Private Pilot Licence How To Reduce The Cost Of Learning To Fly & Getting A Private Pilots Licence - YouTube
Channel: Ben Lovegrove
[11]
in this video I'm going to talk about
[13]
flying lesson costs how to manage your
[16]
finances so that you fly more often
[19]
learning to fly and obtaining a private
[21]
pilot's license isn't cheap but you can
[24]
avoid unnecessary expense with a little
[26]
forward planning flying lesson costs
[29]
will vary but in the long run the
[31]
cheaper hourly rate may not be your best
[33]
option in this video I discuss the cost
[37]
of obtaining a fixed-wing pilot's
[38]
license for flying light aircraft in the
[40]
UK but the same principles apply
[43]
wherever you learn to fly in the UK
[47]
there are two types available ppl
[50]
private pilot's license and lapl light
[53]
aircraft pilot's license the lapl gives
[57]
the pilot fewer privileges than the ppl
[59]
so the requirements are less stringent
[61]
as a very rough guide the cost of a ppl
[65]
will start at eight thousand pounds and
[67]
the lapl will start at six thousand
[70]
costs for other types of aircraft like
[72]
micro lights or helicopters for example
[74]
will vary proportionally according to
[77]
the aircraft type let's review the real
[80]
costs involved in learning to fly as
[84]
well as the letters themselves you will
[85]
need to add several other smaller sums
[89]
first the flying lessons CAA minimums
[93]
plus some contingency
[95]
then student pilot kit books maps
[99]
navigational computer etc headset the
[104]
school may lend them but for several
[105]
reasons it's best to have your own
[107]
travel to and from the flight training
[110]
club or school other training aids for
[113]
example DVDs apps and software ground
[117]
school exam fees license application fee
[122]
now let's look at minimum hours and
[124]
actual hours logged if you visit the
[128]
CIA's website and read the requirements
[130]
of a ppl a you will see that you need a
[132]
minimum of 40 hours 45 hours of training
[135]
this should include a minimum of 25
[138]
hours of dual instruction and 10 hours
[140]
of solo flight I'll leave it to the CAA
[143]
or your flying instructor to explain the
[145]
finer details the key word here though
[148]
is minimum some people do manage to
[151]
complete all the requirements at or
[153]
close to that figure for 64 million
[156]
dollar question though is will you be
[159]
able to do so - you will need to factor
[162]
in a contingency into your budget for
[164]
extra hours above the minimum
[166]
requirements now let's take a brief look
[168]
at the importance of continuity in your
[170]
training you will save yourself a lot of
[173]
money if your budget is organized and
[175]
available at the start of your training
[177]
if you run out of money the continuity
[180]
is broken and when you return to
[182]
training you'll have to revise and
[184]
repeat previous exercises so plan your
[187]
finances in such a way that you won't
[189]
run out of money at a critical stage
[191]
trust me there's nothing more
[193]
frustrating as you enter your bank
[196]
account or reach your credit limit you
[198]
realize that you're about to shelve your
[200]
logbook just when things are getting
[201]
interesting flying schools are subject
[204]
to the same economic forces as any other
[206]
business so you're flying lesson costs
[210]
may increase over time due to inflation
[212]
now let's look at using the right flight
[214]
training school
[216]
flight training costs vary around the UK
[218]
and the same is true of most countries
[221]
you will pay more per hour
[224]
at a club with a shiny fleet of new
[225]
aircraft and an immaculate clubhouse
[228]
with all the facilities then you will
[231]
add a small grass strip with a porter
[233]
cabin as an office so let's look at a
[235]
few things to consider when choosing a
[237]
flight school proximity how long will it
[240]
take for you to get there the type of
[243]
runway if it's a grass airfield will it
[246]
be out of use in very wet weather
[248]
facilities - the buildings that
[250]
well-maintained the aircraft fleet
[253]
how many aircraft are there and how old
[255]
are they then as the instructors talk to
[258]
a few and ask to be shown around you
[261]
might want to consider the school's
[263]
reputation Google the school name and
[265]
read what others are saying about it the
[268]
school is closest to you might not be
[270]
the ideal choice when all things are
[272]
considered on the other hand you don't
[275]
want to travel for an hour or more to
[276]
reach your flight school at short notice
[278]
if a weather window opens speaking of
[281]
weather
[282]
what about learning to fly abroad the
[285]
attractive prospect of learning to fly
[286]
wherever there are near constant blue
[288]
skies and uncluttered airspace lures
[291]
some to full flight training holidays in
[294]
Florida South Africa Australia or
[296]
perhaps just across the channel the
[299]
attractions are obvious and the
[300]
additional costs of flights
[302]
accommodation and subsistence may seem a
[305]
price worth paying particularly if the
[307]
hourly rate is favourable however there
[310]
is another cost that is sometimes
[311]
overlooked if you cover most of the
[314]
syllabus in areas where the weather is
[316]
often predictably Pleasant and the
[318]
airspace is wide open and free of
[320]
restrictions how will you cope when you
[322]
return to the UK
[324]
for example will you have the necessary
[326]
skills and just as importantly
[328]
confidence to make a decision when the
[330]
weather is borderline will your
[333]
navigation skills keep you out of
[334]
controlled airspace and danger areas
[337]
some students who returned from flight
[340]
training trips abroad find themselves
[342]
asking for additional training with a UK
[344]
flying instructor in order to bring
[346]
their skills up to the standard required
[348]
in Britain's comparatively congested
[350]
airspace perhaps you're flying holiday
[353]
would be better spent our building after
[355]
you've obtained your ppl in the UK on
[359]
the other hand learning to fly in a
[360]
quiet airstrip in predictable weather
[362]
might give you the time to learn how to
[364]
fly the aircraft well and without other
[366]
distractions now let's talk briefly
[369]
about changing instructors you are going
[372]
to be spending thousands of pounds so
[374]
it's worth remembering that you are the
[375]
customer you may be in all of the
[377]
instructors in particular the CFI but
[380]
they depend on students like you for
[381]
their livelihood if you have any
[384]
complaints or concerns don't let them
[386]
fester if you feel it's appropriate to
[389]
go and see the CFI and ask for a quiet
[390]
chat assuming he or she is
[393]
professionally minded then you'll be met
[395]
with an open mind for example you may
[398]
find that you don't get along with your
[399]
instructor this is unusual but it does
[402]
occasionally happen we are all different
[404]
personality types and just occasionally
[407]
we don't gel with a person that's
[408]
sitting next to us for hours on end so
[411]
remembering that it's your money you're
[412]
spending go and address this with the
[414]
CFI and he or she should offer an
[417]
alternative this is likely to save you
[419]
money because you will learn faster with
[421]
an instructor who is on your wavelength
[423]
to conclude a short warning like any
[427]
other commercial establishment running
[429]
on tight margins and reliant upon a
[432]
strong economy flight schools can go out
[434]
of business if mismanaged or if they run
[436]
out of students for this reason it's
[439]
never a good idea to handle a large
[441]
amounts of cash up front
[443]
if they tempt you with a discount for a
[445]
large deposit then perhaps a few hundred
[447]
pounds might be worth a risk but I would
[450]
suggest not handing over a thousand or
[452]
more perhaps things have improved
[454]
greatly since I was a student pilot so
[457]
feel free to ignore all my advice just
[460]
remember that you want to go from zero
[462]
hours to pilot-in-command so managing
[465]
your finances is your first lesson in
[467]
being in control I hope this video has
[470]
given you some useful tips you can read
