
[88]
have to learn them over several weeks
[90]
and then remember everything that you've
[92]
studied well enough to actually pass an
[94]
exam date this was one of my biggest
[97]
stumbling blocks when I started studying
[98]
and I figured out a way to overcome this
[101]
once I try it out my own methods and
[103]
I'll tell you more about that in a
[104]
minute
[104]
the second challenge are your actual
[107]
study methods what do you actually do
[110]
when you sit down to study every day is
[111]
it effective do you have a specific plan
[115]
you follow and are you making progress
[117]
when I talk to other CPA candidates
[119]
about how they study they all tell me
[121]
the same thing you know I start out
[123]
watching the video lecture a kind of
[125]
zone out then I try to read the chapter
[128]
or skim the chapter then I try out a few
[131]
and I can't really get any I don't know
[133]
what it's talking about so I go back to
[135]
the video lecture you know and then it's
[137]
an hour through your study session and
[139]
you kind of give up for the day and then
[142]
the next day the very same thing happens
[145]
again
[145]
so I hear that over and over and over
[147]
and I know that's how it is because
[148]
that's exactly how my first three months
[150]
were so this was another huge struggle
[154]
for me everyday I would jump around to
[156]
different resources in my review course
[158]
and as time went on I just felt more and
[160]
more overwhelmed when I sat for far that
[162]
first time and saw the exam in person a
[165]
few things jumped out of me and I know
[167]
exactly how to study from that point on
[170]
and after trying out my own ideas for
[172]
studying I literally studied less each
[175]
day I had a clear plan for every single
[178]
study session and I knew that I was
[180]
making progress each day and so the
[182]
study process itself was a lot easier to
[185]
deal with mentally because of that the
[188]
third challenge is just literally not
[190]
having enough time in the day so most
[193]
CPA candidates work full time usually in
[196]
the very demanding field of public
[198]
accounting and there's people in your
[200]
life that want to see you after work
[202]
like family and friends and so fitting
[205]
in three to four hours a day of CPA
[207]
study is literally not possible for most
[209]
people and on the other hand that's
[212]
about how much you need to study to pass
[215]
the exams in within the timeframe so how
[219]
does that work you literally don't have
[220]
that much time but that is how much time
[222]
it takes to study I kind of come up with
[226]
a solution for that but back to my story
[229]
for a minute to illustrate this the
[231]
three months where I studied for far and
[234]
failed that first time I had all day
[236]
every day it was the summer before I
[238]
started my job in public accounting and
[240]
I started my job a week before I sat for
[243]
far that first time so then I had
[245]
started my job in the three months
[247]
afterwards when I ended up passing all
[249]
four sections I was working full-time so
[253]
I was able to study and pass all four
[255]
sections with much less daily study time
[259]
than the first time around so so
[261]
obviously I had made dramatic
[263]
in the effectiveness and the efficiency
[265]
of my study methods now I can't give you
[269]
all my best advice on how I did all that
[271]
in this short video but what I have done
[274]
is I put together a free online training
[276]
class where I will take longer and walk
[279]
you through my best tips about these
[282]
changes I made that made such a big
[284]
difference in helping me pass all four
[287]
sections in just a few months while
[289]
working full-time so this training class
[292]
is completely free to attend and I
[295]
