I've never felt this way before - $60 VR GLOVES! - YouTube

Channel: unknown

[0]
- I know Kung Fu.
[3]
Oh crap, go ahead and cut.
[6]
In spite of all the progress in VR
[7]
over the last 10 years
[9]
there's still one fatal flaw
[11]
breaking the immersion.
[12]
No matter what I do, even with the knuckles controllers
[16]
where I can open my hands entirely,
[17]
I am always acutely aware
[20]
that I'm just a guy in my living room,
[22]
in my underwear, waving around plastic fallacies.
[25]
Now there are companies out there
[27]
that make finger tracking glove style controllers,
[29]
but they cost anywhere
[31]
from $100 to literally $1000
[33]
to purchase.
[34]
But one man has risen, not high mind you
[37]
and said that's too much.
[40]
And he has made a product that
[42]
you can make for yourself for just $60,
[46]
$60 really?
[47]
- Yeah.
[48]
- And that's a thumbs up.
[49]
- Yes,
[50]
- I get it.
[51]
That's good.
[52]
You know what else is good?
[52]
Our sponsor.
[53]
- Build Redux.
[54]
Build Redux offers competitive pricing compared
[56]
to building a PC yourself.
[57]
Their website makes it easy to configure your build
[59]
alongside their helpful support guide,
[61]
head to buildredux.com/linus
[64]
and start creating your PC today.
[66]
- With me today,
[67]
I have two exciting things.
[69]
The Lucid glove prototype 4
[70]
which does things I have just never seen before.
[73]
It offers hand presence in VR
[75]
through the use of a bolted on vibe tracker
[78]
or Oculus quest, two controller.
[80]
And it actually offers not only finger awareness
[85]
but through the use of servos tied
[88]
to strings it offers you the ability
[91]
to grasps items in VR and feel force feedback
[95]
on your individual fingers.
[98]
The other thing I have,
[98]
is it's creator Lucas.
[100]
- Hello
[102]
- Lucas, talk to me,
[103]
start with why is it for sex things?
[106]
- It's primarily right now
[107]
for games for VR games,
[109]
- Sex games.
[111]
- For fun games
[112]
- Are sex games fun?
[115]
(Lucas chuckles)
[116]
Why do we want hands in VR?
[118]
- Well, so a big part of being able
[119]
to interact with objects in games
[121]
is being able to go and actually grasp them.
[123]
But so when you're actually holding
[124]
a controller in your hand
[125]
you're just grasping the same shape
[127]
every single time of this controller.
[128]
But so now what you can do is use your hands
[131]
as if there was nothing in them
[132]
and then actually be able to pick things up
[134]
and interact with them.
[134]
- Now you've clearly gone through multiple revisions
[137]
to get to the stage you're at today.
[138]
Do you wanna talk us through it a little bit
[140]
before we get into the crazy
[141]
demo we're about to do.
[142]
- So this is pretty rough.
[145]
It didn't really survive the shipping.
[146]
This was prototype one.
[148]
This was the one that went viral on TikTok
[150]
and it broke a lot
[151]
but it worked well enough at the time
[153]
to get, you know kind of the information
[155]
that I needed to make him better.
[156]
- You've gone from sort of a parallel aligned spool
[161]
to a perpendicular aligned spool.
[163]
You've got, what's clearly a much more robust system
[167]
for wire management or line management.
[171]
What else have you learnt?
[172]
- So moving on to prototype two,
[173]
mainly this is the first one
[175]
that didn't catch on fire,
[177]
but on top of that, this one was much better
[179]
at actually fitting on your hand
[181]
and staying there.
[182]
And this is the first time I actually
[184]
had it working inside of steam VR games
[185]
- [Linus] Prototype three.
[186]
- This is when I started messing around
[187]
with adding wireless capabilities to it,
[189]
getting the finger tracking really consistent
[191]
and getting it a lot more comfortable.
[193]
- And prototype four.
[194]
- This is the one that added haptic support as well
[197]
as much better my outing for everything
[199]
like the controllers
[200]
so that it stays all in one piece.
[202]
- And it's still wireless.
[203]
I'm assuming the battery is in here.
[205]
- No.
[206]
The battery is external
[207]
and we're gonna be using this
[208]
to power it for now.
[209]
- So what is in here?
[211]
- In there, that is actually all
[212]
of the wiring in order
[214]
to get this board to connect
[216]
to all of the rest of it.
[218]
A lot of it could be done without it
[220]
but I did it this way.
[220]
So it's easier to switch out parts
[222]
and test things.
[223]
- Got it.
[224]
And this is the emergency stop button, I suppose.
[225]
- That is the calibration button
[226]
that we're gonna use to
[227]
make it so that it actually matches your hand.
[228]
- Is it okay I just pressed that?
[230]
- Yeah, you're fine.
[231]
- I like big red buttons.
[234]
Let's go try it.
[235]
Wow. Lucas, this feels just like a plan.
[238]
I could swear I'm hold an apple.
[240]
And if you told me that this
[242]
was an actual genuine alpaca blend pillow
[245]
from Ittstore.com.
[246]
I believe you.
[247]
- All right.
[248]
So we are gonna hook you up here
[250]
and we're just gonna test all the motors on your fingers.
[253]
So you should feel resistance in...
[254]
- Oh, I definitely do.
[255]
- Okay, great.
[256]
Great. And then that's off.
[258]
That's on.
[259]
- Okay, that it's definitely on,
[261]
you know what it feels like?
[262]
It feels like the opposite
[264]
of like, have you ever had someone
[266]
like push on your tendons? - Yeah.
[268]
And close your hand.
[269]
It feels like the opposite of that.
[271]
Like it's holding my fingers open, you know?
[274]
Okay.
[275]
But I can't move them at all right.
[276]
- That's means there's a big thing in your hand.
[279]
- Got it.
[280]
So I'm holding like a big
[282]
- Choose your words, carefully.
[284]
- Grapefruit, basketball, cantaloupe.
[287]
Yeah, cantaloupe.
[288]
I'm holding a big cantaloupe.
[291]
Yvonne, if you're watching
[292]
it was definitely a Cantaloupe.
[295]
- All right.
[296]
Now let's put it into Bluetooth mode
[297]
and we will hook it up on the computer.
[300]
- Okay.
[301]
- So are you in VR?
[302]
- I am in VR.
[303]
- What do you see on your left hand?
[304]
- VR?
[305]
- Do you don't see it left hand?
[306]
- Oh, no, I don't see the left hand.
[307]
- So we're gonna turn on the vibe tracker.
[309]
Oh
[310]
- Oh, whoa.
[311]
- [Lucas] It started a little.
[312]
(Linus shouting)
[313]
- Whoa.
[315]
There's one not working.
[315]
That's really, really unfortunate you guys.
[318]
Oh there it is.
[319]
Now this, how has just open and closed?
[323]
That's it.
[324]
There's touch sensors on the controller,
[326]
but this that is so crazy.
[330]
Okay, what's next?
[331]
- [Lucas] Okay.
[332]
And now try to grab a cube
[335]
and see how it feels.
[336]
- [Linus] A Cube?
[337]
- [Lucas] Or anything.
[339]
- Geez.
[341]
(lively music)
[342]
Okay.
[343]
So as I get into range, the servos kick in.
[345]
- [Lucas] That's to prevent latency
[348]
in actually grabbing it.
[350]
- Okay. Geez.
[354]
- [Lucas] Are you okay?
[354]
- Yeah, I'm fine.
[356]
It just tripped me out a little bit.
[358]
Like I finally managed to pick it up
[360]
and it just like Oh, it like, whoa.
[362]
Oh, keep, where are you?
[370]
Oh, I have your balls in my hands.
[375]
What is your plan?
[376]
- I really wanna do anything I can do
[378]
to make these gloves as accessible as possible.
[380]
Right now, the best way I can do that is
[382]
by open sourcing the project
[383]
and having people build it themselves.
[385]
But at some point
[386]
if there's a way that I can make
[388]
the gloves accessible
[389]
to people who don't have a 3D printer
[391]
or can't build their own gloves,
[392]
then I really, you know
[393]
at some point definitely wanna go down that route.
[395]
- So you'd say you're weeks away
[397]
from final product shipping.
[399]
- Oh yeah.
[399]
This one might only work
[400]
for like 5 seconds cause it's not as built.
[402]
- But it'll be the best 5 seconds of Linus life.
[406]
I knew it was a sex thing.
[409]
Whoa.
[410]
Are you getting this Brandon?
[411]
- [Brandon] Yep.
[412]
That's fricking awesome.
[414]
Okay, the left one's a little
[415]
Yeah, it's doing stuff.
[418]
But the right one is like, whoa,
[422]
look at that.
[424]
Can you see this?
[426]
That's crazy.
[429]
Whoa.
[430]
That, Hey, that's cool.
[436]
It's thin.
[438]
Okay.
[440]
That is next level.
[445]
Do you have a plan to Debulkify it a bit?
[448]
- [Lucas] Yeah, that's actually my next prototype.
[450]
My prototype five.
[452]
I'm planning on shrinking it as much
[454]
as I can maybe moving some stuff up the arm
[455]
and also trying to make it as durable
[458]
and reliable as I can.
[458]
- Okay. Cool.
[460]
(Linus chuckling)
[463]
What get over here.
[465]
Get, get, oh,
[468]
that's so cool.
[471]
I can turn dials.
[473]
This thing is absolutely nerdy.
[477]
I am very looking forward
[479]
to seeing the next prototype
[481]
which is apparently gonna be smaller,
[483]
more durable.
[484]
And you were saying people
[485]
in the community have even built ones
[486]
that are like better than yours.
[490]
- Totally, I mean
[491]
people have taken this kind
[492]
of reference design
[493]
and modeled their own versions off of it.
[494]
- That is absolutely incredible.
[497]
And you're still in school, I guess.
[498]
- Yeah.
[499]
- What was I doing at your age?
[501]
A lot of counterstrike source
[504]
and I'm not even good at it.
