Channel: The List

If you were wondering how much the Below Deck crew takes home after every charter, it's
[5]
no small sum.
[6]
And while the tips alone are impressive, the crew's wages are pretty good too.
[10]
Here's everything you need to know about how much money the cast of Below Deck really makes.
[15]
According to Crewfinders, a website where people who want to work at sea can look for
[20]
employment, a chief stew like Kate Chastain stands to earn between $62,000 and $75,000
[26]
per charter season on the kind of yacht featured on Below Deck, most of which are in the 150-foot
[31]
range.
[32]
Meanwhile, second and third stews are reportedly pulling in about $50,000 per season, chefs
[38]
make anywhere between $52,000 and $72,000.
[42]
A bosun, or senior crewman, will earn up to $52,000, and deckhands will apparently pull
[48]
in between $40,000 to $52,000.
[51]
Last but most definitely not least, a captain's salary allegedly starts at $120,000.
[58]
In fact, it's estimated that Captain Lee himself could make up to $210,000 per year, depending
[64]
on the size of the boat he's manning, which isn't bad at all.
[67]
"Well, I was totally unprepared for it."
[70]
Luxury Yacht Group also suggests that wages could potentially be even higher, depending
[74]
on the experience of individual crew members.
[77]
For instance, the site reports that an experienced captain can make up to $25,000 a month.
[83]
Yes, in just one month.
[85]
Kate Chastain discussed yacht crew tips in an interview with Entertainment Tonight and
[89]
said,
[90]
"We're working not just eight-hour shifts...we're working pretty much around the clock...All
[95]
the days start to blur together.
[96]
And during the tip meeting, Captain Lee will say what we got and I'm always like, 'Is that
[101]
good?
[102]
I don’t know anymore…$3,000, are we happy with this?'"
[107]
Aside from the massive tips and generous wages, there are also some great perks to sailing
[112]
the high seas.
[113]
According to yacht crew recruitment company AYC, crews earn a tax-free income, enjoy generous
[119]
vacation allowances, and, naturally, the job involves living and working aboard a luxury
[123]
yacht with zero monthly bills to worry about.
[126]
Basically, it sounds like a pretty sweet deal.
[129]
During an AMA on Reddit, one of the show's producers revealed that cast members receive
[133]
a small fee for appearing.
[134]
He also explained,
[136]
"The contract between the cast and me is: 'Please make us a great show that people will
[141]
love, and please be fair in portraying who we are and what we do.'"
[145]
According to Below Deck Mediterranean star Colin Macy O'Toole, appearing on the show
[150]
is pretty much a dream job that he'd do all over again.
[153]
He told The Cheat Sheet,
[155]
"I'd probably start right out of college at age 22 and then put in about five years of
[160]
work on yachts...Depending on where you live, you could even save enough money to buy a
[164]
house."
[165]
This coincides with what a chief stew previously revealed in one of Refinery 29's Money Diaries
[171]
articles, disclosing that, because she didn't have to pay taxes, saving up to $4,500 a month,
[177]
from her annual salary of $72,000, was a piece of cake.
[181]
She revealed,
[182]
“I don’t have to pay taxes as I don’t reside in my home country, or anywhere for
[186]
more than six months at a time."
[189]
The work may be hard but, as Below Deck's own Ryhlee Gerber revealed, a short amount
[193]
of work on a yacht can pay for a lot of living expenses.
[197]
She told The Cheat Sheet,
[198]
"Of course I'm very frugal and live a pretty minimalist lifestyle.
[202]
But I was able to stretch the two months I worked…on Below Deck, plus about 60 days
[206]
working in Alaska."
[207]
"I think the longer you spend off a yacht, the harder it is to work on a yacht."
[213]
After working just four months, Gerber could apparently finance herself for an entire year,
[218]
which is more than a little impressive.
[220]
Gerber also hinted at certain perks being provided for the reality show crew when she
[224]
joked,
[225]
"If I wanted $60 face cream, it would be paid for."
[229]
Meanwhile, Macy-O’Toole told The Cheat Sheet,
[231]
"I'd never been to Europe so it was pretty exciting when I got the chance to travel through
[236]
the show too."
[237]
And bosun João Franco pointed out yet another perk when he said,
[241]
"The more luxurious boats have a gourmet chef that will cook all crew food every single
[246]
day!
[247]
The fridges and pantries are stocked with an endless supply of all you can think of."
[251]
All in all, it seems that being a yachtie has its fair share of benefits.
