How to Analyze Any Stock in 2 Minutes with David Jackson, Seeking Alpha Founder & CEO - YouTube

Channel: Seeking Alpha

[1]
about the system just to give you color
[3]
like for the call a lot of what we've
[5]
spent the last year and a half doing is
[8]
when you know we built seeking alpha um
[11]
it it had all of this information in it
[13]
right like all of the articles you know
[15]
you could read a ton
[17]
the the problem was that for many
[20]
investors they don't want to put all
[21]
that time in
[23]
or they they're willing to put the time
[25]
in but only when they've narrowed their
[27]
short list of the stocks that they're
[29]
interested in
[30]
and so one of the key questions that we
[32]
addressed was
[33]
how do we help you evaluate a stock like
[36]
in two minutes
[38]
and then give you the material to drill
[40]
down a lot
[42]
and that's what that's what premium
[44]
really does for you and so for example
[46]
what
[46]
you know just you'll see we'll talk
[48]
about this on the call but it's
[50]
these boxes here right the rating
[53]
summary and the factor grades and the
[54]
quant ranking
[56]
right that really give you the kind of
[59]
two-minute view of the stock
[61]
which is incredibly powerful the essay
[64]
authors and wall street ratings
[66]
um the average rating on stock by all
[69]
the sell-side analysts which is wall
[70]
street and all the software authors
[73]
and if you scroll down to underneath the
[75]
articles
[76]
you can see here in this box what the
[79]
distribution of opinion is about the
[81]
stock
[82]
you can see that there are 16 authors
[84]
who covered facebook on seeking out for
[85]
in the last 30 days
[87]
and you can see the breakdown and on
[88]
average you know it's a 3.71
[91]
five is the most bullish and and you
[93]
know zero is the most bearish
[94]
but one is first and wall street is is
[97]
more bullish on
[98]
you know on on on facebook they have to
[101]
have 48 analysts covering it because
[103]
tons of australians cover facebook and
[105]
then what we did was we put
[106]
summaries of for the people who are
[108]
bullish and bearish on the stock here's
[110]
what they say in one sentence about why
[112]
so without having to spend five hours
[114]
you can quickly get
[115]
here's the bull case on facebook and the
[118]
and the bare case on facebook
[119]
and i understand you know seeking alpha
[121]
versus wall street often seeking out has
[123]
a much better track record than wall
[125]
street
[125]
right because it's wisdom of the crowds
[127]
right
[129]
but then what we did was we asked
[131]
ourselves hey listen you know there's
[133]
a lot of data like financial data which
[137]
is you know what
[138]
how how's this stock's valuation how's
[141]
its growth rate
[142]
and so we have an enormous amount of
[144]
data on seeking alpha
[146]
but again the question we asked
[147]
ourselves was how can we give you a
[149]
really
[150]
accurate picture of the stock in like
[152]
two minutes
[153]
and so we there's a quant rating here
[156]
which is
[157]
overall what our quant system thinks of
[159]
the stock but it's
[160]
it's based also on these factor grades
[163]
where
[164]
we we compare all the data for this
[167]
stock
[168]
to all the other stocks in its sector
[171]
and so we compare all the valuation
[174]
metrics for the stock to all the other
[175]
stocks in its in its
[177]
sector and then and and it turns out
[179]
that facebook compared to the other
[180]
stocks in its sector gets a c
[182]
grade on valuation and a b plus on
[185]
growth and an a plus on profitability
[187]
and a d plus on momentum and at a b on
[190]
earnings revisions
[192]
and so kind of in one in like one minute
[196]
you've got a pic and we show you what it
[197]
was three months ago and six months ago
[199]
you've got a picture
[200]
of the stock but what's what's really
[202]
unique about this
[204]
is that you can drill down on all of
[208]
these things to see
[209]
all the underlying data so if you want
[210]
to do more research right
[212]
if you want to read the articles if you
[214]
want to understand why it gets so for
[216]
example let's let's do
[218]
growth right um i'm going to click on
[221]
both here are all of the underlying
[223]
metrics
[224]
which growth metrics for facebook it's
[227]
year-over-year growth rate
[229]
it's forward growth rate which is
[231]
analyst estimates of how much will grow
[232]
over the next year
[234]
it's ebitda growth in the last year you
[236]
know
[237]
it's it's free cash flow per share
[239]
growth eps growth all of these
[242]
and it shows you each of these metrics
[244]
for facebook
[245]
and shows you the the the sector median
[248]
of all the stocks in facebook sector
[250]
and then facebook's difference to those
[252]
and it puts a grade on it on every
[254]
single one of the underlying metrics
[256]
so the the beauty here is that i think
[259]
that i think there's a lot of websites
[261]
that
[262]
um that give you kind of grades or
[265]
or ratings for stocks but it's a black
[268]
box and you don't really understand
[270]
why yeah the beauty is what we're really
[273]
trying to do
[274]
is not tell you what the stock is we're
[277]
trying to summarize the data for you
[280]
so and then if you want to open it up
[282]
and drill down so for example if
[283]
you know if we look at value right so
[286]
you know here it's got
[287]
non gap pe ratio the training 12 months
[290]
the forward you know the meaning that
[291]
the the
[292]
the um the p ratios that analysts use
[295]
where they adjust for
[296]
right one time and things like that and
[298]
then there's gap trading 12 months and
[299]
forward
[300]
and enterprise value to sales both
[303]
forward and trailing
[304]
enterprise value to ebitda all of the
[307]
price to sales
[308]
all of these the beauty of all of this
[310]
is that you don't have to believe our
[312]
ratings
[313]
you can just look at all the underlying
[314]
data if you want to
[316]
so let's say for example you say i'm a
[318]
growth investor
[320]
and i'm i'm i'm only interested in
[322]
stocks with
[323]
with really good growth you can look at
[326]
this immediately and say okay i'm not
[328]
interested in that stock i don't need to
[329]
spend half an hour researching it
[331]
because
[331]
it just doesn't have good enough growth
[333]
and i and i trust the the ratings here
[336]
and then when you find the stocks that
[337]
you're interested in you can go into a
[340]
lot of depth and you can you can look at
[341]
it you can look at all of the underlying
[343]
data
[344]
and in that respect it's immensely
[346]
powerful
[347]
because and i think this is this is very
[350]
relevant
[351]
to your followers right in your discord
[354]
as well which is there are many people
[356]
who don't have experience with financial
[358]
analysis and they don't understand what
[360]
all these metrics are
[361]
and and for them what we give them is a
[364]
really robust system that in two minutes
[367]
we give them this scorecard
[369]
where they can see okay seeking alpha
[371]
authors are bullish on this stock
[373]
wall street's bullish on this stock you
[375]
know
[376]
it's doing well in growth and
[377]
profitability and earnings revisions and
[379]
it's
[380]
okay in valuation you know the momentum
[382]
isn't great right now i'm happy to buy
[384]
it
[384]
and they can make their decisions based
[386]
on that but for the people who want to
[388]
drill down a lot more or as an investor
[391]
gets more sophisticated
[392]
and learns more let's say they go
[394]
through your university
[395]
right you know then all the data is here
[399]
on seeking alpha
[400]
and it's just remarkably the like the
[403]
amount here
[404]
is is astonishing but what we've tried
[407]
to do
[408]
is also make it really simple and
[410]
instantaneous
[411]
for people who just say please give it
[412]
to me on a plate i don't want to spend
[414]
an hour on this
[415]
right the reason i love this is because
[417]
this was built by a quan guy
[420]
who who i met early on in my career and
[422]
then circled back with him and we
[423]
acquired his company
[425]
but this is this is quantitative data
[428]
for fundamental investors
[430]
right this is the way i think as a
[433]
fundamental investor which is
[434]
how cheap is the stock or how expensive
[437]
is it relative to other stocks
[438]
how fast is this company growing
[440]
relative to others
[442]
how profitable is this company does the
[444]
stock have momentum or not
[446]
and our analysts the one that needs most
[449]
vaccination is earnings revisions but it
[451]
turns out to be one of the most
[452]
important
[453]
which is are analysts revising up
[456]
or down their estimates for how much the
[458]
company is going to earn
[460]
generally when analysts start revising
[462]
down estimates
[464]
that means that the stock is getting a
[465]
bit there's momentum to that so it means
[467]
the stock's going to become more
[468]
expensive
[469]
because for example for the price it's
[471]
at now if it's going to earn less
[473]
analysts are revising down their numbers
[475]
it's going to get more expensive
[477]
it means its growth rate's going to go
[478]
down it obviously
[480]
often what happens is downward earnings
[482]
revisions impact the price of a stock
[484]
immediately
[485]
so it impacts its momentum right and so
[487]
the beauty of this
[488]
is it's like if you take people through
[490]
these it's
[491]
this is actually kind of investing 101
[494]
this is how to think about
[496]
which is you know how fast is this
[497]
company growing
[499]
and the beauty of this is that once you
[500]
just understand the concepts
[503]
that this this kind of scorecard
[506]
just does it for you instantaneously
[508]
exactly
[510]
we have to do tens of millions of
[511]
calculations every morning these are
[513]
updated every morning
[515]
and there's tens of millions of
[516]
calculations because you're comparing
[518]
all these metrics
[519]
to the same metrics for every other
[521]
stock in the sector
[522]
and then grading every stock relative to
[525]
all the others
[526]
so it's impossible to calculate this on
[527]
your own i mean i mean you could
[529]
it will take you a day to get one of
[531]
these grades right if you
[534]
so this is kind of the power of massive
[537]
computing
[538]
with huge amounts of data but what i
[541]
love about it is the system is very
[542]
transparent
[543]
i'll give you one other example of just
[546]
the kind of
[546]
there's all sorts of surprises in the
[548]
system let's say you're saying
[550]
i really want to just check all the news
[552]
on this company i'm very interested in
[554]
this stock
[555]
what's the news bin well you know if you
[557]
look at this page you have to click on
[558]
each of these headlines and you're
[560]
clicking back with
[560]
forwards if you click on the news tab
[563]
and you're a premium subscriber
[564]
look at this it just gives you a
[567]
summarizes
[569]
right of of each news story and you can
[572]
hide the summaries
[573]
just see the headlines or open the
[574]
summaries you can
[576]
filter the news by type so you can say
[579]
you know okay i just want to see
[580]
their earnings how were their earnings
[581]
and here's just their earnings news
[583]
right you know so i can i can see each
[586]
earnings and read the read the reports
[588]
of that or for example
[590]
are they acquiring any companies this is
[592]
eminent news so if i want to see which
[594]
companies facebook has acquired
[596]
this is m day news just about facebook
[599]
and so
[600]
me and this is i mean this what i looked
[604]
at
[605]
when we built this was you know i i'm
[608]
i came from the world of professional
[611]
investing where people use
[614]
you know bloomberg and factset iq
[617]
and these platforms cost thousands and
[620]
thousands of dollars per year
[622]
and my goal was let's democratize this
[625]
yeah let's make available for everyone
[628]
right
[628]
and the result that the results of this
[630]
are incredible and so the the line that
[633]
what we're trying to achieve here is how
[635]
can we on the one hand make this really
[637]
accessible to new investors
[639]
and for people who who don't want to
[640]
spend a lot of time either because
[642]
generally they don't want to spend a lot
[643]
of time or they're just not ready to yet
[645]
on this slide
[645]
before they narrow down their list right
[648]
and on the other hand so how do we make
[650]
it really easy
[651]
and give you a view of the stock
[653]
literally in two minutes that you can
[654]
trust
[656]
but then also if you want to drill down
[659]
we can give you all of the information
[661]
we can give you articles and news and
[663]
all the underlying data
[665]
so that you never have to trust us or
[667]
trust our ratings
[668]
you can if you want to evaluate it all
[670]
for yourself it's all there
[672]
and we've made it super easy to drill
[676]
[Applause]
[679]
[Music]
[682]
[Applause]
[686]
down
[687]
[Music]
[694]
you
