[11]
the theory before the 2021 summer
[13]
transfer window had opened was that
[15]
player exchanges would provide a way for
[17]
hard up clubs to make signings without
[20]
spending heavily but in reality very few
[23]
swap deals with or without any
[24]
additional money actually took place
[27]
either during this window or any other
[29]
so why are swap deals so rare
[32]
i've made suggestions about swap deals
[34]
loads of times a leading agent told the
[36]
athletic but the reality is that they
[38]
are too complicated and involve too many
[41]
variables
[42]
if you've got two players on 40 000
[44]
pounds per week with the year left on
[46]
their contracts you'd think this is
[47]
simple but it's not if one of them is 28
[50]
years old and the other one is 22. every
[53]
player has an individual asset value
[55]
straight swaps as was the case with that
[57]
alexis sanchez henrikh mkhitaryan deal
[60]
are unusual
[61]
not least because it's unlikely that two
[63]
clubs will deem that the players
[64]
involved are worth exactly the same
[66]
amount the background to how arsenal and
[68]
manchester united found common ground
[70]
with sanchez and mkhitaryan is
[72]
fascinating and was explained by dick
[74]
law who was arsenal's chief negotiator
[76]
for over a decade
[78]
and the american stresses the importance
[80]
of trust in that same window he
[82]
remembers three players moved in a
[84]
connected transfer now he's talking
[86]
about a three-way deal that involved
[88]
olivier giroux michi bashuai and
[90]
pierre-emerick aubameyang
[92]
giroud was moving from arsenal to
[94]
chelsea batshuayi from chelsea to
[96]
borussia dortmund on loan and aubameyang
[98]
from dortmund to arsenal
[100]
each deal needed to go through or one of
[102]
the clubs would have ended up with two
[104]
of the three players and another with
[105]
none
[107]
there are certain clubs that i just
[108]
wouldn't trust at all but when i called
[110]
marina granovskaya i said for this thing
[112]
to happen i need your word that you're
[114]
going to sign giroud and marina said yes
[116]
we're going to sign giroux if we can
[118]
offload batshuayi
[120]
so i called sven mislintat to get an
[122]
absolute assurance that if they were
[123]
able to offload aubameyang they were
[125]
going to sign batshuayi
[127]
where mislintat confirmed law called
[128]
granovskaya back and outlined the way
[130]
forward
[131]
now that deal happened of course but it
[133]
was an unusual situation in which
[135]
everything went right more often even if
[138]
no money changes hands between clubs as
[140]
part of a swap deal the contrasting
[142]
values of players can cause all sorts of
[144]
complications
[145]
there are often sell-on clauses to
[147]
calculate levies which are payable to
[149]
the league on domestic deals solidarity
[152]
payments to be made on international
[153]
transfers and training compensation to
[155]
consider too
[157]
it's very difficult to find two players
[159]
of genuinely equal worth or a situation
[161]
which suits two clubs evenly or two
[164]
players even because it's not uncommon
[166]
for a player to feel as though they are
[167]
being persuaded or even pushed to join
[170]
another club slightly against their will
[173]
steven island for example had his doubts
[175]
about leaving manchester city for aston
[177]
villa as part of the deal that took
[178]
james milner in the other direction
[181]
ireland worried that he was making a
[182]
mistake even when he was signing the
[184]
paperwork
[185]
at one point he asked if he could step
[187]
outside and speak to his agent in
[188]
private now in the end ireland went
[190]
ahead with the move against his better
[192]
judgment
[193]
listening to players who have been
[195]
involved in swap deals you get the
[196]
impression that they are often the last
[198]
to find out that they're about to be on
[199]
the move and generally know little about
[202]
how the talks started
[203]
keith gillespie however heard straight
[205]
from the horse's mouth when in 1995 sir
[208]
alex ferguson pulled him aside after a
[210]
game against sheffield united to tell
[212]
him that a deal with newcastle for andy
[214]
cole could only be completed if he moved
[216]
to st james's park
[218]
gillespie was 19 years old and did not
[220]
have an agent at the time so ferguson
[222]
offered to negotiate his new castle deal
[224]
for him and more than quadrupled his
[226]
salary in the process
[228]
so now let's have a look at the deals
[230]
that don't happen
[232]
well first of all it all comes down to
[234]
valuation of players law says
[236]
then you get into the issue of whether
[237]
the players want to move sanchez was
[239]
willing to go to united and mkhitaryan
[241]
wanted to go to arsenal and that's why
[243]
it worked the third issue would have
[245]
been the player negotiations and agents
[247]
commissions
[248]
the fact that the players were not
[249]
dissimilar in age and profile helped
[252]
plus they would both be staying in the
[253]
premier league ultimately though the
[255]
deal was driven by united's
[257]
long-standing desire to acquire sanchez
[259]
and that played into the hands of
[260]
mkhitaryan's agent mina raola who knew
[263]
that his client could make or break the
[264]
transfer
[266]
as swap deals go this one was off the
[268]
scale financially according to contract
[270]
information obtained and published by
[272]
the german magazine desh beagle sanchez
[274]
ended up earning 391 000 pounds a week
[277]
at united and picked up a 6.7 million
[279]
pound signing on fee
[281]
while mkhitaryan's basic wage at arsenal
[283]
was 144 000 pounds per week and there
[286]
was an 8.5 million loyalty bonus on top
[289]
not including the agent fee
[291]
on the pitch sanchez was a disaster in
[293]
manchester and mkhitaryan's time in
[295]
london would prove very forgettable
[298]
in fact within 18 months of those
[299]
january moves both players were out on
[302]
loan elsewhere and that's probably
[304]
another reason why swap deals are not
[306]
particularly common
[307]
beyond the logistical difficulties and
[309]
the need for perfect alignment and
[311]
timing there just aren't that many
[313]
examples of them being a success
