Welcome to the Here’s My Story channel.
[2]
I’m Sam.
[3]
I’ll give a short summary to those of you
[5]
who haven’t seen the first episode of this story yet.
[8]
If you’d like to watch the first episode in full,
[10]

[12]
My stepdad is a gambling addict.
[14]
He borrowed ten thousand dollars from a casino owner.
[17]
He couldn’t pay it back, so the mob came after him.
[19]
He didn’t just put his own life in danger,
[21]
but mine and my mom’s too.
[23]
I told my best-friend Pete all about it, and he decided to tell me a secret.
[27]
It turns out Pete comes from a family of billionaires.
[30]
He took me to their mansion.
[32]
When he showed me his backyard,
[33]
I found out where their fortune comes from:
[36]
ā€œMoney trees!ā€
[37]
Pete gave me a ā€˜money tree seed.’
[39]
He said to me, ā€œPlant this in the ground.
[41]
Wait for thirty days.
[42]
You can pay off your stepdad’s debt
[44]
with the money you harvest from the tree.ā€
[46]
I planted the seed in our backyard, somewhere out of sight.
[49]
But on the night the tree began to blossom full of one-dollar bills,
[53]
my stepdad caught me.
[54]
That covers last episode.
[56]
Now I’ll tell you the rest of my story.
[58]
My stepdad picked one of the one-dollar bills from the money tree.
[62]
He stared at it in shock.
[63]
ā€œMoney grows on this tree?
[65]
How is that even possible?
[67]
Tell me how!ā€ he screamed.
[69]
He had caught me off-guard.
[71]
I was in no shape to lie to him.
[73]
ā€œYes, this is a money tree.
[75]
Don’t pick from it anymore.
[76]
It’s only been ten days since I planted it.
[79]
That’s why you see those one-dollar bills on the tree.
[82]
In ten more days, those one-dollar bills will become ten-dollar bills.
[86]
In twenty days, they will all turn into hundred-dollar bills.
[89]
You can then pay off your debt with the twenty thousand dollars
[92]
we will end up harvesting in total.ā€
[94]
My stepdad Keith was looking at me in disbelief.
[97]
ā€œWhere did you get this seed?ā€
[98]
ā€œI can’t tell you that.
[100]
But know that we only have this one seed.
[103]
This is our only chance to pay off your debt,ā€ I replied.
[106]
Keith looked at the money on the tree.
[108]
His eyes lit up.
[109]
ā€œThis is my house, so this is my tree too.ā€
[113]
He paused for a tense moment, ā€œI’ll wait ten days.
[116]
We’ll see if those ones on my tree turn to tens.
[120]
If you’re lying to me, boy,
[121]
both you and your mom are out of my house for good!ā€
[125]
I could only imagine the evil things
[126]
my stepdadwas capable of.
[128]
I had no choice but to go along with whatever he said.
[131]
The next day, I told my mom what happened.
[133]
Naturally, she didn’t believe me.
[135]
I went to the backyard to show her the money tree.
[138]
My stepdad was there sitting in a camp chair,
[141]
drunk with happiness and greed, watching the tree.
[144]
He stood up when he saw us.
[146]
ā€œLooks like dreams do come true.
[148]
I just hope I never wake up.
[150]
This tree’s going to make me a wealthy man.ā€
[154]
he said, laughing out loud.
[156]
Ten days passed.
[158]
When I woke up that morning,
[159]
I was so excited that I jumped out of bed.
[162]
When I went to look at the tree, I was shocked.
[164]
The one-dollar bills should have transformed into ten-dollar bills,
[167]
but there was no money on the money tree at all!
[170]
I ran inside.
[171]
My stepdad sat counting all the money
[173]
he’d collected from the tree on the kitchen table.
[176]
He was in a good mood.
[177]
ā€œYou were right.
[178]
I picked a hundred and ninety nine ten-dollar bills!ā€
[182]
he said holding a single bill up to the light.
[184]
ā€œLook at this!
[185]
I still can’t believe this grew on a tree!ā€
[188]
I was so mad at him.
[190]
ā€œWhy did you harvest them before they turned into hundred dollar bills?ā€
[194]
He carefully collected a fat stack of bills,
[196]
and stuffed them in a small pocket of his satchel.
[198]
ā€œThere’s something I need to do.
[200]
And I needed some money to be able to do it.
[202]
So I got some from my tree.
[205]
It’ll grow more anyway.ā€
[206]
I still couldn’t figure out what he was planning to do.
[209]
ā€œDidn’t the casino boss give you only a month?
[212]
How are you going to pay off your debt to them now?ā€
[215]
The pocket in my stepdad’s bag bulged crudely,
[218]
barley holding the wad of money inside.
[221]
ā€œWhat is this, an interrogation?ā€ he snapped.
[224]
ā€œEnough!
[225]
It’s my tree!
[226]
I can harvest my money whenever I want.
[228]
I don’t need your permission!ā€
[230]
His shouts echoed through the kitchen as he stormed off.
[233]
He obviously had a plan and that’s why he’d collected the money so early.
[238]
I knew Keith wasn’t stupid.
[240]
He was definitely after something.
[242]
But I couldn’t figure out what that was.
[244]
I decided that I had to talk to Pete at once.
[246]
When I called Pete, he was just as shocked
[249]
that my step dad had harvested the bills too soon.
[252]
ā€œBro, do you want to come to my place?
[254]
I’m sending the driver over now.
[256]
There was something that I was hesitant to do before,
[259]
but I think now is the time to do it,ā€ he said.
[261]
I realized what Pete had meant
[263]
when I arrived at his family’s estate.
[265]
He was waiting for me at his doorstep accompanied by someone
[268]
I had never met before.
[270]
The guy next to him smiled, and held out his hand.
[273]
ā€œVery nice to meet you, young man.
[276]
I’m Pete’s dad.
[277]
My son always talks about you.
[279]
But I didn’t know he’d given you a money tree seed.
[282]
The news from Pete this morning was quite a surprise, to be honest!ā€
[285]
Meanwhile, Pete was staring at his feet, a guilty look on his face.
[289]
Pete’s dad gestured towards the door.
[291]
Pete rushed inside, and I followed.
[294]
After a long walk through several spacious rooms,
[297]
we arrived in a grand hall.
[299]
Pete’s dad told us to sit, the tension hung heavily in the room.
[304]
Pete’s dad took a deep breath.
[306]
ā€œThe money trees were supposed to stay a secret.
[308]
I’ll be honest.
[310]
I’m very disappointed by my son’s actions.
[312]
On the other hand, I’m aware of how much he cares for you.
[315]
As you can see, Pete takes after me.
[318]
I was often bullied at school for my short stature, as well.
[321]
Unfortunately,
[322]
I didn’t have a friend like you
[324]
who could have protected me,
[325]
so I understand Pete’s motive.
[327]
If I were in his shoes,
[329]
I would’ve wanted to help my best friend, too.ā€
[332]
Pete was relieved.
[333]
He looked at his dad with a smile on his face,
[335]
a smile his dad returned.
[337]
Pete’s dad continued, worry in his voice.
[340]
ā€œIf that were the only issue, everything would be fine.
[343]
But regrettably, it sounds like things got out of hand.
[346]
I’m sure your mother also means well, so I trust her.
[350]
However, the fact that your stepdad knows about the money tree
[354]
is a huge problem
[355]
so I have an idea to fix it.
[356]
The staff here knows about the money trees,
[359]
but they’ve each signed a non-disclosure agreement
[361]
which prevents them from talking about it.
[363]
I’m going to offer your stepdad ten million dollars in exchange
[367]
for your money tree
[368]
on the condition that he signs the same agreement.
[371]
Will you please take me to him?ā€
[373]
Pete’s dad had found a reasonable solution.
[375]
That amount was far more than Keith could ever harvest
[378]
from a single money tree in his remaining lifetime.
[381]
We got in the car and drove off.
[383]
When we made it to our house, we were in for a surprise.
[387]
Inside, we found my mom crying.
[389]
She held me close.
[390]
Between sobs, she managed to say, ā€œSam, your step dad left.
[394]
I don’t care about that.
[395]
But he took the money tree with him.ā€
[397]
I didn’t get it.
[399]
We went out to the backyard.
[401]
There was a huge hole where the tree had been.
[404]
Pete’s dad asked, ā€œPlease tell us what happened?ā€
[408]
This was my mom’s first time meeting Pete’s dad.
[411]
She looked at me hesitantly.
[412]
ā€œMom, you can tell him everything.
[414]
Pete’s dad created the money trees,ā€ I said reassuring her.
[418]
ā€œI was at work.
[419]
Our next-door neighbor called,
[421]
upset about the noise coming from our backyard.
[423]
I figured something was up, so I immediately came home.
[426]
Keith had the tree removed with a back-hoe.
[429]
They were loading it into the truck bed when I arrived.
[432]
I asked him what he was doing.
[433]
ā€˜We’re done!’ he shouted, ā€˜Don’t look for me.’
[437]
ā€˜To hell with you, then!’
[438]
I shouted back,
[439]
ā€˜But that tree doesn’t belong to you, it belongs to Sam.
[442]
You can’t just take it away,’
[443]
But he didn’t listen.
[445]
I’m so upset that I couldn't stop him.
[447]
Sam was right all along.
[449]
I should never have married that man.ā€
[451]
It finally made sense why Keith had harvested the money so soon.
[455]
He needed it to move the tree somewhere else.
[458]
More importantly,
[459]
it would have been impossible for him to transport a tree full of bills.
[462]
Not if he wanted to keep it hidden.
[465]
I turned to Pete’s dad.
[466]
ā€œWhat do we do now?ā€
[467]
I asked.
[468]
Pete and his dad looked at each other for a few moments,
[471]
and burst out laughing.
[473]
My mom and I were flabbergast.
[475]
We had no idea what was so funny.
[478]
ā€œWe don’t need to do anything,ā€ Pete’s dad said.
[481]
ā€œIt seems as though your stepdad has resolved the problem all by himself.ā€
[485]
When he realized we had no clue what he was saying,
[489]
he began to explain.
[490]
ā€œA money plant seed can only grow where it’s planted.
[494]
You can’t transplant it.
[495]
It’s an issue I am still working on I simply can’t figure out.
[499]
If you disturb the seed even a day after planting,
[502]
the tree stops developing.
[504]
Your stepdad is in for a real disappointment.
[507]
That tree will never grow bills again.
[510]
It’s not a money tree anymore.
[511]
It may as well be a husk of driftwood!ā€
[514]
ā€œThat explains the laughter," I said,
[516]
"but he can still tell people that it was a money tree.
[519]
Wouldn’t that be a problem for you?ā€
[521]
Pete’s dad put his hand on my shoulder.
[523]
ā€œNo problem at all because no one would ever believe him.
[527]
Would you have believed that a money tree existed
[529]
if you hadn’t seen it for yourself?
[531]
If your step dad tells anyone that tree had once been full of bills,
[535]
I can assure you
[535]
that they’d laugh harder than us.ā€
[537]
Then he turned to my mom.
[539]
ā€œI’m sure your husband will come back here
[541]
once he figures out the tree is not growing any money.
[544]
You can come with us if you like.
[545]
Our home is certainly big enough.
[547]
My wife will be happy to host the two of you,ā€ he said.
[550]
We stayed with Pete and his family for a while,
[553]
until Pete’s dad bought a house, and gifted us two money tree seeds.
[557]
We’ve been harvesting forty thousand dollars from our money trees every month.
[561]
I’m a millionaire now.
[562]
And I owe this to my dear friend, Pete.
[564]
We hadn’t heard from my step dad since.
[567]
We’d forgotten about him until one night I randomly came across him on TV.
[571]
The police had busted an illegal gambling ring.
[574]
Keith was one of several witnesses.
[576]
One of the reporters held a mic to Keith and asked him
[579]
what he was doing at the casino.
[580]
ā€œI owed a pretty big debt to the owner.
[583]
When I couldn’t come up with it,
[585]
I was forced to work with him for ten years.
[587]
I’ve been a janitor here ever since then,ā€ he replied.
[590]
It turns out all this time he had been paying off his debt
[593]
to the mob by working as a custodian.
[595]
To be honest, I didn’t feel sorry for him.
[598]
Keith was a victim of his own greed,
[600]
responsible and deserving of everything that happened to him.
