i've made suggestions about swap deals

loads of times a leading agent told the

athletic but the reality is that they

are too complicated and involve too many

variables

if you've got two players on 40 000

pounds per week with the year left on

their contracts you'd think this is

simple but it's not if one of them is 28

years old and the other one is 22. every

player has an individual asset value

straight swaps as was the case with that

alexis sanchez henrikh mkhitaryan deal

are unusual

not least because it's unlikely that two

clubs will deem that the players

involved are worth exactly the same

with sanchez and mkhitaryan is

ended up earning 391 000 pounds a week

at united and picked up a 6.7 million

pound signing on fee

while mkhitaryan's basic wage at arsenal

was 144 000 pounds per week and there

was an 8.5 million loyalty bonus on top

not including the agent fee

on the pitch sanchez was a disaster in

manchester and mkhitaryan's time in

london would prove very forgettable

in fact within 18 months of those

january moves both players were out on

loan elsewhere and that's probably

another reason why swap deals are not

particularly common

beyond the logistical difficulties and

the need for perfect alignment and

timing there just aren't that many

examples of them being a success
