Channel: As/Is

- I'm wearing men's deodorant.
[2]
- What, you are?
[2]
- Yeah, do I smell manly?
[3]
- Oh, you do.
[4]
- Yeah?
[5]
- You smell delectable.
[6]
Do you wanna smell me?
[7]
- No.
[8]
(rock music)
[11]
- Women's body care and bath products
[13]
can be expensive as hell.
[15]
- And a lot of the time, it's more expensive than guy stuff.
[17]
- It is all a marketing ploy, or
[19]
is the stuff we use actually better?
[21]
- It's Ladylike, and today we're taking on the pink tax.
[24]
- The pink tax is what we call the extra money
[27]
that it costs to buy women-marketed products.
[31]
- Especially with razors and with body wash.
[34]
- I think that women have more options,
[36]
of course some will be more expensive,
[38]
but I think that guy stuff is not as fun, or exciting.
[42]
(upbeat music)
[45]
- I will pay a little bit more
[46]
just to know that my hair's moisturized
[48]
and that my curls are being taken well care of.
[51]
Basically, I'll pay any amount of
[53]
money for a good hair product.
[55]
(upbeat music)
[57]
- Marketing companies kind of play off of that
[59]
and feel like they can get away with more expensive things
[63]
because women consume it more.
[65]
(upbeat music)
[68]
- I think guys' products are, there's less frills to them,
[71]
so it's easy to find cheap versions.
[73]
I'm very susceptible to a good deal.
[75]
(upbeat music)
[81]
(cash register)
[87]
- Going to Target.
[88]
- Target.
[90]
- Target.
[91]
- Where's the man section?
[92]
- How do you know it's for men?
[93]
- It'll say "rugged".
[95]
- It's probably gonna be the tiniest
[96]
man's section, it's all women.
[99]
- I feel like we need to get two-in-one, three in one.
[101]
- [Jen] Look at this.
[102]
- [Freddie] Whoa.
[103]
- Is this for men, though?
[104]
- This looks, oh it's kids', it's for children.
[106]
- Now do they have a men's ethnic section,
[108]
or do women only have the ethnic section?
[110]
Clean-cut look, classic pomade.
[113]
I could use this for my edges.
[114]
- Why do boys always want two in one, why don't, what?
[117]
- This one is with caffeine and menthol, we might need that.
[121]
- I don't know, I guess I just
[122]
don't wanna smell like an asshole.
[123]
- Axe Apollo, Axe Phoenix.
[125]
- What option do I have?
[126]
- This is the face wash I use.
[129]
- There's no organic stuff.
[130]
- No organic stuff for guys.
[131]
- We bought everything.
[132]
- Wait, we lost Freddie.
[133]
- Freddie?
[134]
Well, Freddie's dead and this video
[136]
is taking a very different turn.
[137]
- [Safiya] We found Freddie.
[138]
- Hi, I had to go get a birthday card.
[140]
- Freddie, we all need things from Target, okay?
[143]
(rock music)
[151]
(cash register)
[154]
(cash register)
[157]
- So, just traded in all of my
[159]
girly shit for all the manly shit.
[162]
- [Voiceover] Also, can we talk about how this says
[163]
"Volcano-powered sweat destroyer with Palm Tree scent"?
[169]
- Okay, so I have the shampoo in my hair
[172]
and the first thing I notice is that it smells so strong.
[176]
- Okay, so I just went to yoga,
[177]
this men's deodorant is doing the trick.
[180]
- This is what happens when you have thick hair
[182]
and you use two-in-one shampoo.
[185]
- So I just used the Axe shampoo two-in-one.
[188]
It doesn't feel super moisturized.
[190]
- I shaved my legs, probably 24 hours ago.
[193]
They feel pretty darned smooth.
[195]
- I will say that my hair looks crazy, but it feels soft.
[198]
- Pretty into the body wash, it felt
[201]
really good in the shower, it smelled pretty nice,
[204]
it's a little strong for my taste.
[206]
- I smell so good right now, so
[209]
maybe men's deodorant is for me.
[212]
- [Voiceover] Look at that, look at that man moisturizer.
[215]
It's behaving like regular moisturizer.
[217]
- And the breakouts have begun, pimplies popping up.
[221]
- Do I smell kinda like a man?
[225]
- No, you smell nice.
[226]
- Oh, okay.
[227]
- Why doesn't it smell good?
[228]
- It's not your usual musk.
[230]
- [Safiya] Alright, so I'm at Whole Foods
[232]
and this is pretty much all of the selection
[235]
that are just marketed for men.
[238]
So I found some three-in-one natural man,
[241]
so I think I'm gonna pick that up and see how that fares.
[243]
- So today is the last day of men's products.
[247]
- I really miss my normal products.
[249]
- It's been a journey.
[251]
- So I used men's personal care products for one week.
[254]
- I think I winked at more people this week
[256]
because I was like, I'm just sort of a dude.
[259]
- The first morning I woke up and I was like,
[261]
"There's a man in my bed...nope, that's me."
[264]
- I had the most feelings about the deodorant.
[266]
This deodorant is not antiperspirant and I'm mad about it.
[269]
- This deodorant did things for me.
[272]
Normally at this point in the day,
[273]
I smell like BO on a stick, it smells great,
[276]
it definitely smells like a dude, I like that smell.
[278]
- It wasn't that much of an adjustment.
[280]
I actually kind of like the new smell.
[283]
I kinda smelled like a metal pole.
[285]
- I did shave my legs the first day and it was so nice.
[289]
But the two-in-one shampoo was horrific.
[292]
- My hair didn't look terrible
[293]
after I used it, but it was dry.
[296]
- The body slash face wash two-in-one thing
[298]
broke me out horribly, but I will say
[301]
the natural body and face wash
[303]
that I got from Whole Foods did work for my body and face.
[306]
- My boyfriend Paul uses the men's shampoo
[308]
but he uses my Shea moisture shampoo
[310]
because again, there really aren't that
[312]
many options for ethnic hair for men.
[315]
- I would definitely buy men's versions of
[318]
deodorant and razors for sure.
[321]
- I like consistency, so I'm probably not gonna switch
[324]
to these products, but they worked fine.
[326]
- Most of these products are pretty much the same.
[328]
- It's more the selection and personal
[331]
preference that comes into play.
[333]
- I could tell a difference, I just honestly,
[336]
I wanna go home and wash my hair with expensive things.
[339]
- What body wash do you use, babe?
[341]
- Uh, Axe.
[343]
- How long have you used it?
[345]
- Since I was 14.
