Opening remarks & Sustainable Growth challenge (Sustainable Growth Day ‘19) - YouTube
Channel: Android Developers
[2]
good morning one of the things for me
[5]
what has been great you know it's I'm
[7]
going to come up seven years and Google
[9]
Play join just when we got started is
[11]
how new ones the conversation has
[14]
happened and how much more we are
[17]
learning about the wonderful things that
[19]
you guys do and perhaps some of the less
[22]
wonderful things that the broader
[24]
ecosystem does and one thing for us has
[29]
become important as you might have seen
[30]
through IO and perhaps through headlines
[34]
on the news is that for us on Android
[39]
openness and responsibility has come
[42]
together and one way to think about
[45]
openness and responsibility together is
[47]
to really think about our trust contract
[50]
with our users and sometimes it thinks
[55]
it comes across as a regulation and
[57]
policy and less fun stuff but what we
[61]
want to make that contract about is
[63]
about sustainable growth that contract
[66]
with your user that says I respect your
[68]
time I want to help you make the most of
[72]
it I will design in a way that speaks to
[76]
you that understands you that's what
[80]
today is about
[81]
and that's what I'm excited about is
[82]
because we've gone so far from even
[86]
trying to say build on Android to really
[88]
thinking about sustainable growth and
[90]
for both of us what's exciting is this
[93]
long-term engagement with our users I'm
[97]
sure most of you want to have users for
[99]
the long run 10-15 years it's also
[102]
exciting for me that this is not just I
[103]
mean you know most of the time apps had
[105]
designed that way but even game
[107]
developers remember the Angry Birds
[109]
right $0.99 wonderful beautiful game but
[114]
then people are like okay now it's done
[116]
what do I do next and when I started
[119]
people were launching 6070 games yo and
[123]
now people are thinking about designing
[125]
games that people will play for 60 70
[127]
years it's moved and that's exciting for
[130]
me
[131]
it's also exciting for me is that this
[133]
coming from all of you this is a
[135]
conversation that's happening in this
[137]
community as Nick pointed out very very
[139]
few of us as got are going to talk it's
[142]
always it's about the community learning
[143]
from each other so I'm gonna like
[147]
Lehmann and use an example I think it's
[150]
really difficult for most people to
[153]
think about deliberately telling your
[157]
users to spend less time in your app and
[161]
tell them to come less often show of
[166]
hands does that feel uncomfortable I see
[168]
one hand go up really strongly and
[171]
another one waving all right yes it does
[173]
but what if I told you that there are
[175]
developers who are leaning into that
[177]
paradigm and actually finding great
[180]
results take drops for example language
[182]
learning app they have something called
[185]
as paste learning what it means is that
[188]
if you are learning a language they want
[191]
you to take a break between sessions the
[193]
force a break between sessions so their
[196]
users come 56 plus their spend 56
[202]
percent less time in their app than
[205]
peers big number come back 51% less
[209]
often another big number almost feels
[213]
like saying oh my god right is this
[217]
working
[218]
so turns out when we look at the results
[221]
users are acknowledging that this
[224]
technique is helping them learn better
[228]
2.5 X conversion from installs to buyers
[233]
4x better average revenue per paying
[237]
user 86 percent less churn that's
[243]
impressive
[244]
isn't it what making that little leap to
[247]
say what if I take that time to
[251]
understand how my user should engage
[254]
with me make sense so that's what
[258]
today's conversation is going to be
[259]
about today's conversation is going to
[261]
be about figuring out those techniques
[264]
giving each other the confidence
[267]
to do that I do want to have a call-out
[270]
to Jenny who this all started out and
[273]
this is I think maybe showing a little
[275]
bit about how Google works the make the
[277]
mechanisms
[279]
I always forget your last name sorry
[281]
Jenny she just got married so
[282]
congratulations Jenny miles I call a
[284]
Jenny Fisher that's how we she got on
[286]
the team so Jenny started this about
[290]
maybe three years ago now saying I
[292]
really want to think about sustainable
[294]
engagement I really need to think about
[295]
how this and actually spend time with
[300]
you know somebody who's rotating into
[302]
the team and meeting tons of developers
[305]
I think 20 or 30 developers and going
[307]
through and understanding this thing and
[309]
in doing so has built a body of work
[313]
which she presented at the habit summit
[317]
which is hosted by neri oh those of you
[320]
who told me maybe you're sitting on the
[321]
book if you haven't picked it off so
[324]
take a look he is the you know is one of
[327]
the experts in this field of
[329]
habit-forming so isn't that interesting
[331]
I'm asking you to tell your users to
[335]
spend less time and yet we are going to
[337]
bring the foremost expert in
[339]
habit-forming to speak to us this
[343]
evening
[343]
right so he is gonna give a keynote so
[346]
please turn up I went to his habit
[349]
summit about three years ago I still
[351]
caught things from there I've learned a
[353]
ton from him so turn up for that and
[355]
then I'm gonna have a fireside chat with
[357]
him
[357]
at the end of it he's like an
[359]
interesting super smart brain and you
[362]
will I think you will enjoy that thank
[367]
you all for having me today
[368]
I'm Jenny miles and I work on our amia
[371]
apps team based out of our London office
[373]
so since I joined the partnerships team
[376]
three and a half years ago I've really
[378]
seen the needs of my partner's change
[380]
from a focus on growth of installs and
[383]
driving awareness to really exploring
[385]
how to drive meaningful long-term
[387]
relationships with their users I've seen
[390]
firsthand as well how driving
[392]
sustainable growth for their businesses
[394]
requires overcoming some common
[396]
challenges so I'm here today to really
[398]
set the scene on
[399]
these challenges and the point of today
[402]
is really to help new access some
[404]
insights from other partners on how
[406]
they're trying to actually solve these
[408]
challenges so based on my experience in
[411]
amia
[412]
the first challenge that I've seen
[414]
that's very common across all of our
[416]
partners is actually activating new
[419]
users so activating new users in that
[422]
very first session is super critical how
[425]
many people here have given up on an app
[427]
after installing it just for one minute
[428]
and have completely given up on it
[431]
pretty much everyone in the room so yeah
[434]
I have as well and I thought all for
[436]
saying that as an apps partnerships lead
[438]
users are fast to make up their minds
[441]
about whether an app delivers value and
[442]
some studies actually suggest that over
[445]
80% of users never return to an app
[447]
after they initially open it which of
[449]
course is not a good strategy for
[450]
sustainable growth
[452]
so the second challenge that I've seen
[454]
across many partners in my experience in
[457]
aamir is the challenge of really
[459]
engaging your users in the right way
[461]
it's not enough just to engage people to
[463]
bring them into your app for no reason
[465]
at all or four different types of
[466]
reasons and what we've seen is many
[470]
well-meaning attempts to engage can
[471]
actually lead to churn so you can see on
[474]
this graph here you know initially you
[476]
might think great sending high volume
[478]
notifications is going to boost your
[480]
monthly active users that's you know in
[482]
a way a short term approach to growth
[484]
however we do see a correlation with our
[487]
own internal Google Play data with this
[489]
increased volume of notifications and
[491]
higher opt-out rates and this really
[493]
indicates to us that this strategy of
[496]
trying to drive a huge volume of people
[497]
into your app may actually backfire and
[501]
could hinder your relationship with your
[502]
users so let's imagine you've overcome
[505]
those first two hurdles you've
[507]
successfully engaged those brand-new
[509]
users they fully understand your value
[512]
proposition there's then of course the
[514]
challenge of retaining them for the
[515]
long-term better retention means that
[518]
you are less reliant on acquiring new
[520]
users which of course is costly and of
[522]
course retaining existing users drive
[524]
success across all business models and
[526]
I'm sure there's a whole range of
[527]
business models here
[529]
in the room today so as I say many of
[531]
the companies I've been working with in
[534]
Europe face each of these challenges and
[536]
as purnama alluded to what I've tried to
[539]
do over the past three years is work of
[541]
these partners to help them solve these
[543]
challenges so in a mirror what we we ran
[546]
a similar event actually sustainable
[548]
growth day about six weeks ago
[550]
but I want to talk a bit about how we
[551]
got to that stage just so you understand
[553]
the kind of evolution here so we ran
[556]
events on subscriptions day sustainable
[559]
engagement day to bring these
[561]
like-minded companies together and as
[563]
I've just mentioned we initially tackled
[565]
these topics of engagement and
[567]
monetization in silos and each time we
[570]
heard from partners it's great to talk
[572]
about subscriptions but what we really
[574]
care about is retention when we had the
[576]
the day focused on engagement our
[578]
partners said it's great to talk about
[580]
engagement but we really care about
[581]
monetization so that's why you know
[584]
today and of course with the event that
[586]
we had in London we wanted to bring the
[588]
two topics together because we
[589]
recognized that for all of you here
[591]
these two goals really do go
[593]
hand-in-hand so Panama mentioned the
[599]
forum and Nick also mentioned this in
[602]
2018 we started our own forum in Emir we
[605]
wanted to bring a community of leading
[607]
app developers to regularly meet and
[609]
share their challenges there anything
[612]
that they found hasn't worked as well
[613]
for example around driving engagement
[616]
and retention of course you can apply to
[618]
this the Americas launch of our forum
[620]
later today with the QR code and the
[624]
reason why I'm mentioning this today to
[626]
you is because we had a lot of success
[628]
with many different developers sharing
[630]
case studies inspiring others and we
[633]
thought of being really interesting to
[634]
actually bring some of our forum members
[636]
from Aamir here to our event today so we
[639]
have three European developers bling'
[641]
Castillo Sioux and neuro Nation who were
[644]
all going to share their own strategies
[646]
for driving sustainable growth with you
[648]
today
[649]
you
