Justice and Busy P - What's in My Bag? - YouTube

Channel: Amoeba

[0]
Hello, I am Busy P from Ed Banger Records from Paris.
[4]
Hi we are Justice. I am Gaspard.
[6]
Xavier.
[7]
And we are here in Los Angeles at Amoeba for What's in My Bag.
[27]
I bought an ESG record.
[29]
ESG is one of those bands where everytime I see their record I buy it.
[39]
I have a soft spot for bands that are so minimal
[43]
because there's nothing, ESG is basically bass and drums, percussion and vocals but
[49]
somehow they manage to never make it boring and to make it sound like there's a lot of people and a lot of things going on
[54]
And they have such a specific groove
[58]
that it's impossible to mimic if you're not part of the family, y'know
[62]
it's offbeat but still very...
[65]
Very together, but at the same time a bit floaty. It's amazing.
[69]
This is a record from Piero Umiliani.
[72]
70's experimental and psychedelic composer from Italy
[77]
It says 'Eye Problems?'
[79]
I really don't know what to expect
[82]
but it's very moody and a little drum machines and stuff like this.
[93]
Everybody, you know, has recommended this album
[96]
but I'm not familiar that much with Bad Brains.
[106]
It's a recommendation from Amoeba, but also from one third of the Beastie Boys
[109]
which is my favorite band ever, and it's from Adam Yauch
[112]
who has said it's the best punk hardcore album of all time.
[116]
I bought Thundercat's new album.
[130]
There's one song that I heard in London in a caf茅, maybe four months ago.
[135]
I hope it's on this album
[136]
I wouldn't be gutted if it wasn't on this one, but I loved it
[139]
and when I asked what it was someone told me it was Thundercat
[142]
so I reckon it's on the new record.
[144]
I'm crossing fingers.
[146]
And the sleeve and the box is so beautiful
[149]
it's impossible not to want to own it.
[152]
Like if you don't know, it could be a Miles Davis record cover. It's so classic.
[158]
I got this 'Musique Idiote'
[160]
and it's this guy called Roger Roger
[162]
doing some musique idiote, like silly music.
[172]
It's a famous record for library music nerds
[176]
I don't know that much about it, but I got it.
[181]
Can we talk about the fact that the guy looks exactly like Gaspard in the photo
[185]
minus the glasses
[192]
The Fraggle Rock.
[204]
What? 24 songs by the Fraggle Rocks
[209]
Voila.
[212]
I bought '20/20' by the Beach Boys, one of my favorite bands ever.
[216]
there's one of my favorite Beach Boys songs on this one
[219]
that is 'Be With Me'
[231]
It's a very dark Beach Boys track I'm really happy to have it.
[235]
And it's new and I actually like reissues.
[238]
We have so many records at home
[240]
and so, so many of them are first pressings
[243]
and you can almost not listen to them because there's too much noise and too much tracks and everything
[249]
I'm always happy to see some reissues.
[251]
I found this book on the images of Pink Floyd
[255]
and it's been made by Storm Thorgerson, the head of Hipgnosis studio.
[260]
they just did the best record covers ever
[263]
everybody knows this record cover, but to us, it was a huge inspiration
[268]
on having just one image without the name of the band
[271]
without any typography, just something very pure
[275]
And at the time, we'd already been using the cross for three years
[279]
but we didn't necessarily want to use it more
[282]
and we were looking at this cover, and we were like, yeah, how great it would be to have just
[286]
some symbol on the record
[288]
and only weeks later, we thought, of course, we have the cross and we should use it.
[293]
I know that they're going to be jealous of something I found
[296]
and I think it's the side of the memorabilia
[299]
I love this word, memorabilia.
[301]
An amazing country funk handkerchief.
[307]
Amazing. $4.99 but I took it.
[310]
I bought another record just for the cover
[313]
Can is a bit the same thing for me as Pink Floyd
[316]
it took me years to kind of understand, and there's still a lot of stuff that is too much for me
[320]
and this is their debut album, and it looks beautiful, but I have no idea what's on this.
[334]
One of the sides is just one song
[336]
so it might be a bit challenging to listen to
[339]
but at least, even if the record is challenging
[342]
the record sleeve is inviting
[344]
so it's a good balance.
[346]
I found those ones and they are made by this guy called Duke Johnson
[350]
and he did record covers for Judas Priest
[353]
it's this really colorful kind of airbrushing painting stuff.
[359]
Yeah, I just love these guys, so I bought all I could find
[362]
and I found this Big River that he did
[366]
I just love those kind of geometric shapes
[370]
For those who don't know, both Gaspard and Xavier, before making music were graphic designers.
[375]
Both graphic designers and they both don't like music, so they buy images.
[379]
My last choice will be, of course
[382]
I'm a kid from the 90s, y'know, you can see how I'm dressed
[386]
Ok, this I'm actually jealous of.
[393]
And look at this
[396]
and also the casting. 'Beavis and Butt-head Do America.'
[400]
White Zombie, Red Hot Chili Peppers
[402]
LL Cool J, Rancid, AC/DC, Isaac Hayes
[406]
You can't go wrong when you hang out with Beavis and Butt-head.
[417]
You're a bit my Beavis and Butt-head.
[422]
Well, that's going to be my last choice.
[424]
I have an Elton John mug.
[426]
I already have my Amoeba mug at my place
[429]
so I take my morning tea in an Amoeba mug
[432]
amongst others, because I just like
[434]
Just like mugs.
[435]
Yeah, I just like mugs, I have a lot of mugs, from different periods.
[439]
And a Blondie mug.
[440]
Whoa, ok, it is great, this one.
[443]
I really don't know what to expect from this
[446]
It's the music from a video game I actually never played with.
[463]
Sometimes there's some really interesting stuff in all video game music
[468]
because you really have to go to the point in terms of melodies and emotions
[473]
you can provide with a very minimal...
[476]
I am wondering what type of emotions will come out of this.
[480]
Yeah, the good ones.
[481]
Thank you very much, guys.
[483]
Thank you.
[484]
Thank you for inviting us.
[486]
Yeah it's so much fun just to hang in the shop.
[488]
We would do it anyway, so...
[490]
You're welcome back anytime.
[491]
You need a clap for the end?
[493]
Yeah we need a clap for the end.
