How to Collect Social Security if You Didn't Work Enough - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[0]
everybody thinks that you automatically
[2]
get social security and medicare when
[3]
you reach a certain age i don't really
[4]
know
[6]
any of the details but that's pretty
[8]
common knowledge that you're going to
[9]
get it well it's not true
[11]
in order to get social security and
[13]
medicare
[14]
you have to work and pay those
[17]
those taxes your fica for a certain
[20]
amount of time
[21]
to qualify
[22]
[Music]
[24]
[Applause]
[27]
so if i was a stay-at-home mom i was a
[29]
homemaker my entire life
[31]
and i never paid social security taxes i
[33]
never worked
[35]
i wouldn't qualify but the government's
[38]
got me
[38]
they're gonna say well you have a
[40]
qualifying spouse
[42]
but you have to be married at least 10
[43]
years so if i was married at least 10
[45]
years
[46]
the fact that i never worked paid social
[48]
security taxes
[50]
i will qualify for medicare because i
[53]
was married to him for 10 years
[54]
he worked and he paid the fica even if
[57]
we get divorced
[58]
and even he if he's remarried my
[61]
medicare is good even if i remarry
[63]
my medicare is good i'm gonna get
[64]
medicare i'm gonna be eligible for
[65]
medicare
[66]
at 65. now let's say
[70]
he didn't work a full 10 years
[73]
now we got a problem because now
[75]
medicare part a
[76]
is not free at 65 it's not premium free
[80]
because i didn't pay in
[82]
and my spouse didn't pay in so i can pay
[85]
for medicare part a
[87]
but it's pricey so the way
[90]
social security and medicare do it they
[92]
break it down into quarters and you have
[93]
to have 40 quarters and it's
[95]
that you don't want to know exactly how
[97]
the sausage is made you have google you
[98]
can google all that
[100]
i'm just trying to make it simple okay
[104]
medicare for dummies so you gotta have
[106]
40 quarters well let's say you only have
[108]
39 quarters
[111]
you don't get premium free medicare part
[114]
a you got to pay for it
[116]
and you will have to pay it's under 300
[119]
it's like 257 dollars something like
[121]
that that's in 2021 so
[123]
clearly that goes up every year
[125]
depending on what year you're watching
[126]
this so you're going to have to pay that
[127]
for part a
[129]
then you got to pay for your part b
[131]
which is going to be at least 150
[133]
and then you're going to buy your
[134]
supplemental insurance and your drug
[135]
coverage so we're talking a big
[137]
amount of money spent on health care
[139]
right now so it would be ideal
[141]
if you get your medicare part a premium
[145]
free and you can do that if your one
[146]
quarter short go work
[147]
go back to work work for that quarter
[149]
we'll tell you how or the google will
[151]
tell you how
[152]
so that you can get that medicare part a
[154]
for free now that's if you were just one
[155]
quarter short
[156]
let's say you were more than 30 quarter
[160]
short you
[160]
you instead of you're one third short
[165]
now you got to pay the full price for
[166]
medicare part a and
[168]
in 2021 that's like 421 dollars
[174]
okay you can tell by my reticence here
[176]
that i'm not 100 sure on the exact
[177]
amount the exact amount doesn't count
[179]
you get my idea it's expensive okay
[182]
so if you were close you had 30 to 39
[185]
quarters you're only going to pay 250
[187]
and if you didn't come close you're
[188]
going to pay 420 basically you're going
[190]
to pay about double
[192]
and that also comes into play when we
[194]
have
[195]
people that move here that didn't
[196]
haven't paid in they've worked elsewhere
[198]
and they need to buy premium
[200]
medicare part a a lot of times we have
[203]
doctors and lawyers and high
[204]
professionals that
[205]
immigrate here and they're able to pay
[207]
that most of my clients
[208]
that paying for medicare part is very
[210]
expensive let's talk
[212]
about social security so social security
[216]
you have to work your 40 years your 40
[218]
quarters or 10 years
[220]
to get your social security benefit and
[222]
they base how much money you get
[225]
off your highest 35 years of earnings
[228]
you want to know what your earnings look
[229]
like you want to know what your pool of
[231]
money looks like that you've accrued to
[232]
date
[233]
make a free account at ssa.gov
[236]
ah it takes like 10 minutes you're going
[237]
to want to copy the front in the back of
[239]
your
[239]
driver's license and secret passwords
[241]
and all that stuff
[242]
but then that will tell you if you died
[244]
today what would your spouse get
[246]
if you became disabled today what would
[248]
you get what would your minor kids get
[250]
what would your spouse get if if you
[253]
uh retired today how much retirement
[255]
could you get
[256]
if you waited a year how much more would
[258]
it grow if you waited two years three
[259]
years four years
[261]
so that's your money it's your
[264]
information go claim it go to
[265]
socialsecurity.gov
[267]
and go figure out what you've already
[269]
done so far
[270]
now if you haven't worked enough to
[273]
qualify for social security retirement
[275]
on your own
[276]
just like we talked about medicare you
[277]
can be married to someone
[279]
so if i was married to my spouse again
[281]
it's the same time
[282]
at least 10 years and my spouse
[286]
qualifies for social security retirement
[288]
because he paid in
[290]
the fact that i never worked that i
[292]
never paid any social security taxes
[294]
i can still qualify and get my medicare
[297]
based off that marriage based off him as
[298]
the worker
[299]
and i can also get social security
[301]
retirement based off him as a worker
[303]
regardless if he's remarried if he's
[305]
married and divorced several times
[308]
i'm still going to qualify based off the
[310]
marriage
[311]
being the qualifying event because i was
[313]
married to him at least 10 years
[314]
and i can get social security spousal
[316]
benefits now there's more to it what age
[318]
i draw
[319]
and how much i get based on drawing
[320]
early and if i'm able to marry yet
[322]
and all that stuff but the key factor is
[326]
for those people that didn't earn enough
[328]
credits they can draw off their other
[331]
their better half their spouse they were
[333]
legally married
[335]
at least 10 years if you're you're not
[337]
legally married if you're just
[339]
partnered up watch my video on common
[341]
law marriage
[342]
that'll answer some of your questions
[344]
thank you for watching me
[346]
