our personality and our culture as an
[2]
organization is that we're fast-paced
[4]
we're aggressive and uh we have a
[6]
certain purpose it allows us to attract
[10]
a specific type of franchisee that has
[12]
the desire and also has the intellectual
[14]
capacity to become the 800 pound gorilla
[17]
in the marketplace
[18]
it creates fantastic results

[36]
welcome back to kimberly tv today i have
[39]
two special guests for you it is a daily
[42]
double right here on kim daily tv
[45]
we've got zach butler and josh skolnik
[48]
they are the founders of horsepower
[51]
brands and they are here to tell you all
[54]
an amazing story
[57]
of north american domination
[60]
for every brand that they're bringing to
[62]
market i say that playfully but in all
[64]
in all uh sincerity the reason that zach
[68]
and josh are on my show today are
[69]
because they are two of the most
[72]
powerful brand developers in franchising
[74]
that i personally know so uh josh and
[77]
zach welcome to kim daily tv yeah it's
[80]
great to be here thanks for having us
[82]
very excited to have this conversation
[84]
with you today so zach why don't you
[87]
tell the listeners of kim daily tv a
[89]
little bit about who horsepower brands
[92]
is are
[94]
and what your mission or goal is behind
[98]
founding this company uh and moving
[101]
forward yeah horsepower brands is an
[103]
umbrella company of home service brands
[105]
uh so right now we have uh four
[108]
different service brands we have uh
[110]
we're scheduled to launch three more
[111]
additional brands here in the near
[112]
future and we do things a little bit
[114]
different we like to acquire companies
[117]
in their infancy or before they're a
[119]
franchise so that we can put the right
[121]
amount of capital behind them from the
[123]
beginning which allows us to provide a
[125]
different type of support which then
[127]
allows us to attract a different type of
[130]
franchisee
[131]
and that leads to a faster growth and
[134]
success
[135]
we also help with vertical integration
[137]
so we own the marketing company that we
[139]
work with so that we can scale on demand
[141]
and other verticals as well
[144]
so he said so many things that we're
[145]
going to come back to josh um will you
[148]
add something about horsepower brands to
[150]
this conversation
[153]
yeah i think our focus at horsepower
[154]
brands is number one franchising success
[157]
but more importantly building the
[158]
infrastructure to support what we
[161]
believe will be legacy brands long term
[163]
and making sure that we're not just
[164]
thinking about what do we need today but
[166]
more importantly what what's coming down
[168]
the pike three to five years down the
[169]
road and infrastructure's a huge part of
[171]
that in the way that we're vertically
[172]
integrating beyond just being a
[174]
franchisor and acquiring many of the
[176]
vendors we do business with we're
[178]
launching vendor verticals to support
[180]
our franchisees with a higher level of
[182]
customer service and a better control
[183]
over cost
[185]
they gotta own every part of it guys
[187]
so okay so this sort of like maybe begs
[190]
the question um why is it so important
[193]
for you to be able to own and control
[196]
systems and you know marketing and
[199]
because did something happen in your
[201]
past where you saw it working a
[203]
different way that wasn't that
[205]
successful
[206]
so kim as you know my background as a
[208]
franchise where i've owned multiple
[210]
franchise systems over the years i
[212]
always speak to how a vendor is truly a
[215]
big extension of a franchisor and it can
[217]
also play a big role in making or
[219]
breaking a franchisor and so what we
[221]
monitor closely with our explosive
[223]
growth in the way that we grow brands is
[225]
the financial wherewithal and the
[227]
intellectual capital of the vendors we
[228]
do business with so we can identify
[230]
early are we going to as an organization
[232]
outgrow some of the vendors that we do
[234]
business with or need within our systems
[237]
and so when we identify those issues we
[239]
jump in take control make an acquisition
[242]
of a brand within that service space or
[244]
we'll go ahead and acquire somebody we
[246]
already do business with it's so
[247]
phenomenal and are you able to do that
[250]
because you're backed by private equity
[253]
are privately back so all of the funds
[255]
that we're using in this venture um are
[258]
personal funds from both zach and myself
[260]
um and a large majority of those funds
[262]
have been generated through some prior
[263]
transactions of two large-scale
[265]
franchisor exits that i've had over the
[267]
years amazing they're taking their
[269]
success and franchising and rolling it
[271]
into another franchise and and building
[273]
this whole organization so zach why
[275]
don't you tell us about the brands that
[277]
horsepower currently is bringing to
[279]
market yeah when we look at acquisitions
[281]
kim we have a select uh criteria that we
[284]
need to have for us to be able to make
[286]
the investment and
[288]
when we look at that we like brands in
[289]
home services
[291]
that are services needed by all that are
[294]
in a very there's a where there's a
[295]
large market demand yet
[297]
uh the competition's very fragmented so
[300]
when you look at that our first uh
[301]
acquisition was in the roofing space
[303]
which is mighty dog roofing we've had a
[305]
tremendous amount of success with that
[307]
concept we launched in
[309]
december of uh
[311]
2020 and as of today we have almost 200
[314]
locations across the country so
[317]
by this time next year will be the
[318]
largest
[319]
roofing company in north america
[321]
our second brand was blingel which is
[323]
outdoor lighting so landscape lighting
[325]
holiday lighting and event lighting
[327]
that's an exciting brand again that's a
[329]
service that's needed by all that is
[331]
extremely fragmented
[333]
and at that one the holiday lighting
[335]
aspect is a big part of that business
[337]
that uh there's not any there are no
[339]
national players i foam insulation is uh
[342]
spray foam and blowing insulation and
[345]
spray foam is the future of insulation
[347]
and again there's no national
[349]
competitors really with that market uh
[351]
so that was a recent brand and then our
[352]
last uh that's getting ready to launch
[354]
kim is heroes lawn care it's an
[356]
executive only model that offers three
[358]
main services
[360]
fertilization irrigation repair and then
[362]
dog waste removal or pet waste removal
[365]
and that allows us to be on the property
[367]
every single week and offer the most
[369]
profitable services of that space
[372]
i use all three of those three different
[374]
vendors
[377]
i like it so okay so now when you
[380]
acquired these young entrepreneurial
[382]
companies did you know anything about
[385]
roofing spray foam or
[388]
decorative lighting
[389]
no so our background our background kim
[392]
is
[393]
as entrepreneurs we know how to dissect
[395]
an industry surround ourselves with
[397]
professionals that are experts and
[398]
really invest in the systems and
[400]
processes to really grow what we believe
[403]
to be a semi-absentee business
[404]
opportunity
[406]
a lot of our franchisees are
[407]
entrepreneurs we're encouraging and
[409]
we're providing a lot of uh
[410]
entrepreneurial support uh zach talks a
[412]
lot about eos or traction as many people
[415]
will familiarize themselves with the
[417]
name um but we invest heavily in
[419]
training our franchisees to work on
[420]
their business versus in their business
[423]
i want to come back to that point
[424]
because in the setup of this
[425]
conversation in the beginning
[427]
one of you said you know we're
[429]
attracting a certain candidate and you
[431]
are you know there's a lot of companies
[432]
out there that will use that expression
[434]
we want the chuck in the truck right we
[436]
want the man in the van with the plan
[438]
but that is not what you
[440]
who you try to attract and by virtue of
[443]
the level of investment that you require
[445]
for an outdoor lighting company right
[448]
because that when i see that investment
[450]
i know i know as a consultant oh this is
[452]
an executive model so let's talk a
[454]
little bit about that to the candidate
[456]
out there and why that's intentional on
[458]
your part yeah
[460]
so our personality and our culture as an
[462]
organization is that we're fast-paced
[465]
we're aggressive we're loud
[467]
and we have a certain purpose
[470]
and by increasing the
[472]
by increasing
[474]
the
[475]
investment level of a brand it allows us
[478]
to attract a specific type of
[481]
franchisee that has the desire and also
[483]
has the intellectual capacity to become
[486]
the 800 pound gorilla in their
[487]
marketplace
[488]
and and that is that is our that is our
[490]
personality so if someone doesn't have
[492]
that personality for our culture as a
[494]
franchisee
[495]
they tend to be a little bit frustrated
[498]
because we're pushing them to grow we
[499]
want them to have a big business we want
[501]
them to be multi-brand operators
[503]
but by having certain aspects of the
[506]
investment at a higher level it allows
[507]
them to scale the business faster and
[510]
capture uh more of the market at a
[512]
faster pace so
[514]
we've we've already found that from
[515]
initially from a being able to cash with
[518]
a business increase average unit volumes
[520]
for us it it's uh it creates fantastic
[522]
results
[524]
fast-paced aggressive and loud those of
[527]
you out there who can check those boxes
[530]
i love it i don't 100 agree they're
[533]
attracting a higher level executive
[535]
candidate somebody with a million two
[537]
million three million dollar net worth
[539]
for a very simple business in a trade
[542]
industry that's highly fragmented and
[545]
they're bringing in people who don't
[546]
have experience you don't have to be the
[548]
experience you need to be the ceo who
[551]
can work on your business as zach said
[553]
rather than in your business who can
[555]
follow their lead they're providing the
[557]
tools as josh said earlier they have
[560]
vendors they acquire their vendors so
[562]
they can control so they can control the
[565]
growth of their marketing as they need
[567]
that part to grow so let's talk a little
[570]
bit more about that and the importance
[572]
of owning and controlling that i think
[574]
you said before because you you could
[576]
outpace the growth um what does that
[578]
mean and so in what besides like
[581]
marketing what other vendors are you
[583]
actually um taking in or considering
[585]
taking underneath your own umbrella
[588]
so in our business franchising number
[590]
one is a very fast pace to grow a brand
[594]
on a national level and what i think a
[596]
lot of uh businesses or vendors that we
[598]
do business with don't recognize is when
[600]
they hitch their wagon to somebody like
[602]
horsepower brands we're going to bring
[604]
explosive growth to the industry so
[606]
that's going to put some stress on the
[607]
supply chain for us you know obviously
[610]
digital marketing is a big piece so we
[611]
acquired a digital marketer we've worked
[613]
with the last three years i'm largely in
[615]
part to control results and more
[617]
importantly have accountability to make
[619]
sure that we're keeping the cost per
[621]
lead down or the acquisition cost of
[623]
customers for our franchisees to a
[625]
minimum but then i mentioned earlier
[627]
supply chain you know we all know what's
[628]
going on in the world today and the
[630]
issues with supply chain so being able
[632]
to prepare for our own growth and be
[633]
able to project that you know in our
[635]
outdoor lighting business we set up a
[637]
distribution arm grassroots started uh
[639]
acquired a 50 000 square foot warehouse
[641]
and invested over 10 million dollars in
[643]
products to make sure that when our
[645]
franchisees walk through the door they
[646]
recognize we we've got their best
[648]
interests at heart and when they grow
[650]
and they scale we've got the
[651]
availability to be able to meet their
[653]
needs so it goes beyond that you know
[654]
we've got our own internal call center
[656]
now
[657]
horsepower call solutions or powerhouse
[659]
call solutions to be able to meet the
[661]
demands and and control the training of
[663]
those individuals so we're answering
[664]
those phones for the franchisees to make
[666]
sure that there's a great customer and
[668]
consumer interaction with the
[669]
organization
[671]
do you hear that level of confidence i
[673]
love it 10 million dollars in lights
[675]
that's a lot of bling
[678]
in that warehouse and that's the name of
[679]
that brand blingel
[681]
sorry i'm funny i know
[684]
you're good
[686]
so the people that i place into
[688]
horsepower brands one was a is a
[690]
southwest airlines pilot who now is a
[692]
mighty dog roofing franchise owner right
[694]
like what does a pilot know about
[696]
roofing that's the whole point you don't
[698]
want to know about it because you don't
[699]
you're not working in it you're working
[701]
on it and you can learn as you grow your
[703]
business and most recently
[706]
i think as of this week actually we have
[708]
our newest franchisee two engineers in
[710]
the oil and gas industry from houston
[713]
who are now some of your newest blingle
[715]
franchise owners and they never saw that
[717]
coming we were just celebrating this
[719]
morning and and we were laughing you
[721]
know they came to me thinking they
[723]
wanted help and fitness and i said great
[725]
but let's just not pigeonhole you into
[727]
what you think you know let's just let
[729]
my process work and let's just see what
[731]
else is out there and in speaking with
[733]
them this morning they just said it just
[735]
made more sense when you start putting
[738]
the numbers together and you look at the
[740]
growth potential of a business that
[742]
doesn't have the confined
[744]
you know space of four walls
[746]
and when you look at the partnership
[748]
that's being offered to them through
[750]
horsepower through zach and josh and the
[752]
technology and infrastructure that you
[754]
have
[755]
that you have to offer them as new
[757]
franchise owners they were like it
[759]
didn't make any like literally that
[761]
process went from like a hello call i
[764]
think to two weeks later her telling me
[766]
this is what we want to do when can we
[767]
sign a franchise agreement like that's
[769]
how fast it went and that's a testament
[772]
to her
[773]
their open-mindedness right to even be
[775]
willing to entertain a conversation with
[777]
an outdoor lighting company
[779]
and to the process that i offer the
[782]
daily coach offers through fran choice
[784]
so
[785]
uh zach and josh is there anything else
[788]
you want to tell the listeners of kim
[790]
daily tv about your vision your future
[793]
anything you want them to know in
[794]
parting about your brands
[798]
i've been development and i've been in
[799]
franchise development for a long time
[801]
i've been a multi-brand franchisee i've
[804]
uh lost everything and filed bankruptcy
[806]
in france as a business owner hit rock
[809]
bottom and had to rebuild
[810]
what we're doing is different the
[813]
we're launching emerging brands that
[815]
have support as if we have hundreds of
[817]
franchisees
[818]
and when we look at the level of
[820]
experience that josh and i can bring to
[821]
the table the level of capital
[823]
uh our m a team can invest a lot of time
[826]
and energy into finding the newest and
[827]
best technology and then with us owning
[830]
the digital marketing agency the results
[832]
have to be there
[833]
when we launch an emerging brand if the
[834]
first franchisees are not successful the
[837]
brand does not grow
[838]
and that's where we're putting such such
[840]
amount of focus
[842]
on on the growth initially for those
[844]
first franchisees because they've really
[845]
paved the way for the other franchisees
[847]
in the future good decisions come from
[849]
experience and experience comes from bad
[852]
decisions but mark 20.
[854]
awesome what a way to end this great
[857]
conversation
[858]
follow people who have a track record or
[860]
track record of understanding what
[862]
doesn't work
[863]
as much as what does work i mean right
[865]
that is the biggest fear that every
[867]
candidate coming to the idea of owning a
[869]
business has is am i going to fail
[872]
find people in franchising who inspire
[874]
you people who have a track record who
[877]
you can lean into and learn from and
[879]
grow with
[881]
if this story has inspired you to want
[883]
to take action and potentially begin
[885]
your journey exploring one of the
[887]
horsepower brands please follow the
[889]
email on the screen and josh and zach
[892]
thank you for being my guest today on
[894]
kim daily tv
[896]
thanks for having us
[897]
until next time my name is kim bailey
[899]
and i want to be your daily coach
[903]
[Music]
[916]
you
