it's time now to talk cyber security
[2]
stocks let's bring in our expert panel
[4]
alex hammerstone director of advisory
[6]
solutions for trusted sec and
[9]
mark cash senior equity analyst at
[12]
morningstar it's great to have you both
[13]
on thank you very much alex what's
[15]
driving the interest in some of these
[17]
names obviously the colonial pipeline
[19]
hack that was a big one cyber security
[21]
work from home has been the ongoing
[24]
story alex tell me more
[26]
so i think all these things and i think
[28]
you know for a long time with cyber
[29]
security we were so focused on breaches
[31]
and people worried about losing their
[33]
data but now so many of these stories
[35]
have been focused on availability right
[36]
so these cyber events are taking down
[38]
systems and causing companies not to be
[41]
able to operate you know whether it's
[42]
the company themselves or one of their
[44]
vendors or third parties and so it's
[46]
having a huge effect it's not just the
[48]
fines uh and marketing issues that they
[50]
had from breaches it now really is
[52]
becoming very clear that this is
[54]
continuing to affect the actual
[56]
functioning of a lot of organizations
[60]
so mark as we take a look as the senior
[63]
equity analyst over at morningstar when
[64]
you look at the opportunities i think
[66]
that you had for example octa and palo
[70]
alto networks as names that you're
[72]
watching closely tell us why
[76]
yeah well thanks for having me on you
[77]
know i think some very good points very
[79]
brought up but you know it's a
[80]
heightened threat environment and then
[81]
you had
[83]
some recent you know executive orders
[85]
from the byte administration saying hey
[87]
we really need to uh
[89]
resolve this as best we can and so
[91]
they're pushed into something called the
[92]
zero trust security architecture which
[94]
means really get rid of implicit trust
[97]
really constantly check that people
[99]
should be allowed to do what they are
[101]
doing with inside networks and we think
[103]
a name like octa is hot you know highly
[106]
positioned towards that zero trust you
[108]
know they're the ones that are kind of
[109]
allowing you to get access to what you
[111]
need and only to what you should be able
[112]
to get
[114]
access to so you know things you'll use
[116]
every day like multi-factor
[117]
authentication single sign-on uh you
[119]
know octa is kind of working behind the
[121]
scenes to allow those things to happen
[122]
so we think they're they're very well
[124]
positioned uh with you know these new
[126]
things coming on they're all about you
[127]
know fighting fighting ransomware and
[128]
fighting the good fight
[131]
right and you know and we'll continue to
[133]
focus on some of these names cloud
[134]
security as you said alex um continues
[137]
to be a really huge issue as everything
[139]
is being moved to the cloud
[141]
and people like some of these names
[143]
right we just talked about octa
[145]
and palo alto z scout z scaler
[148]
crowdstrike are these companies all
[151]
similar but different are there some to
[153]
you that seem to stand out because of
[155]
either what they provide or management
[158]
or is there something is it just cyber
[161]
security like as a broad brush you know
[163]
or is there something special about some
[165]
of the companies over others
[167]
so those are absolutely all strong
[168]
companies i think when it comes to a lot
[170]
of these cyber security solutions you
[172]
know from my view it really ties back
[174]
into a lot of the staffing shortages
[175]
that we're seeing in the industry it's
[176]
very difficult to find cyber security
[179]
experts and personnel right now so any
[181]
of these companies is able to offer a
[183]
really broad solution and multiple
[185]
products so that the users and the
[187]
people that are running these things at
[189]
these companies are able to kind of
[191]
learn one interface and one uh kind of
[193]
one company's way of doing things i
[195]
think they're really gonna be poised for
[196]
success but certainly any of these
[198]
companies that continue to focus on
[200]
research and development
[202]
and their marketing i think are going to
[203]
continue to be very strong
[207]
and mark you talked about u.s federal
[209]
agencies need to move to the zero trust
[211]
which you mentioned before and that's
[213]
why you brought up some of the names
[214]
that you did
[215]
um is this
[217]
i mean
[217]
has this been going on anyway or was
[219]
this something super special brought on
[222]
by the biden administration and why is
[224]
it so important is it very very
[226]
important
[228]
it is important because we think it can
[229]
be a good spending driver for security
[232]
firms or for enterprises looking to
[234]
increase their security but it was going
[237]
on prior to the pandemic i believe the
[239]
way we look at this is the pandemic
[241]
occur and all of a sudden business is
[243]
worried about let's keep our workers
[245]
productive uh and so what that meant is
[247]
you probably
[249]
didn't understand the the gaping holes
[251]
in your security posture um and so that
[253]
was a you know feast for ransomware
[255]
attackers and other people were trying
[256]
you know malicious actors trying to do
[258]
breaches and so you know these
[261]
breaches were always happening but you
[263]
did not have to admit that you were a
[264]
breach victim
[266]
but some of these that really gotten the
[267]
public's attention you know colonial
[269]
pipeline jbs in the summer of this year
[272]
are really putting the spotlight on this
[274]
is a it's a very big problem um cyber
[277]
criminals are always making something
[278]
new um you're always going to be looking
[280]
for the you know next best threat
[282]
defense and
[283]
um
[285]
you know that's why we you know we we
[287]
pointed the names like octa and palo
[288]
alto and i think at a point you know
[291]
you kind of hit on before but
[293]
there's there's best of breed in all
[295]
these there's not one best security name
[297]
you there's a layered approach you know
[299]
no one's you can't just go with one
[301]
security guy so you look at crowdstrike
[302]
z-scale or octa of the peloton networks
[305]
they're all wonderful what they do and
[307]
so most organizations are going to have
[309]
to use various vendors anyway
[312]
yeah and you know just just to sort of
[314]
finalize that thought mark you you know
[316]
you do look at valuations though
[318]
and you know the dollars and cents and
[321]
the balance sheets and some are
[323]
i guess better positioned or
[325]
some are maybe overvalued or frothy and
[328]
you could just buy an etf and get all
[330]
the names that you both are saying are
[332]
very very important mark um tell me a
[335]
little bit are there you know valuation
[337]
issues with some of them or is it
[339]
doesn't matter because some are just
[340]
such great companies
[343]
yeah so evaluation is obviously critical
[345]
here in the space it's very high growing
[347]
um a couple names that we think it might
[349]
be slightly overvalued right now uh
[352]
trading kind of frothy or crowdstrike z
[354]
scaler you know fortinet and you know we
[356]
get it and we understand why people are
[359]
piling them you know cash into these
[361]
momentum stocks right now um
[364]
but we think kind of like the the growth
[366]
rates and the margin expectations are
[369]
pretty extreme when you look at what it
[370]
has to be you know five ten years from
[372]
now to grow into those valuations
[374]
but i think you look at these names and
[376]
the way to think about it is you look at
[378]
like the deferred revenue you look at
[380]
the remaining performance obligations
[381]
you get good visibility into the next
[383]
two three years these guys and what
[385]
you're expecting is they'll lock a
[387]
customer into the ecosystem you know as
[389]
mentioned they're building a platform
[390]
where they sell one product and they
[392]
sell you additional ones over time
[393]
that's why you see 120 plus dollar base
[396]
net retention rates um so a really
[398]
strong upselling opportunity over the
[400]
long run and so
[402]
some of these things got to kind of grow
[404]
into it i think there's also just been
[405]
some exuberance in the market for
[406]
security
[408]
i'm glad to speak with both of you mark
[410]
and alex thank you
