Why you should lease!! and not buy your next camera! - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[0]
hey guys thanks for tuning in for
[1]
another video this one is coming from a
[4]
comment from somebody on one of my
[5]
videos one of my videos on my Sony FX 9
[9]
where the person was asking how did I go
[13]
about figuring out how to invest in a
[15]
camera well my thoughts when I was
[16]
investing in this camera and this got me
[21]
thinking actually started wait one
[23]
second
[23]
first off gonna go to my sponsor for
[26]
this video side launch brewery not
[29]
really my sponsor but I really love
[31]
their beers and they're basically across
[33]
a field from my house you know like a
[35]
kilometer away side launch this is our
[40]
Mountain lager and it's gonna enjoy this
[43]
why we shoot this remember to support
[47]
local guys support your local
[48]
restaurants to pull gyro support your
[50]
local brewery support their local
[52]
businesses especially during this time
[54]
with these crazy things going on local
[58]
try to stay within your community and
[59]
support your local everything you can
[62]
okay back to the video so the fx9 look
[67]
at this it says a back on it right now
[69]
it is I talked about in a video before
[72]
the back is big but I never showed it it
[74]
is makes the camera ridiculously big
[78]
like obnoxiously big I don't understand
[82]
why it had to be so much bigger than the
[84]
one that's in the fs7 but this is the
[86]
back this is the only way you're gonna
[88]
be able to do raw output to an external
[90]
recorder I will be using another
[93]
third-party V mote back when I'm not
[95]
doing raw output cuz I rise out there
[97]
yet and I won't be doing all the time so
[99]
anyways how did I go about investing in
[104]
this camera and this really got me
[106]
thinking about something I wanted to do
[109]
a video on for a while and that is
[112]
investing in cameras or camera gear in
[115]
general and how do you think about that
[117]
stuff and what are the best steps and
[119]
what are the things I've learned over
[121]
the years or 15 years of doing my own
[123]
freelance work 20 years working doing
[126]
video work I've owned a lot of cameras
[129]
these are different cameras I've owned
[131]
behind me there's other cameras
[133]
they have sold and some were great
[136]
investments and some were not good
[138]
investments and some made me money and
[140]
some cost me money so what are those
[143]
things you need to think about when you
[145]
are looking at investing in a camera or
[148]
camera gear so I'm gonna give you guys a
[151]
bit of advice some things that were
[152]
taught to me from another DP that gave
[154]
me some great advice years ago and
[157]
things in general just when you're doing
[160]
work and especially when you're starting
[161]
out so one of those things if you're
[163]
trying to work as a as a DOP
[166]
as a camera operator and you're going
[170]
out on jobs now if you live in a city if
[174]
you're in a big city core and there's a
[176]
lot of rental houses things might be a
[178]
little bit easier for you to get access
[179]
to cameras for rentals then myself I'm
[182]
about two hours away from the closest
[184]
city in Toronto and that's where the
[187]
majority of the rental houses are for me
[188]
to go do rentals and stuff it's a lot of
[190]
work for me to go down and pick up a
[192]
rental and bring it back if I'm shooting
[193]
stuff up here if I'm shooting stuff in a
[194]
city it's a little bit different it may
[196]
be a little bit easier but I myself the
[199]
way I work on the way that my business
[201]
works is that I go out as an
[203]
owner-operator okay so an owner
[205]
operators typically somebody that goes
[207]
out with their own camera gear so I go
[209]
with my own camera package my own
[211]
lighting package my own audio package my
[214]
own grip package and for the most part I
[216]
would say 90% of my jobs that's what I'm
[219]
using that's what I'm getting paid for
[221]
that's my day rate is going towards its
[224]
current or towards my whole package I'm
[225]
coming of that I very seldom go out as
[228]
just a camera operator using other
[229]
cameras and there's some times where we
[232]
need to read some different gear but a
[233]
lot of jobs I do I don't need that and
[236]
if I gonna be doing that more and more I
[238]
would invest in that gear so I'll tell
[241]
you what one of my thought patterns of
[243]
how you're thinking about getting that
[244]
gear so one of the things straight up if
[248]
you are renting a camera more than twice
[253]
a month you likely could be paying for a
[257]
lease for that camera monthly for the
[259]
same price or less okay so this happened
[263]
to me years ago what I was working with
[265]
the
[266]
300 the c300 Mark one and that was my
[268]
main camera and there was a bunch of
[271]
different jaws you were coming out with
[272]
and we were going out with we needed a B
[274]
camera and we were renting the c100 and
[277]
the c100 I think at the time then was
[280]
costing us a hundred and fifty bucks per
[283]
day for rental now can in that time and
[287]
Canon still does this in Canada I'm not
[289]
sure about the u.s. or in other parts of
[291]
the world but Ken offers 0% financing
[293]
and I had bought my c300 on credit was
[299]
paying it off by didn't do the financing
[301]
cause I didn't know about that the c100
[303]
I looked at the financing forward and it
[305]
was something like $250 a month so in
[308]
two rental days I more than made up that
[311]
cost for the rental and I had it the
[314]
rest of the month to be able to use it I
[315]
could use it on any of my job as a B cam
[317]
I could use it as an a cam on some
[319]
different jobs and I would at the end of
[322]
a three-year lease for 0% financing I
[325]
would own the camera and this was
[328]
advised to me by another DP I was saying
[330]
and it really got me thinking about how
[332]
I purchase geared and how I thought
[334]
about purchasing gear so the idea is one
[339]
first looking it that way are you
[341]
renting camera gear all time is it worth
[343]
it if you're renting stuff all the time
[346]
and it's being paid for it be a better
[349]
investment for you to buy that camera or
[351]
to lease set camera and have that money
[353]
so it's an asset you're gonna own that
[354]
camera at the end instead of letting the
[356]
rental house hold the camera so I really
[359]
recommend and I am really for leasing my
[363]
camera gear at least a ton of it for me
[365]
like typically have a bunch of different
[366]
leases going on the same time right now
[369]
I am leasing this Sony FX 9 I'm doing a
[374]
lease off of it it's actually at least
[375]
through Sony's own finance and they do
[379]
0% financing so for this camera right
[381]
here the FX 9 with the back with this
[383]
lens with this body not some of the
[385]
other accessories the cost for this
[387]
camera altogether was 25k okay that's
[390]
with HST you attacks here in Canada with
[394]
my financing that I got through Sony for
[397]
0% financing I'm paying this off in two
[399]
years
[400]
and my payments per month are $900
[404]
okay this camera rents right now I think
[407]
it's renting for 350 or 450 a day for
[412]
the body with some lenses and stuff
[414]
without the back without the lens so you
[418]
can see very quickly and typically
[419]
before what's going on right now if
[422]
you're watching at this time during the
[424]
Lake Ovid crisis I don't have very many
[427]
sheets going on
[428]
very few shoots and that's the majority
[431]
of production world but before this
[433]
stuff and what I can see happening after
[434]
that I typically had three to five
[437]
shoots a week on average three shoots a
[439]
week using my own camera so this pays
[443]
itself off very quickly that way 0%
[446]
financing two years I will own the
[447]
camera when I bought my Epis Evan I
[450]
leased that I didn't do to Sony finance
[452]
they didn't have the different financing
[454]
at that time but I did financing on it I
[456]
did it over three years and it was well
[460]
worth the investment now one of the
[462]
other things to think about I don't know
[464]
these things are true in the US or other
[466]
parts of the world because I know in the
[467]
US your tax write-offs are a little bit
[469]
different than they are in Kandla but in
[471]
Canada when we buy camera equipment we
[473]
have to depreciate that camera equipment
[475]
so if I spend 25k this year on this
[477]
camera outright I can't write off that
[480]
25k this year I have to spread that out
[484]
over years and typically a camera used
[486]
to be over five years I think they've
[488]
changed it to three years but sometimes
[490]
you are flipping that camera before that
[493]
time so for a two-year lease for me that
[497]
every month of that lease that payment
[499]
is a full write-off okay this is me
[501]
leasing back the company out of the end
[503]
I will own the camera it's a four F is
[505]
very simple so financially even if it's
[508]
not zero percent financing for me to buy
[510]
a big-ticket item like this it is better
[513]
for me tax wise in Canada to finance it
[517]
than to pay it outright even if I had
[519]
the cash this is better for my cash flow
[521]
of my business to buy it like that and
[525]
one of the ways I really like to think
[527]
about it is when you know what your
[529]
monthly payments are gonna be this is
[531]
one of the key things to think about
[532]
when you're working as
[533]
or operator or if you have a small
[535]
production company like myself you
[538]
really need to be thinking about is this
[541]
tool that you're buying is this camera
[544]
you know these lights are these grips
[546]
stuff that you're buying is it worth you
[549]
getting is it going to enhance the work
[552]
you're doing I know people gonna pay for
[553]
it or is it gonna pay itself off
[556]
okay so there's lots of great things to
[558]
think about when you're looking at
[559]
camera gear and we all like myself loved
[561]
camera gear I love tech and I love
[563]
things for myself for the business work
[567]
I do a red camera as much as I love the
[570]
image of a red camera it is not the
[572]
right tool for me it might be the right
[575]
tool for you it might be the right tool
[576]
for other people in the tent of work
[577]
they're doing but for myself I know it's
[579]
not I know I can't charge extra for that
[581]
and people aren't willing to pay for it
[583]
extra and it's actually the workflow is
[585]
a little bit harder and there's no
[587]
autofocus what there's a lot of
[588]
different things and the reasons why I
[590]
would go with a fx9
[592]
over a red for myself now that could be
[596]
different to the other people and you
[597]
got to think about what is the purpose
[600]
of your using the camera for what are
[601]
your tools you're using it for the right
[603]
camera for me is might not be the right
[605]
camera for you and same with other
[607]
camera and lighting and grip equipment
[610]
but what do you really need to think
[612]
about what I'm trying to get to here is
[613]
that monthly payment if you don't think
[616]
that is gonna pay yourself off it's not
[618]
worth you to yourself to have that
[621]
you're investing in something you think
[623]
well maybe if I buy this camera maybe if
[625]
I buy a read people will think I am
[628]
worth more and I'll get more work that's
[630]
a bad way to think about it you need to
[632]
think about is it something that's gonna
[634]
actually help you and elevate you and
[637]
and are you being asked for that camera
[639]
are you being asked us tough that's one
[640]
way to look at stuff as well when you're
[642]
working as a owner operator as a DOP if
[644]
somebody keeps saying to you all the
[646]
time Brian I want you to be shooting now
[648]
on I don't like so many we want all
[652]
those stuff shut Alexa Minnie I said
[653]
okay well maybe I go out and I rented
[655]
like so many first couple jobs but then
[658]
if I'm getting a bunch of jobs you know
[661]
week after week we need Brian we want
[664]
you to shoot Alexa Minnie all these
[667]
things
[667]
and I am say okay well this isn't it
[669]
cost an extra $1,000 a day to pay for
[672]
that alexxa mini rental at a certain
[674]
point if things keep going that way you
[675]
get to look at that things and think you
[677]
know what I'd be better off investing in
[680]
my own Alexa Mini and buying that myself
[683]
and having that as a tool that I have in
[686]
my arsenal and be able to use that
[688]
that's a one way to think about things
[690]
and seeing what you need what you have
[692]
and what can make you money and for
[695]
myself why I love owning a camera over
[697]
renting a camera I think what I would
[699]
even do if I lived right by rental
[701]
houses is why would owner camera it's
[702]
like when I own a camera and I'm paying
[704]
off on jobs that are paying me and I'm
[707]
that's how I'm covering the cost of the
[709]
camera the great thing is now I have a
[712]
camera all the time or cameras like I'm
[715]
shooting this with I have a bunch of
[718]
different cameras that I have all the
[719]
time so if I want to go out and do a
[721]
spec piece for myself and shoot that I
[724]
can do it I don't need to go out and
[726]
rent gear for that if somebody wants to
[728]
come to me and says Brian listen we we
[729]
have this job it's we don't have the
[732]
budget for stuff but it's a really cool
[734]
job do you want to do it you want to
[735]
help us out with that I can go do that
[737]
because it's not costing me extra I'm
[739]
not going out to rent all this gear I'm
[740]
not going out to rent all its lighting
[741]
gear all this other grip gear I have
[743]
that I've invested in and it's already
[745]
being paid off by other work so that's
[747]
another great way to think about how
[749]
you're buying camera gear how are you're
[751]
buying lighting gear and everything so
[753]
just to wrap up on investing in camera
[756]
equipment camera gear cameras themselves
[758]
what I think the kind of key things to
[760]
think about is how much are you renting
[763]
cameras to use them should you be buying
[765]
a camera instead of renting it you
[767]
should be looking at leasing a camera
[769]
see what that monthly would cost you to
[770]
lease a camera or leasing other camera
[772]
equipment I've leased lights I've leased
[775]
servers at least a bunch of different
[777]
things and I thought about that stuff in
[779]
that way is my cash flow enough is this
[781]
gonna help me enough to actually pay
[782]
that monthly and if it doesn't I
[784]
shouldn't be investing in it and third
[787]
is this actually gonna help you with
[789]
your business is it's gonna bring in
[790]
more business for you is this gonna make
[793]
you money and not just cost you money is
[795]
it not just some cool piece of kit to
[797]
have with you that you want to have but
[799]
actually you know financially wise it
[800]
doesn't make any
[802]
these days right now this is more
[804]
important than ever to think about with
[805]
lot of jobs drying up or a lot of jobs
[807]
going away because we're not allowed to
[810]
go out and shoot or we are able to go
[812]
out and do suits in some cases but much
[814]
different than we have before and we
[816]
don't know how long this is gonna take
[817]
I believe when things come back some
[820]
production is gonna be booming but
[823]
there's gonna be different ways around
[824]
it and I think the more you have
[827]
equipment yourself the more you can be
[829]
flexible and go and do things the more
[831]
you can do stuff at different rates
[832]
because you own equipment the more
[834]
valuable you're gonna be in this new
[837]
coming environment so thanks so much
[839]
guys for watching this video let me know
[841]
what you think in the comments let me
[842]
know how you guys look about investing
[845]
in your camera gear and your camera
[846]
equipment let me know what you think
[849]
about the idea of leasing let me know in
[851]
the states I think can you write off
[852]
everything in one year or not I thought
[855]
that was the true but maybe I'm
[856]
completely wrong thanks so much guys
[858]
we'll see you on the next video
[868]
you
