Pet Insurance for Guinea Pigs and Exotic Pets - Guinea Pig Café! - YouTube

Hello everybody, happy Monday and  welcome to the Guinea Pig Café.  

As you already know we're in a new year and it's  a great time to finish or even start some projects  

you might have put off from last year. In one  of my previous videos someone had mentioned  

in the comments if I had or would recommend pet  insurance for the guinea pigs; and to be honest,  

this is something that I have been wanting to do  and get for the piggies for a very long time. So  

I figured, being a new year, it's a great a  time as any to go ahead and get that done.  

So I decided to film the process and I  wanted to show you guys the procedure  

on how to get pet insurance, the costs, and  exactly what it covers. Stay tuned to see.

Before we get into it, I want you to keep  in mind that all of the numbers I'm going  

to go over are specific to me and my pet's needs.  These numbers can vary depending on where you are  

in the United States, or even in the world, if  you are even able to get exotic pet insurance.  

I specifically chose Nationwide as the provider  for my pets' insurance because I knew they  

offered it for exotic pets already. And also, I  want you to know that I am in no way sponsored  

by Nationwide. Any of the costs I'm about to  mention to you are coming out of my own pocket.  

I just wanted to share this information for  educational purposes in case you were interested  

in getting pet insurance of your very own, so  you can kind of have an idea of what to expect.  

Without further ado, let's  go ahead and get into it.  

Okay so we're gonna go ahead and get some  insurance for the guinea pigs and for the bunny.  

So, upon doing research I already know that  Nationwide provides pet insurance. All right.

So...

So as you can see if you have things other  than guinea pigs, they actually cover all  

of these animals. So the ones that interest me of  course are the guinea pigs and of course rabbits,  

because I'm just gonna go ahead and get everybody  covered just in case. Okay let's go ahead...

Okay so um, unfortunately it looks like I  have to call and I can't do this online. Um  

I'll go ahead and call them and I'll try to  put in as much of the phone call as I can,

Hi um, I was actually looking into  signing up for pet insurance today. 

Hello from the future. upon editing the hour-long  call, trying to mute the representative, and  

caption the information stated, this  video was becoming choppy and messy. 

Instead, I'll fill you in on all of the  information I received during the phone call.  

Again, these numbers and coverage options  may differ for you so keep that in mind. 

There is a lot of information to cover and I'll do  my best to summarize and only provide the basics  

as well as what was important to me. They offer whole pet insurance which  

can also contain a wellness plan or not. Whole pet provides medical coverage for  

your pet if they become sick or get hurt. It  covers sneezes or infections, as well as cancer,  

diabetes, or broken bones. If you choose to add the wellness  

plan it covers even more including physical  exams, blood work, vaccinations, dental work,  

including trimming and filing, and the holy  grail of the lot, spaying and neutering. 

What is not covered are non-vet  expenses such as sales tax,  

grooming, or pre-existing medical conditions. They also offer a multi-pet discount so bonus! 

How this insurance works is you pay for  any medical expenses for your pet. You  

then submit a claim which you will then  be refunded whatever amount if applicable. 

If you get whole pet with wellness,  you have a once a year 100 deductible  

and you receive 90 percent back with no limit.  Without the wellness, you have a once a year  

250 deductible and receive 90 percent back  but with a max payout of 10 000 for the year,  

which is still pretty good considering it's  just for a little guinea pig or a bunny.  

So the initial quotes I received with wellness  plan and multi-pet discount are as follows:  

Stella, 32.10 Caelum, Terra and Luna: 28.75  each. So a grand total of 118.35 for the month. 

Without wellness but still the  multi-pet discount: Stella 17.39, Caelum  

18.67 most likely due to his age. Luna and Terra  17.81 each. So a grand total of 71.68 a month.  

Personally I chose to go with the wellness  plan even though it is a little bit pricier.  

There's no contract meaning you can cancel any  time. Up front you pay for the first and last  

month so if you do decide to cancel the last  month will be refunded. The agent recommended  

that after the first year to drop down to  without wellness after spaying and neutering.  

I don't think I ever mentioned this but  Caelum's neuter cost about 250 dollars. I  

got him fixed for obvious reasons and didn't  plan on spaying the girls due to the cost,  

but now greatly considering it. That,  however, will be a topic for another video.  

The questions they ask are pretty standard  including your name, address, email, phone number,  

etc. They will do an application for each pet.  They will ask for the pet's birth date as well  

as when you brought them home. Exact dates aren't  needed just your best guess which, unfortunately,  

I don't truly know any of the piggy's birthdates.  Anyways, they also ask for a color description  

and a vet that you go to, if you have one.  And then the fun part: the medical history.

Okay so honestly it wasn't as difficult  as I thought it was going to be. 

It took about an hour to do everything, but um as  long as you have time honestly it really wasn't  

too difficult to do. The representative  that helped me was very, very, very kind.  

So yeah, I'll go ahead and wrap this up elsewhere. And that's everything that I have for right now  

on the pet insurance for the guinea pigs  and the bunny. Once everything settles  

and I'm able to take the guinea pigs or  the bunny to the vet and make a claim,  

I'll be sure to make a video on that. So keep  an eye out for that because that might have  

some useful information if this is something  that you are considering getting for yourself.
