There’s a stock ‘pick-up’ in the retail sector - YouTube

[2]
Rising retail inventories could mean
[4]
deep discounts for consumers is now the
[6]
time to purchase that big ticket item
[8]
you've been eyeing we're going to jump
[9]
on holiday shopping and which retail
[11]
stocks are good buys right now joining
[14]
me now telsea Advisory Group CEO and
[16]
chief research Officer Dana telsey Dana
[19]
is always good to talk to you but it is
[21]
really great to talk to you live and in
[22]
person finally exactly thank you and on
[25]
the first day of your new studio so
[26]
congratulations thank you for having me
[28]
here we wanted you to inaugurate it so
[30]
let's start I guess at the top of the
[32]
funnel Supply chains I'm hearing all
[35]
sorts of contradictions the Wall Street
[36]
Journal reported that the cost of
[39]
transporting goods has fallen 4X and yet
[42]
it's still way more expensive than it
[44]
used to be that it's it you know we're
[46]
getting stuff from China faster but it's
[47]
still 100 days versus 50 back in 2019.
[50]
what are you seeing in the uh in the
[52]
supply chain disruption is continuing in
[54]
the supply chain there's no doubt about
[56]
it I think orders are now coming in that
[58]
were placed a while ago so it's leading
[60]
to a mismatch in terms of time timing of
[63]
what the goods are for and when they're
[64]
arriving I think some of the new Goods
[66]
you're having lead times continuing to
[68]
be placed earlier but as you mentioned
[71]
we are seeing a bit of a reduction in
[74]
the cost of ocean Freight that's coming
[75]
in and some companies are still using
[78]
air freight because they want the goods
[80]
as soon as possible to try to maximize
[82]
full price sales but that's really
[84]
expensive uh so let's take so you got
[86]
the supply chain now you go to
[87]
inventories you walk through a Target on
[90]
the one hand I'm reading that they
[91]
bought too many TVs too many appliances
[93]
so we'll see sales but you walked out
[94]
another aisle in this it's bare what's
[97]
going on I think inventories are
[98]
starting to heat up one beginning to
[100]
hear of order cancellations from some of
[102]
the wholesale customers and some
[104]
companies are beginning to pack and hold
[106]
some of the goods that have arrived
[108]
already I think in the apparel World
[110]
we'll have a promotional back to school
[112]
season given the increase in the number
[114]
of in the amount of inventories so that
[116]
sounds like good news for Shoppers what
[118]
are we seeing in terms of price
[119]
increases or could there be such thing
[121]
as a decrease in stationary times on
[123]
average most prices are going up at
[125]
least mid single digits to low double
[126]
digits and it's not just the cost of
[129]
supply chain and Freight but also the
[131]
cost of raw materials like cotton and
[133]
we're going to continue to see price
[134]
increases we go as we go through the
[136]
back half of the year but it certainly
[138]
means a bifurcation because that lower
[140]
income consumer who's now lacked the
[143]
stimulus that they received last year is
[145]
pulling back on spending and meanwhile
[147]
you you notice the opposite trend on
[150]
Wealthy consumers which is that they are
[151]
keeping up with their spending so that
[154]
suggests another bifurcation which is in
[156]
which retailers are going to benefit and
[158]
which ones are going to get hurt right
[159]
exactly and one of the things on the
[161]
wealthy consumers that everyone watching
[163]
closely is they're correlated to the
[165]
stock market the volatility in the stock
[167]
market look at the first half of the
[169]
Year s p consumer discretionary was down
[172]
in the index by over 30 percent also the
[174]
retail ETF down by over 30 percent so
[177]
that'll be watched closely too but when
[179]
you think about the stocks you're
[181]
certainly seeing some of the the
[182]
essentials still work you take a look at
[184]
Costco and the demand for Costco with
[186]
the value that they can offer you look
[188]
at Kroger on the supermarket side and
[190]
let's face it we're back in person now
[192]
so Estee Lauder on makeup you're seeing
[194]
that recovery and makeup and and fancy
[196]
your clothes right people are getting
[198]
out of sweatpants and putting on clothes
[199]
to go to the office or a party or
[201]
wedding well you've known those no those
[202]
numbers on weddings are big 2
[204]
's million weddings expected this
[207]
average of nearly 2.1 million a year so
[210]
in this point in time occasion wear is
[212]
here anxious to see the planning as we
[214]
go through the remainder of 2022. now
[217]
Costco is interesting because not only
[219]
do the lower end consumers go there to
[221]
get the deals but it's known for
[222]
attracting some wealthy people too and
[224]
it's got a Tailwind of everybody wants
[226]
cheaper gas so are there other companies
[229]
like that a TJX that sort of does well
[231]
with both ends yeah we think Jax is
[233]
going to do well also I think one of the
[235]
things we're seeing with off prices
[236]
they're going to be a beneficiary of
[238]
these inventories that are coming in and
[240]
dislocated places and I think there
[242]
you've been watching closely and placing
[244]
their orders because more is still to
[246]
come but the off-pricers will benefit
[249]
certainly for their customers who maybe
[251]
want to bargain more so than need a
[254]
bargain so that's a really interesting
[256]
Dynamic so with the TJX for instance
[257]
when somebody over orders in one thing
[260]
it can end up on the shelves there is
[262]
that right exactly and that'll also
[264]
benefit some of the outlet stores also
[266]
as long as we have enough people going
[267]
there given the gasoline prices that
[269]
have risen but that's another Trend that
[271]
you've seen you said a little bit of a
[272]
pullback on those online sales and More
[274]
Store traffic we are seeing a pickup in
[276]
traffic everyone wants to engage in
[279]
Social engagements and activities
[280]
shopping is an activity and we're seeing
[283]
whether it's friends going out to buy
[285]
new dresses friends going out to get
[287]
something to drink somewhere all of a
[289]
sudden they're going into stores and
[291]
buying things that they haven't had in
[292]
in the past styles of updated sizes of
[296]
change for people and The Innovation
[298]
product is there so I'm seeing a pickup
[301]
in traffic while a moderation in online
[303]
spending you want to give us one more
[305]
retailer that you think looks attractive
[306]
right here Ulta if you talk about makeup
[308]
you got to look at Ulta also Dana Tulsi
[311]
thank you so much thank you very much
