Now let's get into it.
[43]
10 French Terms You Need to Know to Start Learning Ballet.
[46]
Number one - Allongé.
[48]
In classical ballet, allongé is an adjective
[50]
that describes a position that is stretched or made longer.
[53]
Allongé is usually used with arabesque,
[56]
such as extending your arm-
[57]
and leg further before closing into another position.
[61]
Think extended, outstretched, elongated.
[64]
Two - Port de bras.
[66]
This means movement of the arms.
[68]
It describes how dancers move their arms from one position to another.
[71]
For example, if you move your arms
[73]
from first position to fifth position,
[75]
that is considered a Port de bras.
[77]
Number three - Plié.
[79]
Plié is when a dancer is bending at the knees.
[81]
Correct use and development of a plié is a basic,
[84]
but essential movement to a dancer's technique.
[86]
Bonus terms: Demi Plié and Grand Plié.
[89]
Demi meaning small plié and grand plié meaning a big plié.
[93]
Number four - Relevé.
[95]
Relevé means raised.
[97]
Think- getting on your tippy toes and lifting your heels.
[100]
Number five - Tendu.
[102]
Tendu means tight or stretched.
[104]
A tendu is one of the fundamental movements in Ballet
[107]
when the working leg is extended along the floor
[109]
until only the tip of the toe remains touching the floor.
[113]
Number six - Dégagé.
[115]
Dégagé means disengage.
[117]
A dégagé is when you move your leg off the floor
[119]
from a position with a pointed foot
[121]
and straight leg to the front, side, or back.
[124]
It gets its name dégagé,
[126]
because this step is a movement, not a position,
[129]
where a leg disengages from the other.
[132]
Number seven - Rond de Jambe.
[134]
Rond de Jambe means "round the leg,"
[136]
or "circular movements of the leg."
[139]
Number eight - Développé.
[141]
Développé means to develop or a developing movement.
[144]
It is when you're working leg is drawn up the knee of the supporting leg
[147]
and extended to an open position.
[150]
Number nine - Pas de Bourrée.
[152]
Pas de Bourrée means beating steps.
[154]
It's a transitional step that has many different forms
[156]
depending on the direction you're moving in,
[158]
or if your legs are bent or straight–
[160]
like these Pas de Bourrées.
[162]
Number 10 - Pirouette.
[164]
Pirouette means spin.
[165]
It describes when you turn on one leg
[167]
with the other off the ground and in a position.
[170]
The most common position being in passé,
[173]
which is when your foot is pointed on your knee.
[175]
Now, I KNOW I only said we were going to learn 10 ballet terms,
[178]
but–
[179]
I wanted to give you a little bonus,
[180]
and the bonus term is Soutenu.
[183]
Soutenu means sustained.
[184]
It is when you're on Relevé, in fifth position, and turn.
[188]
Now, I DON'T expect you to have memorized
[190]
ALL those words in the last few minutes,
[192]
but now that you know how they're pronounced
[194]
and have a reference to what they look like,
[196]
you'll be able to recognize the terms
[199]
within my Intro to Ballet program.
[201]
And don't worry, I'll be demonstrating
[203]
and guiding you through EVERY step

of the Intro to Ballet program,
[206]
so you have nothing to worry about.

BRITTANY: And then her leg will extend out here.
[258]
Since she doesn't have a barre to hold on to,
[260]
she's really staying nice and tall on that supporting side.
[263]
She's like a tree, she's not letting her upper body...
