I Tried the Step App with My Teen - Here's What You NEED TO KNOW - YouTube
Channel: Smart Family Money
[0]
I had seen some ads for the Step app and I've聽
heard it's been advertised all over TikTok. It聽聽
[5]
seemed a little too good to be true and I was聽
wondering - What is the catch? So my daughter聽聽
[10]
and I tried out the Step app and we're going to聽
tell you what we really thought of it. The Step聽聽
[14]
app is kind of a lot of things combined. It's聽
an app that's a lot like Venmo that allows you聽聽
[18]
to send money back and forth between people and it聽
comes with a Visa card that actually builds credit聽聽
[24]
and the Step app is intended for teenagers. They can use it as young as age 13. If they're聽聽
[30]
under 18, they do need a sponsor which can be any聽
responsible adult connected to their account. I'm聽聽
[36]
a mom of a teenager and I want to teach my kids聽
about money so I was really excited to try this聽聽
[40]
out and my daughter was really excited to have her聽
very own Visa card. By the way, if you want to try聽聽
[45]
this Step app yourself, be sure to use my referral聽
link down below because you'll get five dollars聽聽
[50]
free if you use my link. So setting up the Step聽
account was super easy and I set it up myself and聽聽
[56]
then invited my daughter to add it to her phone.聽
Teens can also start the process themselves and聽聽
[61]
then they can invite an adult to be their sponsor聽
after they've already signed up. To set up the聽聽
[65]
Step app, you just have to have a phone number聽
that you verify, your legal first and last name,聽聽
[71]
birth date - and make sure you're using the聽
correct birth date, and you also need your聽聽
[75]
email address and your mailing address. If you're聽
over 18, you're also going to need the last four聽聽
[79]
of your social security number but don't worry.聽
They do not run a credit check. After that,聽聽
[83]
you get to pick the color of your card, which is聽
really fun. I picked pink my daughter picked blue聽聽
[87]
and then you get to sign it in the app and then聽
they print that signature right on the back of聽聽
[91]
the card. If you use the referral program,聽
you'll get the five dollars right away,聽聽
[95]
after you finish this step. After I got set up,聽
the first thing I did was add a bank account.聽聽
[99]
It links using the plaid app, which is totally聽
secure so it's a really good way to do it, but if聽聽
[105]
you transfer money with a bank account it's really聽
slow. It takes a few days. So after I realized how聽聽
[109]
slow it was, I also linked a debit card from that聽
same bank account and when you use a debit card,聽聽
[115]
it pulls the money immediately and it's straight聽
into your Step account. I also used the app to set聽聽
[120]
up a monthly allowance for her and it'll pull from聽
my debit card and put it right into her account聽聽
[124]
every month. My daughter and I tried sending聽
money back and forth to each other and it was聽聽
[128]
super easy. She thought it was a lot of fun and聽
if you sync up your contacts, it's really easy to聽聽
[133]
send and receive money from anybody. If they don't聽
have the app, they'll just be prompted to get it聽聽
[138]
when you send them a message. There's also options聽
in there to link other apps like Venmo and Paypal聽聽
[143]
or you can also set up direct deposits of聽
paychecks and you can also set it up to work聽聽
[147]
with Google pay and Apple pay. Unfortunately,聽
there is not a way to deposit checks or add cash聽聽
[153]
directly into it but that is a feature they're聽
saying is coming soon. When you sign up you also聽聽
[157]
get a virtual card which is a separate credit聽
card number from your physical card and you聽聽
[162]
can use that with Google or Apple pay or to shop聽
online and the advantage of the virtual card is if聽聽
[167]
anything ever happens to it, you can lock it, you聽
can immediately request a new number, and they'll聽聽
[172]
just replace your number, so it's a lot easier than聽
waiting for a new physical card. After we signed聽聽
[176]
up they said they were gonna send our cards within聽
three weeks but it took exactly a week and they聽聽
[180]
showed up in the mail. When we got our cards, we聽
were super excited to try it out and try spending聽聽
[184]
some money. I tried mine first at the grocery聽
store. It was really easy. It worked just like any聽聽
[190]
other credit card. Now if you're asked when you聽
check out. If you're asked credit or debit, you're聽聽
[194]
supposed to choose credit. It didn't ask me when聽
I used it at the grocery store though and as I聽聽
[198]
was walking out of the store, I got a notification聽
right away on my phone that said I had spent money聽聽
[202]
from my Step account. My daughter tried hers next聽
at Target and she also had a really easy time,聽聽
[207]
even though she'd not really used a card of her聽
own before. She got a notification right away聽聽
[211]
that said she had spent money at Target. I was聽
waiting for a notification to come through on聽聽
[215]
my phone but I didn't get one. I wasn't sure if I聽
was supposed to get a notification. We decided to聽聽
[220]
try hers at the grocery store and once again she聽
got a notification on her phone and I did not.聽聽
[225]
So if I logged in, I could see what she spent聽
at what stores but it was not giving me a pop-up聽聽
[231]
notification for that and I did not see anywhere聽
I could turn that on. Now if I log in, I could see聽聽
[236]
what where she had shopped, so I could see she had聽
a transaction at Target and she had a transaction聽聽
[240]
at the grocery store but I can't see exactly聽
what she bought. I can just see where she was聽聽
[244]
shopping. So next up, we wanted to try ATMs. With聽
Step, you can currently use ATMs for withdrawing聽聽
[249]
cash only. You can't make deposits but that's聽
something they said is possibly coming soon.聽聽
[254]
I knew there was an ATM finder in the app, but I聽
was having trouble figuring out where it was. I'll聽聽
[258]
give you the steps to find it. You have to click聽
on manage card, then select your physical card,聽聽
[264]
then click ATM info. and then click find a no fee聽
ATM. It'll automatically bring up a list of no fee聽聽
[271]
ATMs based on your location. For me, it was mostly聽
Target stores and there was a medical center and a聽聽
[277]
college listed there, but I figured out a trick to聽
find more ATMs. If you uncheck the box that says聽聽
[283]
"Plus Alliance ATMs only", it'll give you a list聽
of way more ATMs including lots of major banks. So聽聽
[289]
first up I wanted to try one of those no fee ATMs聽
and I tried the Target one. Worked great. I got聽聽
[294]
$20 out. No problems. Then I wanted to try one of聽
the regular bank ones so I tried out a US bank ATM聽聽
[300]
and when I went into the ATM, it gave me a message聽
that I was going to get a $3.50 fee. I had seen in聽聽
[306]
the Step app that they said they would reimburse聽
ATM fees but I wasn't really sure about that,聽聽
[311]
but I decided to give it a try for you guys.聽
Oh I also forgot that in the app it said that聽聽
[315]
I should choose credit card when I'm using an聽
ATM. I chose checking and it still worked fine.聽聽
[321]
Because it had that ATM fee, I was withdrawing聽
twenty dollars but it charged my account $23.50,聽聽
[327]
but in the Step app I could see that it was saying聽
I will be reimbursed for the fee within 24 hours聽聽
[333]
and it was exactly 24 hours later that I got a聽
deposit of $3.50 from Step, so it totally worked.聽聽
[339]
I also wanted to try out the referral program,聽
so I referred my husband by sending him a text聽聽
[343]
message. He was able to sign up and be ready to go聽
in about two minutes and we each got five dollars聽聽
[349]
totally instantly. It was really pretty cool.聽
Even though I'm my daughter's official sponsor,聽聽
[354]
my husband is also able to send and receive money聽
with her and he can send and receive money with me聽聽
[359]
too. So here are some of the pros that I see with聽
the Step app. I like that it's actually a real聽聽
[364]
FDIC-insured bank so you know your money is safe聽
in there. It's actually from Evolve Bank and Trust聽聽
[370]
is the name and they've been around for decades.聽
I also like that the Step app builds credit for聽聽
[374]
your teenager. The way this works is the Visa card聽
is actually a secured credit card and that means聽聽
[380]
it's a credit card but you cannot spend more than聽
is in your account so there's no way that you can聽聽
[384]
overspend or have interest and I want to check on聽
how this actually works for my daughter. Being 13,聽聽
[390]
she doesn't have a credit report but I'm going to聽
try pulling her credit report in a month or two聽聽
[394]
to see if it actually is building credit for her聽
but I suspect it really will. I really like that聽聽
[399]
the Step app has no fees of any kind. There are no聽
overdraft fees. There's no interest. Really and truly聽聽
[404]
nothing. And I really like that you can get money聽
at ATMs and that they even reimburse fees on those聽聽
[408]
ATMs that have fees. I think it's pretty cool you聽
can do direct deposit too. I'm thinking when my聽聽
[413]
daughter gets a job in a few years that might be聽
kind of a fun way for her to be able to manage聽聽
[417]
her paycheck. I also like being able to send聽
money to her and I can also monitor her spending聽聽
[422]
in there. The biggest thing I like though is it聽
allows her to use a card instead of always cash聽聽
[427]
in person and she's able to shop online and be聽
a lot more independent. The biggest disadvantage聽聽
[432]
I see as a Step app right now is that there is聽
no way to deposit checks or cash, but as I said聽聽
[437]
that's something they're saying they're going to聽
do soon. The only way you could get checks or cash聽聽
[441]
into it is to deposit them into a regular bank聽
account and then transfer them into the Step app.聽聽
[446]
Another disadvantage to the Step app is there聽
aren't really parental controls. I don't even聽聽
[451]
get notified when she spends money. I can see聽
where she has spent money but that's about it.聽聽
[456]
I feel like my daughter is pretty responsible聽
though so I don't really have a problem with聽聽
[460]
this but I think some parents might be bothered聽
by the lack of controls. So how about my original聽聽
[464]
question of like what's the catch? I was kind of聽
wondering, how do they make money? Well they make聽聽
[469]
money anytime you use the Visa card at a store聽
and that store is going to pay a percentage fee聽聽
[475]
when you use the card, just like any other Visa聽
card and that's how they make money, but that聽聽
[479]
doesn't cost you anything as the consumer, and聽
Step says they're very committed to never having聽聽
[484]
any fees of any kind on their accounts. I asked聽
my teenage daughter if she would recommend the聽聽
[488]
Step account and she said absolutely and I agree聽
with her. I think it's pretty great and I would聽聽
[493]
definitely recommend it to our friends. Now if聽
you want to try it yourself, make sure you use聽聽
[497]
that referral link down below and you'll get聽
five dollars free. Next up, check out my video聽聽
[502]
about alternatives to Venmo for teenagers.聽
I'm gonna put the link right here for you.
