hello my name is sean sweeney and i'm an
[2]
investment advisor representative
[4]
and retirement income certified
[6]
professional with cetera investors
[8]
and today we're going to be discussing
[11]
roth ira conversions
[20]
[Music]
[22]
a roth ira conversion is the name given
[25]
to a special type of transaction
[27]
where you move money from your pre-tax
[29]
retirement account
[30]
like an ira 401k or 403b to a roth ira
[35]
when you make a roth conversion the
[36]
amount of money you convert is added to
[39]
your tax return for the year
[40]
and is taxable at whatever income tax
[42]
bracket you happen to be
[44]
in for example let's say jill has 100
[47]
000 in a traditional ira and would like
[49]
to convert it to a roth ira
[51]
we'll talk more about why she might want
[53]
to do this in a moment but if jill moves
[55]
forward with her 100 000
[57]
roth ira conversion she'll have to add
[60]
100 000
[61]
of income to her tax return for that
[63]
year which will be taxable whatever tax
[65]
rate jill happens to be at
[67]
please remember if you're over 59 and a
[69]
half
[70]
and you've had any roth ira for more
[72]
than five years
[73]
then all withdrawals from any of your
[75]
roth iras will be tax and penalty free
[78]
for life
[79]
if you're over 59 and a half but haven't
[80]
had a roth ira for five years yet
[83]
you can still take out any of your
[85]
converted amount
[86]
tax and penalty free at any time if
[89]
you're younger than 59 and a half
[91]
other rules apply needless to stay
[94]
because
[94]
this is a big decision and can have a
[97]
significant impact on your taxes
[99]
it's always best to discuss this option
[101]
with your tax and financial
[102]
professionals beforehand
[104]
so why would you voluntarily choose to
[107]
make one of these roth ira conversions
[109]
and pay taxes before you have to well
[112]
there are a lot of reasons but perhaps
[114]
the most common reason is one we've
[116]
already discussed
[117]
to pay off uncle sam now so that you own
[120]
your retirement account
[121]
free and clear for the rest of your life
[124]
remember with the roth ira you have the
[126]
potential for future tax free
[128]
withdrawals
[128]
of everything in your account something
[131]
else to keep in mind is that
[132]
unlike roth ira contributions there are
[135]
no restrictions on who can make roth ira
[137]
conversions
[138]
you can't be too old you can't be too
[140]
young you can be working
[142]
or you can be retired there's no minimum
[145]
amount of income you need
[147]
or a maximum amount of income you can
[149]
have
[150]
i think you see what i mean here if you
[152]
want to convert your ira to a roth ira
[155]
there is nothing in the tax rules that
[157]
will stop you from doing so
[159]
the potential tax-free nature of the
[161]
roth ira may also provide you with
[164]
additional benefits
[165]
such as a hedge against tax rates rising
[168]
in the future
[169]
when it comes to your retirement there
[171]
are a lot of unknowns
[173]
what will the market do what will
[174]
inflation be like what will your tax
[176]
rate be
[177]
and so on but that last one taxes
[180]
is a major concern for many retirees and
[183]
one
[184]
we've already talked about a little bit
[186]
a roth ira conversion can help
[187]
manage that risk by paying taxes at
[190]
today's
[191]
known rates if tax rates rise in the
[194]
future
[195]
tax-free distributions from the roth ira
[197]
will be even more
[198]
valuable of course if you think that
[200]
your tax rate will be lower
[202]
in retirement then that would be an
[203]
indication that maybe this strategy
[205]
isn't the right one for you
[207]
also since roth ira distributions and
[209]
retirement are generally tax free
[211]
they typically don't impact other
[213]
aspects tied to your income
[215]
such as taxes on social security another
[218]
big benefit of the roth ira
[220]
and one that many retirees find
[222]
attractive is that roth iras have no
[224]
required minimum distributions during
[226]
your lifetime
[227]
all those rmd calculations and potential
[229]
mistakes we talked about
[231]
they are not an issue if you have a roth
[234]
ira
[235]
during your lifetime you can take as
[236]
much or as little as you want
[238]
that means that your roth ira can
[240]
continue to grow
[242]
and compound tax-free for your heirs
[245]
which also makes it a very intriguing
[246]
vehicle from an estate planning
[248]
perspective
[249]
