I Saved $20,000 馃挵 And Quit My Full-Time Job To Be "Funemployed" 馃帹馃帀 For A Year - YouTube

Channel: Evelyn From The Internets

[0]
hey you brought it to me Evelyn let's go
[1]
ahead and a some cues about being
[4]
funemployed this video will answer those
[13]
frequently asked questions from the
[15]
comment section of my funemployed create
[17]
a video this video will not spill any
[20]
sort of beverage about my former place
[24]
of employment like this internet cousin
[26]
had wished you go ahead and be
[29]
unhireable for being messy on the
[31]
internet but I shan't first I want to
[34]
define what funemployed means to me
[37]
because I noticed a lot of you from the
[39]
comments thought that funemployed was
[42]
synonymous with being a hashtag
[44]
influencer an entrepreneur being
[47]
self-employed
[48]
which ended up happening because I don't
[51]
know how to not work but that was never
[53]
the intention funemployed simply means
[56]
unemployed on purpose hence the fun
[60]
that's it I saw I thought it is my one
[64]
and only goal was to quit my full-time
[67]
job and not have to immediately look for
[70]
another one unemployed next I want to go
[77]
into a little bit of my background and
[79]
the privileges I have that made giving
[82]
up gainful employment an option for me
[85]
number one I worked one salaried
[89]
full-time job that paid me enough that I
[92]
had disposable income I wasn't living
[95]
paycheck to paycheck and at the end of
[98]
the month
[98]
after all my bills were paid for I had
[100]
money left over number two although my
[104]
job was stressful Oh
[106]
stressful at times like all jobs are
[109]
once that clock hit five or really 6:00
[112]
in the p.m. I went home I had manageable
[116]
and ethical working hours so that I
[118]
could go home every evening and work on
[120]
side hustles if I wanted to I always
[123]
tell people that I worked a 9 to 5 and a
[125]
5 to 2 a.m.
[126]
number three I have a college degree and
[128]
since a lot of jobs require you to be
[130]
college educated even
[132]
to apply I felt a lot more comfortable
[134]
giving up this job and just finding
[137]
another one later gotta be fun employed
[140]
first it's the goal number four I have
[143]
access to things like a car Internet I
[147]
have an iPhone with the internet on it
[149]
number five I'm not married and I'm
[153]
there no kids all right so my decisions
[156]
only affected me at number six I have
[160]
parents that with a lot of questioning
[162]
and stipulations would let me move back
[165]
home I had zero intention of doing that
[169]
but just knowing that's an option even
[172]
if you think that option means failure
[175]
if worse comes to worse just alleviate
[179]
so much stress running in the back of
[181]
your mind it is truly a privilege to
[183]
know you have a place to lay your head
[185]
at night since my definition of fun
[190]
employment meant to not work and
[192]
essentially not make any more cash that
[195]
meant I had to live off money I had
[197]
saved with about five years of income
[200]
from side hustles and saving my
[202]
disposable income from my full-time jobs
[204]
paycheck combined with a little bit a
[207]
little bit of money left over from my
[209]
youtube grant I was able to save about
[212]
twenty thousand dollars I think it's
[215]
important to note and a lot of you had
[217]
asked in that video when I decided to
[220]
quit my job I toyed with the idea you
[223]
know lose little drop in my brain brain
[226]
bucket about a year out so at the top of
[231]
2017 it wasn't about four months out
[235]
from when I actually turned in my two
[238]
weeks notice and I said oh okay this
[241]
bucket of money is going to be used for
[244]
my fun employment endeavor so that means
[247]
four years since 2012 every paycheck
[251]
from YouTube Adsense every PayPal
[256]
invoice from a time I edited someone's
[259]
video or filmed someone's video every
[262]
hashtag sponsored piece
[264]
content that I really only recently
[266]
started doing in the scheme of my 10
[269]
year YouTube existence went into a
[273]
separate baking account that did not
[275]
have a debit card attached what I'm
[279]
trying to communicate is that for years
[281]
I had no idea what I was saving the
[284]
money for it could have been a down
[286]
payment on a house I could have saved up
[290]
to go to grad school what is a year out
[293]
half of the year of grad school Jesus I
[296]
could have been had paid my undergrad
[298]
student loans off it could have been
[300]
used to move out of Texas but it wasn't
[303]
until about August 2017 that I decided
[307]
that this money was going to be used to
[310]
support me in the amount of time I
[312]
wasn't going to be working so initially
[315]
I wanted to take maybe three months off
[317]
you know give myself a summer vacation
[320]
again cute but then I really realized
[324]
that this is probably the only time in
[327]
my life that I will be able to do
[331]
something like this so I decided to give
[333]
myself a full year why and so what that
[336]
meant is that in addition to saving
[339]
money I had to reduce my costs and sure
[344]
I went through my bank statements and
[346]
you know try to cut out subscription
[349]
services that I didn't really need you
[351]
know try to reduce my spending you know
[354]
what text makes happy hours you feel me
[356]
but I really and truly the biggest way
[359]
that I cut my expenses was to move out
[361]
of my apartment my rent was about nine
[364]
hundred dollars a month and combined
[367]
with bills I was paying about twelve
[369]
hundred dollars a month to live I lived
[372]
by myself and I loved my apartment you
[375]
know even though we had some issues in
[376]
the past I loved that place but I knew I
[379]
couldn't justify staying there and
[382]
paying $1,200 a month when I ain't got
[384]
no job
[385]
so my friends who have a house had a
[388]
spare room and I now rent that room
[390]
you all are familiar with it by now I
[393]
rent that room for $600 a month flat
[397]
Bessie no extra bills y'all I
[400]
essentially cut my living expenses in
[403]
half so I quit my job I moved out of my
[409]
bachelorette pad and I moved in with my
[412]
friends into their spare room and now
[415]
what was my goal I noticed that some of
[418]
y'all in the comment section of that
[420]
past video assumed that being
[422]
funemployed meant I was renouncing
[425]
nine-to-five life that I had no
[428]
intention of ever working for anybody
[430]
else ever again
[431]
and I never said that BAM never said
[435]
that I loved having health insurance
[438]
which I didn't have during my
[440]
funemployed year I enjoyed contributing
[443]
a little dust of my paycheck to a 401k
[446]
which I had to stop doing when I was fun
[449]
employed and I loved the stability of
[451]
knowing that paycheck don't come through
[453]
hashtag irregardless I never said that I
[457]
never wanted to work for anyone ever
[459]
again I said I'm taking a year off I
[462]
wanted to travel I wanted to participate
[465]
in some opportunities that I couldn't
[468]
participate in before because I had to
[470]
go to work you can't just abandon your
[472]
job and your team because something cool
[475]
you've been invited to something cool
[476]
and I wanted to use this time to learn
[479]
new skills and be creative again I had a
[482]
note on my iPhone called sabbatical all
[486]
caps it had things like learn to grow
[490]
food visit the national parks in Texas
[494]
go to museums take a screenwriting class
[498]
support peoples events happening in town
[500]
make a family history book yah I
[504]
literally had in that note learn about
[507]
space I made that list in May of 2017
[512]
and what that list showed me is that I
[516]
was so overwhelmingly unfulfilled
[520]
and unchallenged in a way I wasn't
[523]
learning or doing anything new and for a
[527]
kid who grew up turning up at the
[529]
Scholastic Book Fair for the kid who
[531]
spent summer vacations learning to code
[534]
or who would buy a book of writing
[536]
prompts for the kid who would take
[539]
pictures with her Barbie camera and
[542]
collect sticks and rocks and big old
[545]
magnolia leaves I wasn't feeding my
[548]
curious and creative self and a lot of
[551]
the things on that note made me realize
[555]
I I needed contact with the physical
[557]
world I was making so much stuff for the
[560]
Internet and I didn't really have any
[562]
tangible I feel like I had no skills
[565]
here I'm saying I had no skills I can't
[568]
go to Basel what we don't doing the
[570]
apocalypse come you need spices you need
[572]
herbs it reminded me of a lot of y'all's
[575]
comments from that video in the comments
[577]
below let me know two things you'd
[579]
finally get to do if you were
[582]
funemployed
[583]
and the responses honestly we're kind of
[586]
sad because y'all are not asking for a
[589]
lot I don't think I'm asking for a lot
[592]
capitalism has tricked us into thinking
[594]
that desiring a better life a more
[597]
creative life a more well-rested life if
[600]
somehow Bujji when really you should be
[603]
asking yourself why do we live in a
[605]
world in which someone feels they don't
[608]
have time to put food on the table and
[610]
hang out with their offspring we didn't
[614]
make that world we just live in it my
[616]
goal was to create an environment in
[618]
which I could slow down and learn things
[621]
again and on top of that I think there's
[624]
in general just a stigma around creative
[626]
people but it's creative people who make
[629]
the TV shows you watch and the music you
[631]
listen to authors go off into woods to
[636]
write that book but you want to read and
[638]
even if you never produce a piece of
[641]
entertainment or something for someone
[642]
else to enjoy ever in your life
[645]
creativity and curiosity play help you
[648]
be a better human being it is a shame
[651]
that you have to have a lot
[653]
of privilege and a level of access and
[656]
order to strategize and kind of create
[659]
that sort of life plan for yourself to
[662]
take time off but I think everybody on
[665]
God's green earth deserves the right to
[669]
a full-bodied well-rounded life and that
[674]
includes you so anyway that's what I
[676]
wanted to do with my funemployed year
[678]
after the year was up I always planned
[681]
on becoming a freelancer and working
[684]
with other teams on a project basis so
[687]
that I could still have some sort of
[688]
flexibility in my life but also make
[691]
money again I wasn't opposed and I'm
[693]
still opposed to having a full-time job
[695]
but low-key I feel like I would need to
[699]
leave Texas in order to truly level up
[702]
in the way I need my career to level up
[706]
my parents would gay um well a lot of
[712]
y'all asked what my parents thought
[714]
about this whole thing
[716]
and truth be told I'm not like a 19 year
[722]
old trying to take a gap year I was 27
[729]
years old so honestly they didn't ask
[732]
much yeah I'm saying they have an adult
[735]
child apparently I'm an adult child but
[738]
my dad asked me one question he asked me
[741]
Evelyn
[742]
what do you need from me and I thanked
[745]
him you know I'm saying for caring and
[747]
asking and I told him you know pops I
[750]
need you to trust me and trust me when I
[755]
say I'm okay and no and this is me
[758]
telling you that the second I'm not okay
[760]
I will let you know and I think that did
[763]
a lot for him because parents the good
[766]
ones just want to know that their kids
[768]
all right
[769]
the kids all right and I once I am one
[773]
of the most frequently asked questions
[775]
on that video was how I was able to
[777]
travel so much
[780]
during my funemployed year and that
[782]
leads me to address the reality of my
[785]
funemployed year which has ended your
[788]
girl got a job
[790]
jobs multiple during my funemployed year
[794]
I actually ended up working so the
[797]
overwhelming majority of my travel was
[800]
work-related or related to being from
[803]
the Internet's the biggest expense for
[806]
travelling I found is the plane ticket
[808]
and a lot of times that was paid for by
[811]
whatever organization was flying me out
[813]
so for example let's take VidCon VidCon
[816]
takes place in Anaheim California they
[820]
booked my ticket but I asked them
[822]
instead of making me immediately come
[824]
back home to Texas while she you know
[826]
book my return flight for like two weeks
[828]
out and so that gave me time to visit
[832]
people I already knew in different parts
[834]
of California essentially I turned one
[836]
plane ticket into two extra trips a lot
[840]
of y'all asked when is the best time to
[843]
be funemployed and the truth of the
[845]
matter is that's a question that I
[847]
cannot answer for you because I don't
[850]
know how your life is set up you know
[852]
who you have to provide for I don't know
[855]
your situation in life your struggle
[857]
your story money timing that's only
[861]
something you can know and it's a very
[864]
personal decision and unfortunately a
[868]
luxury that not everyone has asked for
[871]
me I low key i key didn't do a lot of
[877]
the things on that on that iphone note
[880]
titled sabbatical all caps which is
[884]
another video for another day um got two
[888]
jobs right now I also have a year's
[890]
worth of lessons learned about how sucky
[894]
it is that our self-worth is often tied
[897]
to our productivity a lot of lessons
[900]
learned about being an influencer versus
[904]
a creator how easy it is to get caught
[908]
in the in the
[910]
hamster wheel of promoting someone
[912]
else's stuff instead of making your own
[916]
got-damn stuff lessons about
[919]
communicating with friends better and
[922]
collaborators better and not speaking up
[927]
for yourself myself I don't know your
[928]
life and not saying yes to things just
[932]
because you have the time now and a
[934]
bunch of stuff we can talk about later
[936]
but this video is long enough I just
[938]
want to thank all of y'all who spoke
[941]
life into me in the comments section of
[943]
that video and in all ways in all places
[946]
on the internets i really appreciate
[949]
those thoughtful kind comments
[953]
encouraging words and if you're
[955]
interested in understanding more about
[958]
this topic i urge you to go back and
[961]
read the comments of that video there's
[965]
like 700 comments alright and people
[967]
aren't sharing their fun employment
[969]
stories or their obstacles maybe you can
[973]
find someone who has a similar life
[975]
situation to you and i never take it for
[977]
granted that y'all continue to share
[979]
your stories with me shared pieces of
[981]
yourself with me it makes me feel a
[983]
whole lot more comfortable about cutting
[985]
the camera on and sharing myself with
[988]
you right back in the comments below if
[990]
I missed anything
[991]
I let you girl and I will see you on the
[994]
internet somewhere bye
