[8]
skateboards have always been cool but
[10]
when someone decided to put a motor in
[12]
them they became even cooler hazards
[15]
aside of course and with this latest
[16]
trend of micro mobility and last mile
[19]
vehicles it might come as a surprise
[20]
that the first motorized skateboards
[23]
exist since the early seventies but in
[25]
recent years Millennials have taken to
[27]
Electric skateboards and scooters to
[29]
move about and upload tic TOCs while
[31]
doing so and this is largely due to one
[33]
company boosted yes other motorized
[36]
boards existed before but boosted
[38]
elevated the game they took an old idea
[40]
made it slick 3d and high quality the
[43]
control system was easy to use and as a
[45]
company they sought to form strong bonds
[47]
with their customers but in march 2020
[50]
who's that laid off many of its
[51]
employees and sought a buyer so it begs
[54]
to wonder if this company had successful
[56]
products with millions in investment a
[58]
cult-like following and even the
[59]
endorsement of one of YouTube's biggest
[61]
stars why did it fail sure there was the
[64]
china-us trade worthy but was that all
[67]
of it not quite this is company
[69]
forensics boosted
[83]
Stanford engineers students sanjay
[86]
Dastur John almond and Matthew Trent
[88]
came up with the boosted brand of
[90]
Electric skateboards in 2012 though they
[92]
had toyed with the idea for years they
[94]
wanted an electric skateboard that was
[96]
portable lightweight and easy to use and
[99]
their idea was so well conceived that it
[102]
was backed by Stanford's own startx
[104]
accelerator program and then went to a
[106]
very successful Kickstarter campaign
[107]
with a goal of $100,000 in just 24 hours
[110]
they reached the goal and ended up with
[112]
over 460 thousand dollars in pledged
[114]
money not only that but they also
[116]
graduated from the Y Combinator program
[118]
a hotbed for innovative products and a
[120]
source of a lot of our forensics videos
[122]
anyways having succeeded in getting
[124]
investors boosted launched at its first
[126]
products the single the dual and the
[128]
dual plus boards in 2014 the models had
[130]
one or two motors and varied in range
[133]
power and of course price part of their
[135]
almost immediate success was their
[137]
outstanding quality and attention to
[139]
detail
[139]
ready users consider them the apple of a
[142]
boards vestments that's compared to
[144]
other brands boosted boards weren't
[145]
cheap as models went from $1000 and
[148]
above still people bought them and the
[151]
company was working hard on its second
[152]
generation of a boards which had more
[154]
power improved aesthetics and more sizes
[157]
once again boosted boards garnered a
[159]
cult-like status writing groups reddit
[161]
threads YouTube channels you name it
[163]
boosted was there and right around this
[165]
moment they got a 10 million dollar
[167]
investment so the ship was sailing in
[169]
the right direction but a lot of it is
[170]
also due to one youtuber you might have
[172]
heard about Casey nice dad he used a
[174]
boosted board in many of his videos and
[175]
this got people hooked but let's talk
[178]
about one particular video which
[179]
involved Aladdin that's right Casey
[182]
produced and directed a video called
[183]
Aladdin magic carpet prank and it was a
[186]
hit the numbers at the time well upwards
[188]
of 17 million views right now that video
[191]
stands at 28 million views Aladdin
[193]
chilled on his board and cruised around
[195]
New York City and bystanders stood in
[197]
wonder what was he writing it's so easy
[199]
to write the video certainly got people
[201]
interested marketing agency overdrive
[203]
makes a very compelling case for the
[205]
impact this video
[207]
on boosted but it was also a
[209]
double-edged sword because what would
[211]
happen if it's suddenly nice that didn't
[213]
promote his boost at board and even with
[215]
all of this going for them some bumps
[218]
appeared on the road is that smoke in
[220]
early 2016
[222]
Rick bras not Rick Ross Rick bras and
[225]
avid boost that user reported that his
[227]
board emanated some sort of smoke in
[230]
fact the conversation with his roommate
[231]
is quite funny your board thing is
[233]
smoking the first thing that bras told
[236]
his room it was videotaping because you
[238]
know viral videos he then rushed to his
[240]
house only to find the board's battery
[242]
overheating on the verge of exploding
[244]
his apartment was filled with a heavy
[246]
chemical smell so he put on a gas mask
[248]
he bought as a joke shirt that's why you
[250]
have a gas mask he then posted the
[252]
entire situation on a reddit thread and
[254]
guess what boosted contacted him
[256]
immediately offered spares and asked to
[258]
get the damaged parts back but it didn't
[261]
stop there
[261]
boost its CEO Sanjay dostler flew from
[264]
California to New York to meet up with
[266]
bras and analyze the damaged board and
[268]
it wasn't a one-time thing as another
[270]
user reported a smoking battery boosted
[272]
was forced to issue a recall and told
[274]
its users to stop using the boards all
[276]
together and to disconnect the batteries
[278]
doused or recognized that the problem
[280]
stemmed from their own quality control
[282]
standard which meant stopping production
[284]
in November and December the peak of
[286]
consumption though they had hoped to
[288]
restart production in January 2017
[290]
boosted took a big blow to their sales
[292]
and times didn't really improve for
[295]
dastoor he had always wanted to see
[296]
boosted grow past electric boards but
[299]
his efforts weren't yielding results so
[300]
in mid 2017 has stepped down a CEO and
[303]
another Stanford graduate came in Jeff
[305]
rusik off a new era
[307]
Bruce ACOG looked to grow boost that and
[309]
as soon as he arrived injected resources
[312]
into the company he practically doubled
[314]
the work first around a hundred sixty
[315]
employees moved to a new office and
[317]
worked hard to launch the third
[318]
generation of boosted boards those who
[320]
worked hard to increase employee health
[322]
benefits he told the meeting of the
[324]
company had grown four hundred and fifty
[325]
percent in 2017 and planned to keep
[328]
growing with cheaper and smaller boards
[330]
like the boosted meeting these new
[331]
products had a price of $750 compared to
[334]
pricier larger boards and yes Rosica was
[337]
also adamant in expanding from only
[339]
words into other products like scooters
[341]
but even with apparently such a strong
[343]
year in 2017 and new products boost it
[346]
needed money so 2018 was also a year of
[348]
raising capital part of the capital
[350]
would be funneled towards launching the
[351]
rev a $1600 scooter and finally breakout
[355]
from the skateboard market the rev was
[357]
different from most electric scooters in
[359]
the sense that its build quality was
[361]
above average steel frames not a hint of
[363]
plastic big wheels and a solid braking
[366]
system if meant the Rev was serious
[368]
business but so was its price and a
[370]
weight of 46 pounds the idea was good
[372]
enough for investors who dished out 60
[375]
million dollars to the company but even
[376]
with the new product about to come out
[378]
hefty investment and interest from the
[380]
public Rosa Cowden stand still he aimed
[383]
to grow and by 2018 the company had
[385]
vendors in 34 countries trade war
[387]
competition and cost the promising new
[390]
scooter Rev was to be entirely produced
[392]
in China in fact all of boosted's
[394]
products were manufactured in China it
[396]
seemed that boosted would be directly
[398]
affected even if Bruce account assured
[399]
everyone otherwise he told the verge
[401]
boost that could eat the tariffs
[403]
implemented during the trade war but as
[405]
soon as the trade word started to heat
[407]
up boost it applied and was granted
[408]
exclusion on the products the US
[410]
government wasn't paying retributions
[412]
immediately in fact they were taking a
[414]
lot of time so boosted wouldn't see
[416]
these benefits in the short run then
[418]
word got out that boosted wasn't paying
[420]
its vendors on time turns out that Rev
[422]
the Savior scooter had been delayed and
[424]
some vendors were owed up to $100,000
[427]
plus it's not like they weren't other
[428]
scooters in the market competition from
[430]
Asia mitts cheaper options were
[432]
available which weren't all that bad
[434]
so in reality boosted was stalling in a
[437]
very fast-moving market cost cots and
[440]
downfall by this time Goosen was a big
[442]
company most of its around 150 employees
[444]
were engineers commanding good salaries
[447]
and this meant a hefty chunk of change
[449]
just on payroll and yes their products
[452]
were great but micro mobility is still a
[454]
niche market with stiff competition
[456]
reverse engineered products coming from
[458]
China ironically filled the market and
[460]
some cost half as much so in order to
[462]
stay alive in late 2019 and early 2020
[466]
the company started shedding cost they
[468]
reduced employee benefits such as
[469]
providing lunch they instead cordially
[471]
asked the employees to bring their
[472]
lunch to work and this might seem like a
[474]
small change but it was an indicator of
[476]
how things were doing the company then
[479]
lost many of its top management the CMO
[482]
left and the VP of engineering then the
[484]
VP of quality the VP of Operations and
[486]
the customer experience manager just to
[487]
name a few signs were pointing to
[489]
troubled very troubled times and it was
[491]
just a matter of time before the
[493]
inevitable happened but no one expected
[495]
it to happen so fast with a brief
[497]
declaration and boost its website Rosa
[499]
Cao told the world that it will continue
[501]
to pursue strategic options on their new
[504]
ownership but also there it was between
[506]
the lines the real reason why boost had
[508]
failed
[509]
unfortunately developing manufacturing
[511]
and maintaining electric vehicles is
[514]
highly capital intensive it is just ask
[516]
Tesla and it will continue to be for a
[519]
long time so if you want to store your
[520]
own product my advice is to start with a
[522]
really really like really cool logo then
[525]
make hundreds of stickers and slap them
[527]
onto Chinese products you'll be better
[529]
off another alternative is you can take
[531]
errand drop Lin's course on how to
[532]
design merch he has a fantastic class
[535]
that covers everything from choosing a
[536]
design that works finding the best
[538]
vendors to make your stuff creating on
[540]
metal files for handoff and the
[543]
manufacturing at scale you can access
[544]
this class and thousands more for free
