[1]
hi a.d
[3]
welcome to our home
[5]
[Music]
[23]
so this is the entryway here
[26]
we built this from the ground up so the
[28]
first time i've ever done anything like
[30]
that it was quite an undertaking i think
[33]
having spent so much time as an expat in
[35]
europe and really falling in love with
[37]
georgian proportions and those kind of
[40]
details i i really wanted the entryway
[42]
to feel like its own special room
[45]
and so with the architects we conceived
[47]
of having a fireplace which is something
[49]
you see a lot in europe in an entryway
[51]
and just gives this really nice feeling
[54]
of warmth and welcome as you come in the
[57]
tiles reminds me of you know as i said
[58]
my time living in london and just a
[61]
detail that's classic and traditional i
[63]
really like the mix of having the things
[65]
that are sort of systemic to the house
[68]
they're more traditional we have
[69]
reclaimed fireplaces and old floors and
[72]
then i think it gives sort of leeway to
[74]
have a more contemporary like mixed
[76]
experience with furnishings and stuff
[78]
like that
[79]
[Music]
[84]
this is one of my favorite little rooms
[86]
of the house the powder room it's got
[89]
all this hand done antiqued mirror and
[91]
hand-painted wallpaper it's got a
[93]
reclaimed sink it's got tons of
[96]
different textures and metal finishes
[98]
it's really pretty i love it it makes me
[101]
feel very grown up when i pee in here
[103]
[Music]
[107]
so this is the dining room here i
[109]
enlisted my friend bridget to help me
[111]
furnish the house she's been one of my
[113]
best friends for 20 years and i was
[115]
trying to do it by myself
[117]
and
[118]
uh it was i couldn't do it but some of
[121]
the things i had ordered before we
[123]
started like this beautiful table this
[126]
came from france a beautiful furniture
[128]
gallery called the coal coast
[130]
and then bridget found these really cool
[133]
contemporary chairs
[136]
and this chandelier which i can't decide
[138]
if it looks like a grasshopper or lily
[141]
pads or something it's a little
[143]
futuristic for me bridget and i
[145]
don't want to say we fought but we
[147]
definitely
[148]
there was some friction
[150]
and then we landed on
[151]
it being pretty cool and fabulous that's
[154]
what i love about it is the pearls i
[156]
think they're so beautiful and unique
[158]
there's something also a bit star trek
[160]
about it but i've grown to really love
[163]
it
[164]
and again we have a reclaimed fireplace
[167]
here from chateau de ming and then
[169]
this wallpaper is so amazing it's hand
[173]
painted by these artists in los angeles
[175]
it's called mj atelier and they also
[178]
made the powder room wallpaper they do
[180]
these incredible 3d
[183]
wallpapers and all kinds of different
[185]
textures and colors so i love that the
[188]
wallpaper really grounds the room in
[190]
kind of a more traditional feel and then
[192]
again we have some super contemporary
[194]
items mixed in i entertain a lot i cook
[197]
all the time
[199]
and i wanted it to feel
[201]
both welcoming but also that you could
[204]
have like a formal dinner party and i
[206]
think it strikes the right balance i
[208]
mean the kitchen's right there so we
[209]
have our informal there but it's also
[212]
nice to just kind of gather around here
[214]
with the kids and you can spill pasta
[217]
and wine and it just wipes right off
[219]
[Music]
[223]
so
[224]
this is the kitchen i love it so much
[226]
the heart of the home this was designed
[228]
by the architects who did the house
[231]
roman and williams their amazing design
[233]
firm in new york and they did all of the
[235]
architecture and they had done my
[238]
apartment in new york city which i don't
[240]
have anymore they had done this kitchen
[242]
there for me which i lived in this
[244]
kitchen it was bright and airy and
[246]
white and it had a lot of these similar
[249]
details like in the cabinetry so i
[251]
wanted to pull in some elements from the
[253]
kitchen that they had done for us there
[256]
cabinetry being one and also having the
[259]
range be
[260]
in the middle of the room because
[263]
i cook so much and i spent so much of my
[265]
time facing the wall and my kids would
[267]
be
[268]
in the room so when it's like this you
[270]
have the opportunity to cook and chat
[272]
with people
[274]
this is portuguese tile it's reclaimed
[277]
tile that robin from roman and williams
[279]
found and i just like look for those
[282]
little elements to kind of bring some
[284]
texture and some homey feeling in we
[286]
also put the fireplace in which is like
[289]
such a luxury to be able to have a wood
[291]
burning fireplace in your kitchen
[293]
you know it does take me back to my days
[295]
living in the uk i had two wood-burning
[297]
fireplaces in the kitchen and it was
[300]
just such an important element of like
[302]
beating those cold dark winters and i
[305]
just got so used to having the fires on
[307]
all the time so when robin and steven
[309]
and i came to sit down and design the
[311]
house you know i said i'd love to have
[313]
if it's possible i'd love to have a
[315]
fireplace in the kitchen and then and
[317]
then bridget and i kind of came up with
[319]
this really cool
[321]
treatment to make this fluting with
[324]
plaster
[325]
which i
[327]
i found on something similar on like
[329]
pinterest
[331]
and then i was like i think this would
[333]
be such a nice way to finish the wall
[334]
instead of just having some drywall and
[336]
then bridget found these amazing lights
[338]
that are just so beautiful
[341]
[Music]
[344]
and then this i love particularly this
[347]
is like
[348]
my dream
[349]
to have all my pots
[351]
lined up on these beautiful cast iron
[354]
pots
[355]
in the fall i really i love to cook i
[358]
love to braise things and make soups and
[360]
stews and warming things i always
[362]
gravitate towards whatever produce is in
[365]
season then you know in spring it's like
[368]
we start to get this abundance in
[370]
california of all this amazing produce i
[372]
mean we get it all year round we're very
[374]
spoiled but i love really fresh like
[376]
just farmers i love going to the
[377]
farmer's market and planning the meal on
[379]
the fly my son's favorite recipe that i
[382]
make is turkey meatballs or turkey ragu
[385]
he loves pasta and he loves turkey sauce
[387]
i would say that's his favorite and my
[389]
daughter loves when i make their their
[391]
pasta lovers i think her favorite
[393]
is either this lemon parmesan pasta that
[395]
i make her
[397]
or a spicy marinara very easy this also
[400]
was like a dream come true for me
[403]
to have these particular blue plates
[406]
like on on a wall and i think it just
[409]
you know if you if you get plates you
[411]
know that have a beautiful pattern you
[412]
want to see them and usually they're
[414]
just stacked in the cupboard so we did
[417]
this plate wall and it brings like a pop
[419]
of color to the house and then stephen
[421]
the architect he insisted on us
[424]
realizing his rolling ladder which i
[426]
love and i'm so glad because there was a
[428]
fight between matt the contractor and
[430]
stephen about whether
[432]
this would be actually like usable and
[434]
workable this is something that i
[436]
learned from the woman that i bought my
[438]
house from in los angeles windsor smith
[441]
another designer i loved how in
[443]
different rooms she completely changes
[445]
floors and i think it's such a nice way
[447]
to offer a distinct personality to a
[450]
room and so i'm not afraid of changing
[452]
floors as you'll see as we go through
[463]
so this is the living room it's kind of
[466]
bonkers in the best way i think i really
[470]
wanted it to be a bit of a show stopper
[473]
and
[474]
there were certain elements that i
[475]
really knew that i wanted i had this
[478]
swing in a different house and the
[480]
original swing we lost in the fire but i
[483]
really had a vision of having this swing
[485]
there which i lie in it all the time i
[488]
mean i go there and i read or
[491]
talk on the phone or whatever and it's
[492]
become one of my favorite spots
[495]
the lights i'm friendly with lindsay
[497]
adelman who's an amazing lighting
[499]
designer as i'm sure you know
[501]
and i kind of just sent her drawings of
[503]
the room and i said just do whatever
[506]
and so
[508]
she came back with this
[510]
insanely beautiful
[513]
this is i think from her paradise
[515]
collection i think it's paradise city i
[517]
think it's somehow inspired by guns and
[519]
roses it's just so cool and it was so
[522]
nice to
[523]
give such an amazing artist like lindsay
[525]
license to just do whatever she wanted
[527]
like we made no edits i just said do it
[529]
it's like the jewelry for the living
[532]
room
[534]
this far is
[536]
i
[537]
again i found this i found the
[539]
inspiration on on the internet this
[541]
beautiful kind of jade bar somewhere it
[544]
was very modern and so i asked stephen
[546]
and robin if there was a way that we
[548]
could kind of take the idea but make it
[550]
different and unique and also
[552]
slightly more traditional to fit in with
[555]
those more traditional elements of the
[557]
house
[558]
and so they drew this beautiful thing
[560]
and then bridget and i went to the stone
[562]
yard and
[564]
we were kind of like wandering around we
[566]
didn't know what material we were going
[567]
to choose and we were looking at some
[570]
quartzes and some different marbles and
[572]
then
[572]
we both
[573]
came from different directions and like
[576]
saw this and fell in love with it at the
[578]
same time i don't even know what kind of
[579]
marble it is but it's so pretty i
[582]
usually have
[584]
some japanese whiskey is usually my
[587]
favorite thing to have unfortunately i'm
[590]
not drinking very much this year so i'm
[592]
having mostly seed lip cocktails which
[595]
is like mocktail or sparkling water but
[598]
when the time comes i will heavily
[600]
utilize her this couch i don't remember
[603]
where i first saw this couch but i knew
[606]
that i wanted it for this house when i
[608]
saw it i ordered it and i was like
[611]
bridgette help me and then she kind of
[614]
modified the size a little bit i just
[616]
love that it's already in a u-shape so
[620]
that people feel like they can pile in
[622]
there's something almost like 70s about
[624]
that which i love and we actually
[627]
use this all the time
[629]
even though we just kind of moved in we
[631]
were in this room a lot and it's it's
[633]
like a really nice place to sit and be
[635]
together
[638]
okay this is kind of the most incredible
[641]
thing of the house
[651]
it's a bit of a spa
[653]
moment happening
[655]
understatement understatement you know
[657]
i'm into wellness so i feel like it's
[659]
justified right i mean uh yeah well
[663]
maybe i can write it off as a business
[664]
expensive i think when we were
[666]
conceiving of the house we were trying
[667]
to think of
[669]
just like a forever forever home and
[672]
what would be the few things that
[674]
are just so special and that you know
[677]
you could use when you're much older and
[680]
so
[681]
we were kind of thinking it would be
[682]
amazing to have a real spa and there's
[685]
one in paris called band de la mare and
[688]
it sort of
[689]
mimics that in its own way and
[691]
robin and steven found these amazing
[694]
tiles they're handmade and i love all
[696]
the details that they had done and the
[698]
color and it's very calming in here as
[701]
well
[702]
and there's a cold plunge excellent for
[704]
circulation a hot tub and then there's a
[707]
steam and a sauna these are beautiful
[710]
these are roman and williams designed
[712]
these for water works
[713]
it's part of their atlas collection
[716]
and it's beautiful it's like this kind
[718]
of industrial design and the unlacquered
[721]
brass that we have as a theme kind of
[722]
running throughout the house which i
[724]
love which gives something it gives
[725]
everything such like a great hand i come
[728]
in here every day i use it all the time
[731]
and whenever i'm in here i'm like pinch
[733]
me i cannot believe that this is our
[735]
house so we live here
[737]
it's so fun
[754]
well a.d thank you so much for stopping
[757]
by it was a real pleasure to have you
[759]
and i have to go make some meatballs so
[761]
see you later
[764]
