How to dollar-cost average (DCA) in Belgium - YouTube

Channel: unknown

[6]
Hi everyone! It's Thomas from Curvo. Managing聽your emotions is tough when you actually invest聽聽
[11]
buying a stock and seeing its price drop is聽 super frustrating or you've sold a stock but聽聽
[16]
it continues rising for months thereafter so聽 investing at fixed intervals irrespective of聽聽
[23]
what prices are is a strategy called "dollar cost聽averaging". It's an escape from that emotional聽聽
[29]
rollercoaster unfortunately dollar cost averaging聽is particularly difficult to accomplish in Belgium聽聽
[36]
due to the high broker fees and taxes so we聽 experienced it firsthand when we actually聽聽
[40]
started investing and in this video we've split it聽up into three parts the first part will actually聽聽
[47]
first explain why dollar cost averaging is most聽likely a good strategy for your own investments聽聽
[53]
in the second part we're gonna get really into聽it we'll use an example to calculate the cost of聽聽
[58]
dollar cost averaging with different brokers in聽Belgium and then thirdly finally we'll show you聽聽
[65]
how Curvo actually solves the difficulties of聽 investing monthly for Belgians so dollar cost聽聽
[71]
averaging also known as DCA or euro cost averaging聽in Europe it's actually an investment strategy聽聽
[77]
where you invest periodically rather than save聽up a large lump sum that you invest in one go聽聽
[85]
so you invest at fixed times for instance every聽month regardless of what the markets are doing聽聽
[92]
so here are some reasons why you should actually聽DCA. You likely earn a monthly income so most聽聽
[98]
people get paid on a monthly basis this means聽that your finances progress at a monthly risk聽聽
[104]
so investing at the same frequency makes a lot聽of sense because it simplifies saving and also聽聽
[110]
just budgeting the second reason is you don't聽miss out on returns when you DCA so there's a聽聽
[115]
famous quote that says the best time to invest was聽actually yesterday the second best time is today聽聽
[122]
and so the financial markets have periods of high聽growth as well as crashes but the overall trend is聽聽
[129]
usually up so in most cases you're actually聽 better off investing as early as possible聽聽
[134]
rather than saving up and investing a larger聽 amount in one go because you miss out on all聽聽
[139]
of those potential returns while you're waiting聽to invest your money so by investing part of your聽聽
[145]
monthly salary as soon as you receive it you聽 force yourself to invest as early as you can聽聽
[150]
and there's no temptation to time the market so聽timing the market is incredibly difficult the聽聽
[156]
global economy is very complex and the financial聽markets are impacted by loads of factors that聽聽
[163]
are completely out of our hands and control for聽instance no one can predict the exact timing of聽聽
[169]
the COVID pandemic so when timing the markets聽the odds are usually stacked up against you you聽聽
[175]
may get lucky but in most cases you're actually聽going to be worse off by diligently investing聽聽
[180]
every month no matter what the markets are doing聽you kind of remove that temptation to time the聽聽
[186]
markets entirely and one big thing with DCA is聽that it's best suited for long-term investing so聽聽
[192]
consistent monthly investments are still the聽 best way to save for the long term as your career聽聽
[198]
progresses you're likely going to increase your聽monthly income and through DCA you can actually聽聽
[204]
easily increase your monthly contribution聽 to adapt to your new financial situation聽聽
[211]
one last thing with DCA is that it avoids聽 regret. Timing the market can be exciting聽聽
[217]
but it's also stressful you don't know whether聽you're buying or selling at the right time you'll聽聽
[222]
probably make a wrong decision at some聽 point which is often going to lead to regret聽聽
[227]
and so DCA kind of removes all those negative聽emotions from the process of investing聽聽
[232]
and it really does bring peace of mind because聽you're not thinking about that stock price聽聽
[238]
so you can actually do dollar cost averaging聽 through a broker in Belgium where you buy the聽聽
[243]
shares of the funds in your portfolio every single聽month there are quite a few drawbacks to this way聽聽
[249]
of investing though first one it's really costly聽 for small investment amounts so there are two聽聽
[254]
costs associated with DCA for a broker the first聽one is a broker fee so the broker charges a fee聽聽
[259]
for every investment that you make and the second聽one is the transaction tax so the Belgian tax聽聽
[266]
Belgian state imposes the tax on every transaction聽called the beurstaks or taxe boursi猫re or TOB
[272]
depending on how the broker interprets the聽 law the tax actually varies from 0.12 to 1.32聽聽
[279]
of the transaction so we actually calculated聽 the fees and taxes when you're doing dollar聽聽
[283]
cost averaging for several brokers in Belgium as聽an example we're investing 200 euros every single聽聽
[290]
month into VWCE, a popular fund for Belgian passive聽investors you can actually run the simulations聽聽
[296]
yourself in the spreadsheet that I've linked below聽in the show notes so as you can see in the results聽聽
[301]
there are like wide differences in the cost of聽 a DCA strategy in Belgium. Degiro is by far the聽聽
[308]
cheapest broker for VWCE with a total cost of just聽2 euros and 82 cents the second cheapest broker聽聽
[315]
in our comparison is Lynx which is over 28 times聽more expensive at 80 euros for the other brokers聽聽
[324]
as you can see from the table Bolero, Medirect and聽Keytrade you will spend at least 208 euros or 8.7聽聽
[332]
of your total contributions there are a couple聽 more drawbacks with going through a broker though聽聽
[338]
one there's always cash that's left that's聽 actually not invested so no broker in Belgium聽聽
[343]
supports fractional shares which means聽 you have to buy whole units of shares聽聽
[347]
so for a fund like VWCE in our example who shares聽trade around 100 euros at the time of filming this聽聽
[354]
you'll be left with actually a significant amount聽of cash when investing monthly this is money that聽聽
[362]
is not invested and therefore it actually isn't聽 working for you the second issue is that it's a聽聽
[368]
tedious manual task every month so when you first聽start investing it's fun to calculate the shares聽聽
[374]
it's quite fun to make those investments every聽month but after a few times it becomes pretty dull聽聽
[379]
and certainly quite annoying it's something you聽have to do though when you're investing monthly聽聽
[385]
through a broker these kind of drawbacks show that聽dollar cost averaging through a broker in Belgium聽聽
[394]
is quite difficult. As a Curvo founder I actually聽experienced this myself when i was managing my own聽聽
[400]
investments through one of those brokers listed聽and that's why we actually built Curvo to fix聽聽
[406]
dollar cost averaging for Belgian passive聽 investors so instead of a fee per transaction聽聽
[413]
Curvo charges a one percent yearly all-in fee on聽your total investments this means that you are not聽聽
[419]
penalized for investing more frequently through聽monthly contributions also the funds in Curvo's
[427]
portfolios are not liable for the TOB tax you are聽saving between 0.12 and 1.32 for every purchase聽聽
[435]
and sale so in the spreadsheet we actually ran聽the simulation for Curvo Growth which is one of聽聽
[442]
our portfolios which is very close to VWCE over聽the course of the year your Curvo fee is going聽聽
[448]
to amount to 9 euros and 42 cents this聽means that only Degiro is cheaper other brokers聽聽
[456]
such as Bolero or Keytrade are actually many聽times more expensive and so i just want to talk聽聽
[463]
about a couple more advantages to know if you go聽with Curvo so one all your money is invested so聽聽
[469]
investments with Curvo are done with fractional聽shares no matter the price of the shares and the聽聽
[476]
amount that you actually wish to invest all of聽 your savings are invested and they're put to work聽聽
[482]
there is no cash left sitting on an account聽 it's all being invested secondly the savings聽聽
[489]
you can really put them on autopilot from 50 euros聽per month so through Curvo's app you set up a聽聽
[495]
direct debit and so your savings are actually put on autopilot聽聽
[502]
and they're invested for you every single month聽through the app you can actually change the amount聽聽
[507]
at any time and you can even stop or cancel the聽automatic debits you can just sit back and you聽聽
[513]
can see your savings actually work for you and you聽can actually spend your time on other things that聽聽
[518]
actually important to you in your life so to聽 conclude for most people dollar cost averaging聽聽
[525]
is actually a great investment strategy it really聽forces you to contribute a set amount of money聽聽
[531]
every single month while ignoring the price聽 of each individual purchase by sticking to聽聽
[537]
the strategy you actually eliminate the risk that聽you will make counterproductive decisions based on聽聽
[543]
your emotions and if you get paid monthly it makes聽so much more sense but you know as we've shown聽聽
[551]
dollar cost averaging is actually difficult when聽you're going for a broker due to the high fees聽聽
[557]
and also the Belgian transaction tax so our聽 simulation of investing the 200 euros every month聽聽
[563]
showed that it is particularly expensive when聽you're using any broker but the jira and manually聽聽
[570]
calculating and making your investments every聽month becomes a pretty tedious task over time聽聽
[577]
and that's really why we built Curvo to improve聽the dollar cost averaging strategy for Belgium聽聽
[584]
passive investors by putting your savings聽 on autopilot through automated monthly聽聽
[591]
contributions you pretty much set up yourself for聽success all right that was the video thanks for聽聽
