Can Buying Offsets CANCEL OUT Your Carbon Footprint? - YouTube
Channel: Sykom
[0]
today majority of people think that
[2]
climate change is one of the biggest
[3]
crises humanity has ever faced and we
[6]
all need to do something to reduce
[8]
carbon emissions before it's too late
[11]
but what is something
[13]
for some people that something may be
[15]
switching to an electric vehicle
[17]
for others it's switching to a
[18]
plant-based diet
[20]
for still others it's upgrading their
[22]
homes to have energy-efficient lights
[24]
and appliances
[25]
these are all great steps to take but
[27]
not everyone can commit to making such
[29]
immediate and massive lifestyle changes
[32]
especially in the absence of government
[34]
subsidies and infrastructure
[36]
and we need everyone to be doing
[38]
something now
[39]
otherwise the earth's climate will
[41]
continue on the road to disaster the
[44]
good news is there is something that
[46]
everyone can do to take action now
[48]
without waiting for any government
[50]
regulation
[51]
buy carbon offsets
[54]
the basic idea is that you can cancel
[56]
out the greenhouse gases you emit by
[58]
supporting a company or organization
[60]
that pulls carbon emissions out of the
[62]
air
[63]
for example by flying round-trip from
[66]
california to new york
[68]
a single passenger emits approximately
[70]
half a metric ton of carbon dioxide into
[73]
the air
[74]
but if each passenger on the plane was
[76]
buying carbon offsets the net effect of
[78]
this flight on the environment would be
[80]
zero emissions
[82]
this is a pretty great solution when you
[84]
think about it the average person in the
[87]
usa is responsible for 16 to 20 metric
[90]
tons of co2 emissions per year
[94]
incidentally this is much higher than
[96]
the global average of 4 tons per person
[99]
if we are to reach our climate goals
[101]
that number needs to be less than two
[104]
tons per person per year for every
[106]
person on earth
[108]
that's an impossible goal if we were
[110]
only to rely on everyone making
[112]
immediate and drastic lifestyle changes
[114]
like cutting down meat consumption and
[116]
becoming more energy efficient
[119]
instead people could buy carbon offsets
[121]
to cancel out the emissions they cannot
[123]
avoid producing
[125]
while continuing to make small steps
[126]
towards reducing their emissions
[129]
even better still carbon offsets are
[132]
very affordable
[133]
the price of carbon offsets varies
[135]
depending on which organization you
[137]
choose to support
[139]
at most it costs about dollars to remove
[142]
one metric ton of carbon emissions
[144]
a cost which will only go down as
[146]
technology improves
[148]
so even if we assume an individual in
[150]
the usa is producing emissions at the
[153]
higher end of the scale
[155]
it would only cost about
[156]
2.74 cents per day to completely cancel
[160]
out that person's contribution to
[161]
climate change
[163]
that's less than a cup of coffee in some
[165]
places
[167]
but before you go rushing off to cancel
[169]
out your emissions make sure you do your
[171]
homework and figure out if the
[172]
organization you support is removing
[175]
additional carbon dioxide from the
[177]
atmosphere then would otherwise be
[179]
removed
[181]
for example trees naturally remove
[183]
carbon dioxide from the atmosphere so
[185]
many reforestation and forest
[187]
preservation organizations may sell
[189]
offsets
[191]
however there have been cases where
[193]
organizations overestimate the amount of
[195]
carbon being removed because certain
[197]
species of trees remove less carbon
[199]
dioxide than others
[201]
other organizations have sold offsets by
[204]
saying they will preserve a certain area
[206]
of forest
[207]
only that area of the forest was never
[209]
in any danger of being destroyed
[211]
so buying these offsets does nothing to
[213]
change the world's net carbon emissions
[216]
if you want to make sure your offsets
[218]
are additional you need to look for
[220]
projects that would not exist without
[222]
the carbon offset market
[224]
these can certainly be reforestation and
[227]
forest preservation efforts as long as
[230]
the trees would not be planted or
[231]
protected without your support
[234]
but there are many more carbon removal
[236]
technologies that are just beginning to
[238]
come into existence and need financial
[240]
backing
[242]
direct air capture which removes carbon
[244]
dioxide from ambient air
[247]
carbon capture which prevents carbon
[249]
dioxide from industrial flu stacks from
[251]
entering our atmosphere
[253]
and methane capture which helps remove
[256]
emissions from farms and landfills are
[258]
just a few of the technologies that
[260]
remove additional carbon emissions that
[262]
would otherwise add to the climate
[264]
crisis
[265]
and many of these companies are relying
[267]
heavily on the carbon offset market to
[269]
fund further research and innovation
[271]
so next time you treat yourself to a cup
[273]
of coffee don't forget to treat the
[276]
earth to some carbon offsets as well
[278]
