Mainstream Media鈥檚 Dirty Lie About Student Loan Debt Relief - YouTube
Channel: The Young Turks
[0]
and i know there's a lot of people who
[1]
think we should relieve student debt you
[3]
relieve student debt and in a very again
[5]
perverse way it might actually create
[8]
more inflation so
[10]
all of this becomes so super complicated
[13]
austin i was going to ask you about
[14]
student debt andrew brought it up
[16]
i mean
[18]
as fiscal policy this seems like the
[20]
wrong time to do it now that of course
[22]
is andrew rosorkin and chuck todd chuck
[25]
todd who
[26]
he's supposed to be basically like a
[28]
straight news person he doesn't opine on
[30]
stuff
[31]
and there he's making clear no he
[33]
doesn't want student loan debt to be
[35]
cancelled but it's the least surprising
[37]
thing in the world none of the people
[38]
who's ever going to appear on that show
[40]
is going to think that it's ever time
[42]
for the government to do something that
[44]
helps regular people how could it be
[46]
it's time it's any time that's how it's
[49]
always never the time when the
[51]
government would actually help you out
[53]
if you know if it's tough times if we're
[55]
in a recession caused by a public health
[57]
crisis well then it's certainly not time
[59]
if we finally get past it well now we're
[60]
trying to you know redevelop our economy
[62]
and everything is it really time to put
[63]
the brakes on then it's never time
[66]
but i know we obviously think that there
[69]
is a time right now where maybe pressure
[71]
can work with joe biden he's indicated
[74]
that he is considering in the next few
[75]
weeks announcing some sort of student
[76]
loan debt cancellation now of course
[78]
that was before the scotus decision
[80]
people's eyes might have been taken off
[82]
the prize maybe they will use that to
[84]
weasel out of the uh the the promises
[86]
that he's made but i want to talk about
[88]
what this might look like i know jank
[90]
you were asking how much would it cost
[92]
to cancel certain levels of student loan
[94]
debt so it depends on do you ask but
[96]
generally i've looked up multiple
[98]
different sources saying that to cancel
[100]
ten thousand dollars in federal student
[101]
loan debt for each borrower would cost
[104]
somewhere between 320 and 380 billion
[107]
dollars and that by the way would
[109]
eliminate the entire student loan debt
[112]
for about uh one out of three uh people
[115]
who have debt now if you were to raise
[117]
that up to fifty thousand dollars for
[119]
every single person then that would cost
[121]
about nine hundred billion dollars and
[123]
it would take away about eighty percent
[125]
of everyone's student loan debt so you
[128]
got about 320 billion on the low end 900
[131]
billion on the high end that's sort of
[133]
the figures that we're talking about you
[134]
know i just there's a reason why i asked
[136]
for that because
[138]
mainstream media always quotes the
[139]
number not of 320 and 389 they always
[142]
quote 1.75 trillion
[145]
but wait is that the proposal that's to
[147]
get rid of all student debt in the
[148]
country period right
[151]
the proposal that biden is considering
[154]
is getting rid of 10 000 only 10 000 of
[156]
student debt and only for some people
[158]
which would be less than 320 million
[161]
because it would eliminate a bunch of
[162]
people okay
[164]
but mainstream media doesn't want you to
[166]
do it because that well that might hurt
[169]
bankers or other rich friends of theirs
[172]
so
[173]
instead of saying 300
[175]
billion they say 1.75 trillion
[178]
but wait nobody's considering that
[180]
proposal so biden very clearly said i am
[183]
definitely not considering that proposal
[185]
forget at all he said i'm not even
[186]
considering the 50 000 number no way so
[189]
why are you giving the much higher
[191]
number it is factually incorrect why
[195]
because they want to trick you into not
[196]
doing student debt now
[199]
on the other hand
[200]
we just passed tons and tons of aid to
[203]
ukraine
[204]
i think they should get that aid i'm
[206]
happy that they're getting it but
[208]
billions tens of billions of dollars
[210]
nobody blinked deny i this
[212]
andrew ross sorkin didn't go on tv going
[214]
well i mean with inflation should we
[216]
really be sending all this money to you
[218]
great
[219]
chuck todd the neutral
[221]
objective reporter on msnbc didn't come
[224]
out and say i mean is this the time for
[226]
aid to ukraine i mean is this the time
[229]
no because that's all going to defense
[230]
contractors so they high five behind the
[233]
scenes they're like it honestly the
[235]
group think is so thick that before they
[238]
brainwash you they brainwash themselves
[240]
to them it never occurs to them to
[242]
question how we're going to pay for
[244]
defense contractors
[247]
yeah do they have defense contractor
[249]
lobbyists on their air all the time yes
[250]
do they ever identify them as such no
[252]
they identify him as former general
[254]
former colonel blah blah blah right and
[257]
uh do do they
[259]
uh
[260]
have advertisers often that are defense
[262]
contractors yes
[263]
would they want to insult them and lose
[265]
millions of dollars no
[266]
okay but no they if you listen to them
[269]
oh that's outrageous no way no you have
[271]
to do the defense okay well how about
[273]
just giveaways to corporations just
[275]
yesterday on the show we talked about
[277]
how they're considered giving 50 billion
[279]
dollars
[281]
to tech companies
[282]
that are the richest companies in the
[283]
world including amazon
[285]
50 billion dollars
[287]
never ask the mainstream media how are
[289]
you going to pay for that
[290]
nobody came out why is this the right
[292]
time with inflation to needlessly take
[294]
50 billion in cash and hand it to
[296]
corporations who don't need it at all
[299]
with no checks on it why are you doing
[301]
it how well for research and development
[302]
is it specifically for research and
[304]
development no can they just use it to
[306]
buy back their own stock and literally
[308]
build matches with it yes
[310]
because bernie actually tried to put a
[312]
provision saying they can't do stock
[313]
buybacks they have to actually use it
[314]
for the purpose we're claiming
[316]
and they said no bernie they can use it
[318]
for whatever no we're just lying about
[320]
that bernie stop annoying us this is
[322]
just a
[323]
unbelievable gargantuan giveaway to the
[326]
rich by the way that's not all they're
[328]
considering a 125 billion dollar
[331]
giveaway
[332]
in general to corporations
[334]
and chuck todd has never said
[337]
this doesn't look like the time to give
[339]
away hundreds of billions of dollars to
[341]
corporations student debt relief that's
[343]
actually human beings
[346]
no way get out of here that's not the
[348]
moderate position that would help
[350]
americans no we don't want that the
[352]
moderate position to help corporations
[354]
and only corporations they did that same
[357]
trick with medicare for all too we went
[359]
through a an entire pandemic we're still
[361]
dealing with covid19 and
[364]
millions of americans still don't have
[366]
health care and they did the same trick
[369]
during 2016 with the bernie sanders
[371]
campaign talking about how medicare for
[373]
all was going to cost some some crazy
[374]
number like 40 trillion dollars they
[376]
don't talk about how it's actually over
[378]
10 years
[379]
and i forget the exact number of that
[381]
now
[382]
but they use those gigantic numbers to
[385]
scare people and at the same time when
[388]
you look at the defense budget
[390]
those are even bigger numbers and it's
[392]
constantly approved with a rubber stamp
[394]
with no thought outs that well of course
[396]
we have to give weapons to uh other
[398]
countries now i'm not saying we
[400]
shouldn't give weapons to ukraine they
[401]
obviously do need them but we never seem
[403]
to think about
[404]
you know
[406]
actually doing stuff for average people
[408]
too
[410]
and there's never any consideration of
[412]
doing that
[414]
nobody thinks about it and it's just
[416]
automatically we're just going to shovel
[418]
money at defense contractors at big
[420]
corporations
[421]
and but whenever it comes to people oh
[424]
is it really time is it time for health
[426]
care is it time for student loan uh debt
[428]
relief which by the way 10 000 drop in
[432]
the bucket it goes down to biden saying
[434]
nothing will fundamentally change
[435]
because when you look uh at the banks
[438]
you said that earlier today or early in
[440]
the segment
[441]
well the banks uh make a lot of money
[443]
off student loan asset-backed securities
[445]
and if he does something about student
[447]
loan debt if he actually cancels the
[448]
entire thing that's going to really
[450]
affect the markets and he doesn't like
[452]
that okay i got to say more about that
[455]
isn't this funny guys again you could
[457]
double check everything we're talking
[458]
about we're not right-wing media telling
[460]
you oh you got to tan your testicles in
[462]
order to kirk over covert or whatever
[463]
the health packer carlson says and we're
[465]
and so mainstream media loves
[467]
right-wingers left-wingers they're all
[469]
the same
[470]
remember everybody corporations are the
[471]
only correct answer okay but no i want
[475]
you to double check us i want you to
[476]
double check the facts so when it came
[478]
to buildback better that had paid family
[480]
leave lower drug prices etc they caused
[483]
they said 1.7 trillion dollars what a
[485]
giant price tag 1.7 trillion okay when
[489]
it comes to the defense budget well
[490]
that's about 800 billion but that's just
[493]
for one year the 1.7 trillions for 10
[495]
years so if you did the same
[498]
unit of time for the defense budget
[500]
it wouldn't be 1.7 trillion like build
[503]
back better it would be
[504]
8 trillion
[506]
eight trillion
[508]
and never ever questioned in mainstream
[512]
media everybody just assumes obviously
[514]
you have to do that do you have to do
[515]
the entire 8 trillion
[517]
is it possible to defend america with a
[520]
little under 8 trillion and maybe take
[523]
for example 1.7 trillion of that and
[525]
give us health care and give us child
[527]
care and give us paid family leave and
[530]
by the way there was a million
[531]
provisions that the american people
[533]
loved in that bill that is and and when
[536]
was biden the most popular he was the
[537]
most popular after he passed covert
[540]
relief bill okay because that actually
[542]
had progressive positions in it they
[544]
were small and they were temporary but
[546]
it at least had progressive positions in
[548]
it he was sky high he has done nothing
[551]
since then he's lost 25 points the
[553]
bottom has fallen out and they're like
[555]
that's why you shouldn't do progressive
[556]
positions
[558]
and they all say they all say it in
[559]
unison so guys isn't it amazing isn't it
[563]
interesting i'm asking you if you're a
[564]
moderate moderate democrat moderate
[566]
republican etc what they call a monitor
[569]
isn't it interesting they want to
[571]
student debt relief and you can see it
[572]
not only in the stories that we already
[574]
covered you'll be able to see it in the
[576]
future when you turn on sienna and msnbc
[578]
and fox news what's the conventional
[580]
wisdom they never agree right i mean fox
[582]
is over here msnbc is over here that's
[584]
the they are msnbc way left fox is right
[587]
it said
[588]
no they all agree on this you shouldn't
[591]
have student debt relief we've already
[592]
done two or three segments of boxing's
[594]
going ah student debt you know that's
[596]
terrible okay janine pirro saying oh you
[599]
should pay your debts your bums she owes
[601]
six hundred thousand dollars for a
[602]
former campaign okay
[604]
and and now huh msnbc agrees with fox
[608]
news
[610]
oh they're all
[611]
multi-billion dollar corporations
[614]
and they believe in giveaways for
[615]
corporations but nothing for the actual
[618]
americans what do they disagree on
[621]
should you tan your testicles or not who
[623]
cares
[624]
who should 13 people in the country
[628]
that are on girls tracks teams be on
[630]
boys tracks teams we have a country with
[632]
330 million people we're talking about
[634]
that oh big disagreement big
[637]
disagreement everybody get distracted
[639]
have you taken all the money out yet
[640]
chuck go keep it going keep it going i'm
[642]
distracting all of them with squirrels
[644]
oh dr seuss books that's so important
[647]
defense give him all the money give all
[648]
the money to the contractors give all
[650]
the money to the drug companies okay oh
[652]
look at this uh the critical race theory
[654]
well we disagree so much student debt
[657]
relief it's a wall of conservative
[660]
corporate propaganda
[661]
no no to the american people no to the
[664]
is this the time this is not the time
[666]
hey we all agree right you say this is
[667]
not the time you say this is not the
[669]
time and i say this is not the time
[671]
well when are you gonna have a
[672]
progressive on saying it is the time
[674]
when are you going to have a progressive
[675]
on that actually says the facts isn't it
[677]
interesting that the right wing is all
[678]
over television
[680]
corporate uh democrats and republicans
[682]
are all over television the one people
[684]
not allowed on are the one people who
[686]
have the truth the set of people who
[688]
would tell you wait but chuck and andrew
[690]
and all of you every goon on here you're
[692]
you're not telling the truth look at the
[694]
two different programs yeah ah
[697]
conveniently they're not allowed on
[699]
television so nobody ever finds it there
[701]
was a brief window where one show was
[703]
letting some progressives on
[704]
unfortunately it was chris cuomo so
[707]
that's right and and by the way rick
[710]
sanchez on cnn did a segment on money in
[712]
politics and we didn't covered it we're
[714]
like whoa okay give cnn credit that was
[717]
a real segment where he pointed out the
[718]
donors he was fired within two or three
[721]
weeks they say ostensibly for a
[722]
different reason okay cuomo's and you
[725]
know to be fair to msnbc they also had
[727]
some fire breathers talking about how
[728]
wall street is extracting money from the
[731]
system and not actually doing anything
[733]
and you should watch out for that dylan
[734]
radigan mm-hmm he's ed schultz
[737]
me
[738]
wait none of us are on anymore that's
[739]
weird to be fair i i i only mentioned
[741]
chris chrome i don't think there's a
[743]
conspiracy that took him down i think he
[744]
did that stuff yeah yeah cuomo is a
[745]
different situation right it's not
[747]
there's guys we live in the real world
[749]
okay cuomo clearly had issues right
[753]
um
[754]
so but ed schultz didn't have those
[755]
issues phil donahue didn't have those
[757]
issues that's an old-school msnbc host
[759]
that was taking over actually banfield
[761]
didn't have those issues radigan didn't
[762]
have them yet anyone who mentions an
[765]
honest assessment of how corporations
[768]
are bilking you
[770]
all of a sudden they're not on air
[772]
anymore
[773]
it's there's a progressive blockade
[775]
because
[776]
in reality all of mainstream media is
[780]
working for corporations they are
[782]
corporations they're all gigantic
[785]
corporations
[786]
that hire mouthpieces but instead of
[788]
putting them in their pr department they
[791]
put them on air as reporters and anchors
[795]
it's not an accident that they're
[797]
tricking you they're trying to trick you
[799]
