Channel: The FAFSA Guru
[0]
hey everyone I'm Tina otherwise known as the FAFSA聽
guru and I'm excited to share three FAFSA secrets聽聽
[6]
with you today that can get you more financial aid聽
before I do that I just want to give you a little聽聽
[11]
bit of background information about me I went into聽
business for myself a couple of years ago as an聽聽
[16]
educational consultant after working in the field聽
of higher education for over 20 years in the area聽聽
[22]
of admissions and financial aid and student聽
advising and I saw a really big gap between聽聽
[27]
student and family needs for college planning聽
help and what was actually out there available聽聽
[33]
for services most educational consultants charge聽
quite a bit in fees and you have to sign up for聽聽
[39]
hefty packages to get any kind of guidance so聽
what I wanted to do is offer more affordable聽聽
[45]
services for the average family that doesn't want聽
to sign on for hundreds of dollars of services so聽聽
[52]
I created the FAFSA guru and what I do is one on聽
one college planning guidance and FAFSA assistance聽聽
[58]
for students and families based on whatever their聽
new needs are so this could be filling out a FAFSA聽聽
[65]
form could be completing a college application聽
guiding them through the process whatever their聽聽
[71]
needs are I can help them with and they can kind聽
of piece it together and work with me as they go聽聽
[77]
so they don't have to sign on for any expensive聽
package so now that I told you a little bit about聽聽
[83]
me let's talk about the three secrets the first聽
is in order to access the most financial aid it聽聽
[90]
is crucial that you fill out the FAFSA as early as聽
possible the nude date for this year the 2018-2019聽聽
[101]
FAFSA is October 1st normally it's been January聽
but this year they're doing October 1st that is聽聽
[107]
the earliest that you can file the FAFSA if you or聽
your child are planning on starting college July聽聽
[113]
30th 2018 or after so with financial aid it's聽
kind of like the early bird gets too long the聽聽
[120]
earlier you apply and fill out the FAFSA the聽
more money you can get federal financial aid聽聽
[125]
tends to deplete as time goes on so that's secret聽
number one secret number two if you are a parent聽聽
[132]
and you are helping your child fill out the FAFSA聽
because they're going off to college and they have聽聽
[138]
money in their bank accounts they have assets聽
money that maybe they've saved or they've been聽聽
[142]
given to help them pay for college you want to聽
transfer the money from their account into your聽聽
[147]
account because FAFSA calculations expect that聽
any asset students have they can contribute 20%聽聽
[154]
of that money towards their college education聽
versus about five point six four percent of聽聽
[160]
parent assets so it would be wise to transfer聽
money from their savings accounts into your聽聽
[167]
accounts to kind of protect a little bit more of聽
that money and the nice thing for you parents in聽聽
[171]
terms of assets the home that you live in is聽
not counted nor is retirement so they're not聽聽
[177]
going to look at either of those things as assets聽
and then third the last secret for accessing more聽聽
[183]
financial aid is that you can actually appeal your聽
award letter that the college gives to you not a聽聽
[190]
lot of people know this so let's say you or your聽
student gets the financial aid award letter back聽聽
[195]
from the college and it's just not enough money to聽
help pay for their needs you can actually write a聽聽
[202]
letter to the financial aid office appealing聽
your financial aid award now typically this聽聽
[207]
is ideal if you have extenuating circumstances聽
that are not reported on the FAFSA FAFSA just聽聽
[213]
asks a lot of basic financial information and they聽
don't really dig deeper in terms of you know was聽聽
[219]
a parent or or the student laid off was there聽
a big financial circumstance that happened in聽聽
[226]
the family that is not reported on the FAFSA so聽
especially if you have extenuating circumstances聽聽
[232]
appealing that financial aid award letter is聽
crucial you just simply just send a letter to聽聽
[238]
the financial aid office and offer any supporting聽
documentation you can if there's been a change or聽聽
[243]
a reduction in income and if there has been then a聽
lot most financial aid offices actually set aside聽聽
[249]
a certain pool of money specifically for people聽
who appeal their financial aid awards so that's聽聽
[256]
the third secret I hope you find those helpful聽
and I just want to share with you that I'm going聽聽
