Understanding User Metrics in Google Analytics 4 (GA4) - YouTube
Channel: Loves Data
[0]
Hey there, Benjamin from Loves Data here! Welcome聽
back! In this video, I'm going to explain the聽聽
[5]
difference between four of the user metrics you聽
can find in Google Analytics 4 (GA4). We're going聽聽
[11]
to look at 'Total Users', 'Active Users', 'New聽
Users', and 'Returning Users'. Let's get started!聽聽
[21]
You've probably seen 'Users' (or 'Total Users')聽
in GA4. This metric tells you the total number聽聽
[27]
of people who've been to your website based聽
on the date range selected for your reports.聽聽
[32]
Now, I said people, because I like to keep things聽
simple, but really the total number of users聽聽
[38]
is the total number of reporting identities聽
that have been collected by Google Analytics.聽聽
[42]
A reporting identity can be a User ID聽
that you've sent to Google Analytics.聽聽
[48]
For example, if people can log in on your website聽
or app, then you can send your own identifier for聽聽
[53]
each individual to Google Analytics. Or聽
a reporting identity can be a Device ID.聽聽
[59]
If you've implemented GA4 on your website,聽
then this will be the Client ID from the Google聽聽
[64]
Analytics cookie. If you're measuring an app, this聽
will be the identifier from the app installed on聽聽
[69]
the user's device, so the app-instance ID. And if聽
you've enabled Google Signals, then this can be聽聽
[75]
used to identify an individual as they engage with聽
your website or app. (I'll talk more about Google聽聽
[81]
Signals in a moment.) You can control how GA4聽
handles reporting identifies for your property.聽聽
[87]
Let's head to Google Analytics to take a look...聽
To check how reporting identifiers are being used,聽聽
[93]
you can navigate to 'Admin'... And choose 'Default聽
Reporting Identity' in the property column...聽聽
[101]
We can see for this property that GA4 will make聽
use of User ID, then Google Signals, and then聽聽
[107]
the Device ID to identify users on the website. So聽
if you're sending your own identifier for users,聽聽
[114]
this will be used first. Then if this isn't聽
available, users will be identified by Google聽聽
[120]
Signals and finally, if that isn't available,聽
then the Device ID will be used. Okay, so what is聽聽
[127]
Google Signals? Google Signals is a feature that聽
can give you additional insights about your users.聽聽
[134]
Once enabled, your reports can include aggregated聽
and anonymous data for people who are logged into聽聽
[139]
their Google account as they browse your website.聽
So if someone is logged in and they're opted-in聽聽
[145]
to 'Ad Personalization', then you can see how they聽
engage with your website across multiple devices.聽聽
[151]
This means the feature can improve the accuracy of聽
your user metrics. Google Signals is also required聽聽
[157]
if you want to create remarketing campaigns in聽
Google Ads using audiences from Google Analytics.聽聽
[163]
And it's also required if you want to collect聽
demographic and interest data into your reports.聽聽
[168]
Let's head back to Google Analytics to see聽
where we enable Google Signals... We're still聽聽
[173]
in the admin area, so we need to select 'Data聽
Settings'... And then 'Data Collection'...聽聽
[180]
Since the switch at the top is off, it means聽
Google Signals isn't enabled. You'll need聽聽
[185]
to take a minute to read through the details.聽
When you enable Google Signals you are agreeing聽聽
[190]
to Google's Advertising Features Policy, so聽
you might need to adjust your privacy policy聽聽
[196]
and complete some other steps. So I聽
encourage you to read through the details.聽聽
[201]
When you're ready, you can click the聽
button to enable Google Signals...聽聽
[206]
This will now mean that you Google Signals can be聽
used to identify individuals as they access your聽聽
[211]
website. If you have a smaller-scale website,聽
then you might not see much of a difference in聽聽
[217]
your reports, since only a small percentage of聽
people will be logged into their Google account.聽聽
[223]
So if, like most people, you're not sending聽
your own User ID to Google Analytics. The聽聽
[228]
total number of users you see in your reports聽
will include the total number of Client IDs聽聽
[232]
from the Google Analytics cookie and聽
any available data from Google Signals聽聽
[237]
(if you've enabled the feature). Okay, so what's聽
the difference between a user and an active user聽聽
[243]
in GA4? Well, a user is considered active when聽
they've had a page on your website visible聽聽
[248]
on their device for at least one second. So if聽
someone navigates straight to your website and聽聽
[254]
spends at least one second viewing your content,聽
then they will be counted as an active user.聽聽
[259]
But if someone opens your website in a new tab聽
and it's hidden (so it's not in focus), then聽聽
[265]
they won't be considered an active user until they聽
select the tab. Let's take a look at an example...聽聽
[272]
We're looking at the Google search results. And聽
I'm going to open my website in a hidden tab聽聽
[277]
by right-clicking and selecting聽
'Open Link in New Tab'...聽聽
[284]
We can see the website has loaded, but it's聽
not in focus, it's hidden. So this means聽聽
[290]
a page view event has been set to GA4 and we聽
will be reported as a user, but at this stage,聽聽
[297]
we're not considered an active user.聽
Let's head to Google Analytics...聽聽
[309]
We're looking at the DebugView which lets us聽
send events to GA4 and drill down on each event聽聽
[315]
to view the parameters. I'm not going to go into聽
detail on how to use the DebugView in this video,聽聽
[321]
so let me know in the comments if you would聽
like me to cover it in a future video.聽聽
[326]
Anyway, looking at the DebugView, we can see聽
some events have come through, including a聽聽
[331]
page view event for the page I just loaded in the聽
hidden tab. Okay, now let's open the hidden tab...聽聽
[340]
My website is now in focus and聽
let's navigate to another page...聽聽
[347]
I've definitely spent at least a second on the聽
website, so let's head back to the DebugView...聽聽
[359]
We can now see the second page view, and聽
we can also see a user engagement event聽聽
[364]
has been triggered. Let's select this聽
event... We can see a parameter called聽聽
[369]
'engangement_time_msec' has also been sent聽
with the event. And this parameter includes聽聽
[375]
the number of milliseconds I spent on聽
the website before the event was sent.聽聽
[381]
So the number of active users is聽
based on the 'user_engagement' event聽聽
[386]
and the 'engagement_time_msec' parameter that is聽
automatically collected by GA4. And you're likely聽聽
[392]
to find these metrics are very similar, but you聽
might have slightly fewer active users compared to聽聽
[397]
total users since some people might open a hidden聽
tab and close it before ever seeing your website.聽聽
[404]
To see this, let's navigate to 'Explore'... And聽
create a new exploration report from scratch...聽聽
[413]
Let's enable two metrics for the report... Let's聽
enable 'Total Users'... And 'Active Users'...聽聽
[423]
And click 'Apply'... Now let's add聽
these two metrics under 'Values'...聽聽
[431]
And we can see that for Google's demo聽
property, there's a difference of 94 users聽聽
[436]
between the two metrics. This brings us to new聽
and returning users. A new user is anybody who聽聽
[444]
is visiting your website for the first time.聽
Google Analytics checks to see if a user has聽聽
[448]
an existing cookie and client ID, if they don't,聽
they're considered a new user in your reports.聽聽
[455]
There are a number of impacts on the number of聽
new users you will see in your reports. The main聽聽
[460]
things to consider are that people clearing聽
their cookies will be seen as new users when聽聽
[465]
they return to your website. Privacy-focused web聽
browsers only save cookies for short periods.聽聽
[471]
And people using multiple devices will also be聽
reported as two separate users (apart from those聽聽
[477]
measured by Google Signals). A returning user聽
is someone who has already been to your website.聽聽
[482]
This means Google Analytics has found an聽
existing cookie and client ID in their browser,聽聽
[488]
so your reports will include them in the number聽
of returning users. Since Google Analytics can聽聽
[493]
see they've been to your website before, you can聽
be confident that your number of returning users聽聽
[498]
is accurate. While the number of new users you聽
see in your report is impacted for the reasons聽聽
[503]
we've already covered. So that's the difference聽
between the 'Total Users', 'Active Users',聽聽
[508]
'New Users', and 'Returning Users' metrics in聽
GA4. Remember that people need to spend at least聽聽
[514]
one second on your website and your website聽
needs to be visible for them to be counted as聽聽
[519]
active users. Are there any terms in Google聽
Analytics you're struggling to understand?聽聽
[524]
