i would like to invite steve out
[4]
[Applause]
[16]
[Music]
[17]
[Applause]
[20]
thank you very much um
[23]
let's chat for a few minutes about what
[25]
we're trying to do here
[27]
[Music]
[33]
in 2000
[35]
i made the decision to join apple
[37]
reporting to steve jobs and steve said
[40]
ron i just want you to run retail
[42]
and i want to serve people well
[45]
i was the vice president that ran all of
[47]
their america's in asia pacific business
[50]
and i would say you know i had the best
[52]
possible role at apple because steve
[54]
liked me and he left me alone
[56]
and any other combination of those two
[58]
things is really uncomfortable at apple
[60]
and so then i really from day one spent
[62]
a lot of time thinking how do i bring my
[65]
faith
[66]
to the customer
[68]
how do you make love visual through work
[72]
and that's we did the apple store
[77]
i'd been trained at the harvard business
[79]
school
[80]
you know and i understand how secular
[83]
people match
[85]
i had to think through how do i
[86]
translate the gospel
[89]
into a secular world we spent a lot of
[91]
time trying to figure out
[93]
you know why are we doing these stories
[95]
what is the mission
[97]
it was never about making money
[99]
we came down to two simple words
[102]
enriched lives
[104]
we're in enriched lives
[105]
[Music]
[106]
and if you think of walking in apple
[108]
store you see people you see products
[109]
and that's it
[110]
well the design of that was to connect
[113]
people so we had to get everything out
[114]
of the way or that wouldn't happen right
[116]
people come to the apple store why
[118]
because they love the relationship they
[120]
have with that employee it's really deep
[122]
it's really personal
[124]
that employee is looking
[126]
not in your pocketbook they're looking
[128]
in your heart
[129]
and they're trying to make your life a
[131]
little better
[132]
and that was what enriching lives could
[134]
do
[135]
and it was really gratifying to see us
[138]
take that mission
[140]
build it out and end up creating the
[142]
most productive retail stores ever
[143]
created
[148]
[Music]
[155]
sales in his essence is actually being a
[158]
servant you're serving that person to
[160]
understand them
[162]
at a deep enough level or an honest
[164]
enough level to say
[166]
i can help you
[168]
one of the reasons why steve wanted me
[170]
to join apple is to help change the
[173]
sales culture
[174]
they had had some ethical problems in
[176]
the previous year and a half so i came
[179]
in and said all right i'll change it but
[181]
i'm going to change it my way
[183]
so i actually have something that's
[185]
affectionately known as jb's rules of
[187]
success based on biblical principles and
[190]
many of my worldwide organizations would
[192]
keep them on their belt with their badge
[195]
and what it did is it gave them
[196]
principles to think about how we wanted
[199]
them to act when it wasn't so clear what
[202]
they should do
[204]
and for the most part it really worked
[206]
so what i wanted to show you today
[209]
thank you very much
[211]
thank you very much
[213]
[Applause]
[216]
both
[217]
tim and steve particularly are very deep
[221]
thinkers
[222]
and have thought a lot about faith and
[225]
belief both really open to asking
[229]
hard questions about well how does that
[231]
really work and if that's true
[234]
why this
[235]
which are exactly the questions we all
[237]
should be asking right and steve was one
[240]
of the most intentional
[243]
people i've ever met
[244]
and he was very intentional in those
[246]
last years about where he spent his time
[249]
and where he was going to leave
[250]
his mark and how he was going to leave
[252]
apple and through that though
[257]
there were a lot of us that had a chance
[259]
to
[260]
pray for him
[262]
and encourage him there was just this
[265]
sense of
[267]
him wanting to make every moment count
[270]
because he wasn't sure how many moments
[273]
he had left it's pretty unique to watch
[277]
[Music]
[282]
you have to ask the question how do you
[283]
love your neighbor
[284]
at work
[286]
who is your neighbor
[287]
at work a neighbor is someone who
[289]
happens to be in the walk your life
[291]
so when i see someone getting help at
[293]
the genius bar
[295]
in an apple store our genius is not
[297]
fixing a computer they're restoring a
[299]
relationship and when they do that you
[301]
see those
[302]
two people together that's love made
[304]
visual right the words we want to hear
[307]
most at the end of our life is
[309]
well done by good and faithful servant
[312]
now the wonderful thing about that
[314]
doesn't have anything to do with power
[316]
or money or affluence or influence or
[318]
any of that
[319]
because the lord gets to decide all of
[321]
that he can take anybody he wants and
[324]
put him in any spot he wants what christ
[326]
did when i look at you know the gospel
[329]
he saw a need
[331]
he helped
[332]
when you make love visual at work you
[334]
focus on what christ did you identify
[336]
problems and you help right you help
[338]
people ultimately whether you're selling
[340]
a service or product whatever you're
[342]
doing in business
[344]
it's about people
[346]
and the lord's in the people business so
[348]
we should be too
[352]
[Music]
[373]
you
