Should You Trade or Barter Cleaning? Recession Survival Tactics - YouTube
Channel: Angela Brown Cleaning
[0]
should you trade or barter your cleaning
[2]
services that is a really great question
[6]
i'm angela brown and this is ask a house
[8]
cleaner this is a show where you get to
[10]
ask a house cleaning question and i get
[11]
to help you find an answer now if you
[13]
have a question you can go to
[14]
askahousecleaner.com
[16]
and right there in the corner there's a
[18]
blue button when you click on that
[19]
button it sends your message to me right
[21]
here at the show now natalie called in
[24]
and she asked this question
[26]
hi angela my name is natalie and i am a
[30]
homeowner who just is learning from you
[33]
of how to better care for my home and
[34]
teach my kids to do the same
[36]
so thank you
[38]
my question has to do with we basically
[41]
want to do a work study type of a thing
[44]
to pay to let my daughter clean her
[46]
dance studio so she can take more
[49]
classes since we are maxed out on our
[51]
budget we are hopefully going to start
[54]
that in the fall and after watching your
[56]
show i realized that really there's more
[59]
studio than a singular class and so i
[63]
know we need to do a walk through and
[65]
make some kind of an agreement it's
[67]
awkward because
[69]
she's doing us a favor not hiring us at
[72]
the same time we can't clean the whole
[74]
studio for just one class that's way too
[76]
much so
[78]
where do i even start plus is there a
[80]
liability issue we need to be aware of i
[83]
mean it's just like cleaning for a
[85]
friend um the other tricky thing is that
[88]
the owner does not really she's sweet
[90]
she's a wonderful teacher but doesn't
[92]
really communicate well and pass
[94]
information on so we have to be very
[96]
clear from the start of what the
[98]
expectations are so i'm just kind of at
[101]
a loss as to what to do and was hoping
[104]
maybe you could help thanks angela
[107]
right natalie i love this question and i
[109]
love that you're looking into the future
[111]
and that you're planning this well in
[112]
advance because this is going to happen
[114]
this fall i also love the fact that
[116]
you're willing to teach your kids about
[118]
cleaning and in exchange for services
[121]
they need or want like the dances i also
[123]
love the fact that you're not out ruling
[125]
out the dance classes because you said
[127]
they're not in your budget so you're
[129]
very resourceful you're creative it
[131]
sounds like you're a great mom and i
[132]
just love the path that you're on now
[135]
you brought up some really good points
[136]
the words that i heard from you is that
[138]
the dance teacher is a friend you also
[141]
mentioned that she doesn't communicate
[142]
very well you also mentioned that you
[144]
feel like there might be an imbalance of
[146]
how much cleaning is involved versus the
[148]
value of the classes i love where your
[151]
head is with this because you're already
[153]
putting things into place now if your
[155]
daughter ran a cleaning service i would
[157]
advise you against this deal for this
[160]
reason there's going to be a huge
[161]
imbalance really quickly with the level
[164]
of cleaning against the value of the
[166]
dance classes and so if this was a
[169]
regular cleaning business i would advise
[170]
you to go through a barter or trade
[172]
exchange the trade or barter exchange is
[175]
kind of like a clearing house where
[176]
everyone adds their surplus or their
[178]
services or their goods and then
[180]
everybody takes out what they need so
[182]
for sake of an argument if this were a
[185]
business and your daughter were cleaning
[187]
and let's say just for sake of an
[189]
argument that it took four hours to
[190]
clean the studio and each of those hours
[193]
was valued at twenty five dollars each
[195]
that would be one hundred dollars per
[197]
cleaning that your daughter would earn
[198]
from the job now the teacher teaching a
[201]
dance class let's say for sake of an
[202]
argument each of those classes is valued
[205]
at fifty dollars and so she would put in
[207]
her class for the day and that would be
[210]
fifty dollars of value so what happens
[212]
is this you both go to the clearing
[214]
house and then your daughter earns her
[216]
hundred dollars from the teacher who
[217]
pays the hundred dollars for the
[219]
cleaning and then your daughter takes
[221]
out the hundred dollars but she pays 50
[223]
of that back to the teacher and so the
[225]
teacher gets paid for the service but
[227]
then your daughter has an extra fifty
[229]
dollars that she can use at a costume
[231]
studio or a costume store buying
[234]
uniforms and outfits for the dance
[235]
classes or maybe at a hotel when she
[238]
goes on a dance tour or a dance
[240]
extravaganza or something right so she
[243]
can spend those dollars somewhere else
[245]
and so yes she's paying for the dance
[247]
classes with the trade dollars but also
[250]
she's getting other things because it's
[252]
worth more money right so the clearing
[254]
house or the barter trade exchange kind
[256]
of creates a balance between everyone's
[259]
accounts and so one of the things that i
[261]
recommend is that if you're considering
[262]
this absolutely get involved and learn
[264]
how it works and i will leave links in
[266]
the show notes to a couple of trade
[267]
exchanges that i've used in the past and
[269]
that i'm signed up with right now
[271]
because as we go through this what we're
[273]
calling a recession the economy is
[275]
changing and a lot of people are going
[277]
back to barter and trade and so knowing
[279]
how to do it and doing it well is not
[282]
only just a skill but it's something
[284]
that you can use for the rest of your
[285]
life so instead of doing a direct trade
[288]
you're doing an indirect trade by going
[290]
through the clearinghouse but this said
[292]
it doesn't sound like your daughter
[293]
actually has a cleaning business and it
[296]
i don't know how old your daughter is so
[297]
if she were 16 years old and she were
[299]
maybe thinking about having her own
[301]
cleaning business and then going through
[302]
high school and college by paying for
[304]
her own you know fuel and her own dance
[307]
classes and competitions and school
[309]
books and all that stuff i would say yes
[310]
absolutely use this as a springboard
[313]
have her start a business make it legal
[315]
get her insured all that stuff your
[317]
daughter could be 12 though i don't know
[319]
because i don't know
[321]
the rules are a little bit different so
[322]
if you have a 12 year old daughter
[324]
that's just cleaning in exchange for the
[327]
dance classes and it is a direct trade
[330]
you're correct in saying that there
[332]
needs to be an agreement so i put an
[334]
agreement
[335]
hey i just want to bring to your
[337]
attention and make sure that we're both
[338]
on the same page that my 12 year old
[340]
daughter does not have
[341]
a professional business she is not
[343]
licensed bonded and insured she does not
[346]
have chemical safety training she's not
[348]
going to be using any heavy duty
[349]
chemicals you might even put a ph level
[351]
on it all the products you use will be
[353]
ph neutral and that means you're not
[355]
going to get in trouble by spraying
[356]
something on
[357]
you know surfaces that it's going to eat
[359]
through the surface or any of those
[361]
things be very clear about what it is
[363]
she's going to be cleaning while she's
[364]
there will she be cleaning the windows
[366]
and are you going to have around a
[367]
two-story ladder or is it just that
[369]
she's going to be sweeping and mopping
[370]
the floors and maybe cleaning out the
[372]
bathroom at the studio make it very
[374]
clear about the tasks she will be
[376]
expected to do so that your daughter is
[378]
not surprised and that the instructor is
[380]
not surprised because if your and your
[382]
daughter may be excellent at
[383]
communicating but i know a lot of kids
[385]
are not if the teacher already is not
[388]
you're going to be the navigator in
[389]
between the agreement of these two
[391]
people and at any point either of those
[394]
two people could get disenchanted with
[395]
the agreement the kid could go oh uh i
[398]
just changed my mind and i don't like
[400]
cleaning or i don't like dance now
[402]
they're trapped into this weird contract
[404]
right so anytime you need to have a
[406]
clause that says at any time if this is
[408]
not working out for anybody we can bolt
[409]
and there are no hard feelings and we
[411]
still stay friends because if that's in
[414]
writing and the expectations are clear
[416]
on both sides then it works a whole lot
[418]
better than if you're both just kind of
[420]
hoping and there are these covert
[421]
contracts going on and nobody's really
[424]
sure of what was supposed to be cleaned
[426]
and nobody was really sure about the
[427]
value of the lessons and all of those
[429]
things so make sure that it's very
[431]
crystal clear
[432]
and that it's not going to come back to
[434]
bite you later on in the event that
[437]
you're being treated like a regular
[438]
cleaning service when in fact you're not
[440]
so
[441]
like you said be very clear about it put
[443]
it in writing and just say hey just so
[444]
that there are no surprises later on we
[446]
just wrote up this little agreement we
[448]
just want you to look over it and then
[450]
sign it if you have any questions please
[451]
let us know so it can just be very
[453]
matter-of-fact but the dance teacher
[456]
probably also is wondering about like
[458]
how does this work and if it's on paper
[460]
then there are no surprises for her
[462]
either so yes get it on paper and then
[464]
keep me posted i want to hear how this
[466]
goes right now as we move through this
[468]
recessionary period there are going to
[470]
be a lot of these types of deals that
[472]
can be done and any time you can use a
[475]
clearinghouse or a barter exchange it
[478]
opens up the possibilities of all of the
[480]
different services that you can access
[482]
in exchange for the time or effort or
[485]
energy or work that you're putting in
[487]
all right i've got a couple of other
[488]
videos that we've done on barter i'm
[489]
going to leave links of those up here so
[491]
you can check those out and until we
[493]
meet again leave the world a cleaner
[495]
place than when you found it
