[57]
your job search.
[58]
Before we jump into my top 5 job search strategies, remember that the key to a successful job
[65]
search is in your professional network.
[68]
If you want to improve the quality of opportunities available to you in your job search, it鈥檚
[74]
all about who you know.
[75]
In fact, research tell us that 80% of open positions are filled by referrals.
[82]
So let鈥檚 jump into my top 5 job search strategies.
[87]
Tip number 1: Use LinkedIn to network with others in your industry.
[92]
Now I have two simple strategies to use LinkedIn to expedite your job search.
[98]
First, pinpoint positions you would like to for apply or companies you鈥檇 like to work
[103]
with.
[104]
Then, do some research to find out if you know someone that works for the company or
[109]
if you know someone that knows someone that works for the company.
[112]
Reach out to your connections letting them know of your interest in the position or the
[117]
company that you want to work for, and ask them if they would be okay putting you in
[121]
touch with the hiring manager or human resource personnel.
[125]
If you鈥檙e unsure about how to do a job search using LinkedIn, I created a step-by-step tutorial
[132]
just for you.
[133]
I go ahead and link that up below.
[134]
Now, if you鈥檙e initiating a connection request with someone you don鈥檛 know and have never
[139]
met before, you want to do a customized note when you ask to connect with that person.
[146]
Your note could say something like this:
[148]
Hi Sally, I recently discovered you are a Senior Account Representative for Corporation
[154]
XYZ.
[155]
I admire your company鈥檚 vision and mission.
[157]
I鈥檓 currently building my network and would love the opportunity for us to connect here
[162]
on LinkedIn.
[163]
And then sign with your name.
[165]
This is the first step to building a new relationship.
[167]
Now, the second part to using LinkedIn to connect with others in your industry and expedite
[173]
your job search is to find groups and join those groups and interact with people in the
[179]
groups in high-quality conversations.
[182]
Sharing your thoughts, your ideas, and your opinions with others inside of private groups
[188]
are a great to get to know others.
[191]
This is also a really great way to connect with other people naturally.
[195]
And to get super involved, make sure you follow the company page on LinkedIn that you would
[200]
like to work for.
[201]
This only reiterates your interest in the position and is great way to stay informed
[206]
when the company makes a new post in their feed.
[209]
Tip number 2: Get your career documents ready.
[212]
Make sure your resume, your cover letter, and your LinkedIn profile are all ready to
[218]
go.
[219]
You want to be able to quickly customize each item if needed and send it quickly through
[223]
the person when a position comes up.
[226]
The last thing you want to be doing is updating your resume and LinkedIn profile at the eleventh
[231]
hour.
[232]
This leaves room for mistakes such as spelling errors or grammatical errors.
[237]
You want to leave yourself enough time to update your career documents and not rush
[242]
the process.
[243]
Tip number 3: Develop your 30-second elevator pitch.
[248]
Your elevator pitch is an essential resource in your job search.
[252]
This is the quickest way to let others know of your accomplishments and your qualifications.
[258]
This is also a great way to let others know what kind of problems you can solve.
[262]
Having a 30-second elevator pitch ready will give you more confidence when networking with
[267]
others about job opportunities.
[269]
The key to a great elevator pitch is to make sure it aligns perfectly with your resume,
[275]
your LinkedIn profile, and your cover letter.
[278]
Think of it as your career story.
[280]
Now here鈥檚 the cool thing: If you don鈥檛 have 30-second pitch, I created a video all
[285]
about how to create the perfect pitch.
[291]
Tip number 4 - Conduct Informational interviews
[294]
This is by far my most favorite tips of all the tips I鈥檝e shared with you today because
[300]
it鈥檚 the one that has worked the best for me.
[303]
Informational interviews are one of the fastest ways to develop new relationships and find
[307]
meaningful work.
[308]
An informational interview is an interview you initiate based on a position you鈥檇 like
[313]
to have in the future or an industry you鈥檇 like to work in.
[317]
Target 2 to 3 people that are doing what you want to do.
[320]
Reach out to those people using LinkedIn and ask them if they鈥檇 be interested in an informational
[325]
interview.
[326]
Now, believe it or not, most people really enjoy talking about themselves, so don鈥檛
[331]
let this step intimidate you.
[332]
You can ask them questions like, what do you like most about your position?
[336]
How did you get to where you are now?
[339]
And what advice do you give me or someone just starting out that wants to move into
[344]
that position in the future?
[345]
Tip number 5 - Follow up.
[348]
You want to keep track of all the connections you鈥檝e made and the positions you鈥檝e applied
[352]
for and follow up.
[354]
This is one of best ways to fast-track your job search.
[357]
We are all inundated with emails, connection requests, and text messages, so it鈥檚 really
[362]
easy to forget about a conversation we had last week.
[366]
To keep yourself at the forefront of someone's mind, follow up within a week or even two
[371]
weeks.
[372]
And then don鈥檛 let that be your last form of contact.
[376]
You want to keep following up after that.
[378]
And don鈥檛 just follow-up to find out how that person can help you; make your follow-up
[382]
a meaningful conversation.
[384]
Maybe the person mentioned a birthday they had or something they were doing with a family
[389]
member.
[390]
You can bring those types of things back into the conversation.
[393]
Think of this as establishing your network and building those relationships.
[397]
Now this does take a little bit of time, so you need to be patient and let it follow a
[402]
natural flow.
[403]
To really speed up your job search process and to get it right when it comes to your
[407]
resume, remember to take a look at the 6-Second Resume.

It鈥檚 an easy-to-use, downloadable resume that you can grab today and customize to apply
