I'm actually gonna show you guys how I made this聽聽

roof rack and today I'm gonna do something a聽
little bit different where I do more of a speed聽聽

overview and show you guys my process so I'm聽
just gonna talk over it and hopefully give you聽聽

guys a couple of tips if you decide to build your聽
own and the reason why I'm doing this app to kids聽聽

now and spacing my forint just got pretty tight聽
especially when we packed everything to go camping聽聽

this man I had to spend more time organizing聽
organizing things and shift things around to fit聽聽

to find more space some options I looked into聽
we're at rooftop cargo box hitch mounted tray聽聽

and even a cargo trailer ever done that really聽
fit my practical needs or taste after search on聽聽

Pinterest I actually fell in love with the idea聽
of getting a roof rack it looked good have lots聽聽

of storage space and serve multiple functions聽
however the one I wanted cost over 1,800 and聽聽

had a wait time of five to eight months as these聽
were made to order me camping and fishing season聽聽

around the corner I had a figure something out聽
and then I thought why not design and build one聽聽

myself look fly Technium out a month and cost me聽
about five learning materials building one man I聽聽

can configure it to fit my family and personal聽
need okay so we basically have three essential聽聽

things going on here the basket for storage the聽
mounting bracket that attaches the basket to the聽聽
[74]
roof of the vehicle and last the wind fairing聽
to help reduce wind noise so the first thing we聽聽

need to do is measure there are four important聽
things to measure here the location of the fact聽聽

that roof mounts the distance from the top of聽
the windshield to the rear of the roof right聽聽

before the lift gate went up finally if you have聽
a Sun roof you may want to leave a cutout for it聽聽

so in my 2004 toyota 4runner measuring from the聽
rear of the lift gate to the front windshield聽聽
[99]
measured about 91 inches the rear mounts are 7.5聽
inches from the lift gate and the rear mounts聽聽

to the front mount is about fifty eight point聽
three seven five inches the front mounts from聽聽
[112]
one another are about forty five inches apart and聽
the rear mounts from one another about forty three聽聽
[117]
points six to five inches apart and last the聽
location of the mounting holes are fifty seven聽聽

millimeters apart based on these measurements聽
I went with an overall basket size of 84 inches聽聽

long and 44 inches by me being OCD practice with聽
me being a mechanical engineering talking to my聽聽
[138]
cat software saw words to draw this thing up in聽
30 down to the last detail started out with the聽聽
[142]
layout sketch where I would define my factory聽
locations to be used as a starting point then聽聽

around that I sketched out the framework of the聽
basket then use a weldment feature in solver to聽聽
[152]
turn them into tubes then I drooped the brackets聽
that would hold the one fairing then I created聽聽

the base plates where the roof rack mounts would聽
connect to the basket then the actual mount that聽聽

would attach to the roof was the forerunner to聽
the basket I wanted to do a bent plate but later聽聽

changes into three separate place that would聽
be welded together then I added some gussets聽聽

for style points they also serve as anchoring聽
points for tie-down straps since I wouldn't聽聽

be mounting an awning in the near future I also聽
modeled it into the assembly and for future mods聽聽

added in the winch and table mounts that would聽
be fabricated and installed sometime after this聽聽

would show me what and how much material I needed聽
to buy for this project I didn't search locally聽聽

most of what I needed and then I went to inter聽聽

West meadows to pick up the remaining items on聽
my Cutlass now we build the first thing we had聽聽

to do was get the tubes bit luckily I found a聽
guy on off-road with the professionals who've聽聽

been there willing to do all events for 80 bucks聽
after I got the twos bent I decided to design a聽聽

simple fixture and build it out on some two by聽
fours this would prevent things from shifting聽聽

while I welded and when allowed me to clamp the聽
tube say they were flat and aligned correctly聽聽

to join the main tube to one another I used a聽
large tube that would packed as a collar this聽聽

lives over where both the tube halves meet along聽
for a stronger connection now it was time to get聽聽
[244]
comfortable and do a lot of tube notching this and聽
mocking up the mouth took about 80% of the build聽聽

time the knotch piece has served as verticals聽
and horizontal pieces of the basket frame

next was to make six top place that聽
would connect the basket to the mounts

mocking up the mouse was the biggest pain in the聽
butt it consisted of a rubber gasket steel plate聽聽

and plastic spacers standoffs that would give it聽
height that was more manual to mount something聽聽

on to I cheated and reprinted my spacers with聽
the heart material then I cut a few gaskets to聽聽

seal and prevent mounts from scratching the be聽
able to make the main part of the mounts I cut聽聽

three pieces of 3/16 thick steel and tag them聽
together using some nominal angles as a starting聽聽
[303]
point I didn't mounted it to the factory location聽
then tapped the mount with him forever mallet to聽聽
[308]
tweak it until I got it to say right with the聽
basket and the roof of the VGO then I repeated聽聽
[314]
this three more times for the rest of the mounts聽
after getting the basket Square to the roof of the聽聽
[319]
vehicle I think lamp each mounts to the basket聽
plate and drill holes for where the naughty聽聽

fasteners would later be installed before I can聽
install two expanded metal I flipped the basket聽聽
[331]
over and laid the 4x8 sheet down and trended to聽
size to prevent water from getting trapped between聽聽

the cross tubes and expanded metal I raised the聽
buyer quota by temporary shimming it with some聽聽
[342]
flat bar I had laying around after 100 or so tag聽
welds the base was nice and sturdy not with the聽聽
[349]
basket out of the way I moved on fabbing up the聽
wind fairing after mocking up and test fitting a聽聽
[354]
few made with cardboard and then made a template聽
and got some aluminum sheet and trimmed out the聽聽

wind frame to mount the wind fairing on I got some聽
flat bar and bedtime clothes 220 degrees or until聽聽

the bottom of the wind fearing sat flush to the聽
roof to prevent the wind Fang from scratching the聽聽

roof I used some trim Luxio after all the metal聽
splitter had been grunting down I didn't gave聽聽

it one last wipe down with some acetone to clean聽
off any dirt or grime that was left over I've been聽聽

doing some research I had three options for top聽
coat power coat two parts Sigma stage paint and聽聽
[392]
trucking line erato can ultimately I wanted the聽
power coat option it was just more durable and聽聽

is more uniform however it just wasn't feasible聽
as far as cost also if I were to make changes聽聽

down the road I say I want to add something to聽
the roof rack I'd have to grind it down and then聽聽
[412]
reapply it that just wasn't in the cards but聽
that all said and done I ended up applying a聽聽

self etching primer from Estonia I went through聽
about four cans which gave me three coats of聽聽

coverage then I lit a cure overnight to be ready聽
for a top coat for the top coat I use a hotrod聽聽
[428]
paint and applied three pills using a Philip II聽
gun this would give it a nice even semi-gloss聽聽

black finish after an hour or spraying I was聽
finally done and here is how the finish came out

after a few days have passed it聽
was time to finally install the聽聽

rack system I became first with the聽
mounts using some silicone in between聽聽

each layer to weatherproof it after all聽
four mounts were in I had my wife come聽聽

help me lift the Basques onto the roof and聽
finish installing the remaining fasteners聽聽

all that was now left was installing the聽
wind fairing here is the final outcome

after I did some road testing there was no聽
wind noise I was pretty happy so I pulled聽聽

it over hopped on top and this is this聽
rack was pretty solid it wasn't anywhere

now it was time to load up all our things and聽
get ready to go camping so now you know how it聽聽

all went together I would say the toughest part of聽
the build would be getting the mountains where I聽聽

need him to be the roof of my car isn't flat and聽
there's a slight curve so this makes it difficult聽聽

to measure accurately so now I'm gonna go into聽
what I like about the rack which is pretty much聽聽
[522]
95% of it I'm pretty happy how it came out but聽
there's always room for improvement starting off聽聽

with the basket size I like the depth of it and聽
the stealthiness however if I were to change one聽聽
[532]
thing I would add about two inches to the width聽
of the basket so this way it's more proportional聽聽

with the 4runner in the near future I plan on聽
installing a winch after I make my boat mounts聽聽

which will allow me to transport my jon boat聽
without the need for a trailer I also have a CVT聽聽

awning that I need to install I'll probably make聽
the bracket soon after this video and to make it聽聽

easier to reach the roof rack I'll probably put in聽
an order for a goby ladder to complete the setup聽聽
