How to customize your iPhone - iOS 15, App Icons, and More! - YouTube
Channel: The Verge
[2]
hey it's climb with the verge and today
[4]
we're going to be customizing our iphone
[6]
home screen now for years every iphone
[8]
looked more or less exactly the same but
[10]
with ios 14 apple added widgets and new
[13]
workarounds for customizing icons
[16]
causing a huge boom and bespoke iphone
[18]
themes now if you're an android user
[20]
this is old news to you like over a
[22]
decade old but with 90 of iphones
[25]
running ios 14 now there's no shortage
[27]
of awesome themes being shown off adding
[29]
them isn't exactly straightforward
[31]
though in this video we're going to show
[33]
you the basics how to fully customize
[35]
your home screen and with ios 15 how you
[38]
can make your phone automatically go
[40]
from this at home to this when you're at
[42]
work the first thing you'll want to do
[44]
is make a plan for what home screen
[46]
you'd like there are tons of great
[48]
resources for inspiration pinterest
[50]
reddit icon packs on etsy
[53]
next make a note of what apps you'd like
[54]
to have on your home screen most icon
[56]
packs should include most of the popular
[59]
apps but if you're using less popular
[60]
ones like a specific game or calendar
[63]
app you manage to be a little more
[64]
creative when selecting an icon once you
[66]
have your icons you can download them
[68]
directly from your phone's browser by
[70]
clicking save image or by importing the
[72]
images into the files app using icloud
[74]
drive finally you're going to want to
[76]
grab a wallpaper and if you need some
[78]
ideas the verge has excellent ones
[81]
let's start with the easiest thing to
[82]
change your wallpaper now a lot of you
[85]
probably already know how to do this one
[86]
so feel free to skip ahead if you don't
[89]
though head over to settings
[91]
wallpaper
[92]
and then hit choose a new wallpaper
[94]
from there just select one from your
[96]
photo album or from the apple defaults
[98]
if you're boring and then tap on it to
[100]
set it an important thing to note here
[102]
is that ios icons don't allow for image
[104]
transparency so if you want a floating
[107]
icon effect you're gonna need to make
[108]
sure that your wallpaper color matches
[110]
the icon background for whatever icons
[112]
you have next is widgets which were
[115]
introduced back in ios 14 and add a
[117]
whole new dimension to customizing your
[119]
home screen again android users have had
[121]
this for a while but ios users only got
[124]
them recently to add a widget you're
[126]
going to tap and hold on your home
[127]
screen the plus button and then you can
[129]
scroll through all your widgets over
[131]
here
[132]
i'm going to grab a widget
[135]
you can see the different sizes and
[136]
options for widgets you have yeah hit
[138]
the add widget button
[140]
we'll place it on your home screen now
[142]
widgets can also be put into stacks
[144]
they're the same size so i can tap and
[145]
hold this widget
[147]
drop it into the stack over here
[149]
and then i can easily scroll through all
[151]
those widgets without taking up so much
[153]
space all right
[154]
let's theme now to start i suggest
[157]
adding a second home screen and hiding
[159]
your regular layout just in case you
[161]
want to switch back when you're done i'm
[163]
going to warn you this whole process can
[165]
be pretty wonky so to create a custom
[168]
icon you're going to want to head to
[169]
shortcuts which should be pre-installed
[171]
on your phone but if it's not you can
[173]
install it on the app store now
[175]
shortcuts is a pretty complicated app so
[177]
we're going to try and make this simple
[178]
we're going to open the shortcut app
[180]
and we're going to hit the plus button
[181]
in this corner to create a new shortcut
[184]
now the thing we want to do here is open
[185]
an app so we're going to add an action
[188]
we're going to type in open app
[190]
and we're going to open an app
[192]
we'll find an app on our phone let's say
[194]
the camera app
[197]
and now i've already done the shortcut
[199]
this is the action that we want to take
[200]
now we want icons though so we have to
[203]
do an additional step just gonna hit the
[205]
share button
[206]
we're going to add to home screen and
[208]
now here's where the magic happens
[210]
so here's where i give it the shortcut
[212]
name which will be the label on my phone
[214]
so maybe i don't like camera maybe i
[216]
want this to say
[217]
photography
[219]
now i need an icon so i'm gonna hit
[221]
choose file
[222]
i already have this folder of these
[223]
great icons i made earlier out of the
[225]
original windows 98 icon so i'll get
[227]
this great camera icon
[229]
hit add
[231]
and there it is on my home screen when i
[233]
tap it
[235]
it'll take me right to the camera app
[237]
now there are a lot of quirks here using
[239]
shortcuts means that you have to create
[241]
a new shortcut for each individual app
[243]
icon that you want to change which is
[245]
really time consuming and really boring
[248]
worse every time that you open an app
[250]
using that custom icon you'll see an
[252]
annoying drop down banner notification
[254]
from shortcuts letting you know that
[255]
it's doing exactly what you asked it to
[257]
do
[258]
and while there used to be a pretty
[260]
annoying hacky way to get around that
[262]
and block them it doesn't seem to work
[264]
in ios 15 anymore so you're more or less
[266]
stuck with them to take things to the
[268]
next level you're gonna want some
[269]
widgets to match widget smith is one of
[271]
the most popular apps out there for this
[273]
because you can use it to just display
[275]
images that work well with your theme
[277]
like say a windows 98 icon or you can
[280]
use it to create themed calendar and
[281]
clock widgets that match your color
[283]
scheme font and aesthetic so we're going
[285]
to open the app
[286]
and we're going to select the type of
[288]
widget we want you have small medium and
[290]
large which are the three ios widget
[291]
sizes let's go with medium that's kind
[294]
of what i want for here and go with a
[296]
default widget
[297]
and now you have lots of different
[299]
options we have date we have time we
[300]
have weather we have step counting
[302]
health activity calendar reminders tides
[305]
astronomy
[307]
lots choices now i just kind of want a
[309]
simple clock in calendar so we'll find
[311]
that
[312]
and select it
[314]
now our so you can see we're going to
[316]
keep basic i don't really need you know
[318]
hearts or
[320]
you know apple colors
[322]
maybe both terminal actually
[324]
uh got that retro feel we're gonna
[326]
customize it because i really like these
[328]
colors
[329]
about this nice blocky retro font
[332]
uh background color though
[335]
doing like a windows 98 so let's go with
[337]
morbid teal
[338]
and then
[340]
for my font color let's just go with the
[343]
simple white so we hit save
[346]
applied to this widget
[348]
and we're ready to go
[350]
go plus button again we go and find
[354]
we'll do smith
[356]
add a medium widget
[359]
we're going to choose that medium 2 that
[362]
i just made before
[363]
and then we'll show up
[365]
all that's technically old news though
[367]
but ios 15 adds an additional wrinkle to
[369]
widgets and custom map icons called
[371]
focus modes which as a side effect also
[375]
allow you to selectively show and hide
[377]
whole pages of your home screen widgets
[379]
and all whenever you want the original
[380]
idea is that you could have a home
[382]
screen for work with your calendar and
[384]
email widgets that automatically pop up
[385]
when you're in the office and a regular
[387]
home screen with social media apps and
[389]
music widgets for when you're off the
[390]
clock
[391]
but since focus modes let you choose
[394]
home screens you can combine them with
[396]
widgets and shortcuts to say
[398]
create a perfectly themed windows 98
[400]
layout with your icons and widgets and
[402]
everything that you can call up at a
[404]
moment's notice to impress your friends
[406]
without having to go through and
[407]
manually hide all your home pages every
[410]
time once you've got your home screen
[411]
set up here's how to enable focus mode
[413]
to automatically trigger it now again to
[416]
do this you'll need to be either running
[417]
the ios 15 public beta or if ios 15 is
[420]
out by the time you're watching this
[422]
just regular ios 15.
[424]
so you're going to go to settings
[426]
i'm going to hit focus then we're going
[428]
to create a new focus mode i'll do a
[430]
custom one here
[432]
called windows
[433]
get this color
[435]
this icon hit next
[438]
it doesn't really matter for uh
[439]
notifications so we're just gonna
[442]
go right through these okay our focus is
[444]
ready now the important thing here is
[445]
we're gonna go to home screen
[447]
we're gonna do custom pages
[449]
we're only going to let it show our main
[451]
page that we have over here
[453]
which is the one that we've laid out
[455]
with our custom widgets and our custom
[456]
icons
[458]
now whenever i go and set
[461]
that windows
[462]
notification it hides all my other home
[465]
screens and just shows me the windows
[467]
icons but let's say we want to take this
[469]
a little further because focus will let
[470]
you get to just showing you your custom
[472]
icons but not the wallpaper
[475]
so we're going to do is we're going to
[476]
use shortcuts to actually kind of hack
[478]
our way through that too we'll use
[479]
shortcuts
[482]
we're going to create a new shortcut
[483]
that'll automatically set a wallpaper so
[485]
you have to set an album
[487]
with whatever wallpaper you want which
[488]
i've already done you're going to set up
[490]
a shortcut that looks like this
[493]
then you're going to go over to
[494]
automation over here because one of the
[496]
things you can do with automation is use
[499]
focus modes as a trigger to do things so
[501]
what we've done is we've built an
[502]
automation that automatically changes
[504]
our wallpaper to our windows 98 theme
[507]
and we've set it up so that whenever we
[509]
turn windows 98 on it'll run that
[511]
shortcut so now i have all my automation
[513]
set up so now i can hit focus button
[516]
hit my windows 98 theme
[518]
and you can see it is pretty janky you
[520]
still have to hit the set wallpaper
[521]
button over here
[522]
with just one button
[524]
i've turned my phone into windows 98 so
[526]
that's pretty cool
[527]
now again this is a really janky setup
[530]
and if you're using this to change your
[531]
wallpaper you will either have to set up
[533]
more automations to switch back which is
[535]
even more hacky or just manually reset
[538]
it every time but it is pretty cool
[541]
all these hoops you have to jump through
[543]
highlight just how difficult it is to
[545]
really customize your iphone you have to
[548]
remember it took apple years before it
[550]
let you even customize your home screen
[552]
background even now
[554]
all these customization tools look more
[556]
like hacked together workarounds not
[558]
useful methods to let you easily change
[560]
the way your phone looks the steps that
[562]
apple has taken though are some of the
[563]
biggest concessions that it's ever made
[565]
towards customization which means that
[567]
there's still hopes for future updates
[569]
that'll let you truly customize how your
[571]
iphone looks in the future
[573]
thanks so much for watching we've got
[574]
links in the description for this cool
[576]
windows 98 theme that we've made virtual
[578]
papers and other how-to guides for
[580]
customizing your iphone and if you've
[582]
gone and themed your iphone send me a
[584]
picture on twitter show us how it looks
