[3]
boeing's new mid-market airplane
[5]
or nma was widely expected to be a twin
[8]
aisle offering
[9]
but with the rising trend of using
[11]
single aisle aircraft for ever longer
[13]
flights
[14]
could boeing reconsider this strategy
[17]
speaking to simple flying dr joe leader
[19]
ceo of the airline passenger experience
[22]
association
[22]
or apex said he believes that single
[25]
isle could work
[26]
as long as it's comfortable to fly
[30]
boeing's gap in its lineup has been ripe
[32]
for a new product for several years
[34]
the niche that was previously filled by
[36]
the 757 and 767
[38]
has no replacement leaving a wide gap
[41]
between boeing's largest
[42]
737 and smallest 787
[46]
the nma colloquially known as the 797
[50]
has been an anticipated development for
[52]
many years
[53]
with narrowbody aircraft becoming ever
[55]
more capable in range
[57]
there's some movement in this niche but
[59]
not yet by boeing
[61]
speaking to simple flying dr joe leader
[64]
commented on the rising trend of
[65]
long-haul single aisle aircraft
[68]
telling us the following what the 787
[72]
was primer and a350 were primarily used
[75]
for over the past decade
[77]
i see single aisle aircraft really
[80]
taking a greater roll
[82]
over the upcoming decade i'm still
[84]
hopeful
[85]
for a boeing's um conceptual
[89]
newmarket aircraft but i've been hoping
[92]
on that
[93]
for many years and i i cannot wait to
[96]
see
[97]
the offering in the past the 797 has
[101]
been touted to be a smaller twin aisle
[103]
aircraft
[104]
capable of very long routes with lower
[106]
demand
[107]
but with boeing taking its designs back
[109]
to the drawing board
[111]
could a single isle a321 xlr competitor
[114]
be more the focus
[116]
at this point we just don't know boeing
[119]
could well stick to its plan of a twin
[121]
oil fast turnaround
[122]
point-to-point aircraft something to
[124]
replace the 767
[126]
or it could go more down the route of a
[128]
narrow body that builds beyond the 737
[131]
and fills the shoes of the 757 instead
[136]
airbus has somewhat cornered the
[137]
mid-market already with its long-range
[140]
a321lr and forthcoming a321xl
[144]
while these aircraft don't quite fulfill
[146]
the brief of an nma
[147]
they come very close and certainly a lot
[150]
closer than anything boeing has on the
[152]
table right now
[154]
at a recent kappa live event steve
[157]
udvarhazy chairman of air lease
[159]
corporation
[160]
noted that boeing lacks a true
[161]
competitor to the a321
[164]
saying for an airline that needs
[166]
aircraft in the 200 seat or 200 seat
[168]
plus category and can operate a mixed
[171]
fleet of a320s and a321s
[174]
that is where i think boeing right now
[176]
has an achilles heel
[178]
the max 10 is not an a321 direct
[181]
competitor
[182]
it just doesn't quite have the same
[183]
capabilities as the a321 in many
[186]
areas whether it's cargo range seating
[189]
capacity
[190]
it doesn't quite match up that's
[192]
something that boeing cannot really
[194]
address unless they develop a brand new
[196]
airplane
[197]
and then that seven eight years away so
[200]
for the time being
[201]
i think we see airbus having a 60 65
[204]
market share in the single aisle
[208]
so whether boeing develops a dual or
[210]
single isle competitor is
[212]
still up for debate however the
[214]
economics of operating single aisle
[216]
aircraft on the long haul are beginning
[218]
to show
[219]
dr leader believes that a single aisle
[221]
could work for boeing
[222]
but only if it's a comfortable ride
[227]
do you think boeing's new middle of the
[228]
market aircraft should be single aisle
[231]
or twin aisle
