most of you have seen satellite maps
[3]
and you may have observed that india's satellite imagery
[7]
is blurred comapared to other nations
[12]
you see UAE, USA , Europe or any other country
[16]
one can see the same level of clarity in the images
[20]
so why is it like this, lets find out
[36]
if you unable to understand what is mean by blur
[39]
then this will clear your doubts
[43]
this is a fully zoomed location in our country
[47]
see the details in roads, cars and other stuff
[50]
and similarly we cans see different locations for a better idea of clarity
[56]
now lets see a different location
[59]
compare the details in cars, roads and buildings over here
[68]
these are some more example images
[70]
there are 2 main reasons due to which satellite images are not clear in india
[75]
out which the first one is more important i.e the Law in india
[79]
in india, for normal use, private companies are allowed only
[83]
a certain limit for resolution
[85]
and it's 1 metre spatial or 1 metre GSD (Ground spatial distance)
[93]
which means that the image shown by a satellite
[96]
will have it's smallest pixel
[99]
sizes 1x1 metre in ground or surface of the earth
[104]
and this the max they can do, some places have even more restrictions
[111]
Now what is Resolution ?
[113]
any image is made up of tiny squares
[115]
and many such squares form an image
[117]
more the number of squares, more clear is the image
[122]
Just like you can select 720p or 1080p on youtube for video quality
[128]
thats the resolution
[129]
i.e the numbers there denote number of sqaures in the video vercally
[136]
in normal images theses squares are too small
[138]
you cant even see them with your naked eye
[141]
but satellite imagery being on such a huge scale
[144]
their pixel size can be from a few centimetres to metres
[148]
many years back when satellite maps became widespread in india
[151]
even average person could access satellite maps
[155]
the government decided, due to security reasons
[158]
the entire general population and companies especially
[161]
would'nt be the right entities to allow high res maps
[165]
and 1 metre GSD order was set for all private companies
[170]
i.e even if there is a satellite that can get high res images
[174]
& obviously many private companies and government itself have those satellites
[179]
that can capture better images than 1 m GSD
[185]
are virutually blurred instead of showing high res images
[192]
now this is done because
[194]
whatever military establishments we have
[196]
road networks we have
[198]
and other sensitive areas can be protected
[201]
initially most governments had these concerns that
[204]
High res maps can be used for wrong purposes like
[207]
spying, emergencies etc
[211]
and this was'nt an concern only for india but almost all countries worldwide
[218]
and similar rules were setup worldwide
[220]
but by time, as tech became advanced
[222]
and satellite maps became more useful than just maps
[226]
and were used in other applications
[231]
the industry demanded government to increase resolution
[235]
and countries that started with 2-3 metre GSD rules
[239]
kept updating their rules every 2,3 or max 4 years
[244]
security later known not to be a big concern as earlier said
[246]
higher resolution was permitted
[249]
However the last time india updated it's resolution was 11 years back
[253]
and has'nt been updated since
[256]
ride haling, logostics , surveying companies
[261]
have to face difficulties because of low resolution
[266]
and they have been demanding to increase resolution atleast of 0.5m GSD
[274]
If the rules are passed
[276]
we will see more clear maps in coming years in india
[282]
but because of bureaucracy, this might be far still
[286]
and let's see how long it takes.
[290]
The second factor is related to plane imaging
[293]
whatever important cities exist in the word
[297]
google or google's data providers
[299]
use air planes to image them, instead of satellites
[303]
airplanes with imaging equipment are flown over cities for imaging
[310]
and thus cities allowing such permissions, have high resoultions
[317]
because of these planes, not jus satellites
[321]
but due to certain rules again
[323]
it's not allowed to use planes in most cases
[326]
and many permissions are needed if an exception
[330]
this why google or it's companies just dont use planes in india
[335]
and use satellites exclusively
[338]
and this is why you see a difference in clarity
[341]
between india and most other nations
[348]
I hope you liked the video.
