[1]
compulsive hoarding is a growing hidden
[4]
problem he's hoarding in both his homes
[6]
in his cars in his garden it's estimated
[10]
to affect 6% of Americans
[12]
it just looks like everything that's
[15]
supposed to be in the kitchen cupboards
[16]
are all in the garden and up to 3
[19]
million people in the UK is in denial
[23]
and it's really really not good but when
[26]
things get this serious the experts need
[29]
to take action I've had to bow down to
[31]
that I need help
[33]
it upsets me that I can't do it
[46]
this suburban house looks ordinary
[49]
enough from the street but inside and in
[52]
the garden it's a very different story
[57]
[Music]
[59]
tea and casts from NGOs cleaning
[62]
services are in the process of clearing
[64]
it there currently seven days into the
[67]
job when we first came you couldn't see
[69]
it you couldn't see anything from here
[72]
she had made a little path without
[74]
Stumpy's through here by cutting my way
[77]
through so now from here literally was
[82]
pure greenery it was all bushes from
[85]
here so we've had to cut our way through
[92]
watch your step this is a lovely
[97]
conservatory which is not able to use
[99]
because it's absolutely full width is
[103]
bits and bobs
[105]
there's old curtains old suitcase old TV
[109]
empty paint buckets empty land shades
[113]
old newspapers old printer just things
[117]
that he actually doesn't need to use
[119]
there's a lot of broken crockery in here
[122]
carrier bugs that have disintegrated so
[124]
you can see how long they've been here
[127]
it's such a shame because he really
[129]
needs to use his property there's holes
[131]
in the kitchen floor it doesn't actually
[135]
have a kitchen here
[137]
there's not even a sink I don't know
[141]
what happened I don't know why it's like
[142]
this but he spends most of his time in
[146]
his car and it's really really not good
[153]
right now one of the lads is stepping on
[156]
a sink which we didn't know was there
[161]
this is the problem that we're facing
[163]
we don't know things are there until we
[165]
actually start to cut and uncover and
[169]
how ironic there's one in the garden but
[171]
there's not one in the house the more
[173]
the chart the more they find it just
[175]
looks like everything that's supposed to
[177]
be in the kitchen cupboard ie plates
[181]
casserole dishes saucers are all in the
[185]
garden this house and another two doors
[188]
down on the same street are owned by
[191]
Michael Saunders a 74 year old who shows
[196]
no signs of retiring now I work in a
[200]
luxury hotel I play the piano at night
[205]
for the guests I cook the breakfasts and
[210]
I'm the duty manager of a 69 bedroom
[213]
Hotel my days in the last few years have
[216]
been helping people who have been less
[221]
fortunate than myself what was family
[224]
and sit and associated friends I lead a
[227]
very very busy life during the cleanup
[232]
mr. Saunders has been happy chirpy
[236]
cheerful but he's in denial
[242]
severely we've given him a task to do
[244]
yeah
[245]
which yet actually hasn't completed
[248]
which is to clear some of the rubbish
[251]
from his car and also for us to gain
[255]
access to the garage the state of mr.
[258]
Saunders his properties
[260]
pretty bad he's had foxes living inside
[264]
his home they've been gaining access
[266]
through underground cellar hole he has
[277]
always shaved so I think he may be going
[281]
to his place of work
[284]
we've able to scrub off yeah I know he
[290]
goes to a calf up the road to have a
[291]
meal in terms of helping us with the
[295]
hoard he's not actually participating at
[297]
the menu I went into hospital with
[301]
cancer I was in hospital for six months
[304]
I had the loss of the loss of salary for
[308]
six months and then I was asked not to
[310]
lift anything for about 11 weeks after
[314]
coming into hospital imagine that and
[317]
trying to pay your bills but we got
[320]
through but obviously things got into a
[323]
dilapidated State t and cars are not
[328]
just cleaners they are trained in mental
[331]
health care and unlike many cleaning
[333]
firms they know that hoarding is a
[336]
mental health condition mr. Saunders
[338]
hoardings on a level 5 isn't it level 5
[341]
which she's really actually yeah really
[344]
extreme for the fact that he's hoarding
[346]
in both his homes in his cars and in his
[350]
garden and he's actually hoarding in the
[354]
car so it's really really bad he just
[357]
over spills into everything mr. Saunders
[360]
doesn't admit to having a problem he
[363]
doesn't think he's got a problem yeah
[365]
he's in complete denial yeah all his
[369]
possessions they're there for something
[371]
for some reason or they've got value but
[375]
really and truly not all of this stuff
[378]
have value even all of his stuff he
[380]
needs
[381]
how long have you have things in the car
[382]
well
[385]
would probably two years the kitchen
[389]
equipment right this is flooring for the
[392]
kitchen flooring tiles right tiles here
[396]
for around the around the washbasin
[400]
which is going to be in the utility it
[402]
was the only place I could store things
[404]
I imagine you can't go in no you can't
[408]
might at the moment I wouldn't have
[409]
anybody in anyway
[415]
mr. Saunders hasn't allowed the same
[418]
series property one of his houses you
[420]
can't actually get into it and the other
[423]
property when we asked he said he
[425]
couldn't find the key so sensitive and
[427]
you know we don't want to push him away
[430]
you know we're trying to gain his trust
[432]
when he's ready to have that help then
[435]
he'll let us know yeah with compulsive
[438]
hoarders you have to build the trust and
[442]
and take it a day at a time with them so
[444]
basically so we'll deal with these
[447]
gardens first then we'll deal with these
[449]
cars and then we'll gain access to his
[452]
home hopefully I haven't actually had a
[459]
look in this shed to see what's in here
[462]
could you see us when you first came no
[465]
you couldn't see it not over all the
[467]
shrubbery and the greenery you couldn't
[470]
see the floor you couldn't see anything
[473]
you couldn't see that bench it was
[475]
really really bad
[476]
right I think one of our labs has
[478]
actually found the door behind this
[480]
creepy Nighy thing is it a door yep
[487]
so I think it's a door with a glass
[489]
window the glass windows broken but I
[492]
think we've actually uncovered the door
[493]
to get through to the front so he's just
[496]
going to keep snipping away until he
[499]
uncovers it completely the beginning was
[504]
a very hard test to go and didn't know
[507]
what to expect with my team
[511]
smashed it don't see this much do ya I
[517]
looked upon buying my equipment for my
[520]
home as an investment and I was still
[523]
regarded as an investment but obviously
[526]
things got into a deal a dilapidated
[529]
state I became what you call probably
[533]
people might say a hoarder so I'm
[535]
grateful for this company that came
[537]
along who were going to come and help me
[541]
without them I know that I would have
[544]
been in some dire trouble eventually
[547]
I've always wanted to do things myself
[549]
I'm not a lazy so and so I've had to bow
[552]
down to that I need help
[554]
and sometimes that is hard to ask for
[558]
help when you've always given help I've
[560]
only just learning that it's not to be
[562]
ashamed to ask for help
[565]
although that upsets me it upsets me
[572]
[Music]
[575]
emotionally that I can't do it I do what
[581]
I can
[585]
[Music]
[589]
so thanks thanks very much for giving me
[592]
the opportunity I know it's honest
[599]
bounine or and we finish the job we
[603]
offer an aftercare service and so
[609]
basically we will still maintain contact
[613]
with mr. Saunders so we're not just
[614]
going to clean and leaving we'll be back
[617]
once a month to check up on him and so
[619]
forth but I've been talking to him all
[622]
week and I say people don't live like
[623]
this
[624]
hence or saying that he was in denial
[627]
yeah but now if I can retract what I
[630]
said I would after hearing him speak to
[633]
you
[634]
you know he's realized that all this
[636]
time he's a hoarder yeah so he's no
[640]
longer in denial because he's openly
[642]
admitted it now and that's what's really
[644]
shocked us but we were proud of him and
[646]
the part that he said that so we now we
[648]
know that we'll be able to move forward
[651]
yeah yeah so I'm looking forward to that
[654]
it's still a little bit of work left to
[656]
do
[657]
but I'm very very pleased how far we've
[661]
come was in seven days I mean it was
[663]
like an Amazon jungle in here so yeah
[667]
yeah we could be standing here seven
[668]
days about no a lot of all just have a
[671]
thing that we're just going to go in
[672]
there and throw away their prized
[673]
possessions when that's not the case not
[675]
a House Clearance no and the next step
[678]
would be to sort out the cars will you
[681]
drive and encouraging to let us go into
[688]
the house of the house and you start
[691]
from there
[691]
bit by bit
[694]
[Music]
[700]
you
[709]
you
