[0]
in this video i'm going to take you
[2]
through how to get your license back
[3]
when your license has been suspended due
[6]
to unpaid fines now
[7]
if your driver's license is suspended
[9]
due to unpaid fines the best case
[11]
scenario
[11]
to get your license back is to pay your
[13]
fines in full including all court costs
[15]
and pay
[16]
the reinstatement fee however if you're
[18]
not in a financial position
[20]
to pay your fees in full you may still
[22]
be able to get your license back if you
[24]
enter into a payment plan with the court
[27]
and here's how you do it now before we
[29]
get into details on getting your license
[31]
back you should take our drive suspend
[33]
penalty test
[34]
which will assess your drive suspend
[36]
risks and penalties the link
[37]
is in the description of this video
[40]
let's get started
[41]
so first thing you want to do is you
[43]
want to find out how much you owe
[45]
and to which courts and to do this
[48]
contact the ministry of transportation
[50]
of ontario
[51]
it's known as mto and you can get a list
[54]
of all your fines
[55]
and in which courts those fines are due
[58]
this is
[59]
really a very important step because you
[61]
may have outstanding fines that
[62]
you did not know about or finds that
[64]
you've completely
[66]
forgot so get a complete list of your
[69]
fines as your first step
[71]
two make a judgment call can you
[75]
afford to pay the fines in full
[78]
and the reason why is the fastest and
[80]
surest way to get your driver's license
[82]
back is to pay your fines in full and
[84]
pay the reinstatement fee so once you
[86]
get your list of fines make a judgment
[88]
call
[89]
can you pay your fines in full if you
[91]
can
[92]
if you can borrow some money whatever it
[94]
takes just do it
[96]
but if you can't pay your fines in full
[98]
then you need to enter into a payment
[100]
plan
[101]
with the court to get your driver's
[103]
license back and here's how to do that
[106]
so three you would need to enter into a
[108]
payment plan with each court
[111]
so you need to enter it into a payment
[113]
plan with
[114]
each court your fines are in so if your
[117]
fines are in one court contact that one
[120]
court
[121]
and enter into a payment plan with that
[123]
one court
[124]
but if your fines are in multiple courts
[126]
you have to contact each of those courts
[129]
and enter into a separate payment plan
[132]
which each of those courts
[133]
yes this may be a lot of work i get it
[137]
but there is no way to get around it
[140]
four here's what you need to pay to get
[143]
approved
[144]
the court will need to approve your
[146]
payment plan before you can get your
[148]
driver's license back
[149]
now there really are no hard fast rules
[152]
but generally if you pay about 15 to 20
[154]
percent
[155]
of the fund that's owed the court will
[158]
generally approve your payment plan so
[160]
for example if you owe a thousand
[161]
dollars to a court
[162]
if you pay maybe 150 to 200 as a start
[166]
the court will likely accept your
[168]
payment plan
[170]
five here's what to do if you can't
[172]
afford
[173]
that fifteen to twenty percent so if you
[176]
can't afford to pay that fifteen to
[178]
twenty percent as your first payment
[179]
pay what you can uh and then apply again
[183]
when you have more money so for example
[185]
if you have a thousand dollar fine owed
[187]
to a court and you only have 75 dollars
[190]
pay that 75 and keep a receipt of your
[193]
payment
[194]
when you have additional funds go back
[196]
to that court
[197]
pay those extra funds and again apply
[199]
for a payment plan
[200]
once you hit that threshold again 15 to
[203]
20 percent of what's owed
[204]
the court will likely approve your
[206]
payment plan
[208]
six here's what to pay if you owe fines
[211]
to multiple
[212]
courts it is very common for
[215]
people to owe fines to multiple courts
[217]
and if you need to pay
[219]
15 to 20 as a down payment against those
[222]
fines
[223]
it's important to allocate your money
[225]
pro rata
[226]
and here's what that means so let's take
[228]
an example let's say yo
[230]
three thousand dollars to three
[232]
different courts and you have
[233]
three hundred dollars to pay as a first
[235]
payment if your three thousand dollar
[237]
total comes from
[238]
three different fines of one thousand
[240]
dollars each then take your three
[242]
hundred dollars and
[243]
pay one hundred dollars to each of the
[245]
three courts
[247]
however if your three thousand dollar
[248]
fine comes from three courts
[250]
but one fine is fifteen hundred and the
[253]
other two
[253]
fines are smaller say 750 each
[257]
in this case you should pay half of your
[259]
300 payment in other words
[261]
150 against the 1500 fine and pay 75
[265]
each to the courts with the smaller
[268]
fines
[269]
seven don't miss your payment plan
[272]
commitment
[272]
if the court approves you for a payment
[274]
plan it's very important that you
[276]
don't miss any of the payments that
[278]
you've committed to make
[280]
if you miss a payment the court will
[282]
likely suspend your driver's license
[284]
and if that's the case it may be very
[286]
difficult to enter
[288]
into another payment plan eight
[291]
even after you get your driver's license
[294]
back and you've paid all your fines
[295]
you still may be suspended
[298]
after you get your driver's license
[299]
reinstated by mto it's very important to
[301]
get
[302]
confirmation in writing that your
[304]
driver's license is valid
[306]
this is important because you may have
[308]
some other issues suspending your
[310]
license other than
[311]
outstanding fines so make sure you get
[314]
written confirmation that you're okay to
[317]
drive before
[318]
you get behind the wheel so you can
[321]
cover yourself
[321]
