StashAway For Beginners — Is It Any Good? (Long-Term Review) - YouTube
Channel: Millennial Finance
[0]
your investments are like this plant
[3]
both of them need time to grow and just
[5]
like this review
[6]
we've taken nine months to grow on stash
[9]
away like growing this plant
[12]
i'm gonna put it over there so stash
[14]
away after nine months
[15]
after the hype is it worth it for
[17]
beginners i've personally put
[19]
more than 3 000 ringgit of my own money
[22]
into this app
[23]
so let's find out i've been using stash
[26]
away since march this year and when i
[28]
first joined stash away
[30]
i was a complete beginner to investing i
[32]
didn't know what all the investing lingo
[34]
meant
[34]
and i had no idea how robo advisors work
[37]
so this is my review as a complete
[39]
beginner
[40]
when i first started using stashaway
[41]
i'll be giving you my long-term review
[43]
of the app
[44]
and i'll go through my personal
[45]
portfolios how i use stash away
[47]
and a few things that i think they can
[49]
improve on if you're a beginner and
[51]
you're looking for a simple
[52]
and safe way to invest your money on
[54]
autopilot you want to know these
[55]
important things about robo advisors so
[58]
you don't waste your time
[59]
using an app that's not suitable for you
[61]
in a second i'll bring you into my app
[63]
so you can see things first hand but
[64]
before that
[65]
i want to talk about the beginner's
[67]
guide to investing and how i went from
[69]
investing
[69]
zero ringgit every month to now
[71]
investing 500 ringgit
[73]
minimum on a monthly basis since march
[76]
this year
[76]
and no i didn't have to get rich
[78]
overnight all i had to do
[80]
was create a habit around investing and
[82]
stick to it because the most important
[84]
thing
[85]
you need to know as a beginner investor
[87]
is that investing
[88]
is a habit and the habit of investing is
[91]
more important than the amount of money
[93]
invested especially for beginners just
[96]
like exercising or drinking water
[97]
first thing in the morning when you wake
[99]
up investing is a simple habit that
[101]
gives you more and more returns
[102]
every time you practice it and it's one
[104]
of the most profitable habits you can
[106]
create
[106]
because if you want to be wealthy you
[108]
have to invest
[110]
there is no wealthy person out there
[111]
today who has not invested their money
[113]
but you might be thinking
[115]
why should i invest now i'm young dumb
[117]
and broke
[118]
i don't have money to invest and those
[120]
are fair points
[121]
but you're missing the big picture the
[123]
long term game the point is not to make
[125]
10
[126]
000 ringgit in your first month
[127]
investing just so you can feel good
[129]
about yourself
[129]
the point is to develop the habit of
[131]
investing slowly and consistently
[133]
so that one day when you make more money
[135]
than you can spend you will already have
[137]
your investing habit
[138]
by your side like a trusty companion
[141]
that you've been nurturing
[142]
since day one and just like you put in
[144]
the effort to
[145]
develop this investing habit your
[147]
investing habit will pay you back by
[148]
making sure that you don't lose money to
[150]
inflation
[151]
and that you actually grow your money so
[153]
if you plan to be wealthy one day and if
[155]
you're not born with a silver spoon in
[157]
your mouth
[157]
then i highly recommend developing a
[159]
habit of investing
[160]
as soon as you can 5 ringgit a day is
[162]
better than 1 ringgit a day
[164]
and 1 ringgit a day is better than
[165]
nothing if you're a complete beginner
[167]
don't focus on the amount of money you
[169]
invest just focus on
[170]
setting money aside consistently to
[172]
invest if you do that
[173]
it's already a huge step forward and
[175]
you're way ahead of the crowd now that
[177]
we got my pep talk for beginner
[178]
investors out of the way
[180]
let's go into the app when you launch
[182]
the app the first thing you see besides
[183]
the amount of money you have
[185]
is the market commentary or news by
[187]
stashaway this is their way of educating
[189]
you about your investments
[190]
so that if you want to you can actually
[192]
find out more about what's going on with
[194]
your money this makes stashaway a great
[196]
app for beginners
[197]
because stash away is more focused on
[199]
creating useful content
[200]
that their users can benefit from
[202]
compared to other robo advisors
[204]
in their academy tab you'll find all
[206]
their videos articles and even courses
[208]
to help you understand your money better
[210]
so if you're a beginner and you have
[212]
doubts about how this robo advisor
[214]
invests your money then you can always
[215]
find out more about how it works
[217]
but let's say you're a beginner and like
[219]
me you don't really want to go through
[221]
all this content
[222]
you just want to invest your money and
[223]
forget about it even if i don't go
[225]
through their content
[226]
the fact that it's there for me when i
[227]
need it makes me trust them
[229]
a lot more of course the content alone
[231]
is not the most important thing
[233]
the most important thing is how much
[234]
money i get in return for putting money
[236]
inside
[237]
but every time i launch the app and i
[239]
see that they have up-to-date content
[241]
about things that are relevant to my
[242]
investments i have more confidence in
[244]
them and i trust them more to manage my
[246]
money
[246]
and that's a big factor for investing
[248]
apps the trust has to be there between
[251]
you and the app that you're using
[252]
especially if you're like me and you
[254]
don't want to spend too much of your
[255]
time
[256]
diving into the details of your
[257]
investments if i hired a financial
[259]
advisor
[260]
i'd have to trust them enough to handle
[262]
my money with minimal input from my side
[264]
so that i can focus on what i need to do
[266]
one of the downsides to a robo advisor
[268]
is that they're not 100
[270]
personalized to you compare this to a
[272]
traditional financial advisor
[274]
who you can go to for personal advice
[276]
but with their academy and market
[278]
commentary slasheray is trying to give
[280]
you more personal advice
[281]
with their wide range of content
[283]
available to their users
[284]
now let's jump into my portfolios you
[286]
can see the money i have in each
[288]
portfolio
[288]
and the risk index the risk index is
[291]
basically how much you can lose in a
[292]
portfolio for example
[294]
in my general investing portfolio i have
[296]
a one percent chance of losing 22
[298]
percent
[299]
of that portfolio in a given time in my
[301]
buy a vehicle portfolio
[303]
i have a one percent chance of losing
[305]
6.5
[306]
of that portfolio in a given amount of
[308]
time if you don't understand what i just
[310]
said
[310]
don't worry because i don't even
[312]
understand it well enough to explain it
[314]
to you
[314]
all you need to know is that the higher
[316]
the risk index the more aggressively
[318]
you're investing
[319]
and the more risk you're taking with
[320]
potentially more returns
[322]
generally the more time you have to
[324]
invest the more risk you should take
[326]
so we always recommend young people to
[327]
take as much risk as they can
[329]
because they have a lot more time to
[331]
invest 22 risk index is the highest for
[333]
me while 6.5
[335]
is the lowest so i have two portfolios
[337]
at both ends of the spectrums
[338]
very risky and not risky and i'll
[340]
explain why later so let's go into my
[342]
general investing portfolio and
[344]
you can see the overview i've deposited
[347]
1071 ringgit and right now in the
[349]
portfolio i have 1144 ringgit
[352]
so i've made 70 ringgit which i'm okay
[354]
with these are the assets my portfolio
[356]
is invested in
[357]
and this is where they're invested here
[359]
are the projections which basically tell
[360]
me if i continue investing at this rate
[362]
this is the amount of money i'll have
[364]
but i don't really pay attention to this
[365]
part what i do pay attention to is my
[367]
monthly
[368]
direct debits so this is how i automate
[371]
my investing process
[372]
with stashaway if we click on it we'll
[374]
go into the my deposit plans
[376]
which shows me all of my monthly debits
[378]
from my bank account into this app
[380]
so that i can invest automatically every
[382]
month i don't have to do it manually and
[383]
i don't even have to think about it it
[385]
just deducts money from my bank account
[386]
and puts it into my statuary portfolio
[388]
the second day of every month you can
[390]
also do it manually by clicking on the
[392]
manual deposit tab
[393]
i can add as many monthly recurring
[395]
deposits as i like and add it to any of
[397]
my portfolios
[398]
every second day of the month 150
[400]
ringgit comes out of my bank account and
[402]
goes to my general investing account and
[404]
333 ringgit comes out and goes into my
[406]
buy a vehicle account i can change the
[408]
deposit dates amount and frequency but
[410]
the frequency is only limited
[412]
to monthly and quarterly i wish i could
[414]
schedule automatic deposits weekly
[416]
so that i can invest small amounts
[418]
weekly instead of larger amounts monthly
[420]
but stash away doesn't have that feature
[422]
so that's my general investing tab
[424]
now let's go into my buy a vehicle
[426]
portfolio no i don't intend to buy a
[428]
vehicle this is just a goal-based
[429]
investing feature
[430]
and they didn't have the option that i
[432]
wanted which was to buy a new phone so
[435]
if stashaway could
[436]
add a feature where i could customize my
[437]
portfolio name that would be great but
[439]
anyways i used this by a vehicle
[441]
portfolio as sort of a piggy bank for me
[443]
to save up to buy a new phone
[445]
how i did it is i go to the gold-based
[447]
investing i choose
[448]
something i want so if what you want is
[450]
not here like for me
[452]
i just choose whatever let's say buy a
[453]
vehicle then stash away will help you
[455]
calculate how much money you need to
[457]
reach that goal
[457]
in my case i already know how much i
[459]
need which is about
[460]
3 000 ringgit for a new phone and let's
[462]
say i have one year to save up for it
[464]
the app will automatically tell you
[466]
how much you need to put in every month
[468]
for you to reach this goal
[469]
and it also tells you what your
[471]
recommended risk index will be
[472]
which in this case with this amount of
[475]
money and this amount of time
[476]
is usually the low risk so in my case i
[479]
had
[479]
nine months to save up for a 3000
[481]
ringgit phone and stashaway told me that
[483]
to achieve this goal i need to
[485]
invest between 328 to 332 ringgit every
[489]
month
[490]
so i invested 333 ringgit because the
[492]
app invests for you
[493]
you might deposit 3 000 ringgit but at
[496]
the end of the time period
[497]
you'll have 3100 ringgit so you made 100
[500]
ringgit there's also a possibility
[502]
of you losing 100 ringgit so if you
[504]
deposit 3000 ringgit
[505]
at the end of the time period you'll
[506]
only have 2 900 ringgit which is why i
[509]
don't really plan to
[510]
withdraw the amount of money i have in
[512]
my portfolio even though i've reached my
[514]
goal when i reach my savings goals
[516]
what i'll do is i'll take up 3000
[517]
ringgit from my personal bank account
[519]
and use it to buy the thing i want to
[521]
buy not withdraw the money from slash
[522]
away this is more of an advanced move
[524]
but the reason is because
[526]
one if my portfolio is not doing well at
[528]
the time i don't want to withdraw my
[530]
money and lose money and two
[531]
i want to keep my money invested for as
[533]
long as i can so that it keeps growing
[535]
even after i've made my purchase so if i
[537]
take up 3000 ringgit from my bank
[539]
account
[540]
and use that to buy a new phone my 3000
[542]
ringgit that has been saved in stash
[543]
away will still be invested this
[545]
trains me to plan for big purchases and
[547]
to save money consistently before i
[549]
spend it's a psychological game
[551]
but that's why it's so powerful i love
[553]
games and gamifying my savings and money
[555]
management
[556]
is a great way to practice investing and
[558]
build my discipline when it comes to
[559]
money management
[560]
there's also stash away simple which is
[562]
kind of like a fixed deposit it's the
[563]
lowest risk and safest investment you
[565]
can make on this app
[566]
but it also has the lowest amount of
[568]
returns i just put 100 ringgit in there
[569]
just to test it out
[570]
i don't use it that much but if you're
[572]
worried about losing your money and if
[573]
you just want to give stash away a try
[575]
stash away simple might be a great
[576]
option for you because you can see your
[578]
returns weekly
[579]
so that's my long term review on
[581]
stashaway as a beginner what i like
[582]
about them
[583]
is that they have a clean and easy to
[585]
use interface i like how they put out
[586]
content regularly on their academy to
[588]
educate their users their customer
[590]
support is professional and fast
[592]
if you have any questions or concerns
[593]
you can email call whatsapp or even
[595]
facebook message them
[596]
and they'll typically get back really
[598]
quick and the platform is also secure
[600]
i haven't noticed any security issues
[601]
since i've been using it and if you want
[603]
to change your settings there is always
[604]
fingerprint authentication
[606]
i feel safe and confident putting my
[607]
money in here and it gives me peace of
[609]
mind
[609]
what i think they can do better is to
[611]
add a few features like adding a weekly
[613]
deposit plan instead of just a monthly
[614]
or quarterly plan
[615]
this way users can get more exposure to
[618]
the markets over a salesman period of
[619]
time and i really wish that i could
[621]
personalize
[622]
my portfolio names it's not a huge thing
[624]
but it would be a nice
[625]
user experience update if you're new to
[627]
investing and if this video helped you
