How to build a Tesla in your Garage!! - Electric SuperCar - YouTube
Channel: JerryRigEverything
[0]
okay so you've built this whole thing in
[2]
your garage right
[3]
yes and does it move yet yes it does can
[5]
we try it let's do it
[15]
so during quarantine some people sit and
[17]
scroll on their phones
[18]
some people bake bread but this guy
[21]
built an entire electric car in his
[24]
garage
[25]
let's get started
[30]
[Music]
[32]
so in the simplest of terms how in the
[35]
world
[36]
does all of this work so the simplest of
[39]
terms we've got a tesla motor electric
[41]
motor
[41]
run by batteries let me show you so back
[44]
here we've got the
[45]
tesla motor that's kind of the uh
[47]
powertrain of everything
[48]
a lot of horsepower this is the high
[50]
voltage cables that's where we get our
[52]
power
[52]
power from the battery packs all right
[55]
so we have a tesla motor but are we
[56]
using tesla battery modules
[59]
no no we're not so how does that work so
[62]
uh tesla just needs kind of a round of
[63]
400 volt uh battery power
[66]
so i'm actually using lg chem batteries
[68]
uh 12 battery modules
[70]
essentially six in each pack i've got
[71]
two packs that gives me roughly 400
[73]
volts
[74]
what did you have to do to make the
[75]
tesla motor work good question so
[78]
the tesla motor we need a controller and
[80]
so there's only a few companies out
[81]
there that make
[82]
a controller for the tesla motor this is
[84]
the controller here and
[86]
uh basically it sends can signals to the
[89]
motor that kind of tell it
[90]
how to run so i've been watching a lot
[92]
of your videos and i think i can point
[94]
out
[95]
most of the major components so should
[97]
we see how far i get before
[99]
okay let's see what's up so inside of
[102]
this
[102]
car we have the front battery pack here
[105]
which you said was
[106]
lg kim batteries right and so these
[110]
batteries
[111]
these orange cables are the high voltage
[113]
lines and they are running back
[115]
to the rear battery pack which we'll get
[117]
to in a second
[118]
this here is the front radiator which
[122]
has
[122]
liquid inside that cools down the
[125]
batteries
[126]
so far so good okay and then these high
[129]
voltage lines
[130]
are gonna come across through the center
[133]
of the vehicle you can see the orange
[135]
tubing right there
[136]
and those high voltage lines come all
[138]
the way back here to the second battery
[140]
pack which we have a nice little on off
[142]
switch there
[143]
and they also provide power to the rear
[146]
motor
[147]
which i think sums up all the big parts
[150]
so tell me about the frame though
[151]
because obviously this frame wasn't
[153]
designed
[154]
for the tesla motor right that is
[156]
correct so this was designed for a honda
[158]
accord drivetrain
[159]
so how to do a few modifications this
[161]
goes a little faster than a honda accord
[163]
right
[163]
yes quite a bit faster and how fast have
[166]
you taken it so far
[167]
probably not above 60. whatever you can
[169]
do in a parking lot
[170]
okay all right let's talk about the low
[172]
voltage system for a second because i
[174]
want to know how that works
[176]
so low voltage uh this is kind of the my
[179]
center node of everything
[180]
i've done this somewhat old school so
[182]
everything's kind of based on relays
[184]
this is all the things to control
[186]
headlights turn signals
[188]
on off switch hazards and so where is
[191]
the 12-volt battery at
[193]
so that's on the other side here so we
[195]
have the 12-volt battery so power comes
[198]
into the car from the wall where's the
[201]
plug-in
[202]
so this is my uh vehicle
[205]
kind of charge port this is still a work
[207]
in progress
[208]
duct tape is just part of the
[210]
masterpiece power comes from
[212]
the wall to the charge port right here
[214]
we've got this is our on-board charger
[216]
so this converts it from 220 volts
[219]
to roughly 400 volts that can charge the
[222]
battery
[222]
other than that you got your dc to dc
[224]
converter that's about the only other
[226]
kind of system and the reason we need a
[228]
high voltage and low voltage system is
[230]
because we're not going to have our
[231]
headlights and the horn
[232]
run off of 400 volts that would be
[235]
overkill
[236]
so we have two systems one to run the
[238]
lower power stuff and then one to run
[240]
the motor and where we need you know all
[242]
of the big power speaking of big power
[244]
these wheels are insane
[245]
check this out so are these from a honda
[247]
accord as well no
[249]
are they part of the tesla system no so
[252]
the the rotors
[253]
the suspension that's all part of the
[255]
tesla system
[256]
the wheels are not the wheels are just
[259]
uh
[259]
what fit the car so they're 19-inch rims
[262]
325
[263]
30 19. so this is the rear battery pack
[266]
here
[267]
front battery pack over here and we have
[269]
one battery cell or i guess one battery
[272]
module
[273]
right here and we're gonna weigh it and
[274]
see how many how many of these are in
[276]
the car
[277]
and 12 in the car and this weighs
[284]
40 pounds oh my gosh so 12 times 40
[288]
480 pounds worth of batteries
[291]
did you know that yeah it all came on
[294]
one pallet
[295]
it was very heavy so even though this
[297]
whole contraption is much
[299]
lighter than a tesla the batteries still
[302]
make up the bulk of the weight because
[304]
the frame doesn't weigh that much right
[308]
okay so you've built this whole thing in
[310]
your garage right yes
[311]
and doesn't move yet yes it does can we
[313]
try it let's do it
[314]
okay sweet i trust it duct tape and
[317]
everything
[317]
let's go
[323]
start so basically that kicks on their
[325]
12-volt system which
[327]
turns on the controller controller turns
[329]
on the contactors for the high voltage
[332]
and the engine is revving right now
[333]
right it's good to go the only sound you
[335]
can hear
[336]
is essentially the coolant pump
[341]
this thing is sweet all right let's go
[344]
[Music]
[351]
this is so small it's almost like
[353]
getting in dan's roadster
[355]
all right so we are missing a couple
[356]
things
[358]
like a windshield
[368]
all right i'm ready
[398]
[Music]
[400]
so your problem isn't power your problem
[402]
is traction yes
[403]
you can't you can't stick to the ground
[406]
long enough to actually get full speed
[408]
yes that is true so right now we are at
[411]
about two-thirds power
[413]
so we're at about 340 uh kilowatts
[416]
so it can go up to 620. 475. so 620
[420]
horsepower
[421]
all right so even though it's cold how
[423]
what is it like 32 degrees right now
[425]
it's like freezing
[426]
even though it's cold we're gonna try to
[428]
see how fast we can accelerate and see
[429]
what the 0-60 time is
[436]
the tires are just gone like as soon as
[438]
it starts spinning that's on me
[439]
okay okay it's the driver round two
[452]
yeah getting out of the seat is much
[453]
easier than getting in it
[456]
so like we mentioned earlier there are
[457]
two battery packs and they are supplying
[459]
enough volts to this
[460]
motor it is overdoing it on the power
[463]
side of things
[464]
we're just losing traction with how
[466]
powerful this is
[467]
you ready oh my gosh
[471]
that's insane that's incredible
[474]
every time huh well if you wanted to
[477]
yeah
[478]
when you use a tesla motor what do you
[480]
get so again it's kind of the controller
[482]
the motor is a motor very powerful motor
[485]
the controller is kind of what allows
[486]
you to apply that power
[488]
so depending on what controller you have
[490]
what settings you have that kind of
[491]
allows you to
[492]
do kind of whatever you want that's
[494]
incredible
[499]
so basically in here we have the tesla
[502]
motor but we have none of the tesla
[504]
safety precautions which
[505]
makes it a whole lot more fun
[511]
how would traction control work if you
[514]
had
[514]
if you wanted it i guess we would need
[516]
wheel speed sensors in the front
[518]
to kind of make sure that it knows when
[520]
the back wheels are spinning faster in
[522]
the front
[522]
so right now when he peels out the tires
[525]
are slipping but the computer has no
[527]
idea because there's no sensors where
[528]
the tires are at
[530]
which for some people would be an
[532]
inconvenience
[534]
i kind of like it though i'll tell you
[537]
the only thing that's kind of
[538]
glitchy is the gear selector
[541]
oh you have to take off the steering
[543]
wheel to get out trust me
[546]
is that going to be fixed later on or is
[548]
that just how it is forever uh with this
[550]
car that's how it is forever
[554]
so can you imagine the steering wheel on
[555]
right so now if i take my foot off the
[558]
brake
[558]
on the gas rolling backwards a little
[560]
wow
[568]
all right
[571]
this is so smooth yeah
[574]
it's like because like in a normal car
[576]
you have everything protected and you
[578]
have
[579]
yes this is very this is like a skeleton
[581]
no
[582]
safety sensors i mean i have the
[584]
steering wheel falls off
[588]
this is sick
[592]
this is just like a roadster now that
[594]
we're both sufficiently frozen
[596]
what is the hardest part of building
[598]
your own
[599]
diy tesla i'd say it's perseverance i
[603]
think you gotta you gotta really love
[605]
the build
[606]
that's that's i think the hardest part
[607]
because you started with just like a
[608]
bare metal frame right
[610]
yeah there are so many components cause
[611]
like you have to think about it there's
[612]
like the steering there's the braking
[614]
there's the headlights tail lights
[616]
there's so many different parts
[618]
to this thing are you a normal guy who
[619]
just decided to do this
[621]
are you an expert in vehicles pretty
[624]
normal guy
[625]
uh to me like i said i just it's kind of
[628]
always a passion of mine to
[629]
build a car and so uh just
[632]
you know finally got the guts to do it
[634]
and uh i've loved it so again it's it's
[636]
all part of the process you know if you
[638]
don't like the build
[639]
you're not gonna like uh building and so
[641]
you wanted to build a car you didn't
[643]
want to start with something
[644]
old school like a mustang or something
[646]
you want to start with the hardest
[648]
components electrical components to work
[650]
with that's right so i know you're not
[652]
done with this project yet but on your
[654]
next project what would you change
[656]
i'd start from scratch like frame and
[659]
everything
[659]
i would i think that's been one of my
[661]
biggest challenges is trying to squeeze
[663]
things into space as they weren't
[664]
designed for
[672]
so we are back in the garage again and i
[673]
think one of the next steps
[675]
is this so what steps do you have left
[677]
to finish off the body
[679]
of your electric vehicle yeah so these
[682]
are all the panels that i have left to
[683]
put on
[684]
a lot of fiberglass work a lot of just
[686]
fitting the panels so it gets
[688]
gets it a good look all right let me
[690]
know down in the comments i'm sure he
[691]
already knows what color he's going to
[692]
end up painting it but let me know down
[693]
in the comments what
[694]
color you think you should paint it i'm
[696]
kind of thinking we should go
[697]
glow-in-the-dark
[699]
but that's just me anyway if you want to
[701]
see all of his videos about building
[702]
this whole contraption they're pretty
[704]
impressive i'll leave a link to his
[705]
channel over here
[706]
and to finish this off what is one word
[708]
of advice you would give
[710]
or one sentence of advice you would give
[711]
to someone who's going to attempt a
[712]
project like this themselves
[715]
perseverance stay with it it's worth it
[718]
it's the long haul thanks to for
[720]
watching we'll see you
[723]
[Music]
[728]
around
[731]
[Music]
[734]
[Applause]
[736]
you
