[22]
Welcome to this five-part series on how to get聽 started with barefoot running and movement. So this聽聽
[29]
quick five-part series will cover the introduction聽- which is where we're here right now, beginner,聽聽
[34]
intermediate, advanced, and expert barefoot聽 training techniques and exercises and stuff.
[40]
I'd recommend listening first to this introduction聽 because, I'm just going to go over some frequently聽聽
[44]
asked questions, you know some tips, tricks, and聽 other things that you should know before you get聽聽
[49]
started with like barefoot running and training. I bought a pair of barefoot shoes on a whim about聽聽
[53]
four years ago and made a complete 180 in my lower聽 body's health. I had seriously problematic gait聽聽
[60]
and it looked ridiculous. Before I continue I would聽 just like to say that I'm doing a sort of giveaway聽聽
[66]
of any pair of Vivobarefoot shoes that you want,聽 as kind of a celebration of 1,000 subscribers!
[73]
To enter simply ensure that you've done all that聽 silly like and subscribe stuff as usual, and then聽聽
[80]
just drop a comment down below why you would like聽 to win a pair of Vivobarefoot shoes and which聽聽
[84]
ones, and this is available globally, to everyone! So just drop the comment and after 200 entries聽聽
[90]
a bot will randomly select a winner and we'll go聽 from there. Why get started with barefoot moving?
[98]
Well, many people have covered this very聽 in-depth, so I'm just going to keep it brief.
[101]
Basically our movement evolved over hundreds upon聽 thousands of years, without plush, cushiony soles.
[109]
And suddenly now we have chunks of foam underneath聽 our feet, severely altering our biomechanics聽聽
[115]
since childhood. Wonder why scoliosis, posture聽 problems, and all these other ailments have聽聽
[121]
arisen? A really great book is Born To Run -聽 it's a stunning read and I'd highly recommend it.
[127]
okay let's do some FAQ and other things to know聽 and let's start with question one: What is heel聽聽
[133]
striking? Well, it's pretty self-explanatory.聽 It's when you're running or jogging or聽聽
[138]
walking, and your heel strikes first. Try聽 this - just stand up and jog in place. You know.聽聽
[149]
Does your heel strike first, or does your forefoot聽 strike first? Chances are, you're not landing on聽聽
[155]
your heels like this. So why do we do this when we聽 run? When did this become a thing? All this shock聽聽
[162]
from the impact travels up our leg, to our hips, but聽 like you know, really concentrates in the joints,聽
[168]
the knees, the ankles, the bones, tendons, ligaments聽 take the stress, instead of on the forefoot, where聽聽
[174]
the muscles take all the impact. You know they聽 work as shock absorbers like muscles should.
[179]
Don't worry if you do this currently - I was聽 literally the worst offender of this possible.
[184]
It's kind of weird because footwear kind of聽 made it okay to do this by adding like all聽聽
[190]
this inches of foam to absorb shock. So how long聽 does it take to get used to barefoot running?
[196]
Well of course everyone's different, but it only聽 took me a couple days or weeks to adapt first to聽聽
[203]
the walking, a couple months to adapt to like聽 the jogging and the running, and heavy movements聽聽
[209]
after about six months, and about six months to one聽 year to fully integrate, you know, barefoot into my聽聽
[216]
lifestyle. You know just every activity and whatnot. Personally I did exercise and training about three聽聽
[221]
to five days a week, and walk daily in barefoot聽 shoes this sounds like a lot, but it's really as simple聽聽
[228]
as just buying some barefoot shoes and walking in聽 them all the time, and then you know maybe getting聽聽
[233]
some barefoot running shoes, you know, after聽 a month or something. Do I need to do barefoot聽聽
[237]
exercises to transition? And definitely not. Like聽 I said you can just switch to barefoot wear right聽聽
[243]
away, but if you're doing like serious amounts聽 of like movement, jogging, running, training, ahh聽聽
[250]
start slowly, you know. Do I need barefoot聽 shoes to transition effectively? And also no.
[256]
You can do of course everything entirely barefoot,聽 but you know it'll be quite a shock at first, trust聽聽
[263]
me! Don't your feet get cuts from the street聽 or glass? No I've actually never had a cut from聽聽
[269]
glass or something like nasty on the streets - I've聽 had a couple of splinters you know, in my feet from聽聽
[274]
like thorns, or you know real terrain, but that's聽 actually pretty rare - you'd really be surprised how聽聽
[280]
quickly your feet adapt to barefoot walking and聽 develop that thick skin. So what about returning聽聽
[285]
to regular shoes per-se? Well now honestly they聽 feel really odd. It's not like I can't wear聽聽
[292]
them, but I immediately notice how restricted聽 the footbed is, and unnatural the feeling is. You聽聽
[299]
can always go back but once you've switched聽 over honestly I doubt you'll want to go back.
[306]
So let me get into some barefoot running tips, just to help your transition kind of go smoothly
[311]
here. So number one! Start slowly. Yeah you may聽 be the kind of person that just likes to jump聽聽
[317]
into things and also just like push through聽 pains and aches. "The psychology is savagery!聽
[322]
Remember this: Stay hard at all times!" Do not聽 do this - you'll run a pretty high chance of聽聽
[329]
injuring yourself or something, you know. Instead,聽 literally start 100 meters at a time, or less!
[336]
The beginner section to barefoot running will cover a lot of exercises聽聽
[340]
that are really great, and you don't even聽 have to leave home for those. Tip number two:聽
[346]
Get some footwear! Barefoot doesn't mean like聽 no shoes at all. This can help the beginning聽聽
[351]
where your feet are, you know, sensitive聽 and soft. This could be something from Vibram,聽
[356]
Vivobarefoot, Wildlings, Merrell, Xero, or any聽 of the other brands dedicated to barefoot shoes.
[363]
Treat yourself! Give yourself foot massages, foam聽 rolling sessions, baths, good nutrition, hydration -
[371]
this is really all about growth, personal,聽 development, and loving our bodies. One step at聽聽
[378]
a time but hey, let's lead the charge on the body聽 revolution here! Don't force it if - you're having聽聽
[383]
issues with pains, aches, discomfort... take a break!聽 This can be for a day, a week, maybe even a month.聽聽
[391]
The body really takes time to adapt and the聽 worst thing you can do is just force it and聽聽
[396]
try too hard. Just let it be and let nature take聽 its course. And number five: Don't be afraid! While聽聽
[404]
I'm saying like don't force aches and pains聽- they're completely natural to have. Chances聽聽
[410]
are that you've been subject to improper footwear聽 since birth, like all of us here. The body will have聽聽
[416]
some resistance at first and really it'll take聽 some time to adapt and get used to this. Just
[421]
watch your results grow from you know, six months聽 or beyond. So yeah that's the introductory section聽聽
[428]
on just how to get started with barefoot running. The next section will cover how to get started聽聽
[432]
with barefoot running with some basic techniques聽 and exercises that you could just literally do聽聽
[438]
from home, so no need to go outside to the forest聽 or anything like this. If you like this video聽聽
