Channel: Jarrad Morrow

[0]
in this video I'm going to walk you
[1]
through exactly how I invest in my Roth
[3]
IRA with my own money using my favorite
[6]
investing platform m1 finance so this
[8]
video is a lot more tactical so I'm
[10]
gonna get you into kind of my brain and
[12]
explain to you why am i picking these
[14]
certain investments for my retirement
[16]
why am I not picking these investments
[18]
how am I thinking about it when I go to
[21]
invest my money and the whole thought
[23]
process and philosophy that I have when
[25]
it comes to investing for retirement so
[28]
I hope you check out this whole video
[29]
because it is jam-packed with so much
[31]
value that I think is gonna help you and
[33]
I think it's it's always helpful to get
[35]
an idea of what someone else is doing
[37]
what are they doing with their own money
[38]
okay they're talking about it on all
[39]
these videos but I want to see what
[41]
they're actually doing well I'm going to
[43]
show you what I am doing with my money
[44]
just a little disclaimer I am not
[46]
telling you what to do with your money
[47]
this is just what I'm doing with my
[49]
money if you need some help please talk
[51]
to your professional or do your own
[52]
research
[53]
make sure to Hulk smash that thumbs up
[55]
button and if you figure that you liked
[57]
m1 finance and you want to use that
[58]
investing platform with you were at with
[60]
your Roth IRA then please use the link
[63]
down in the description to sign up it is
[65]
an affiliate link it helps support
[66]
myself in this channel it is no extra
[69]
cost to you but if you like me I'd
[71]
appreciate it if not not a big deal I'm
[73]
still gonna make these videos just for
[75]
you cuz you're awesome
[76]
first one to mention if you haven't
[77]
checked out my m1 finance review video I
[79]
highly recommend checking that out if
[81]
you have any questions when it comes to
[83]
how to start thinking through or start
[86]
investing in a Roth IRA just the initial
[88]
thought process you need to go through I
[90]
also have another video out about that
[92]
as well
[93]
so let's go ahead and get started on
[95]
showing you the more tactical thing so
[97]
how I actually look for the funds and
[99]
invest in my Roth IRA with my favorite
[102]
investing platform m1 finance so here's
[105]
the initial screen and I have to create
[108]
a pie for my Roth IRA so I do have
[111]
something in there a slice it's the
[113]
Vanguard real estate fund vnq ignore
[117]
that right now it's just a placeholder
[118]
because I had to put something in there
[119]
I am NOT going to invest in the NQ
[122]
within my Roth IRA one of the things I
[125]
like about my Roth IRA or when one
[127]
finance is that you can toggle back and
[129]
forth between the different investment
[130]
accounts that you have with m1 finance
[132]
so in this case
[133]
I have a Roth IRA account which I'm in
[135]
right now and then I also have two
[137]
individual taxable accounts also so if I
[141]
really wanted to go check out those
[143]
other accounts I can hop into those
[144]
really fast it's a really cool feature
[146]
that is I just wanted to mention real
[147]
quick I need to fill up my pie with the
[149]
investments that I want to go in with it
[152]
go within my Roth IRA so what I'm gonna
[154]
do is I'm going to go to research now
[157]
under research you've got these tabs up
[159]
top here you've got stocks you got funds
[162]
you've got expert PI's and then a
[163]
watchlist now stocks all you do is click
[166]
on it and you've got a list of all kinds
[169]
of stocks they but they offer over 6,000
[171]
stocks that you can invest in if you
[173]
can't find what you're looking for on
[175]
this list initially you can always
[177]
search for the symbol whatever you want
[180]
we'll say Textron it's a stock that I
[183]
know off top of my head you can go in
[184]
there find it and you can add it to your
[186]
portfolio or you can add it to your
[188]
watch list which we'll talk about watch
[190]
lists here in a minute
[191]
okay so the next they have funds so
[193]
these are all the ETF's that they offer
[195]
for you to invest in right here once
[199]
again you can click through these pages
[201]
and look for for whatever you're looking
[203]
for or you can go ahead and search for
[206]
whatever symbol it is or name they also
[211]
have the expert PI's which if you
[212]
watched my review video then you know
[214]
about these it's one of my favorite
[216]
features of M on Finance I have a lot of
[218]
favorite features when it comes to any
[220]
one finance cuz they do a lot of things
[222]
right for people like us the average
[224]
investor but they do have these expert
[227]
PI's and I highly recommend if you open
[228]
up open up 8 an account with m1 finance
[231]
please go into the expert PI's and just
[233]
dig around kind of get a feel for what
[235]
are they offering these expert PI's are
[237]
all based on a higher level goal that
[239]
you want your money to be invested in
[243]
and they will pick they will
[244]
automatically pick the kinds of
[246]
investments that you will go in based on
[248]
the higher level goal that you have so
[250]
definitely go in here and poke around a
[252]
little bit let's go ahead and get in to
[254]
actually picking my investments for my
[257]
Roth IRA so let me go pick out my funds
[259]
now before I get in to show you what I
[262]
invest in these are my thoughts my
[264]
opinions I'm not advising you what to
[266]
invest in
[267]
just what I do let me first say that I
[269]
don't need any of this retirement money
[270]
for 30 years so I am a buy-and-hold
[274]
investor when it comes to my retirement
[276]
accounts I want to invest in low-cost
[279]
index funds
[280]
now there's two that I personally like
[282]
the ETF versions
[284]
I like vo oh and I like vti
[287]
but in this case I am investing my Roth
[290]
IRA money into vti so in this case I'm
[293]
gonna go to vti and instead of adding to
[295]
my portfolio right now I'm gonna add it
[297]
to a watchlist okay so I haven't
[299]
actually added it to my portfolio at
[301]
this point at the point in time I'm
[302]
gonna go back to funds and I still want
[304]
to add vo because I like them I still
[307]
want to watch them so I'm going to add
[308]
them to my watch list
[309]
now I'm gonna also look for a bond so
[312]
I've already done my research and I'm
[313]
going to and I know what bond I want to
[315]
add in there it's BND the Vanguard total
[318]
bond market so I'm gonna click on that
[320]
and I'm going to go to watch okay so now
[322]
I'm gonna go to my watchlist and I am
[324]
going to start adding these investments
[326]
to my pies no let me stop right here and
[329]
show you as you're kind of looking for
[331]
the different possible index funds that
[333]
you want to add to your retirement
[334]
account what you can do with m1 finance
[337]
that's cool is that you click on the
[340]
symbol so in the watchlist I clicked on
[342]
vti and it gives you all the lists all
[345]
the things that you need to know about
[346]
vti so for example it's $150 per share
[351]
point zero three expense ratio gives you
[354]
the dividend yield it kind of gives you
[355]
the performance over the past couple
[357]
months years and it also tells you what
[360]
the payout was for the individual
[361]
dividends it also shows you how many
[363]
holding is that a vti has so it's over
[365]
thirty five hundred so it's trying to
[367]
mimic the total stock market it's trying
[369]
to give you the same performance as the
[371]
S&P 500 and then some because the SMP
[374]
500 is only 500 stocks now they will
[377]
also tell you what the allocation is so
[381]
as you can see there's not really
[382]
anything in bonds here so if you want to
[384]
invest in bonds as well then you got to
[387]
do that on your own and that's why you
[388]
saw that I added that that bond index
[391]
fund to to my watch list and we'll get
[395]
into to that here in a minute and how
[397]
much I want to put in there but one
[399]
thing I want to show you
[400]
is so within vti it shows you the top
[402]
holdings here now they my finance only
[405]
shows you the two biggest holdings but
[408]
if you want to get an idea of what is
[410]
actually in vti this is what I recommend
[412]
doing I highlight vti here just do a
[415]
right-click and search a Google for vti
[418]
now when this pops up I highly recommend
[420]
since this is a Vanguard fund highly
[422]
recommend just looking at the Vanguard
[424]
website for vti so we can click on that
[428]
and then we can get an idea of what are
[431]
all the companies that are within the
[434]
vti index fund we can click on the
[438]
portfolio and management and this is
[442]
going to show us it's going to give us
[443]
more detail than m1 finances on this vti
[448]
total stock market index fund right so
[452]
it gives you the different equity sector
[456]
and diversification so it gives you the
[458]
amount or how it's broken down when it
[460]
comes to tech you know health care
[462]
financials so it gives you that idea but
[464]
if you want to go one level deeper and
[466]
say hey what are all the companies that
[467]
vti has what has within within it so
[473]
we'll go down here sorry I'm scrolling
[475]
really fast you click portfolio holdings
[477]
as you can see they hold over 3500
[481]
stocks within vti which that's a lot and
[484]
it lists the different holdings from the
[487]
largest amount to smallest so as you can
[490]
see but they're holding the largest
[492]
amount in vti is is Microsoft and Apple
[497]
that Amazon a lot of companies that you
[498]
recognize because they're they're larger
[500]
companies they're they're very stable
[502]
companies but you can literally go
[504]
through the list of all 3,500 of these
[507]
which as you keep going further and
[509]
further you might start to see names of
[512]
companies that you don't recognize like
[513]
Willis Towers Watson I don't know what
[516]
that is but they own some money in it
[518]
and you can always look that company up
[520]
if you really want to okay so that's if
[523]
you want to get an idea of what all is
[525]
in vti so let's go back to m1 finance
[528]
and let's go ahead and add the vitia add
[530]
vti to my portfolio so I'm going to add
[533]
it to
[534]
my Roth IRA okay so it starts to build
[540]
my PI if you will like I said I had the
[542]
vanguard real estate fund in there that
[545]
was just a placeholder so I'm gonna
[546]
delete that out right now now I'm not
[548]
going to choose my allocation at this
[549]
point yet I'm going to next add a bond
[552]
in there so I'm gonna add it and if you
[555]
remember I did add it to my watch list
[557]
so I can find it really quickly so I
[559]
click on BMD I add it to my basket now
[563]
here's the allocation that I'm doing I'm
[565]
doing a 95/5 allocation so as I said I
[571]
don't need this money for 30 years I
[573]
want to have my money exposed in the
[576]
stock market because that's gonna give
[578]
it the most potential to grow if it is
[580]
so that's why I'm going very heavy
[582]
within vti 95% of my money because I'm
[585]
okay to handle the ups and downs in the
[588]
short term now I know some people who
[591]
are gonna retire for another 30 years or
[593]
need their retirement money for another
[594]
30 years who are actually a hundred
[596]
percent in one thing right whether it's
[599]
vti or vo Oh personally I just want to
[602]
throw a 5% in a bond just because I
[604]
don't know it makes me feel safer it's
[606]
gonna be personally up to you and that
[608]
is one thing that I talk about in my
[610]
Roth IRA video that I help you think and
[613]
I hope you think through the allocation
[615]
I might even change this who knows in a
[618]
year I might change it to a hundred
[619]
percent and VTI I don't know we'll see
[621]
what happens so this is my pie for my
[624]
Roth IRA at this point in time so I'm
[626]
gonna save this pie get firm okay there
[632]
it is now as you can see I already have
[633]
a thousand dollars in cash in my Roth
[636]
IRA account here but I'm not going to
[638]
invest all thousand dollars so I
[640]
personally use dollar cost averaging to
[642]
invest my money so six thousand dollars
[645]
per year from my Roth IRA is the max six
[648]
thousand divided by 12 is five hundred
[649]
dollars per month the first couple
[652]
months of the year I did invest directly
[654]
through the Vanguard website until I
[656]
found m1 financed and tested them out
[658]
now I'm going to start putting all of my
[660]
Roth IRA money I'm going to invest it
[663]
through m1 finance because I love them
[664]
that much so I threw in initial thousand
[667]
dollars but
[668]
I'm going to actually always only invest
[670]
500 of that $1,000 so I already have my
[674]
my PI my portfolio created here so I'm
[678]
gonna go ahead and buy this is where I
[682]
get to choose how much I'm going to
[684]
invest so available for orders the
[686]
$1,000 I invest $500 at a time continue
[691]
and then they will fulfill my order
[696]
tomorrow so if you want to learn more
[697]
about how often they fulfill orders that
[700]
you place or it's trades if you will
[704]
then you can always read about it a
[706]
little bit more I do touch about touch
[707]
on it within that m1 finance review if
[711]
you want to want to see me talk about
[713]
that so I'm going to confirm okay
[718]
now what's cool is now I basically set
[722]
up a trade to be placed tomorrow so you
[725]
want to know when it's going to be
[726]
placed
[727]
I can go to here here to your portfolio
[729]
has estimated traits so I click on that
[731]
and it tells me the next trading window
[733]
is in 13 hours exactly it's kind of cool
[736]
and it has a breakdown of that five
[738]
hundred dollars four hundred seventy
[740]
five is going to be vti and $25.00 is
[745]
going to be put towards BND once again
[750]
and one Finance has fractional shares so
[753]
I don't have to buy full shares they're
[755]
gonna buy the exact amount on e2 for
[757]
this four hundred and seventy five
[758]
dollars which is amazing I love it now
[761]
one thing I'm not going to show you are
[763]
so I'm basically set up it's going to
[765]
auto invest it tomorrow while I'm at
[766]
work I don't have to worry about it
[768]
now one thing I want to mention is some
[770]
people will say the stock market is
[772]
really high right now Jarrod you
[773]
shouldn't be investing I don't care the
[777]
reason I don't care is as I said I'm a
[779]
long-term investor I don't need this
[780]
money for 30 years and because I don't
[782]
need it for 30 years I don't care what
[784]
the price of vti is or BND within a 24
[789]
hour period I don't care how it changes
[791]
now now would I invest huge amounts of
[794]
money right now probably not because the
[797]
stock market is at an all-time high
[799]
I don't know what it's going to do with
[800]
$500 in is an
[802]
to make him break me make or break me
[804]
remember time in the market is more
[807]
important than timing the market so one
[809]
thing I'm not gonna show you is that
[810]
from here on out I am going to set up an
[813]
auto investment into m1 finance so it
[816]
automatically invests 500 dollars for me
[818]
every single month so will automatically
[820]
withdraw it from my bank account put
[822]
into my m1 finance account my m1 finance
[824]
Roth IRA account and it's going to
[827]
automatically invest it for me because I
[829]
don't trust myself I will look at the
[831]
stock market and based on if it's up or
[835]
down I'm afraid that that's going to
[837]
determine whether I buy buy shares
[840]
within my Roth IRA I don't like that I'm
[843]
a human I know that I just want to get
[845]
the perfect price but I know how bad of
[848]
a thought process that is so I would
[850]
rather have m1 Finance automatically do
[852]
it for me because time in the market is
[855]
better than timing the market you don't
[858]
try to time the market just forget about
[860]
it if it's your retirement money and you
[861]
don't need it for 20 or 30 years just
[863]
forget what the prices put your money in
[866]
consistently consistency is the key
[868]
because if you sit there and wait around
[870]
for the perfect price they're gonna be
[872]
waiting around forever because it can it
[873]
can always go lower and it's just like
[876]
gambling right you keep playing when
[878]
you're up because you're up why not and
[880]
the next thing you know you lose all
[881]
your money and like you're like oh why
[883]
didn't I quit when I was up well because
[885]
you were feeling really high in this
[887]
case you're gonna be trying to play the
[889]
stock market and wait until okay it's at
[891]
$150 per share it now let me wait till
[893]
get still to 140 and then it hits that
[896]
hundred and $40 per share and you're
[898]
like you know what it's gotten out in
[899]
140 it could probably go a little bit
[901]
lower
[901]
see you wait to buy and next thing you
[903]
know it goes from 140 back up to 150 and
[905]
you're like okay I'm still gonna stay
[907]
out because it won't went up above my
[909]
140 eventually you're never going to
[912]
invest so I highly recommend opening up
[915]
opening up and m1 finance count set up
[918]
the auto invest let them take care
[920]
before you that's it
