HOW TO: Setup a Home Music Studio for Beginners (2022) - YouTube
Channel: Edward Smith
[3]
hey guys welcome back to another video
[6]
and today i want to show you guys how to
[8]
set up your very own home music studio
[11]
step by step i'm going to take you
[14]
through what equipment you need with the
[15]
ui producer or singer songwriter the
[18]
best options for your budget and how to
[21]
get it all connected so you can get
[22]
started straight away
[29]
so before we jump into this home studio
[31]
setup if you haven't already subscribed
[33]
to this youtube channel and you watch my
[35]
content and you like my content please
[37]
do so and give this video a thumbs up as
[39]
i do have a goal of reaching a hundred
[41]
thousand subscribers by the end of this
[43]
year and there's absolutely no way i can
[45]
do that without you so if you can
[47]
subscribe and you haven't already i
[48]
would really appreciate it secondly if
[50]
you end up being interested in any of
[52]
the equipment i run through in today's
[54]
video i will leave some links down in
[55]
the description below but without any
[57]
further ado let's get straight into
[58]
setting up our very own home music
[61]
studio
[63]
[Applause]
[67]
[Music]
[68]
[Applause]
[76]
[Music]
[95]
so the first thing you're going to need
[96]
to set up your very own home music
[98]
studio is a computer whether it is a
[100]
laptop or a desktop is up to you whether
[103]
it is a mac or a windows type computer
[105]
is also up to you but nowadays in 2022
[108]
these machines are so so powerful that
[110]
the biggest hits in the world are being
[112]
made in an apartment in a hotel room on
[115]
a laptop and just trying to get the best
[118]
laptop you possibly can is so so
[120]
important because it is the centerpiece
[122]
of everything and it's literally the
[123]
start and the end of making a good song
[126]
when it comes to picking a desktop or
[127]
laptop for music production the three
[129]
key things you want to focus on is
[131]
getting as much ram as possible as much
[133]
storage as you possibly can and the best
[136]
processing power if you're on a budget
[138]
the minimum amount of ram that you're
[139]
looking for is around 8 gigabytes you're
[141]
looking for at least 500 gigabytes of
[144]
hard drive space and the best processing
[146]
power you possibly can and on screen i
[148]
have quite a few cool budget options
[150]
that you can go for like i mentioned
[151]
earlier i will leave the links down in
[153]
the description below if you want to go
[154]
check afterwards but these laptops are
[156]
really really good if you're starting
[158]
out if you are not on a tight budget
[160]
like i said you are trying to get the
[162]
most amount of ram you possibly can
[164]
storage and processing power and at the
[166]
moment the current laptops i'm showing
[168]
you right now are the best of the best
[170]
because they really give you a lot in
[172]
those specific categories remember when
[174]
it comes to the computer you get for
[175]
your home studio setup it is the
[177]
centerpiece and foundation of everything
[179]
so if you do cheap out you are gonna
[182]
struggle in the long run the second
[184]
thing you need for your home music
[185]
studio setup is a music production
[187]
software and this is just as important
[190]
as your laptop because without the music
[192]
production software you can't make music
[194]
anyway so they do go hand in hand and
[196]
when it comes to getting a good music
[198]
production software there are quite a
[200]
few out there that are really the most
[202]
popular and most used but when it comes
[204]
to which one is better than another it
[206]
is all about preference the most popular
[208]
music production softwares out there
[210]
consist of pro tools ableton live fl
[213]
studio logic pro cubase reaper even
[216]
studio one all of these softwares come
[218]
at a pretty high price so if you're on a
[220]
tight budget try and get the entry-level
[222]
versions of that software so that when
[224]
you progress in future you can always
[226]
upgrade to the pro version and have
[228]
everything you need so now that you have
[230]
your laptop and your music production
[232]
software you can literally start making
[234]
music you don't really need all the
[236]
equipment to actually start making a
[238]
song and learning your software and
[239]
doing all those kinds of things but when
[241]
it comes to making the whole process a
[242]
little bit more creative and fun and
[245]
just a lot more efficient getting a few
[247]
pieces of quality equipment can really
[249]
make a big difference and one piece of
[252]
studio gear that really makes a
[253]
difference is an audio interface for
[256]
those of you that don't know what an
[257]
audio interface is it's the middle man
[259]
between your computer and any microphone
[262]
or instrument you want to connect audio
[264]
interfaces come in so many different
[265]
shapes and sizes and at the end of the
[267]
day it's all about finding the right one
[269]
for your specific needs in my opinion
[271]
the best audio interface to go for if
[273]
you're starting out and the most popular
[275]
in most home studios is a usb connecting
[278]
audio interface to get started you
[280]
literally plug in the audio interface
[282]
straight into your laptop you download
[284]
the driver off the internet for your
[286]
specific audio interface and you're
[288]
ready to go on screen i have a few pics
[290]
of my favorite audio interfaces
[292]
especially if you're on a tight budget
[295]
and if money isn't really a problem
[296]
regarding an audio interface there are a
[299]
few that are really really good for
[300]
better preamp quality and for more
[303]
inputs depending on your specific needs
[306]
now that we've covered what an audio
[308]
interface is all about i feel it's only
[309]
appropriate to move on to our next piece
[311]
of gear the condenser microphone and for
[314]
those of you that don't know what a
[315]
condenser microphone is it's a
[317]
microphone that picks a very detailed
[319]
quality sound and it's very crispy but
[321]
it does pick up a lot of sound
[323]
everywhere so it's not usually used in a
[325]
live setting it's used in a quiet studio
[327]
environment because it is so so
[329]
sensitive but because it isn't the usual
[332]
microphone it does need 48 volts of
[334]
phantom power and that phantom power is
[337]
only being provided by an audio
[339]
interface other microphones that you see
[342]
on stage don't need an audio interface
[344]
to work because there are dynamic
[345]
microphones but when it comes to a
[347]
condenser microphone you want that
[349]
detail you want that crispiness you want
[351]
that studio quality for a recording an
[353]
audio interface is going to be needed
[355]
for that 48 volts of phantom power as a
[358]
singer-songwriter myself i've tested so
[360]
many different microphones on this
[362]
channel already and on a budget these
[364]
are the picks that i would go for if you
[366]
really want to get the most for the
[368]
money and if you aren't on the tightest
[370]
budget and you have some flexibility
[373]
these microphones are fantastic if you
[375]
want to have a once off microphone that
[377]
you aren't going to be replacing anytime
[379]
soon when it comes to connecting a
[381]
condenser microphone to your music
[383]
studio setup all you have to do is get
[385]
an xlr type cable plug it into the
[388]
microphone and then plug it into your
[389]
audio interface make sure you have that
[392]
48 volts of phantom power switched on
[394]
otherwise the microphone will not work
[396]
especially if it's a condenser
[398]
microphone turn up the input volume of
[400]
the microphone and start recording
[402]
straight away
[407]
now the next piece of studio gear that's
[409]
even more important than a condenser
[411]
microphone with a ui producer or a
[414]
vocalist is a quality pair of studio
[416]
headphones if you don't have money to
[419]
purchase studio monitors or you're
[421]
someone that's in a small environment
[422]
you're on the go you don't have a big
[424]
budget getting a quality pair of studio
[427]
headphones makes a big difference i'm
[429]
personally situated in an apartment
[431]
where i can't constantly be playing
[433]
music loud out of speakers and most of
[435]
the time i have to use my headphones
[437]
when i'm making music when i'm recording
[439]
vocals when i'm tracking and i use these
[442]
so so much that i actually use them more
[444]
than any of the other equipment in my
[446]
studio setup because you are in a home
[448]
studio environment it's really important
[450]
to get the honest truth of what your
[452]
music is sounding like and that's why so
[455]
many pairs of headphones regarding music
[457]
production and mixing and mastering is
[459]
so so much more expensive because those
[461]
headphones are trying to give you the
[463]
flat honest response of what your songs
[465]
sound like so that when you export your
[467]
music it sounds good in the car it
[469]
sounds good in cheap speakers it sounds
[471]
good pretty much everywhere and the
[473]
higher the price of the headphones the
[475]
better they usually are at giving you
[477]
that truth and honest sound especially
[479]
if you're in a home studio type
[481]
environment if you are on a tight budget
[483]
they're definitely quite a few quality
[485]
pairs of headphones out there that will
[486]
do a very good job for you not just for
[489]
music production but also for tracking
[491]
vocals recording and even mixing and
[493]
mastering if you're willing to pay that
[495]
little bit more but remember other than
[498]
your computer and maybe your audio
[499]
interface the next piece of gear you're
[502]
gonna use the most and you're gonna
[503]
depend on a lot is a quality pair of
[506]
headphones to connect your headphones to
[508]
your music studio setup plug them
[510]
straight into your audio interface turn
[512]
up the headphone volume and you're ready
[514]
to go now before we talk about studio
[517]
monitors i first want to talk about
[519]
something that's really important and
[521]
that is acoustic treatment if you're
[523]
recording in a home studio environment
[525]
sound is bouncing all over the place and
[527]
in order to absorb that sound and even
[529]
diffuse it getting good acoustic
[530]
treatment can help you get the best
[532]
result in your music production you're
[534]
mixing later on just help you get a
[536]
great result with your final project
[538]
that especially when it comes to studio
[540]
monitors they aren't going to be able to
[542]
give you the best results that you
[543]
possibly can get if your room isn't
[545]
acoustically treated and if you're
[547]
looking to get good acoustic panels like
[549]
these i will leave them linked down in
[550]
the description below it's very very
[552]
important so make sure you don't neglect
[554]
it now we move on to studio monitors and
[558]
for the beginners out there a pair of
[560]
studio monitors really help you to get a
[562]
flat frequency response when you're
[563]
mixing your song because music
[565]
production is just the creative side of
[567]
things but to get the levels and the
[569]
audio quality right and really put
[570]
everything together and mix it so that
[572]
it sounds professional in its quality a
[575]
good pair of studio monitors really help
[577]
you do that if you're on a tight budget
[579]
looking to get yourself a pair of studio
[581]
monitors and you already have a great
[583]
laptop and audio interface and a pair of
[585]
headphones these studio monitors really
[587]
offer great value at a budget price but
[590]
if you have a little bit more money and
[592]
you're looking to purchase a pair of
[593]
studio monitors that are going to last
[595]
longer and that you aren't going to want
[597]
to replace anytime soon these studio
[599]
monitors really do a good job at also a
[602]
very affordable price and they do get a
[604]
little bit more expensive as you go but
[606]
it's all about your budget and really
[608]
making the smart purchase decision for
[610]
your setup when it comes to connecting
[612]
your studio monitors to your music
[614]
studio setup each individual monitor has
[616]
its own power supply because studio
[618]
monitors are active which means they are
[620]
going to plug in individually into your
[622]
power outlet and then from there you
[624]
plug in your studio monitor straight
[626]
into your audio interface with an xlr or
[629]
trs cable make sure you turn on your
[632]
studio monitors and you turn up the
[633]
volume on your audio interface and
[635]
you're ready to go now the last thing i
[638]
believe you need for a music studio
[640]
setup especially if you are a producer
[643]
it's not necessarily for the singer
[644]
songwriters out there is a nice midi
[647]
keyboard and this isn't necessary you
[650]
can definitely do everything you need to
[652]
do regarding music production mixing and
[654]
mastering and having a music studio
[655]
without one of these but if you are a
[658]
producer the creativity that a midi
[660]
keyboard gives you the fact that you can
[662]
just play the sounds and get the
[663]
melodies and even use your virtual
[665]
instruments in your music production
[667]
software a lot better this is really a
[669]
great purchase to go for there are quite
[671]
a few options out there regarding size
[674]
quality of the keys the features and at
[677]
the end of the day it's all about your
[678]
specific setup how much space you have
[680]
and what you really need if you are just
[683]
a singer songwriter and you're looking
[684]
to maybe play keys and just create your
[686]
own songs you don't really need all the
[689]
features a midi keyboard offers but on
[691]
the other hand if you are a producer and
[693]
you like the drum pads and all the
[694]
features with your pacific software
[696]
going all out is not a bad idea these
[699]
are my current favorites if you're on a
[701]
tight budget and you're looking for a
[703]
small keyboard with a lot of features or
[705]
more keys with a keyboard offering less
[707]
features but if you do have more money
[710]
again and you're not on a tight budget
[711]
here are a few options that offer
[713]
fantastic quality and won't require
[715]
replacing anytime soon when it comes to
[718]
connecting a midi keyboard to your home
[720]
studio setup in most cases midi
[722]
keyboards are also usb connecting they
[725]
plug straight into your laptop or
[727]
computer and you're ready to go so that
[730]
concludes this video of how to set up
[731]
your very own home music studio
[733]
especially if you're a beginner and the
[735]
gear i would go for if i was going for a
[737]
singer songwriter type setup or a
[739]
producer type setup and just a reminder
[741]
that if you're interested in any of this
[742]
equipment links will be down in the
