This Democrat is Blocking $15 Minimum Wage - YouTube
Channel: The Young Turks
[0]
arizona senator kristen cinema uh
[2]
doesn't think that a provision
[3]
in the coveted 19 relief bill about 15
[6]
minimum wage federal minimum wage
[8]
belongs there um so she's joining also
[10]
joe manchin as being
[12]
the second democratic senator that is
[14]
against the 15 minimum wage that has
[16]
been debated
[16]
because she doesn't think it belongs in
[18]
this particular uh relief package in
[20]
fact this type of legislation
[22]
belongs in a different kind of debate so
[24]
let's go to politico's uh
[26]
story on this uh and it quotes cinnamon
[28]
saying what's important is whether or
[30]
not it's directly related to short-term
[32]
coveted relief
[33]
and if it's not then i'm not going to
[35]
support it in this legislation
[37]
the minimum wage provision is not
[38]
appropriate for the reconciliation
[40]
process
[41]
it is not a budget item and it shouldn't
[44]
be in there
[45]
let's start with that is it a is it a
[47]
budget item and is it not belonging a
[49]
reconciliation process in this
[50]
particular case because 15
[52]
minimum wage is definitely not helpful
[53]
for people that are suffering during
[55]
covert 19.
[56]
i'm chomping on the bit for this one
[58]
because this is my wheelhouse as
[59]
somebody who's worked in the committee
[60]
of urban affairs and
[61]
uh and worked policy and let me just say
[64]
that this was totally refuted there was
[66]
a cbo score this is a very technical
[68]
thing there's something known as the
[69]
byrd rule
[70]
which was passed in the uh late 70s into
[73]
the reagan administration which says
[74]
that you can't put extraneous items into
[76]
reconciliation bills
[78]
and an extraneous item is something that
[80]
doesn't have budget impact
[81]
the cbo just ruled that the minimum wage
[85]
increase
[85]
would have a significant budget impact
[88]
there was a
[89]
it was a it's funny because it was
[91]
conservatives kind of self-owning
[93]
uh the person that's head of the cbo is
[95]
somebody who used to work for the
[96]
american enterprise institute was put in
[98]
during the
[99]
trump administration is not a good faith
[101]
neutral arbiter he's a right-winger who
[103]
was trying to argue that the 15
[104]
minimum wage would hurt the economy and
[106]
lower you know it would cost 1.4 million
[109]
jobs even though the
[110]
economists worldwide now agree that that
[112]
would not happen there would be no
[114]
adverse job effect
[115]
and he said it would cost around 50
[117]
billion i believe was the number
[119]
to the federal budget please fact check
[120]
me on that and
[122]
so bernie sanders recently tweeted well
[124]
there you go that's budget impact
[126]
we disagree with it but the cbo has
[128]
ruled budget impact there's no way you
[130]
can
[130]
raise the bird rule objection that's
[132]
that it's going to be part of the
[134]
stimulus bill
[135]
and it's already passed through the
[137]
house it includes a 15
[138]
minimum wage and my opinion on the
[140]
politics is this is something supported
[142]
by over 60 percent of americans
[146]
bluff ask them beg them to vote no put
[149]
it in the bill
[150]
bring it to the floor and say you're
[152]
going to vote against these checks
[153]
you're going to vote against
[154]
a bill that has 68 approval do it
[157]
show us and uh you know the thing is
[161]
when the shoe is on the other foot
[163]
it's a republican bill with a bunch of
[164]
stuff we hate somehow
[166]
they can find the wherewithal to vote
[167]
for it for the greater good
[169]
so they may not like it but as far as
[171]
the technical rule with the bird rule
[173]
and all these other elements too bad so
[176]
sad
[176]
vote for it yeah so first
[179]
let me dive in on the technical stuff
[181]
that mike mentioned and then i'm to give
[183]
you the
[183]
the more important big picture look here
[185]
so uh
[186]
mike was right it's it's 54 billion
[188]
dollars that the cbo
[190]
said it would cost uh the budget and
[193]
and add to the deficit bernie sanders is
[196]
right
[197]
any budget impact it doesn't matter if
[198]
it's negative or positive means that it
[200]
passes the bird rule and can be in
[202]
reconciliation
[203]
so uh mansion and cinema are wrong and
[206]
it's not disputable it's a
[208]
stone cold fact now is also right the
[212]
guy's conservative
[213]
uh reputable economists who looked at
[215]
this said that it would actually
[217]
help the deficit that it by 65 billion
[220]
dollars
[221]
because people have more money because
[223]
they're making a higher minimum wage
[225]
they need less government assistance so
[227]
the deficit goes down not
[229]
up there are other factors but that's a
[231]
giant one okay and these are things that
[233]
can be oh sorry go ahead
[234]
yeah and just one more fact that mike
[236]
mentioned
[237]
it overwhelming majority of the country
[239]
agrees to higher minimum wage
[241]
by the way huge majorities in red states
[243]
agree to minimum wage
[244]
increases including uh majorities of
[247]
republicans
[248]
but if you're just looking at democratic
[250]
voters and cinema and mansion are
[251]
theoretically democrats and should care
[253]
about their base
[255]
86 percent of democrats want a higher
[257]
minimum wage
[258]
but as mike mentioned earlier in the
[260]
show and this is something we say on tyt
[262]
often
[263]
the republicans fear their base and the
[265]
democrats hate their base
[267]
and so that's why cinema and man should
[269]
act that way it's all based on the way
[270]
that you want to go ahead and pose this
[272]
okay
[272]
so again how much has it brought up that
[275]
many of the people that work these
[276]
minimum wage jobs
[277]
are their their income is is the only
[280]
way
[281]
it exists to to an extent to even barely
[284]
pay what they can pay
[285]
even though they're in extreme debt is
[287]
because of government
[288]
help so if you don't want government to
[290]
help people this is a republican
[291]
argument
[292]
i think there's a way you can pose and
[293]
be like hey republicans who want to be
[295]
fiscally responsible with our government
[297]
money with your taxpayer money
[299]
and you talk about welfare queens and
[301]
all these these
[302]
triggering terms that that you use as as
[305]
a dog whistle to make sure that your
[306]
constituents and your voters
[308]
don't like the people that they think
[310]
are using or are sucking on the
[311]
government teat
[312]
in order to make any and to make it
[314]
through in life you can use that same
[316]
argument it's like hey you guys we want
[317]
to get people off of government
[318]
assistance do you agree with me
[320]
make sure that they're all on board
[321]
first you agree with me let's get people
[322]
off of government assistance
[324]
hey this study tells us it will get
[325]
people off of government assistance
[327]
because that's the reality because if
[329]
you add up numbers
[331]
uh it ends up seeing the obvious
[334]
bottom line is that we're saving money
[336]
because people have
[338]
it now rather than barely giving them
[340]
anything working them until they're dead
[342]
and we move on to the next one but we
[344]
don't care about citizens what we're
[345]
caring about is oh it's me though
[347]
hey they're taking my job they start
[348]
pitting people against each other
[350]
mcdonald's workers versus walmart
[352]
workers hey well you know
[353]
those guys over there are getting
[354]
government assistance while you're at
[356]
home
[356]
filling out the government assistance
[357]
form because you need it too but no one
[360]
says that
[361]
there's no difference between the way
[362]
walmart plays their folks at mcdonald's
[363]
i'm sure there's some here and there
[364]
because there's different franchises and
[366]
all that stuff
[367]
but there's many people who are
[368]
struggling and work multiple jobs
[370]
and have a family have kids and trying
[372]
to figure out how to make ends meet
[374]
but none of that is ever brought up it's
[376]
just hey they're trying to take from the
[377]
government
[378]
when reality how much money we go back
[380]
to the the ramsey stuff we talked about
[382]
earlier how much money are we giving
[384]
to corporations i mean some of how 1400
[387]
bucks is so nothing
[388]
to give to american people hey it's 15
[390]
bucks nothing per hour to give the
[392]
american people
[392]
maybe they'll work harder maybe they'll
[394]
work the the kinds of jobs and then
[396]
they'll be retain those things and we
[398]
don't have turnover jobs we're about job
[400]
numbers all the time
[401]
we go through all these things the
[402]
republicans say that they care about
[404]
and the answer is right there every time
[406]
they bring up something and the answer
[407]
is pay people more
[409]
say hey how about we pay people more
[411]
because that is always the answer
[413]
yeah so you have so much to say about
[415]
this yeah
[417]
let me back up what uh j.r is saying
[419]
with numbers too
[420]
and then i want to get to the big
[421]
picture so uh if we increase the minimum
[424]
wage to 15
[425]
an hour it would affect 32 million
[427]
americans and
[428]
it would get them 92 billion dollars
[432]
extra per year which leads the big
[434]
picture
[435]
so i told you guys ahead of time if you
[438]
watch the young turks you knew it was
[440]
going to happen
[441]
that the democrats were not going to put
[444]
minimum wage in this bill
[445]
i said it before anyone did anything
[447]
about it right
[449]
and people said i was crazy the
[451]
mainstream media is
[452]
also dutifully reported democrats love
[455]
them increasing the minimum wage they're
[456]
going to put it in the bill
[458]
uh and and and the democrats are like
[460]
how dare you outrageous jank to say that
[462]
they're not going to do it right
[464]
well how did i know they weren't going
[466]
to do it well it's because
[469]
corporate democrats like cinema and
[470]
mansion report to their donors they
[473]
don't care about the people of arizona
[474]
or west virginia
[475]
that's not who got them elected their
[477]
donors bought
[478]
all the ads in those markets their
[480]
donors gave them
[481]
all everything they've ever had and
[483]
their donors are
[485]
corporations and they view it as either
[488]
i have the 92 billion dollars or the
[490]
workers have the 92
[492]
billion dollars mansion and cinema what
[494]
the hell did you think i bought you for
[496]
no go kill the minimum wage we're not
[499]
going to have it
[500]
so what happened over the last week even
[502]
though the house
[503]
put it in nancy pelosi knows that this
[505]
senate's going to kill it
[506]
she never meant a word of it and then
[508]
biden came out in the interview and said
[510]
uh you know look in one area of
[512]
compromise is we could take out the 15
[514]
minimum wage he was always going to do
[517]
that i told you ahead of time he was
[518]
going to do it and then he did do it
[521]
so that him that was him saying to the
[522]
parliamentarian it's okay if you take it
[524]
out
[525]
pink wing right and even if you don't
[527]
and now they're worried that the
[528]
parliamentarian can't take it out
[530]
because bernie sanders is correct
[532]
and so they're cornered so now they
[534]
unleash cinema and mansion to say
[536]
well we're going to kill it anyway
[538]
because otherwise we'll vote no
[540]
because they're corporate stooges and by
[542]
the way this is what the number one
[544]
problem with mainstream media is if you
[545]
listen to them you will
[547]
never get this analysis because they
[549]
find it outrageous
[550]
to say that politicians work for their
[552]
donors because they get millions of
[554]
dollars from them
[555]
for everyone else that's the most
[557]
obvious point i've ever made
[558]
and that's why they keep wondering jake
[559]
why do you keep making that point watch
[561]
mainstream media
[562]
they never ever tell you what actually
[565]
drives politicians
[567]
might go yeah i think the funny thing
[569]
about the minimum wage is like there
[571]
really is no argument
[572]
against it you know the mcdonald's ceo
[574]
just came out an investor call and he
[576]
said yeah 50
[577]
minimum wage is fine it wouldn't hurt us
[579]
at all um
[581]
every state that we already have a 50
[582]
minimum wage because remember there are
[584]
multiple states that have passed minimum
[585]
wage increases already
[587]
they have not seen any job losses
[590]
they've just seen more income for the
[592]
bottom
[593]
and so you have what something that
[596]
could unite republicans independents
[598]
democrats
[598]
the ceo of mcdonald says it's not a big
[600]
deal it would help
[601]
millions of people would raise millions
[603]
of people out of poverty give raises for
[605]
30 plus million people
[607]
there's really no argument against it
[609]
that's rooted in reality political
[611]
reality it would not be unpopular
[614]
for any of these people in their
[615]
districts it would be a huge win
[618]
for the democrats and even for these
[620]
candidates what's really funny to me
[621]
about christian cinema is there's
[622]
another democrat
[623]
who just won in 2020 in that
[627]
in that same state and he doesn't seem
[629]
to be objecting to it right now
[631]
so how there's no really no argument to
[634]
be made other than what jenk is saying
[636]
uh is are they ruled by their donors
[638]
does anyone think
[639]
the people of west virginia one of the
[640]
poor states if not the poorest in the
[642]
country are
[643]
arguing against a 15 minimum wage
[646]
they're absolutely not
[647]
there is no basis politically
[650]
economically to oppose the 15
[652]
minimum wage and the one thing that i'm
[654]
going to disagree with you jenk is
[656]
bernie sanders is now the senate budget
[659]
committee chair
[660]
the progressive caucus has grown in
[663]
strength
[664]
they have their consolidating power it's
[666]
led by people like ilhan
[668]
omar and katie porter and they're gonna
[671]
throw their weight around and i'm gonna
[672]
give them strength
[673]
i'm i'm as cynical as you about
[675]
christian cinema and joe manchin
[676]
but i think that we need to exercise our
[679]
power we need to this is the
[680]
it's now or never you know what we can
[682]
get in these next two years
[685]
is going to be huge i'm 36 years old and
[687]
since i've been alive the democrats have
[689]
controlled the house
[690]
the senate and the white house for a
[691]
total of four years
[693]
so these next two years are absolutely
[696]
vital
[696]
for us getting any progress and it's up
[699]
to us to not
[700]
accept anything less than big changes
[703]
across the board
[704]
my last thought on this real fast jack
[705]
real fast my last thought
[707]
is do you remember when manchin kind of
[709]
got strong armed by by the
[710]
administration
[711]
biden's administration with kamala
[712]
harris going to this backyard going on
[714]
his local news station
[716]
and saying hey do you understand what's
[717]
going on with west virginia you guys
[719]
rank here with your
[720]
with your uh with your small business
[721]
you rank here with your unemployment you
[722]
rank here with your income you rank here
[724]
with everywhere
[725]
and basically told them hey so this guy
[727]
who represents you
[728]
all this talk about how you don't need
[730]
anything else now you don't want
[730]
anything else do you believe him and
[732]
he's like i can't
[734]
i can't believe you did that to me so
[735]
now here comes the test they were
[737]
expecting
[737]
joe manchin to be that guy did they
[739]
expect christian cinema to be that
[741]
second person that's gonna do this and
[743]
will they then go to her backyard
[745]
proverbially not necessarily go and do
[746]
the same thing
[747]
but are they gonna go to her backyard
[748]
and say hey arizona do you support what
[751]
she's talking about for real
[752]
is she really saying what you think and
[754]
so this is their test
[755]
to go ahead and confirm that they're
[758]
really on board for something like this
[759]
or if they're just saying it hoping that
[761]
it kind of won't get much pushback from
[762]
anyone it's getting pushback are you
[764]
going to push back again
[766]
yeah so i want to clarify a couple of
[768]
things first of all i don't want anybody
[769]
to misunderstand me
[770]
uh are we gonna fight on minimum wage
[772]
hell yes are we gonna win on uh raising
[774]
the minimum wage hell yes
[775]
but let me explain how we're gonna win
[777]
okay and so and i'll answer
[779]
uh jr's question here yes they not only
[782]
expect the cinema to do it and by the
[783]
way kamaharis to be fair to her and the
[785]
biden administration
[787]
also went to arizona so they already did
[789]
do it to pressure cinema
[791]
uh but they're pressuring them on the
[793]
overall covert relief bill
[795]
they are not pressuring them on the
[796]
minimum wage
[798]
so um i want you to be to understand
[801]
what i'm cynical about and what i'm not
[803]
it's not going to get into this bill i
[805]
would be shocked
[806]
okay now mike is right
[809]
bernie's got power now progressives have
[812]
power now in the house
[813]
so it'll be more of a fight than than it
[816]
was before
[817]
but it but i know joe biden joe biden
[820]
desperately wants to compromise and
[822]
never believed in this in the first
[824]
place
[824]
they're going to jettison it and they're
[826]
looking for an excuse they're like oh
[828]
parliamentarian
[829]
ah no that didn't work mansion ah that
[832]
didn't work
[832]
cinema like they're just they're gonna
[834]
find every excuse to keep it out of this
[836]
bill
[837]
so now and by the way uh
[840]
there was a poll in west virginia so
[842]
it's not in dispute
[844]
a huge majority of the people of west
[846]
virginia want a higher minimum wage
[849]
so if joe manchin is saying otherwise
[850]
he's a proven liar
[853]
uh his the majority of his donors don't
[854]
want a higher minimum wage which i want
[856]
to explain that as well
[857]
so now and this is how you actually get
[859]
a higher minimum wage so now mcdonald's
[861]
is saying that they don't agree with the
[863]
other corporations they think 15
[865]
minute wage is okay why because that
[867]
socialist bernie sanders
[869]
put a world of pressure on him you know
[871]
now they when he was running for
[873]
president twice they saw a socialist
[874]
yeah he's going to shoot people in
[875]
central park no wait a minute he has a
[877]
50-year career in politics
[879]
so we already know what bernie sanders
[880]
is going to do he just did it
[882]
so he did it not just now but during the
[884]
trump years he put pressure on
[886]
companies like mcdonald's but first he
[888]
started with amazon
[890]
and he said fifty dollar minimum wage
[891]
fifteen dollar minimum wage and you know
[892]
what happened he
[893]
broke amazon amazon among the most evil
[896]
corporations in terms of taking away
[899]
voter rights
[900]
bowed down to bernie sanders and
[903]
increase the minimum wage fifty dollars
[904]
you know what they did afterwards
[906]
since they already had the higher costs
[908]
they then turned around in their great
[910]
might
[911]
and put pressure on other companies i.e
[914]
their competition
[915]
to increase the wages to 15 that's the
[918]
genius
[919]
of progressive politics and bernie
[921]
sanders and one of those companies was
[923]
mcdonald's now mcdonald's about to break
[925]
and go to 15
[926]
so now mcdonald's is turning around to
[928]
all other corporations and going
[930]
you should raise the minimum wage too so
[932]
that's actually how you get
[933]
practical change and the only ones who
[937]
ever delivered for ur progresses so
[939]
which leads us to the last portion of
[940]
this
[942]
so once we in my opinion i hope i'm
[945]
wrong of course
[946]
lose on on this on the covert relief
[948]
build and then i am
[950]
super happy and it's not a happy thing
[952]
or an unhappy thing it must happen
[954]
they must introduce it as a standalone
[956]
bill and now the good news here is
[960]
will progressives in the in the house do
[962]
it absolutely will bernie do it in the
[964]
senate
[964]
absolutely right and when it comes
[967]
across as a standalone bill
[969]
that's when we there is no
[972]
no force on earth that will stop us from
[974]
raising that minimum wage
[976]
we will fight and we'll put everything
[978]
on the line i'll ask for your help in
[980]
doing that
[980]
we'll get volunteers we'll get people
[983]
into the senate i don't care how
[985]
many walls and moats and things that
[987]
they put up we won't be like the right
[989]
wing
[990]
we'll do it the right way we'll create
[991]
in the words of the civil rights
[992]
movement
[993]
good trouble okay not bad trouble like
[996]
the right wing does but good
[997]
trouble and there's no way
[1000]
we're gonna let corporate democrats beat
[1003]
on
[1003]
beat us on this and i'll tell you last
[1005]
thing on it guys not just because it's
[1007]
gonna get you guys 92 billion dollars
[1008]
and you deserve it you work your
[1010]
ass off for it you're not the
[1012]
republicans are the worst people on
[1014]
earth you're not bums you're working for
[1016]
it
[1016]
you're working for it and you've been
[1018]
incredibly productive and you deserve it
[1020]
right
[1021]
but also because of the politics if you
[1024]
told everybody that you were definitely
[1026]
going to deliver higher wages and you
[1028]
were definitely going to increase the
[1029]
minimum wage
[1030]
and then you don't do it well of course
[1032]
they're not going to vote for you in 22
[1034]
or 24.
[1036]
the donors drive democrats to do the
[1039]
worst
[1040]
political maneuvers in history that is
[1042]
what they
[1043]
that is why they keep losing when they
[1045]
have overwhelming advantages
[1047]
on the issues mississippi passed a
[1050]
higher minimum wage on a
[1052]
ballot measure yeah if you're a
[1053]
democratic president
[1055]
and you can't get that done nationally
[1057]
you are the worst politician in american
[1059]
history
[1060]
and you should be treated as such i mean
[1063]
jank like uh obama had never passed the
[1065]
minimum wage increase the last minimum
[1067]
wage increase was passed by george w
[1069]
bush
[1069]
so i mean the democratic party has a
[1072]
pretty bad track record of fighting for
[1074]
an issue
[1075]
as popular as this no but that's but
[1078]
mike that's exactly right
[1079]
that's why what i'm trying to tell
[1080]
people and honestly even good
[1082]
progressives in congress don't get it
[1084]
they keep thinking that pelosi and
[1086]
schumer and biden are on their side
[1089]
they've never shown that they're on your
[1091]
side you don't
[1092]
you have to defeat them to get the
[1094]
minimum wage higher you have to defeat
[1097]
them
[1097]
you can oh no don't worry pelosi will
[1099]
give it to us later no she won't
[1101]
she's on the other side you schmucks
[1104]
okay so
[1105]
yeah super major to mike's point she had
[1107]
a super majority during the obama years
[1110]
and obama had eight years to push for a
[1112]
higher minimum wage
[1114]
corporate democrats work for
[1116]
corporations
[1117]
they're never they're not on your side
[1119]
you you can't
[1120]
pass bills with their help you have to
[1123]
pass bills
[1124]
despite their fight against you
[1127]
so progressives let's go up an atom
[1130]
and understand who your opponents are
[1133]
it's not just republicans
[1134]
it's also your so-called goddamn
[1137]
colleagues
[1138]
